Many years later was back to try the Thai spice chicken wrap. Just thought that the wrap would be better with hot chicken breast, not deli chicken. Produce was good, but didn't go well in that wrap.

Probably one of the best sandwich places I've been to in a long time. Absolutely delicious, deadass. This sandwich shop was very clean, bright, with the staff being so welcoming. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere being so friendly, and the food came out so quickly. So fresh, so full of flavor, and it only left me wanting more, which is a great thing because it'll keep me coming back. if you are feeling like you want a deliciously-cold sandwich, on a hot Summer day, this is the place to go.

Had a business meeting here and it was perfect. Quiet, plenty of room and the sandwich was good and basic. Next time will branch out and order something bigger and interesting.

Perfect spot for a quality hearty breakfast and a decent latte! The guy behind the counter was great too. He says he didn't squeeze the OJ, but someone certainly did because it was delicious!

We stopped in for a quick lunch and ordered a few things. We got a club sandwich, Oreo bar, pesto pasta salad and potato salad. The sandwich was toasted and had plenty of fixings. It was simple but delicious. The pesto pasta salad was super tasty but the potato salad, while good tasted like it was from the grocery store. The Oreo cream bar was dreamy and delicious. This is a quick no frills spot with indoor and outdoor seating. Service was friendly and food was good!

I still stop by Bertha's when I'm in the area but it's under new ownership now so my beloved turkey sandwich isn't as good as it used to be. The turkey that they used to roast in-house with rosemary now tastes more like ordinary turkey lunch meat. The bacon now tends to have a lot of fat on it and they're not as liberal with the pesto mayo. On a final sad note, the complimentary chocolate cookie isn't the same: it's now dry and chalky. I'll keep my review at four stars for now, as the sandwich is still better than many, but they're going the wrong direction.

We're all too familiar with the Over Easy's and Hash Kitchens of the world, and while great, we expect them to be. Their ubiquitous nature, while not entirely fair to them, makes one take them for granted. That being said, maybe the scorn isn't entirely unearned, as the bigger a chain is, the less of a personal touch they potentially have. To that end, I'm more than a little fortunate to have found perhaps Phoenix's best kept breakfast secret, Bertha's Cafe! Bertha's has been here right under many of our unsuspecting noses for the better part of 20 years, surviving all the shenanigans of the aught years and more recently Covid. Bertha herself built up quite the reputation for the restaurant focusing on a customer forward and quality ingredient laden home cooking approach coupled with reasonable prices, and impeachable cooking expertise. My brother Steve and I, stumbled upon it doing a Google search upon finding out that they shuddered the doors of the Over Easy on Camelback and 24th St. of alternate breakfast spots. After agreeing to try it, and not expecting much, we were immediately and warmly greeted by Mary, whose family now owns the place after purchasing it from Bertha after she tapped out to enjoy other endeavors. Many folks would start casting side eyes after a sea change of management, but I'm happy to say the reputation that was built carries over into the new ownership through a redoubling down on all the core values that Bertha painstakingly implemented. Mary suggested the Chorizo burrito. Being no stranger to this at other places, I was pleasantly surprised by how refreshingly different in the best possible way, this one was, exuding such delicious flavor with it's perfect marriage of Chorizo, cheese and potatoes. Paired with a zesty but not overly spicy Salsa, you'll wonder where it went, you'll eat it so fast. With a large breakfast and lunch menu and a veritable goldmine of heavenly pastries, brownie and other dream bars, this diamond in the crowded breakfast rough is just begging to have it's untold treasures discovered by Phoenicians and weary tourists alike. So that hard earned cash you were going to give to the major breakfast chains? You would do very well to hand it to this hard working and well deserving family instead, whose sole purpose is to reacquaint you with homemade food prepared with that which is missing from the faceless giants. Care, comfort and quality customer service. All the staff is amazing, from the rarely seen, but hardest working cooks led by Joanna and James, to the front of house with our lovely hostess Mary and the dashing Douglas, who both welcome guests with the warmest of wishes and the biggest of smiles. Try Bertha's today. Arlen approved. 10/10

TOP FAVE breakfast / lunch spot! Berthas Cafe is the best kept secret in Phoenix. If you know about it, ya know! If not, you need to hop on it!! Our favorites to order are the breakfast sandwich and the Turkey sandwich. So simple yet so delicious! If it's your first time you HAVE to try the turkey sandwich. The caramelized onions make it an easy 10/10 for me. Their lunch special is also a great deal! In addition to all their great breakfast / lunch options, they also have several baked goodies to choose from. Service is top notch every time. The manager is such a delight & everyone is always so welcoming. The space is actually great for groups large & small. Doesn't get too packed which is nice for days you want a nice place to dine in without having to wait long periods of time. Addthis to your list of places to try if you haven't already!! You won't regret it!

