7/29/23 tea experience menu of their sides and tea pairings
    Catherine P.

We registered for afternoon tea on Saturday at 12. Arrived a good 20 minutes before then and there were open stalls marked with wagaya but none of the slanted unmarked stalls. There was some street parking before the parking lot. We also found out there are 5 customer stalls in the back off Kemole lane. Make sure to call if you get there early since there is a keypad locked door to get upstairs (and from the back parking lot). It was a quaint little place with two rooms, one for their shop and another for 10 people to sit in. The menu consisted of a few sweet and a few savory items. Plus some pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese balls) and pappadum (deep fried Indian dough) with their own vegan corn butter and strawberry chunda. They mentioned changing the items every month to fit with the seasons so that make it great for those who want a variety of things that are always fresh! My favorite item was the play on ants on a log. The celery purée with peanut butter crumbles and pickled cotton candy grapes and homemade raisins was so very interesting. My second favorite was the tomato tarte tatin because it was sweeet not savory and perfect crème fresh on top. The dessert, a parfait with vanilla new ice cream, shoyu caramel, hoji lantern, and kinako whipped cream was the perfect cold and refreshing ending. The drinks started with a refreshing peach purée and sparking ume kobucha. They suggested pouring the ume into the peach creating an umami flavored drink. However if you don't like that I suggest drinking them separately. The cold camomile and sencha was also nice and refreshing. The hot cacao and hojicha was a bit bitter but very strong. None of the teas were beautifully mixed like their walk up bar items I have seen in pictures. The teas we received would be typical of an afternoon tea. Thankfully they all weren't hot because the room has no AC and only the coolness of the windows. This experience is not typical of your Waikiki high tea. You may give up the beach view but the attention to detail, uniqueness of each food item (not factory output of sandwiches and desserts), and changing menu are what makes this place a true gem. I would recommend this 1.5 hour experience for small or private groups to experience. It truly was an elevated experience, just like having your own private chef. They also have a private bathroom if you happen to drink too much tea before heading home.

Update 2/23 Happy galentines month! We were lucky enough to score tickets for the inaugural afternoon tea today on 2/19/23. There was 3 different time slots, $25 a person for a tasting menu which included teas, savory items and desserts. The set up was insanely beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. I think we got the cutest set up between the two rooms also! Pink is my favorite color! Here we met the owner, the chef, and the barista who all carefully explained everything in detail. They'll soon be offering private tea parties with a minimum of 4 guests. It was approximately $500 for 2 hours. Today we got to try a taste of each item - my favorites was the finger sandwiches. We also got one hot and one cold tea. And some yummy scones with ube butter, lavender honey butter, and clotted cream with pistachios. I honestly thought that we would be sharing a table with other people, but it was nice that we got our own table to ourselves for our party. It was a great way to celebrate galentines! ----------- Super cute shop. It's a mix of florist, coffee/tea, and some other products being sold there. It's a small yet cozy space on the second floor where mama woo is. You'll need to call first to be let in (it's gated on the bottom) They have a few stalls there. The owner said that it's normally busier around noon. But there's also free street parking if you go on a Sunday. I went to try the coffee. They have very unique flavors and she'll advise you to take a look at the different ingredients and smell the coffee beans first. The coffee did taste a little different from what I'm used to. And I usually don't drink it straight black either. I think next time I'll try the ceremonial green tea. They also let me bring in my dog. I saw other dogs went in too! But most of the dogs that went are on the smaller side so maybe it's just small dogs are ok? (Shrugs ) is

Matcha latte unlike any I've had before! So bright!

