When our ceiling fan died my husband was unable to install a new one because our ladder is not tall enough (vaulted ceiling) and his dominate hand was out of commission. After contacting multiple electricians who either declined the job, did not return our call, could not get to the job for months, or gave astronomically expensive quotes we finally found Zwicker (sad that the company is last in an alphabetized list, because they are number one in our book!). What a rare experience! A timely returned call, a pleasant discussion, an appointment within the week, and a reasonable quote. Was this too good to be true? The day before our appointment we received a call with a window of time within which they would arrive, and they arrived within that window the next day. We had purchased the new fan and of course, parts of it did not mesh well with the existing down rod. No problem, the electrician had numerous tricks up his sleeve to make the fan work and even ran to a local hardware store to pick up a coupler to ensure a good fit. The work was top-notch and we were charged exactly the amount of the quote (plus a few dollars for the part that he purchased). The entire experience was pleasant and stress free. Our house was hit by lightning at 2:00 am on a Tuesday morning. Tripped every breaker in the house, fried several pieces of electronics, computers, smoked some outlets, etc. We had to have the fire department check our attic for fire as you could see and smell smoke all throughout the second floor. I've used Zwicker twice now and I will continue to use them in the future! One job was a pretty big one, involving changing out the outlets in the house and changing out the breaker box, the other project was smaller, it involved changing the location of outlets and installing a new 220. Each time they've been here, they've made me feel assured they knew what they were doing. They did all the proper arrangements with getting the power turned off and the town inspector to approve the work. And they're so reasonably priced, I had hunted for quotes and other companies tried to up-sell me and add on a whole bunch of fees. Upon arriving (30 minutes late) to my home, he claimed he had tried calling my phone to ensure he had the correct address. I didn't receive any phone calls at all. Once he arrived he said he had to go back to his truck to get what he needed. ‍ We explained our problem, which we didn't realize was a super easy fix. You see, our range made a large popping sound and wouldn't come back on. We checked our fuse box with a multimeter, which showed that everything was fine. We did have a second (91 y/o) breaker box that we didn't think was in working order. the electrician said it controlled the kitchen. He found a fuse that was blown. He said he'd have to drive to a hardware store because he didn't have the fuse needed on hand. He was gone just briefly; he found the fuse right up the street from our house. He put replaced the fuse and all was well. He was thorough and quick to fix the problem which is why I didn't give just one star. However, he was 30 minutes late, had the wrong phone number, and charged us $130(!!!!) for a fuse change!!! Yep, you read that right... $130 to change one fuse! So, $60 just to show up, $60 in labor, and $10 for the fuse!!!!! I we'll never call upon Zwicker Electric again and I definitely don't recommend them. Getting ripped off isn't something I'd want my business to be known for. Maybe Zwicker Eletric will rethink their business practices!? read more

Gate keeper impressions are usually telling of how the experience will go. After this experience I do not feel confident. First off, Yelp made it way easy to get quotes from several electricians, and I went with Terry Zwicker because he was more gave me a decent quote with a friendly attitude over the phone. I had several outlets that needed to be grounded, and he gave me a run-down of what he might do. He showed on time for the appointment. Actually, he showed up an hour early, but I didn't complain about the punctuality. He quickly did a survey of what supplies he would need and headed to Lowe's to get them. He returned quickly and within half an hour, he was done. He checked all the outlets, and we were all good. He was in and out before my actual scheduled time. Nothing but nice things to say about these guys. I filled out an online information form on a Saturday and they contacted me later that day. They came out to evaluate the job the next day (a Sunday) and returned to do the job the following Saturday. They weren't bothered by the rain despite part of the job being outside. They completed the job early and even fixed our 10 foot umbrella which came with no screws. Best of all? After a long wait our new used hot tub is finally up and running!! For lack of a better word, I'm sad. I used Zwicker back in April to fix my wonky microwave. Without my knowing it, the microwave was hooked up to a lower amp breaker which was bad news bears. Long story short, I fried a breaker, sparks were flying from the outlet box, and I was panicking. I used Yelp's price estimate tool to ask around various electricians and one of the owners of Zwicker, Terry, called me not long after (at 10 pm) to discuss the problem. He came out the next day to troubleshoot. I ended up hiring Zwicker to run new wiring from my microwave to my electric panel in the basement and install a new, more appropriate breaker. They got me on the schedule quickly and two guys came out and busted out the job in an hour. Total bill was $225. Super reasonable for peace of mind knowing my microwave wasn't going to explode. Fast forward to a month ago. During a project, two of my outlets in my basement suddenly stopped working. Both my father and I checked the breaker boxes and couldn't see anything wrong. Worried something else was happening, I called up Zwicker to help. I made sure to ask the receptionist if I would be charged. She said yes, there would be a service fee. Which I expected to be $50-60 based on the last time I used them and was A-OK with that fee. There was some minor scheduling confusion. I thought I was scheduled for one afternoon, took off work and sat at home...but turns out I guess I got the date wrong (even though I could have sworn I didn't, oh well). So had to re-schedule it to fit my work day. That Friday, Terry had free time and was able to swing by my house earlier than expected, which worked out because I was already home with a plumber. He came by, and 10 minutes later, said it was a thrown breaker. I felt (and still feel) so dumb for not having seen it. He left the house saying it would be the regular service fee. Again, I'm expecting to pay $60. Imagine my surprise when I got the bill 2 days later for $120. I was so upset. My blood pressure probably sky rocketed. I spoke to Terry on the phone a couple of days later and expressed my confusion. He proceeded to say their prices had to go up due to insurance, employee wages, new taxes, etc. I get that. I do. What I don't appreciate is why I got charged for $60 worth of labor, a full hour of labor, when he was at my house 10 minutes. I requested the $60 labor fee be removed. No can do, he said. He did nicely offer to give me a 20% discount for being a returning customer. But said that in the future, know it'll pretty much always be a minimum of $120 for someone to come out, even for simple stuff. So, I'm sad. I thought I had my go-to electrician in Louisville since I'm not from here and I desperately miss having for sure people I can count on. But I don't. I paid the bill, I'm glad to have my microwave in working order, but this has been a definite learning experience. Always know what you're getting into price wise before scheduling work is my best piece of advice because you won't always get transparent honesty. read more

We had power cut off by LG&E because of storm damage. We needed to have everything inspected before they would hook it back up. Everyone was either not answering their phone or couldn't come for a week. Zwicker was out the same day. They took care of everything, called the inspection in, which got LG&E out that afternoon to hook the power back up. They even called the next day to make sure that everything was taken care of. I swear, I checked that dumb breaker box twice and flipped the one for the dryer on and off both times, but still nothing. Finding a good electrician is like finding a good car mechanic or a good plumber, it is always a leap of faith if you don't have a word of mouth recommendation you can trust. After getting some quotes from a few electricians in town (all licensed so not considering "random dude from craigslist"), I found Zwicker to have the most competitive but not suspiciously low price. They were easy to deal with, great about calling me and keeping me informed at what was going on and went the extra mile for me. Even after a bit of a snafu with LG&E's requirements and an old house's electrical system, I still managed to survive with my wallet intact. It is obviously a family business and you can tell they care about doing right by their customers. The only reason for 4 stars is because I couldn't pay by credit card. I happened to have a checkbook around, but sometimes I don't. Now, if they want to set up credit card payments and then give a discount for cash or check since the CC companies charge them... that'd be just fine in my book. read more
