We wanted a place we could walk to after a busy day of sightseeing, and lucked out by finding Growers Pub on Yelp! It was a Tuesday night, so we didn't need a reservation. Growers has a good setup--the bar is very lively and full, but it's not the first thing you see when you walk in, as it's off to the side. We had a nice booth, complete with real flower in a glass, and were served promptly by a pleasant lady. She helped me choose my entree, and was attentive and accommodating throughout our meal. I had the chicken Marsala, which is the best I've ever had (and I often order it in restaurants.). My husband had the bone-in pork chop. We had crème brûlée for dessert. Everything was tasty and very well prepared. The restaurant has a very pleasant feel, with lots of dark wood and nice furniture. If I lived nearby I'd come often. read more

Located in old town Salinas -- I was told this spot is one of Salinas' oldest establishments occupying the same building from when it was founded in 1940. Hope they make it to 100 years! What a great surprise! The prime rib was cooked perfectly--tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. It practically melted in my mouth. The silky mashed potatoes were incredibly smooth, buttery, and the perfect complement to the prime rib. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in serving quality comfort food. Prime rib dinner was absolutely delicious so went back today for a prime rib sandwich for lunch- not very good. Tasted nothing like prime rib just warmed up thin well done pieces of roast . Good bun and au ju. Potato salad is made with mashed potatoes. Husband's Cobb salad mediocre with dry chicken. Good margarita and coffee but the best thing the crème brûlée. Tab $69 before tip. Most horrible service ! We were completely ignored. Was ioffered no bread , no refill on ice tea. Literally sat there for 20 minutes waiting for the bill when I asked for a manager, the young man said that there was not one working . Even though I am just a visitor to the city . The Lunch Menu ends at 3 pm -- Sharp! Even if one walks in a few minutes after three o'clock, dinner does not start until 4 pm, yet one must order from their Dinner Menu. Dinner selections come with a salad and bread service, both of which left something to be desired. Both salads were small and lacking, but did include one-half of a cherry tomato. We were told the bread would not arrive for 20 more minutes, as it was still baking. Their Lobster Ravioli was rather disappointing as it was a very small portion and the ravioli was not well-filled. A couple of shrimp are included on the side of this dish. This is perhaps to make up for the absent lobster meat. On a positive note, the thick-cut pork chop had a good flavor but was not succulent. Roasted potatoes and spinach drenched the dish with onion rosemary-mustard red wine sauce. read more

Came in on a Saturday night, this place filled up really quick. My whole experience was great! I got the grilled salmon and my man got the prime rib steak, for appetizers we got calamari and for dessert we got the pear bread pudding. Everything was delicious! The food was 10/10, the service was 10/10- our server Donna was so sweet and amazing. However for cocktails I got an old fashion and it tasted very watered down. 4.5 Lived in Salinas about 8 years now and we've always said that we should try this place. It's just that the outside looks kinda dumpy, the sign broken at some point, and we don't go to bars and looked more like a bar. So, it was never high on our list. FINALLY went today! And surprised to see that it was nice in the inside. And has the original bar that's unique. The dining area was away from the bar and it wasn't loud, like being at Chilli's. The food was really good. Hubby got the Ribeye, his favorite cut and usually picky about it. And this was a winner to him. I enjoyed my Halibut. Also got the calamari as an appetizer, it wasn't rubbery and it was good, but I've had better. The salad that came with dinner could be better, and the blue cheese was on the "sweeter" side which is not for me. Hence the 4.5, the service was excellent! They clear out your tables pretty quick and the drinks filled promptly. We took home a carrot cake. It's not going to win any awards, but it was enjoyable. Finally made it to The Growers Pub and it did NOT disappoint! The location is easy to get to, parking is good, the inside is spotless and clean in my eyes . Bathrooms are cute. My boss and coworkers have been raving about this place for the longest time, and I finally decided to come check it out for myself during lunch. Safe to say, I completely understand the hype now and I don't regret it one bit! I ordered the fries with steak bites and they were absolutely delicious. Now here's the thing , I am not a dessert person. I almost never order dessert anywhere I go, but something told me to give the brownie a try, and wow, I am so glad I did. Finger licking good doesn't even begin to cover it. That alone is worth the trip! But what really made the experience stand out was my server, Jasmine A . She was a solid 10 out of 10 incredibly friendly, attentive, and just an overall joy to be served by. I am someone who takes customer service very seriously, and Jasmine is exactly the kind of energy every restaurant needs more of. She genuinely made the whole experience even better. My filet mignon was excellent may be the best I've ever had. Seasoned to perfection and cut like butter. The scallops potato's were very good. The mashed potato's nice and fluffy. We went based on the website menu, (which is not even close to actual prices), and we hadn't been in a while. The prime rib was not exactly tender but was flavorful. The mashed potatoes were very watery. How no one in the kitchen could have noticed that and/or tasted is beyond me. The rib eye steak was cooked as ordered and very tasty. Came here with a large party for a weekday lunch. The rustic decor very much matches the restaurant's name. Parking.... Very limited and tight parking directly outside the restaurant Food... food tastes good but they skimp out on the meat. For example, the coconut shrimp appetizer only has 5 shrimp on there. The roast beef sandwich is thinly filled. Service... this is where they lost the most stars. I felt the restaurant was both understaffed and inattentive. It saddens me to write this post about The Growers Pub, but after three times of poor food, it is time to speak out. Our recent trip with a family for a birthday party was so disappointing. Six of the 12 people all commented about their meat, not being nearly as good as it used to be. It was a busy night so I will give them that. The New York steak was tough and dry, my one friend who ordered a well done piece of prime rib was served a chunk that she couldn't even cut into. Our prime rib, as well as our friends, had a big chunk of fat, which I know you need for flavor, but for the prices, they are charging for these steaks we would like a little more meat instead of the fat. I hope there is some reason that the food has tended to go downhill lately. But this was our friends and ourselves third time coming with less than quality meat. Mashed potatoes were cold and one person's tri-tip salad was rubbery. Hoping things will change soon as most in our group are taking a break from a repeat. This is my kind of place! We are new to the area but could tell that this place has been a Salinas staple for at least two generations. Old steakhouse diner vibe with high back booths. Clientele were local businessmen and locals who want an elevated lunch or dinner. Although we weren't having cocktails, it was nice to know they have a full bar. We started with fried calamari. It was pretty good, but nothing we will order again. My wife ordered the avocado bacon cheese burger and I had the French dip. Plenty of roast beef on a French roll with very flavorful au jus. The fries were nicely seasoned and crispy. I had a bite of my wife's burger. It was a flame grilled burger, cooked to the correct temperature with fresh l/t/o and pickles. It was really tasty. Service: Ofelia was our server. She was super friendly and checked on us from time to time. This will be one of our regular stops when we move full time near this community.