What a beautiful space! We saw this place on someone else's IG reel and had to check it out. The space is upstairs in the building adjoining Mama Woo's BBQ. Free parking lot as well as some street parking. Win! The proprietors have a workspace downstairs right near the stairway. The stairway itself is gated, and you have to call a number to get access. The number is on a big sign right near the bottom of the stairway, so no confusion there. I didn't get the name of the woman who helped me but she was so nice! It's a fairly limited menu - don't expect a Starbuck's type of experience. But what we had was so delicious and unlike anything I had ever had before. My daughter ordered a matcha latte. Sounds simple right? But this matcha is ceremonial grade, and that translated into a brightness I had never before experienced in a matcha. That is really the only way I can describe it. Made with oat milk, this latte seems to have just the right amount of sweetness that seems to serve to highlight the matcha itself. Amazingly balanced! I ordered the hoji tea latte. I had never had hoji before. The woman who helped us said that hoji is traditionally served during hospital stays and to older people and children, and has less caffeine than matcha. One sip and I could see why. While the matcha was very bright and forward on your palate, the hoji was mellow and smooth, comforting. The leaves are roasted, and that really comes through. It has a rounder taste than matcha, tasting a bit of black tea. The sweetness of this latte was also complementary, really making you feel the oneness of the drink, and less the sum of its parts. She explained thar hoji is becoming more popular of late, resulting in hoji ice cream and other hoji flavored desserts. You can purchase the matcha, hoji, and even coffee beans (they bring the beans in from a roaster in NY) for home consumption. But the place is so beautifully appointed that I feel like it is such a treat to come here! Also available in the space are a bit of jewelry, plants, and other home decor. Everything is so gorgeous you just want to buy it up! This is not a large space - really just two small rooms - but it's done so well you really feel special here. And the customer service was wonderful! We were surprised to see the business was not yet listed on Yelp, but we're happy to tell you lovely folks about a la maison. Stop by and chat a while! The drinks are superb, and the decor offerings are top notch as well!

Love this place, Mami, and Yuji so so sooooo much! It's my little escape from the hustle and bustle of work/town/stressful life. They recently started their new Experience Bar, where you can order from a curated selection of tea and coffee. Each drink is served with a small treat, which varies on the daily so you will always be surprised. So far I've tried their matcha latte, rose matcha latte, and hojicha latte. My favorite is the hojicha. I love the roasted flavor. The Experience Bar is open Wed-Fri 12pm-5pm and Sat-Sun 11am-5pm Throughout the shop you will see beautiful selection of antiques from plates, vases, cups, etc. that you are able to purchase. What caught my eyes were the chasen (matcha whisk), matcha bowls, and the assortment of matcha powders. My fiance noticed that I loved them so much that he bought me one of each and now I make matcha on the daily at home. Parking: They share a lot with the other businesses in the building: Wagaya, Mama Woos, etc. or you can find street parking. They are located upstairs, above Wagaya. There is a gated door at the bottom of the staircase. Just call their phone number and they will come down and let you in.

    Iced Hojicha Latte

I had the time of my life here. Every inch of this place is carefully curated and tasteful, from the shopping to the menu to decor. The iced hojicha latte was spectacularly good, so good that ordering one wasn't enough. It was DELICIOUS. They make the hojicha in front of you and use a tea bowl with whisk to prepare it. The hojicha was then served on a small Japanese lacquer platter in a very chic twist on a modern cafe meeting traditional aesthetics. My friend and I were also fortunate enough to be treated to some plum blossom incense from Nijo castle in Kyoto that burned as we drank our iced hojicha latte. It was a very thoughtful, joyful experience. The owners were so incredibly delightful and nice to meet. I can't wait to return.

Very personal experience, got to learn about tea and preparation from the artisan. The drink matched so well with the cute desserts. Cute little trinkets and gifts at the store for omiyage or just for personal collection. Calming athmosphere! Cant wait to come back ! :)

What an amazing experience. Came with a friend who's visiting the island and we both enjoyed our time together. Ordered the rose matcha latte and Hoji Cha. Afterwards, we also tried the cold brew coffee. The server was very attentive. Will definitely come back here again.

I stumbled upon this cafe through an Instagram post and was adamant about coming here on my trip to Honolulu (dragged my partner here lol). We were greeted with a delightful host and was enamored with the decor and ambience of à la maison. Adorned with vintage furniture and contemporary tableware complimented the craft of matcha preparation more intimate. We saw the whisking and pour for our respective drinks of choice. My partner had an iced matcha latte with oat milk, while I had the iced matcha Americano. The matcha latte was one of the best I've ever tasted. Creamy, sweet, with the natural umami notes were as smooth as silk. For my drink, I selected the Maru - a medium ceremonial grade of matcha. It has a nice balance of both sweet and umami notes. Basically, it was not bitter or overly sweet. Seamless in its taste. I drink matcha every morning and I couldn't leave without taking a tin of the Maru back to Los Angeles. Each of our drinks came with tasty nuts and cookies to munch on. I wish I lived in Honolulu, because I couldn't image not having this matcha experience every morning in my routine. Now I'm contemplating how I'm going to fit in à la maison for the remainder of my time here. In short, I would highly recommend à la maison if you love tea. They also serve coffee too!

