Every time I hit the Prunedale cutoff off 101 on my way to and from SoCal or Monterey I've been meaning to try this place. I don't know why I waited so long. Might be the best BBQ I've tasted. And I've been all over the states to Kansas City, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Louisiana (where I may have ridden a mechanical bull.) I ordered the tri-tip sandwich ($19). It comes on house made garlic bread. The tri-tip was perfectly smoked and moist and the sweet Kansas City style sauce is perfect. The side of Mac and cheese with bacon and jalapeños was awesome: My wife got the three meat combo ($37) of sausage, tri-tip and chicken. Sausage was perfectly cooked and spicy and the chicken is moist and flavorful. Prices aren't cheap here. Ended up paying $90 with tax and tip and drinks for two but it was worth it. Their co-owner Nick who greeted us like old friends said they've been around for the past six years and here's hoping for another sixty. We'll be sure to be back for more our next trip down 101. read more

But still overpriced the tri tip is still good, but for some reason the last couple of times I've been there the food is cold and worse of all the beer is lukewarm I let the owner know but I was ignored. One line review: Any port in a storm. We ended up here somewhat randomly. Stuck in terrible traffic trying to get to Pacific Grove, we finally got off the freeway to find some food, hit the restrooms, and rest. 101 Wine Press fit the bill, being just off the freeway and having an outdoor dining option (for COVID safety). We ordered a smoked chicken salad, the brisket plate, and a flight of beers. The salad was the best of the bunch -- generous and fresh. The brisket was fine for what it was but smallish and a bit on the dry side for our taste (some people love it that way); our side (jalapeño mac and cheese) sounded like a good idea, but wasn't spicy or really flavorful in any way. My wife enjoyed the flight of beers, even though she is more of a porter, stout, and ale girl; amazingly, they didn't have any of those, so I think she drank lagers, a cider, and maybe one pilsner. Value was... okay. Frankly, prices were a bit high for what you get, IMO. Service was good, even outdoors, and parking was easy in their shared lot. Bottom line: It did the job. Probably won't go back when we're in the area, though, as I suspect there are better options. read more

Absolutely love this place. I sampled incredible local wines - which I never would've discovered if it hadnt been on this menu. I sat in peace as I completed some tasks on my laptop. I live nearby, have been here many times, and want so badly for 101 to be our local hangout, but my husband and I have given up. The food is way overpriced for being entirely mediocre, the service is confusing and chaotic, and we are almost always incorrectly charged. We've been double charged more than once and have regularly paid different prices for the same beer in one visit. It isn't unusual on a busy night to see the owner running around, stressed, snapping at the servers and cooks and forgetting orders. This spot has a lot of potential, and it seems like the owners are trying really hard to run a good restaurant. There have been a few times where the food was great and the beer was fresh and cold, but unfortunately those were the outliers. read more

Perfect stop on the drive to Monterey. Food was FANTASTIC the salad was crunchy, cold and the tri tip was smokey and delectable. The sausage had cheese in it which was a pleasant surprise. The Non Alcoholic options made me feel more included as they were delicious and well priced. Everything here is even healthy. The bartender Nick was super friendly and quick on our orders and great conversationalist. I'd recommend this place to locals and tourists alike. This review focuses on the restaurant aspect of 101 Wine Press, not the bar. While we've dined here frequently, our experiences have been inconsistent. The quality of service and food seems to fluctuate, often depending on whether the owner is present. I had high hopes for 101 Wine Press as a restaurant, but something always seems to be missing. The location is great, with ample parking and an open floor plan. This has a very unique take on a BBQ place mixed with a wine tasting room. The food seems to lack a clear identity. Santa Maria-style BBQ is what they serve, but the execution is inconsistent. The sausages are generally well-prepared, the tri-tip can be hit or miss ( usually a hit) and their tri-tip sandwiches usually hit the spot, and the chicken has often been dry in our experience. The ribs, which I've only tried once, were bland, but I've seen others order this and appear much better than what I've had. The El Jefe Tri-tip sandwich has always been great. recommend! When the staff is on top of their game, the food is excellent. The portion sizes are adequate and service is on point. However, we've often also experienced lackluster meals and inattentive service, especially when the younger staff is working alone. We've had instances of forgotten drinks and incorrect orders, even during slow periods. The beer selection is limited to what the locals prefer, and they offer their own wines. The menu has been simplified, which I hope will lead to better quality control. More of a get-together have a few drinks kind of spot. 101 Wine Press has the potential to be a fantastic restaurant. With a few improvements in consistency and service, it could become a popular destination. read more

