He didn't have any time for me, even though there was not a soul in sight, so it's not like my questions were keeping him from handling a mega line of people bowling over one another to get in. Au contraire. It was a sad scene, made worse by the fact that somehow a friend and I were let in only to be met with a bare venue with a handful of dancing wildabeasts that had no care in the world if we "crashed" their party. It was an embarrassment for mankind, really. There was nothing memorable about the place, in a good way, at least. I have never been shot nor hardly ever told to leave. I have wandered into Courtyards, sacred sites in Old Jerusalem and all kinds of buildings that I'm not supposed to go into. Tonight I was invited to my old twin friends birthday party at the Lemon Grove at the Astor Hotel rooftop and I was a tad early. As I crossed the street there was a metal stanchion blocking most of the entrance to the Avalon Club with one door open. I wandered in and people were milling about setting up for an Emo night with the band called Waiting For April. I had seen this club change over the years but I had no idea it was still operating and it's a beauty with tremendous history and cavernous rooms with bars and side rooms. I wandered around and upstairs I found a merch table and a drum kit with guitars and some guys warming up. I started talking to them and it turns out that is the headlining band. We talked music and the struggles of a young band, I gave them some insight from my experience, they gave me their CD which is quite nice and I proceeded to check out the historic place. I wandered through every part of the club while the band was doing sound check including the Bardot room and unlike many clubs, you really feel the history here in the design and architecture of this historic venue. Here is the fascinating history: The Avalon Hollywood (also known simply as Avalon) at 1735 N. Vine Street in Hollywood, California, near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street (across from the Capitol Records Building) was built in the Spanish Baroque (Churrigueresque) style by architects Henry L. Gogerty and Carl Jules Weyl, with decoration by Steffan Horbaczek, it has operated continuously as a live performance space since opening--never as a movie theater. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 as part of the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment Historic District. It started as the Hollywood Playhouse (1927-1930s). In 1942, the theater was purchased (reportedly for around $105,000) and renamed the El Capitan Theatre (distinct from the more famous one on Hollywood Boulevard). NBC acquired or leased the building in the early 1950s and converted it into a television studio. In 1963, ABC invested heavily (around $400,000) in renovations--including extending the stage, adding camera equipment, control booths, and other TV infrastructure--and briefly renamed it the Jerry Lewis Theatre for Jerry Lewis's short-lived (13-week) ABC variety series. From 1964-1970: it was The Hollywood Palace. From 1970s-1990s: The Palace Music Venue. ABC sold the theater in 1978 to businessman Dennis Lidtke, who restored it and reopened it in 1982 (or around 1987 per some accounts) as The Palace (sometimes called the Hollywood Palace). It hosted rock concerts, HBO specials (e.g., Sheena Easton, Bruce Willis), the Ramones' final show (1996), the American Music Awards, and film appearances. It operated as a live music venue through the 1980s and 1990s. 2002-Present: Avalon Hollywood Nightclub with a major renovation that transformed it into a modern nightclub, concert hall, and event space with standing-room/dance floor capacity (around 1,250-1,500), state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and visuals. It emphasizes electronic dance music (EDM), DJ sets, and live performances, with upstairs space later becoming Bardot, an intimate lounge/restaurant/club opened around 2008. Notable modern acts have included Tiësto, Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, Eric Prydz, Armin van Buuren, Kaskade, and many others in the EDM scene. It has also hosted award shows, benefits, screenings, political fundraisers, and private events. In recent years (2024-2025), Insomniac Events (founded by Pasquale Rotella) partnered with and then acquired the joint marking the first ownership change in about 50 years and ensuring its continued role in dance music culture. The Avalon has adapted remarkably over nearly a century--from legitimate theater and WPA productions to burlesque, TV studio, variety show epicenter, rock club, and EDM nightclub--while retaining its core as a live entertainment landmark in the heart of Hollywood. The first floor is the large concert venue while the second floor (Bardot) is the smaller more intimate space. We bought tickets online ahead of time which were affordable, but when we arrived we overheard security charging more than double the cost in cash to get in. The venue was mostly standing room surrounded by tables for bottle service. When we were there the shots cost $13 but your mileage may vary depending on the night and the artists performing. Compared to other nightclubs this one is smaller so it's more intimate and you can be closer to the DJ or artist for a better experience.

