Unless they snuck one in on me, there are 3 Hachiroku businesses in New Haven. The Loop. Harchiroku Shokudo and Sake. And Hachiroku Handroll Bar. With my recent visit to the Handroll Bar, I've hit my Trifecta, and I can say that all three businesses are standard setters in what they do. I have had handrolls, but I've never been to a "Handroll Bar". As with Shokudo, the outside of the Hand Roll Bar is understated, and you have to search a bit for the entry. There is a small transition space from the outside, and then you enter into a dimly lit room with an L-shaped bar on the left side of a minimalistic open space. Very atmospheric. They have paper menus, and you check the boxes of what you want. I didn't count the spaces, but I doubt that more than 15 people could eat at a time, and I only saw two employees the entire time I was there. This is obviously meant to be an intimate experience. And it takes time. I wasn't there for a full meal because I had an event. But I'm rarely in New Haven in the evening and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to visit. I ordered two pieces of pressed salmon sushi with with salmon roe, a snow crab and salmon roe handroll, and a handroll with mackerel and ginger. If you don't know, a handroll is sort of a rustic, uncut, nori wrapped sushi roll. These arrived in Nori shaped cones that you have to hold to keep together. All of the food was elegantly presented, very well executed, had fantastic texture and tasted great. I look forward to returning when I have more time. 5 Stars read more

First - note that their signage is VERY "discreet" and very hard to find. I think their sign is in 7 point font.....We circled State Street over 4 times before other family members (who we were meeting) found it and described to us exactly where they are located. Second - note that there is a public parking lot a few doors past their restaurant (if street parking is not available). Once inside, the ambiance is "cozy" with counter seating for about 12 and a table with about 5-6 seats. There were 3 men working behind the counter. Price is average $100 per person and allow time for dining. Everything is fresh and made right in front of you. The Black Cod, while pricey, was the best item on the menu. Their sushi is fresh and tasty. Food is excellent once you find this restaurant...lol. Best to do your "recon" to know where they are, before driving there at night. read more

I was finally able to try the Handroll Sushi Bar by Hachiroku on State St., and it did not disappoint. The exterior is very unassuming and easily overlooked with a lack of a prominent sign. Inside, the minimalist and cozy space boasts a clean aesthetic with a sushi bar as the focal point, surrounded by stools. They are strictly counter service, with no traditional table service or servers. It is definitely a spot ideal for solo diners, extravagant dates, or small groups of working professionals. Sushi chef Gen and his colleague were courteous and task-focused. Based on my experience, I wouldn't come here on an empty stomach unless you're willing to splurge, and I also wouldn't come here if you're looking for a lively atmosphere with music. If you're just looking for a light but high end culinary experience however, then this is the spot for you. Everything from the melt-in-your-mouth Toro and buttery Wagyu to the handrolls and dessert was exceptional. While their handrolls might be less filling than the average local offerings (but standard for high-end sushi establishments), the superior quality of ingredients and rice more than compensates. I didn't have a chance to explore their drink menu, but the displayed selection of high-quality sake is promising. I'd love to see them expand their operating hours (a late-night premium sushi bar would be amazing!), but I understand their decision given the location and clientele. Perhaps their current hours better suit their personal or business needs as well. I do wish they were located in a more vibrant, easily accessible neighborhood or town with better parking, which would likely attract a wider clientele. Nonetheless, I hope this hidden gem continues to thrive, and I'm looking forward to revisiting them again in the future! read more

I had an amazing time here! We walked in without a reservation and they accommodated us even though they were really busy with a big party of people. That's to show how nice the staff were. I think something that stood out to me was the staff. Our chef made our experience so much more memorable. He was personable and so great. He would recommend things based off our selection and indeed his recommendations were better than what we originally had picked. We tried quite a lot of food there and amazing drinks. The place is a cozy spot in new haven that I had in mind to try for a while. Once we were leaving, we heard our chef say "see you again" and he was right, I will be going back here again! read more

Hands (roll) down best sushi ever!!! Super nice owners who made my 11-year-old son feel very welcome. They also were very helpful explaining the edible garnishes not familiar to us. Also a great selection of different types of sake. The food was presented beautifully and served at a very nice pace. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the dish preparations sitting around the bar and chatting with our fellow diners. We can't wait to bring my husband on our next visit, which can't be too soon! read more

This is a tiny place with counter/bar seating. Minimalist space with an NYC vibe. The staff was super welcoming and almost everything was gluten free (they use tamari). I love Hachiroku's new hand roll bar. I've been to their other place on Orange St many a time. Food is amazing as usual. When I went May 2023, the menu is composed of two sections. One section has handrolls (e.g., fatty tuna, yellowtail, uni and ikura, scallops) and the other side with small tapas (similar to the menu at their other location e.g., jako salad, cod, anchovy potato salad, etc). I especially enjoyed the yellowtail and Hokkaido scallop handrolls! Would 10/10 recommend. They have a less extensive sake and whiskey menu as their other location but definitely still big enough to find something you like. Recommend the unfiltered ginjo Snow White. The ambiance is impeccable, very minimalist, very chic. (Did I mention there's a bidet in the bathroom? Nice touch.) Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time! There's only about 15ish seats at the sushi bar (eat your handrolls fresh!) so walk-in may be difficult. read more

Best Hand rolls in CT and one of the best I've had maybe ever. Nigiri was delicious. We ordered some of the cold and warm apps. Next time - I'd order more sushi/hand rolls and skip the apps (even though they were delicious as well). Great service read more

This is just a great place - albeit a bit pricy. The sushi is exceptional and innovative. The handrolls that typify the approach to sushi are unlike anything that one typically gets. The staff is very engaging and perform almost a ballet in getting the dishes created. In some ways it's minimalistic in that only two people manage the whole thing. And don't ignore the desserts - had a macha kiwi sauce that was mind blowing delicious and different. Despite the price, definitely worth it! The place itself is very intimate which adds to the experience. read more