The server was really nice but the food was ok. The tri tip tasted a lot like charcoal and it was kinda cold. We did go at night so partially our fault for going to a bbq place late at night but it would be nice if they did a batch for the early afternoon and another fresh batch for the night. The food was not worth the price to be honest. Salinas city bbq has much better bbq especially for the price. It was pretty quiet and we went as a group of 7 on a Thursday night. Met a friend here on a Friday night. They had a live band and the place was busy. We sat at the bar and I ordered the sangria slushie. It was delicious and refreshing. We ordered the rib eye special which was made for two, and it came with baked potatoes and side salads. They told us to expect a 30 min wait for the steak, which was fine for us. It was absolutely worth the wait. It was a huge steak, perfectly prepared, the potatoes were sooo good, and we hardly touched the salads because we got too full. We had a lot of steak leftover to take home, so we thought the price for the meal was very fair ($70). Honestly it was better than most of the fancy steak houses I've eaten at. Glad to be a local and have this place to meet with friends. read more

BBQ is very tasty here. My cousins took us here while we were in town. It's probably the best BBQ I've had in California. It's really hard to find great BBQ in the Bay Area. We came in the afternoon, and the ribs had just gotten out of the smoker. We had to wait 15 minutes for them. The flavor was excellent! Didn't need extra bbq sauce to give it flavor. It could be a little more tender though. My bite didn't quite come clean off the bone. I tried some of my cousin's brisket. The flavor again was excellent!!! It was nice and tender as well, but it was on the dry side. For the sides, I had the jalapeno mac and cheese and the broccoli salad. The mac and cheese was good. It wasn't spicy at all, which was good for me. The salad was just ok. For dessert, they offer cupcakes from a local Salinas bakery. I can't remember which one, but my cousins say they have really good cupcakes. I was too stuffed to have dessert. On top of the great food, they have great customer service! The folks here are super friendly. Oh, they also have their own wine. I've yet to try. Definitely on my list to visit when I'm in town and craving for BBQ. read more

Welcoming small town vibe, great smoked bbq, full bar, live music events on the weekends. What more could you ask for. The tri tip sandwich is my go to and I always have to get a side of their spicy bbq sauce for some extra fun! My favorite sides are the house chili and jalapeno Mac and cheese but they only have the Mac and cheese on the weekends from what I remember. They also have a great selection of local wines. I went to the restaurant to watch the Garcia vs Davis fight. The food arrived, and there was no flavor at all. Both the tri-tip and the link were dry. Even with bbq added to it, there was no flavor. Came in for the first time with my family. The meat was mediocre at best. Dry, flavorless and honestly my husband smokes meat way better! I ordered a salad with brisket on it, told the waiter that I have celiac disease and no croutons. Salad came with croutons mixed in, when I pointed it out to him(I think he was the manager or owner not sure) he didn't seem concerned. I was super irritated because in some celiacs it will cause hospitalization. The music is blaring like we could not even have a conversation between us and our adult kids. A dj who was so annoyingly loud, patrons getting wasted and twerking, bikers getting rowdy(my husband is a biker so I don't feel uncomfortable around them) but literally this is not a family place. Honestly if they wanted a party spot with loads of drunks dancing and twerking why not make it a bar and stop the false advertisement. Place is a joke and will never come back. Went with my friends last night to the 101 Wine Press in Prunedale for an early dinner before heading to our fun evening in Monterey. We decided to order the Tri Tip Family Meal which clearly states on menu comes with 4 sides & bread. The waitress showed us the list of sides we could choose. We choose two salads, mac n cheese, & pasta salad. My friends ordered a beer each while we waited. The food came out fairly quick & everything was pretty good except, my friends were still waiting on their beers. When we got the bill we noticed that it was higher than what was priced on the menu by $4. When we inquired was told salad sides were $1 extra each & the other sides were like .50c each or something extra. We're like so what sides were we supposed to choose from that was "included with meal"? Was told that was them but was also extra. Like WHAT?? Owner said was stated on menu at bottom somewhere but none of us saw it. The waitress said she'd bring over the menu to show us. We waited another 10min but she never came back with the menu. It wasn't like they were busy we were only other group there at the time. So we just paid & left. Also those beers that were ordered didn't show up till the end of the meal. So we told them it was too late for those & sent them back. I went on their website today to look at the menu they have online which is older. No where on the online menu does it state extra charges for salad sides or any sides. We paid cash too so there wasn't a fee for using credit. Be wary.. I'm seeing posts about a lot of establishments that are sneaking in "fake fees" so the server can collect bigger tips. I'm not sure this is the case because we never saw the menu again to be shown the disclaimer. When you see the word INCLUDED though on a meal description that means that's the price it'll be. Not sure I'll be going back there again. They're lucky we left a tip. read more

Wow what a disappointment today at this place! I am not a complainer this is my first bad review. I ordered the 1/2 chicken with a side of mac n cheese both items were cold. The chicken was so dry and hard as if it had been cooked days ago. My husband had Tri-tip with a side of beans his meal was also cold and his meat was also very dry. We should have sent it back we were too embarrassed. I was left with a horrible after taste in my mouth from just a few bites of the chicken. Never again would we come back here. read more
