I like Big Herm's every now and again, but it's definitely heavy. Last time it took me literal hours to finish my sandwich. I had ordered the "chicken cutlet," which was cut up chicken tenders...not a chicken cutlet at all. A chicken cutlet should be thin. Hopefully eventually they'll realize that and either modify the sandwich or update their menu to state "chicken cutlet sandwich." Nonetheless, it's good. Awesome soul food! I walked over to get their chicken sandwich thinking it would be a typical chicken sandwich only to find they had hooked me up with a PO'BOY. And I mean the chicken was overflowing. It was way better than I expected. The side of greens was good too. I was full and VERY satisfied. I believe the chicken sandwich is a special on Tuesdays for $7.99. Even paying full price it was absolutely worth it. Have had Big Herm's for a number of years, both as take-out and as a caterer and I just love their food...went again on Friday during Black Restaurant Week. I had the catfish basket, and wife had the chicken finger basket. Chicken finger portions were nicely-sized and very fresh (you have option of fried or grilled. Wife had fried). Very good french fries, and a small container of slaw. I'm a slaw "nut" and it was a bit under-seasoned--and as I complain at so many places, smaller than it should be(!), but passable. My catfish basket included several pieces of deep fried catfish...hot, fresh, not overly breaded...in other words, one of the best pieces of fish I've had in a very long time. Just delicious! Trying to watch calories so had the steamed broccoli (it is what it is...), and slaw. Dessert was chocolate-pecan cookies (broccoli makes it possible to eat a cookie). 3 nicely-sized cookies...very tasty. Put some ice cream between 2 of them and you have a great ice cream sandwich. When I read many of the reviews, the lower ones often seem to have delivery being one of the issues. Pro tip: if you live close, go there and order at the window. Get it hot and fresh; then get it home quickly. Makes all the difference. Wish it had longer hours, wish it had a dining room...but all in all one of the great small, independent, soul food restaurants in the city. read more

I love soul food but like the best of any cuisine, it's usually better served through your grandma. For that reason I'm generally skeptical but Big Herm's is the real deal. First thing to notice as you step inside is there's no seating area outside of a few chairs you can sit in while you wait for your food to be ready. If you're put off, don't be, it's a good sign. The menu is pretty simple. Some sandwiches, wings, and some baskets. Word to the wise, if you're getting a basket have someone to split it with. Soul food isn't a snack, it's not even a meal, it's a feast that will require a nap soon after. And Big Herm's is no different, you're going to get the itis and you're going to need a pillow. My personal favorite is the seafood combo basket (catfish, oysters, and shrimp) and for only $12 dollars you really aren't finding a better deal anywhere. Pair your order with some collards, mac n cheese, and yams for the best experience. I knocked off a star because the cornbread just wasn't for me. It was cold and hard and after the delicious meal I was just let down. Don't let that stop you from visiting thought because the food is amazing. read more

Looking for a quick bit to eat while working downtown and stumbled into Big Herns. Ive heard about this place and seen pics of the food via social media but never had the opportunity to try it. The restaurant is TAKE OUT only and they are only open on the WEEKDAYs. When I came to order thankfully the line wasn't long and we got our food within 10-15 min which I feel is standard. They have a little picnic table to wait which happens to be available but if your on the go I would definitely call ahead and pick up. I believe they also have grubhub service for delivery as well. I was with my coworker and she got the catfish bites with sweet potato fries, cornbread, and coleslaw. The fish was cooked perfectly and not oily at all but light and fluffy. The sweet potato fires were hand down addicting, I couldn't stop stealing her fries . I liked that they weren't too sweet and they were perfectly cooked, even the cornbread had actual bits of corn in it topped with a cinnamon glaze. I got the blanked chicken sandwich which came with bacon and caramelized onions . The chicken was juicy and my bacon was crispy. The only I thing I would change is the bread, which was kinda soggy and couldn't hold together all deliciousness of my sandwich. The mac& cheese sooooo cheesy and deff baked about not box made. Shout out to the staff at Big Herns. I had an issue with my meal and cashier was quick to fix the situation plus she was really nice. Bonus I got some free cookies for the inconvenience and they were really good (chocolate cinnamon pecan). Ordered via Uber eats. Got the buffalo chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries, collard greens, cornbread and the peach bread pudding. The chicken was hard in certain places like it was reheated but taste wise was decent, kinda bland but the blue cheese and breading helped . The collard greens was not good at all, it was sweeter than expected. The cornbread was more pasty than grainy if that makes sense. The peach bread pudding was dry but ok. I don't often get a chance to het Big Herm's due to the limited hours and me being a teacher and all so I totally took this opportunity to get my Herm's on. I ordered the blackened chicken salad and it was the perfect bridge from my decadent NYC trip to my normal, healthy(ish) eating. The chicken is incredibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. I am new to the Richmond area and this has been (so far) one of the highlights of eating in RVA. As I usually do, I let the employee know it was my first time and if they had any recommendations. With that, I went ahead and ordered a Big Herm's Wings Basket, southern fried. The basket comes with six wings, a side order (Mac & Cheese in this case), and a piece of cornbread. Even after driving it home and the walk up to the apartment, the food was still warm and delicious. The wings were juicy, the mac was baked well and the right amount of cheesy, and the cornbread tasted just as cornbread should. Big Herm's Kitchen is an excellent restaurant for catering. We have now had Big Herm's Kitchen delivered to our office for lunches with out drug reps. They delivered right on time at 11:30am and set up the food for us. The delivery guy forgot utensils so he went all the way back to the restaurant to deliver them to us at Short Pump. That's awesome service! Our menu for this lunch consisted tossed salad, coconut rice with raisins, green beans, and Turkish coffee spiced chicken. The salad was pretty good considering most places give you lettuce, tomatoes and some cucumber. This one had all that plus cheese, onions, boiled eggs and what appears to be home made croutons. The coconut rice wasn't very "coconutty" which I was grateful for since I don't personally love coconut. The raisins added a sweet juicy surprise while eating the rice and was even more balanced with a bite of chicken mixed in. The green beans were not from a can and cooked perfectly (bright green and still had a slight crunch). Not sure the exact seasonings, but I could eat those beans every night! I am VERY picky about the meat I eat. I don't eat any meat on a bone and I don't eat dark meat chicken. Well, to my initial disappointment, the chicken was thighs. This restaurant is part of Black Restaurant Week here in Richmond, and I was so excited to try anything they were serving so I sucked it up and gave it a try. Oh My Goodness!!! What a flavorful, moist and tender piece of meat! Now dessert...always a big hit in our office. We received chocolate chip cookies, chocolate pound cake and lemon pound cake.
