Prodded by a recent article in my Family Motor Coaching Magazine (FMC Aug 2018) about adding a residential RV electrical box, I decided to add 50 amp RV service. None of the electrical contractors mentioned this service in their resumes and my magazine had devoted much of the article to ensuring the importance that the electrician knows what he's doing and the consequences of extensive damage to your rig and appliances if done wrong. The article listed the NEMA codes for both 30 amp and 50 amp service and warned that industrial / welding connections are the same amperage but are wired completely different. They said it was very important that the electrician knew what he was doing. After reviewing Yelp I decided to contact 1-Step Up Electrical due to their high ratings and being local to my area. I contacted the owner Ed and he came out later that day to review and give a quote. Ed mentioned that he was very familiar with RV wiring and it would not be a problem. Having the warnings from the article in my mind I thought it prudent to confirm the NEMA code anyway just to make sure. The NEMA code for 50 Amp RV service is 14-50R. Another electrician came out on the scheduled day and in less than an hour had our connection completed. I had to tell him which way the plug is positioned (round pin up) (RED FLAG WARNING) and I asked him to check the amperage to ensure there were 120 watts per side and 240 for both. I did not have the coach at the house to check that the plug matched but everything else checked out so I paid him and sent him on his way. The magazine article had also addressed the problem of faulty electrical boxes encountered in campgrounds by recommending testing the connection for proper wiring before plugging in to avoid damage to the RV and appliances. I bought an in-line 50 amp Connection Tester / Surge Protector on Amazon which arrived a couple of days after the RV connection was added. Guest what - the plug and the connection were completely different (see pictures). I-Step Up had installed a 50 amp industrial connection not the RV connection requested. I called Ed received an apology and the tech came out promptly and put the proper connection in. All good now and thank you for rectifying the problem quickly. The point of this review is just to warn the consumer to not take things for granted and for the contractors to make sure they know what they are doing when working with various connection configurations. read more

Based on numerous positive reviews, I was optimistic on scheduling an estimate for a home project to install a new line for exterior porch lights, etc.. Unfortunately, I had to call to follow-up on a scheduled visit after an hour of a no-show. I appreciate Ed was apologetic for double-booking and he'll come-by/follow-up after a few hours to finish up a current job. Unfortunately, I never heard back from Ed. Great service and awesome staff! We called 1-Step Up Electric for two outlet installations behind our wall mounted televisions. Ed, the owner was quick to answer and accommodating to our early morning schedule. When his staff arrived for the appointment, they were quick to understand our needs and went straight to work. Between the two rooms, they took the time to cover any furniture and cleaned up after the job was done.
