It was perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and the sauce was so good I wanted to soak up every last drop. They served it bone-in and de-boned it table-side, which I loved. My husband had the whole fried dorade and couldn't stop talking about how good it was. We finished with the pot de crème, which was everything you want in a dessert - rich, silky, and absolutely delicious. The tuna tartare and the mussel curry were both inspired dishes; the mussels in the sauce had great flavor, though the portion sizes overall felt small. The blistered snap peas with preserved lemon were also delicious. That said, for a place with "oyster" in the name, we expected a wider or higher-quality selection, perhaps including some from Canada, rather than the fairly standard options from CT and MA. Unfortunately, the main dishes missed the mark for us and didn't offer enough food. The sea bass was overcooked. the accompanying lima beans weren't cooked all the way through, and the dish lacked depth of flavor. The shrimp main also fell short, with the shrimp having a very odd, mushy bland flavor. To finish, the pot de crème had so much cream and so little actual chocolate that there was almost no chocolate flavor. On a separate note, navigating the QR code menu was pretty obnoxious. Restaurants should really just offer traditional paper menus; people stare at screens all day and come out to engage with each other, not look at a phone again, and constantly have it on the table. While I appreciate Fair Haven Oyster's creative concepts, their tinned fish with pickled sides, and their great starters, the execution on the mains and the portion sizes left something to be desired, especially at these price points. This was probably our sixth time going to Fairhaven Oyster. We've been going over the past few years and my overall takeaway is that I will definitely return for the drinks, the great atmosphere, and some appetizers, but will not be ordering mains.

The indoor seating features massive windows overlooking the port and ocean, and they have great outdoor seating options as well. The staff was super friendly, attentive, and completely on the ball, accommodating everyone's requests with a smile. The service was top-notch, the drinks were excellent, and the views were stunning. Cozy and delicious. That's what I'd describe about Hachiroku. The ambiance is cozy regardless if you're sitting at the bar or in the upstairs seating. The food we ordered also had the same vibe. The menu rotates with the seasons and the freshest ingredients which we greatly appreciated and it shows in the tastes. Our seasonal selections that we ordered included Hokkaido scallop and octopus carpaccio with ikura and seaweed and monkfish karaage. The carpaccio had the perfect components to complement each other. The monkfish karaage fully came together between the lemon and the side of pickled radish as well. We also ordered house made fresh tofu and added uni. The staff mentioned "oh it's perfect, it's uni season" which made my day. It was so delicious and my husband who normally doesn't like uni even noticed how fresh it was. We really went wild ordering everything, including the mini Harasu don (teishoku which comes with rice, pickles, and we picked the salad), Black Cod grilled with Yuzu sauce, Yaki Kinoko Mushrooms, and the Kakuni Short Rib (which pairs very well with a side of rice). The most cozy and perfect dish for winter was the seasonal vegetable agedashi. Warm and had a nice variety of vegetables with a vegetable dashi broth that healed the soul. We enjoyed every dish and we noticed already when looking at the menu again there's already so many new items to try. There is a small transition space from the outside, and then you enter into a dimly lit room with an L-shaped bar on the left side of a minimalistic open space. Very atmospheric. They have paper menus, and you check the boxes of what you want. I didn't count the spaces, but I doubt that more than 15 people could eat at a time, and I only saw two employees the entire time I was there. This is obviously meant to be an intimate experience. And it takes time. I wasn't there for a full meal because I had an event. But I'm rarely in New Haven in the evening and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to visit. I ordered two pieces of pressed salmon sushi with with salmon roe, a snow crab and salmon roe handroll, and a handroll with mackerel and ginger.
