Not gonna lie: first impression wasn't great. Run down strip malls aren't our thing, and then we discovered that Roz's is inside a pharmacy. But the "Yelpers" say it's awesome, so in we go. It's a small diner tucked to the left inside the front door of this wonderful ole-timey pharmacy. Seat yourself and order up. If you want to shop à la Cracker Barrel style, while you wait for your food, do it! Ms. Roz is doing her amazing cooking behind the counter. The food was delicious and the portions are so big, you can often share. We enjoyed our meal immensely and service was fast. There were 7 homemade cakes on the counter waiting for someone to order a slice! When you get to the east side of Richmond, come check out Roz's and then shop next door at the antique mall. Good times!!

Complete with black & white checkered tablecloths, cozy booths and tables, and a menu with all American favorites including homemade limeades... this is the perfect spot for lunch. I've had the egg salad, the grilled cheese, and the turkey sandwiches. The grilled cheese needs more cheese, it was a little skimpy, but the other sandwiches were good! The service is friendly! I love coming here for a bite after antiquing next door. The Colonial Pharmacy has a small gift shop, toiletries, medicines, and home health care items. I gave 3 stars because the restroom was pretty gross... that hallway and bathroom needs a facelift!

We were first greeted by the most personable, young man that truly made us feel welcome. That's there motto "Welcome Home" His name is EJ. You will know it's him. This restaurant is a cute neighborhood landmark. It's a little small but not tight or uncomfortable with a full bar for additional seating. Because it has that old school I know this food is going to be FIRE, it's Perfect. Soooooo, the music certainly fits this cool old school vibe. The menu was under a very clean glass table topper to view and order. Very big Plus, Sanitary !!!!! I ordered the Fried Chicken (2pcs white), corn muffin comes with the meal, candied yams and cabbage. My plate was BEAUTIFUL, pictures will confirm. The chicken was golden brown, crispy on outside, flavorful and moist on the inside. YES, like my mom's use to be. The yams were perfectly sweet and the caaaabage was delicious. Go early to avoid the crowds, because everyone wants this good food and hospitality. Ooooh Lord, I forgot our extremely attentive server Dana. He checked in while being super busy with other customers, making sure the glasses were refilled in a timely manner. He also offered to go drinks, and very nice to go containers. This review is long because it's accurate and I need to share my experience. Last but not least, the owner came by and asked how was everything with her warm, down home hospitality. She also ask that we visit next door, Mama J's Market, so we did. It was sooo cool. I felt like I was in Greenwich Village NYC. If the restaurant is too busy for you, there in the market you can order from the kiosk and a staff member will bring it to you. There are refrigerated food and meal options to grab and go. Snacks, drinks, a little fresh produce, household and personal items. The Perfect Neighborhood Market. If you want the Old Historic Jackson Ward feeling of community, come to Mama J's Kitchen and Market. Thank you !!!!!!!

It wasn't as seasoned as I expected it to be for a soul food restaurant. The Mac and cheese was about a 6 and the greens weren't very flavorful so we have them a 5. The candied yams were really good. Very tender and not too sweet. Our server wasn't the most personable, but he got the job done. The music was great! Parking was easy on a Sunday evening. I do recommend this place, but just be prepared to use the tartar sauce for your fish if you want a little razzle dazzle.

One of the best spots in downtown Richmond (Scott's addition area) for a small group to enjoy a great meal in a cozy setting! Only street parking is available, but it wasn't too difficult to find a spot. The atmosphere: Very rustic vibe with some farmhouse-style decor. They have table, high-top, bar, and patio seating available. The food: I opted for the Chicken and Waffles with a side of cheese grits. I chose to make it hot for more spice. It's served with one whole waffle, two large pieces of fried chicken, and syrup on the side. The chicken was not seasoned as much as I hoped and wasn't as spicy as I expected, which was a bummer. The cheese grits were alright as well, but not as flavorful as I hoped. My partner ordered the Double Barrel Bowl, and he really enjoyed it. It was packed with pulled pork and was plentiful and filling. The service: Great and kind service from Mave (I believe that is her name but I'm not entirely sure). She informed us about the daily specials and was attentive throughout our visit.

The staff was kind enough to seat us earlier than our original reservation, which was a really nice touch and much appreciated. I was also happy to see a decent number of gluten-free options. While the main dishes are a bit limited, most of the sides are gluten-free. Now for the food, the crispy chicken sandwich was the highlight of the meal. The Smashburger was also delicious. I ordered the rockfish without the bun, while my dad had it with the bun, and both were great. The beet salad was fresh and flavorful, and the fries were solid. The mac & cheese, unfortunately, was not good at all. On the plus side, the hot cider was delicious. Desserts were a bit of a mixed thoughts. The bread pudding was definitely the best one we tried and really enjoyable. However, the chocolate peanut butter pie was a big disappointment. It was extremely hard and cold (not pie texture), the peanut butter wasn't creamy at all, and it honestly tasted more like a protein bar loaded with sugar. The crust also tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for a while--disappointing. Overall, we still enjoyed our visit and many of the dishes were great, but the dessert experience could definitely be improved.

For a Saturday night, the atmosphere was lively but not overwhelmingly so. It is a small space so I was very happy that there were still side tables available to sit at & enjoy our food & conversation. The staff were very welcoming, helpful & courteous. & although my husband were probably the most aged patrons in the place, we never felt out of place & I sincerely appreciated that we were able to go there & feel comfortable being a part of the Saturday night community. IYKYK As for the food. The Fried mushrooms were absolutely yummy. They were crunchy on the outside with a light & fluffy texture to the mushrooms inside. We ordered the Chicago Dog & the Sloppy Joe Dog & Black Lodge has the BEST hot dogs I have ever tasted! & believe me I have eaten a lot of hotdogs in my lifetime. Their hotdogs are juicy & full of flavor. My husband is still talking about their hotdogs a day later & how we have to go back again[this was his first visit]. For drinks we had the Jager-Rita, Miller High Life Pony & Green Tea shot. They all were great & complimented our food perfectly. The Green tea shot was so smooth, I definitely recommend trying it If shots are your forte & even if they are not. I am not a shot person but I really enjoyed this particular drink. I definitely recommend Black Lodge if you enjoy a very casual, laid back bar/cafe type of restaurant that has food & drinks that are very upscale but reasonably priced. Also, the atmosphere is very bright & bubbly. A perfect Saturday night hang out type of vibe. So once again I definitely highly recommend giving this establishment a try!