Beginners Luck is just that kind of place. Food 4.5/5 - I ordered the Crab and Shrimp Roll with fries. It was excellent and quite a portion. More than enough for a second meal. Loaded with shrimp and crab. I wasn't expecting a crab and shrimp salad but rather a mix of the two warm and buttered in the roll but it was very tasty as served. The only part that was a little off was the burned in brand on the roll the cold salad was served in. The charred flavor with the salad was a little off putting. I just pinched off the burnt bits from the bread. Excellent fries! Service 4/5 - I sat at the bar. Bartender was nice, offered regular menu and restaurant week menu as well. Meal was brought by manager, fries were still piping hot. Bartender and manager checked back to make sure meal was to my liking. Ambiance 5/5 - Cute place. A lot of nice outdoor seating and seating inside but a bit less. All in all a great place with a nice complement of offerings! I will return. If only they had a fly through with rotisserie chicken to go, I would never think of Bandera again.

We were seated inside quickly - it was a slow afternoon. Signs on the door let you know they have A/C however they left the front door propped open so it wasn't that cool inside. We each had a cocktail and they were pretty good - him a Painkiller on Main (he said it was good) and I had Ranch Water Paloma but asked them to mix tequila and mezcal rather than have me choose one over the other. Quite tasty! We just did apps: Fondue Blanc served with linguisa, pretzel bread and roasted cauliflower. The fondue was especially delicious with the cauliflower. We also had pimento cheese served with potato chips and chicharrones. I've only ever tasted grocery store made pimento cheese and was not a fan but when I tasted the pimento cheese at Beginner's Luck, I instantly became enamored. Totally enjoyed it with the chips. I recommend stopping in for a bite when wandering Old Town.

I ordered a protein shake and it was too watery so I asked if they can make it thicker. As they were remaking my shake my friend was standing in line to order because she didn't know what to get yet so I gave her my watery shake I didn't want since we already drank out of it and the lady at the front ( seemed to be the manager) said to my friend I'm going to have to take the shake from you. They threw the shake in the trash anyways so i don't know why my friend couldn't keep it. So since they were so rude we went somewhere else to eat and got great service. Terrible service at this location which sucks because i use to walk here all the time for their shakes :( Update: to clarify your confusion it wasn't about the shake being horrible it was about the rude interaction from employee or manager that said we're gonna need to take that shake away and since we already drank out if it, it was being thrown in trash. So that's just a waste and rude on her part that she could have let us keep it. As a customer service worker that was bad customer service. I really love the aesthetic of this place. First of all it's tucked on the back corner of a strip mall. You wouldn't know it was care without looking, even though there is a small patio that wraps around. The dining room is kind of a great mixture that stuff it's very industrial working with lots of concrete with open duct work, but it also has a lovely tufted Bank at and crystal chandeliers. The perfect balance and I love it. You can see into the kitchen which I also like. Our server was delightful, and I loved the attentiveness, like making sure to move the curtains when the light was hitting in an odd way. I started with a delicious drink that I think was called Mezcal Orange Fizz. It was yummy! For the first course I chose the Salmon Crudo. It had a citrus dressing and crispy rice chip. It was absolutely delicious, but very tiny. I could have licked the plate because the dressing was so yummy. My friend had the gazpacho, which she said was very good With main course I chose the Garlic-Lemon Scallops and Corn. It was four delicious scallops on polenta garnished with popcorn. What a cool surprise! It was really good! My friend had the short ribs which she seemed to like as well. For dessert, we both chose the key lime tart. It was a little bit of heaven on a plate! I really enjoyed it. The portion sizes were appropriate - - what we probably should be eating rather than the huge portions we normally get. I was able to finish everything, and I left full but not stuffed. I did remove a star because I did not like that they charged a gratuity on a check for just one person. I normally tip a minimum of 25%, but they added 18%. I just left it. I understand the need to include the gratuity with a larger party (somehow the server always seems to get the short end on those larger parties). I don't know if that's a normal thing, or a restaurant week thing because, to be honest, hubby always pays the bill. I do recommend this hidden gem of a place. It has a lot going for it and I've always enjoyed my visits here.