One time I got so excited I banged the table and the glass dropped. It happens when one is seeking a reverse card to save their life! The place is suppose to be a play on a hotel I guess, but to me it also kind of looked like a haunted house. A bit. Do not imagine cobwebs, ghosts, and Jason props. It was more haunted in color and shape. Like a haunted house that was formerly excorcised of the devil and all his minions and no was in its fixer-upper phase. I guess one might have to look at the pictures to understand where my thoughts went. When I entered the energy was building. But it was such a slow simmer that I felt like Uno would not pop with revelvery. I went exploring after first entering garden, into their main foyare. I saw an upstairs. I was not allowed to go up. Apparently, there was a VIP section. Oh what is up there, I asked one of the staff members and he did not respond. I asked a patron that was walking down the stiars? What is up there? She seemed like she did not want to answer. I said an elephant? She said, heat, it's hot up there. So now I am left to wonder what was up those stairs at No Vancy and kind of irked that I am left to wonder what the flight of stairs held at its end. I was backed in the garden, thinking of what would happen next? I saw a brave soul ask if he could join two to play a game. I did the same and soon I was in a card game with two other people. What was great, is that they had the house rules posted, which were apparently the official Mattel rules. And like for example, I always played Uno in the following way: if you did not have a certain color you ate from the pile till you got a color or another card you can play like the Wild card? But here you only ate one, and if it could be played you could, and if you could not then it was the next player turn. I realized that I kind of wrote an instuction manual. I kind of wanted to delete it, but then I remember when a plate is salted it cannot be unsalted. I played a player who was into the game. I know that people are like why are you so into the game? But when two people are into an ordinary Uno game it stops being ordinary. It does not become a clash of fabled warriors inside an arena with lions and leopards. But it does become competititve in a fun way, where no one tells another to chill just because they want verification of a play that might turn the game on its head. What I thought the Uno Social people did very well was engage us all. They sat down a guy next to us. He became the fourth of our Uno game. Inspired by the staff member I asked someone else to sit and we became 5. We played a few games and had a good time. One of the staff members gave a winner of a round a Love Island expansion pack. Who knew? Saul and I then peeled of that group and went to get some drinks. The drinks at this place were smooth and strong. I got an Uno themed one. I could finish it in one gulp if I wanted too, but I did not, I was not in a race. By this time the place was, in my opinion, too packed by Uno players. It was the kind of packed that if you wanted to stand up you were afraid too because then you would lose your spot and then you would be amidst the crowd trying to find another spot that anchors you to place. The crowded bar made one feel like they were a sardine in a party. And no one likes to be a sardine anywhere. Having no elbow room is a type of torture, not water for sure, but still anxiety inducing. Another Yelper described this place as a human zoo, perhaps I should have left it there too? This place is close, like steps from Hollywood Blvd. So I can see how it can be part of a bigger night. Stop by and if one does not feel the vibe one can bounce to another spot. We were initially charged $300 just to enter, by the bald black security in the front with no bottle or table service included. Once inside, when we attempted to go upstairs, security told us we would have to pay because we had 3 guys with us!!! We would have not been charged if it was only us girls. What made the situation even worse was watching other guests being allowed upstairs without being asked to pay the same additional fee. When I questioned why we were being treated differently, the security guard told us that if we weren't going to pay, we would have to "wait until he decided" to let us upstairs. I felt completely singled out and discriminated against, especially when we could clearly see that the same rules were not being applied to everyone. Despite everything that had already happened, we still ended up spending almost $1,000 on bottle service. After spending that amount, we were then told that we would not receive a sign because there was now supposedly a $1,000 minimum required to get one. This was especially frustrating because we had been at Bar Lis just ONE WEEK BEFORE, purchased a bottle for essentially the same price, and received a sign without any issue. There was no mention of a $1,000 minimum at that time. How does the policy suddenly change within one week, and why was none of this communicated before we spent our money? Between the $300 entry charge, being told to pay another $100 per person to go upstairs, and then spending almost $1,000 on bottle service only to be given a completely different explanation about their minimums, the entire experience felt misleading, inconsistent, and extremely unprofessional. This also did not feel like an issue with just one employee. Multiple employees were involved in the way the situation was handled, and management did nothing to make us feel that our concerns were being taken seriously. For a venue that presents itself as upscale, I expected transparency, professionalism, and consistent treatment of guests. Instead, we experienced unexpected charges, changing explanations, disrespectful treatment, and what I personally felt was discriminatory treatment. After spending that kind of money and being treated this way, I will absolutely not be returning.

Dare I say, best karaoke bar in LA?!…read more This place is EPIC! The whole downstairs is a typical karaoke bar, then upstairs is a few dozen private rooms. The drinks are great, the vibes are impeccable, and it's a good time. The service was second to none, with waiters and bussers coming in often to check in and make sure we were all set and that empty glasses were being taken out of our private room. The whole upstairs looks more like a club than your typical K-Town karaoke rooms! It may be pricier than other karaoke bars or rooms, but it is easily worth the cost for the experience and expansive song selection.

We couldn't have it on for very long at a time, but it was so fun. These elements added an extra layer of fun to the experience. The seating was like a long cushy booth with a low coffee table in the middle for food and beverages. We had our own thermostat to control the temperature in our room. The bathroom was outside the room and was nice and clean. A staff member got us set up in the room and showed us how to use everything, took our drink orders and came back to check on us a few times to see if we needed anything. We were so excited about everything in the room, we didn't get around to ordering food this time. Our room booking was about $25 per person for 2 hours (which is their minimum). The menu looked moderately priced. We had so much fun! The ambiance reminded me of the private room karaoke places I've been to in Hong Kong and Japan, more so than the places I've been in K-town. We didn't go to the open karaoke bar on the ground floor (rooms were upstairs), but that looked nice and fun too.

When I arrived around 9 PM the downstairs wasn't busy and there were several bartenders standing behind the bar. Not one person greeted me, smiled, acknowledged me, or asked if I'd like a drink. I had to flag someone down just to ask a question and later had to wave again to order a cocktail. What surprised me most was that this wasn't a one-time interaction - it continued throughout the 2 hours I was there. The bartenders seemed annoyed whenever anyone approached them, stood around with their arms crossed, and made no effort to engage with guests. There was no friendliness, hospitality, or even basic customer service. As someone who goes out frequently in West Hollywood, the contrast was pretty noticeable. It's a shame because the venue itself has a lot going for it and the drinks were excellent. But hospitality matters, and the attitude of the staff completely overshadowed the experience. Had so much fun here with my friends!…read more Came here a few Saturday's ago and really enjoyed myself. We arrived around 11 pm and had no issue getting in. While the place was packed, we didn't feel as if it was overcrowded. Music was amazing and the staff was great! Definitely recommend when looking for a fun place on a Saturday night!