    Hojicha

On my recent vacation to Oahu, I came across à la maison via Instagram search and yelp reviews. I don't often drink matcha but the environment and pictures looked really pleasant. I decided to come by midday and was pleasantly greeted by Yuuji. He was extremely friendly and explained the menu to me with the options. The space was nice with natural lighting and ambiance. From beginning to end the experience was nice. Highly recommend!

    matcha americano and hojicha latte

My friend and I tried this place after a light lunch. It was a Thursday afternoon, around 1:00, and we were the only patrons. The shop is tiny but very cute. After a look at the menu and a quick chat with the owner, I ordered the hojicha latte and my friend ordered the matcha americano. The owner served us cookies and a card detailing ingredients. We got different cookies, so I assume they were to complement our drinks. Then the owner came out and prepared our drinks in front of us. My hojicha was whisked then poured over a glass of oat milk. My friend's matcha was whisked and poured over ice water. (We figured out it was prepared americano style, not poured into americano coffee). Then we sat, chatted, and enjoyed our cookies. All of the lattes are prepared with oat milk and the cookies were made with almond flour, so this place is dairy and gluten free. My latte cost over $8, but it was absolutely delicious and I thi k worth the overall experience and ambiance of the place. A lovely afternoon was had and I would love to return.

What a magical place. I loved the vibe in here. I came to try the hojicha latte and it was so so good! You can see how your drink is made right in front of you. You can tell that they put so much care and love into your drink. They also had so many cute tea sets and other things. I wanted to buy everything! I am definitely coming back to try the tea tasting!

My father brought a huge corporate account to Cindys, which they made A LOT of money from. He had a personal relationship with the owners, which kept us loyal for decades. After my father passed, the company cut tie with Cindy's. I was devastated and didn't understand why. Cindy's always gave us the best service. Recently I found out why relations were cut. Cindy's has really changed and no longer provides the great customer service they once did. I placed a very important order for an event on the mainland to be shipped out and arrive a day before the event. I placed the order over a month in advance and was promised it would be just fine and well taken care of. Well, when the week of the event came, I called every day, multiple times a day, just to confirm everything. They won't answer their phones. I sent emails and messages through their website. Those also went unanswered. I even went to the store in person before work at 6am, nut it wasn't open yet. I had no way of getting in touch with them and wondered if they had shut down. I had to go on the faith that they have always provided us stellar service in the past. I was so wrong. Cindy's completely forgot to send my order at all, and left me without anything, the day before the event. The amount of stress I went through trying to find a florist on the mainland to provide lei was insane. Cindy's finally answered my many messages the day before. They said they could try to overnight my order that they forgot, but there were no promises it would get there on time, since the event was on a Saturday. I still have not been sent a receipt from them, which I asked for multiple times, or confirmation of the mailing. The lei did go, and my credit card got a huge charge, but without the receipt, I don't even know what I paid them for. And really, after all they put us through, they should have comped the order. My dad would be rolling in his grave to know how far downhill the company that he loved to support has gone. As for me, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I do truly hope they can get it together and grow back into the great company they once were.

Up until now, they've always done a great job, but this recent experience for Mother's Day was extremely disappointing. First, the delivery driver brought the wrong bouquet. I paid $209.41 (including delivery), but my mom received a bouquet that was clearly not what I ordered later confirmed to be a lower priced arrangement. I had to call customer service, who then contacted the driver immediately. While I appreciate that they responded quickly, it still took about 47 minutes for the driver to return, take back the incorrect bouquet, and retrieve the correct one from the truck. When the correct arrangement finally arrived, the presentation was still off. The vase was too short for the flowers, making the bouquet look unbalanced and like it was falling out. For over $200, I expected much better attention to detail and quality. On top of that, the company advertised "free delivery," but that only applied to very limited areas on the island. I still had to pay a delivery fee despite the initial mistake being entirely on their end, which felt misleading. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience, especially for a special occasion like Mother's Day. I've had good experiences before, but this one really missed the mark.
