It is Thursday. Family went out of our way to stop here on our yearly trip to the coast. We all were really looking forward to great food, like every year. I really like the food, the beer and the space. The service can be spotty and sometimes the live music in the dining area can be overwhelming in the evenings. Definitely a place I suggest when meeting friends or looking for lunch. Entrees do not include sides, so you need to order those separately. That with a beer makes it maybe $40 per person. Multiple vegetarian options. I like the veggie burger with a side of tater tots. Always good. There is a vegan option, but I like the pesto on the veggie burger. Super tasty. read more

My heart is pounding while writing this review, mostly my because I'm in shock me and my little family. On Saturday we walked into grilling and chilling, hoping for a great experience as I had a few months prior, when a family member rented out the backspace of grillin and chillin for a celebration of life. On Saturday December 14th 2024 me and my family walked in happy looking around town, searching for a good place to eat. We walked in and nobody said anything to us, which we were totally confused by. Everybody was just kind of staring at us... It felt very awkward so I finally.. after standing there for several minutes asked a server who WAS SO RUDE replied "I will be with you when I can". I wanted to walk out there and I should've because a few minutes later we sat down she threw two menus at us and there was five of two adult and three kids. After sitting there for several minutes, she didn't come back to the table at all and then kept on walking by us and then finally said oh I'll be with you in a minute finally came to the table and we were asking questions about the menu and she didn't reply with any Feedback at all in which I was shocked by because hello if you know that you have other options that will accommodate me I would think that you would say that. Fast-forward to us putting in our drink order, we wanted to put in some appetizers my partner put in jalapeño poppers to which I replied, wait can I add to that as I was talking she walked away from me like literally I was trying to order something and she walked away from me. Didn't say anything. She's like OK that's all you need like I just said I wanted to order something else and you're walking away as I'm talking. This may not seem like a big deal but to us it was so rude and and I cannot explain the feeling it was humiliation and just like wow even our kids were like mom why did she just do that? I then got up and told her not to put in the order and told her she was the rudest server I have ever met in my life and she should be ashamed. She has long really long highlighted blond hair, wears black glasses. She is so rude, didn't greet us didn't say hi didn't say oh here's your table. Just threw the menus on the table and I guess that's where we were sitting. we've lived in Hollister for years and never have had this experience. It was almost some form of racism to us. We are not white a mixed family And proud of that! Just something to take consideration when visiting this place it was the most horrible experience and I will never be back there . I didn't want to like this place, their Alehouse location f'd up steak so badly the first (and last) time I went. I got a cowboy burger with fries, and it was HUGE and delicious (and very, very messy). Fries were crispy outside, tender inside, and hot. I'd recommend this place for burgers. We LOVE their selection of beers. The atmosphere is casual, low key and the staff is super friendly. They also have vegan food and are willing to change an order around to suit dietary needs. Been frequenting this place for several years now even back when they were just a small bar only. Have hosted a few large events and mid-sized birthday parties as well. Service has always been great here. Food is usually good size portions. Lots to choose from on the menu. Good fresh beer selection on tap. Our usual go to spot whether it's just the two of us, or with more family. Very accommodating with our grandchildren too. New jukebox is cool too and they have live music a couple times a week. Although food is good, they could benefit from getting rid of some of the waiters who only want to dedicate their attention to men and not the families that go in. Our table waited over 20min to get refills to our drinks. When she would pass by, she would look the opposite direction to not be asked for refills. When she finally acknowledged our table she proceeded to say "what do you want" passively aggressive. She then proceeded to dance on the dance floor before putting our order in. Anyways they have an ok ambiance, and great bands that do play once in a while. This place is more like hooters, dedicated to thirsty men not for families. The only reason I am giving this place any stars is because our waitress was very nice! Other than that, everything else was disappointing. The first time I ate here I thought everything was great. From the food to the service, everything was satisfactory. I thought it was so good that I brought my sisters here to try it. When my sisters and I got there, there were about 8 other people dining in. After getting a table, we waited for about 10 minutes to finally be asked what we wanted to drink. (By the way, their sweet tea is really good) For appetizers, we ordered garlic fries, wings with the bomb sauce (sweet &spicy), & chips, guacamole, & salsa. For our main dishes, we ordered the loco moco, fish & chips, & the bourbon bacon burger. All the food took a while for it to come out. The garlic fries were obviously not fresh because they were barely even hot, you couldn't really taste the garlic, and it actually tasted like the fries were made earlier in the day. The wings looked good but were very bitter. They tasted like they used too much soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce, way too much! I'd say the only appetizer I actually enjoyed was the chips & guacamole. On the menu, the loco moco says it comes with two patties but my sister and I both only got 1 patty that was very tough but a little pink inside. The rice was very mushy and was more like chowder with the amount of gravy they put in the bowl. Now I love extra gravy but again, it was like a bowl of loco moco chowder. My sister that ordered the fish & chips substituted the fries for rice. She said the fish was good but like ours, her rice was very mushy. My sister that ordered the bourbon bacon burger said that her burger patty was very tough. All in all, the only things we enjoyed here was the sweet tea & the chips & guacamole. Maybe they were having an off day when we went but my sisters and I were very disappointed. I do want to give a shout-out to our waitress, Izzy. I think it was Notion Brewing Co and it was called Raspberry Pusher. Omg it was soooo good!! Service was great and very friendly. I split a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich with fries and honestly, I didn't expect much but it was cooked perfectly and the fries were crisped just right. The new owner was working the floor and was very friendly, stopping at tables to see how everything was. The menu seems pretty much the same as before, and our food was delicious. She didn't even look up to say "I'll be right with you" or "Hello". After a minute of standing there I asked her if it was self seating or we needed to wait? Her response was "No! You are going to have to wait and right now we have a table of 9 waiting so you're looking at 30 mins!" So I said "ok that's fine" her response was "You want to wait?" Ummmmm well yes!!! Smh My husband was furious as he witnessed everything. So we loaded our babies back up in the car and drove to SJB to have dinner at Jardines. On the way to SJB I decided to call so I can let the manager know how unprofessional the staff is there only to find out that the woman at the front and who also answered the phone when I called was Nicki! She said "Unfortunately, the person who you spoke to when you came in was me! And I am the manager. I am so sorry that you had a bad experience today. But maybe you can come back on a day when we're not that busy and we can give you better service." Then HUNG UP!! A few things for restaurant businesses to be aware of: 1. Have staff & MANAGEMENT that love what they do 2. Multitasking is a must have skill. So if you can't put an order in and greet a patient you should not be working there 3. Customer service is everything 4. A table of 9 WAITING is not anything to ruffle your feathers. We are visiting Hollister for a wedding and we went out for dinner here. The menu is insane! They have everything you can think of and even stuff that you haven't thought of! We had their cowboy queso and it was delicious!!! I was in a group of 4 for dinner and the food portions were so big we all only ate about half of what we ordered. Our waitress was very nice and checked in on us often! We were all a little tired from the drive, otherwise we probably would have played some of the corn hole or giant connect 4 that they have there. The ambiance is very family friendly and relaxing! If we ever find ourselves back in Hollister, I'm sure we will be back! Definitely recommend! read more
