Good food at great prices too! Employee has a personality you may not be used to but just have fun with him. Bowling alley atmosphere

Stayed here 5/7/22. I thought after reading the reviews they would have upped the service but I don't know when that will be since we are fully open now. The food: all fried items were great! The gravy cheese fries were the best thing we ate from there. The breakfast items could use some flavor in the eggs and the toast was so stale. But the hasbrown was good and the bacon/spam/and sausage patty were great! This is also the only place for coffee as the cafe located in the rec room is closed. Pancakes were dry and white. The butter and syrup could not save this. Breakfast plates had eggs, rice or hasbrown, toast or English muffin, and meat. The service: I saw two people working the bowling and food at night. But the breakfast guy had to do the ordering and cooking and I'm assuming if anyone bowled he would have to cater to them too. If eating breakfast I would suggest an early 7 am arrival. We were the second to order that day at 7:11 am and waited 15 min. But the time he took the third order there was a line of 7 people. Price: everything is decently priced for being far from other restaurants. Breakfast was a steal compared to most places in Hilo. Only three types of dishes: breakfast place, breakfast sandwich, and pancakes.

Food was bad. But if you're expecting more out of bowling alley food, that's your own fault.

So the Eagles Lighthouse Cafe is no more. Let this be a eulogy then. For starters, let's go with…read morethe praise. The food was great. Nice down home cookin', reasonably priced. Now for this. The place was festooned with Bible quotes, Biblical vignettes in the windows, and the three flags of Christian Nationalism garishly out front - the US flag, the Israeli flag, and the nationalist "Plea To Heaven" flag. All paradoxically in tatters and never taken in for good keeping. It did not give off a welcome Biblical vibe though - just one of "agree with us or take it down the road." The kitchen and counter personnel were usually fairly nice people who gave great service. The owners, when they were present, gave off something entirely different. Like you were inconveniencing them by being there. Short tempered and terse if they took your order. If you read the earlier comments, you will hear of them coming unhinged and screaming at some customer about something either overblown, or imagined. They refused to pay their employees properly, with something even close to a living wage. When the Hawaii legislature finally hiked the minimum wage, they stuck out an alarmist notice written in childish green marker that they were sooooo sorry but they "had to" raise their prices a bit because the mean old Hawaii house raised the wage. And of course taxes under Biden, yada yada. In the end, the ELC was a victim of the owners' disposition. It's a very bad business model indeed, when politics, religion and greed actually get in the way of doing business. My best wishes to the employees, I really hope they can find something decent to replace this experience. For the self righteous, sanctimonious greed of the owners and operators - as Jesus said, "Yeah verily, you have your reward."

Excellent meal right on the rim at the volcano in the famous Volcano House!…read more We sat right by the window and watched the lava light up at dusk and observed the beginning of what looked like a small eruption outside of the crater opening where the largest steam event had been occurring! The food was very good and we enjoyed the crab cakes and the NY Steak - the kids had hotdog and pasta. We had crème brûlée for dessert and everything was excellent!

This used to be my favorite place to get amazing steak, especially the Rib Eye…read more I went recently with my partner and we finally got a reservation and ordered our favorite $54 steak, (the Rib Eye) only to be extremely disappointed. We ordered it medium, it came out well done, rubbery and not much flavor. I don't even know if they put salt on it. The best thing about the dinner was the view (the volcano was erupting!) and the butter. Spending $120 on a dinner you didn't enjoy hits differently. We have been noticing steak menu changes for a couple years now and we hope this is just a fluke because usually they're excellent. But none of the current steaks are as good as they weee 2 years ago. The waiter didn't seem to want to do anything about it when we said we were dissatisfied. We hope to come again and will just try one steak next time to test the chef and the quality of the steak and if it's cooked correctly.
