I was finally able to try the Handroll Sushi Bar by Hachiroku on State St., and it did not disappoint. The exterior is very unassuming and easily overlooked with a lack of a prominent sign. Inside, the minimalist and cozy space boasts a clean aesthetic with a sushi bar as the focal point, surrounded by stools. They are strictly counter service, with no traditional table service or servers. It is definitely a spot ideal for solo diners, extravagant dates, or small groups of working professionals. Sushi chef Gen and his colleague were courteous and task-focused. Based on my experience, I wouldn't come here on an empty stomach unless you're willing to splurge, and I also wouldn't come here if you're looking for a lively atmosphere with music. If you're just looking for a light but high end culinary experience however, then this is the spot for you. Everything from the melt-in-your-mouth Toro and buttery Wagyu to the handrolls and dessert was exceptional. While their handrolls might be less filling than the average local offerings (but standard for high-end sushi establishments), the superior quality of ingredients and rice more than compensates. I didn't have a chance to explore their drink menu, but the displayed selection of high-quality sake is promising. I'd love to see them expand their operating hours (a late-night premium sushi bar would be amazing!), but I understand their decision given the location and clientele. Perhaps their current hours better suit their personal or business needs as well. I do wish they were located in a more vibrant, easily accessible neighborhood or town with better parking, which would likely attract a wider clientele. Nonetheless, I hope this hidden gem continues to thrive, and I'm looking forward to revisiting them again in the future!

I had an amazing time here! We walked in without a reservation and they accommodated us even though they were really busy with a big party of people. That's to show how nice the staff were. I think something that stood out to me was the staff. Our chef made our experience so much more memorable. He was personable and so great. He would recommend things based off our selection and indeed his recommendations were better than what we originally had picked. We tried quite a lot of food there and amazing drinks. The place is a cozy spot in new haven that I had in mind to try for a while. Once we were leaving, we heard our chef say "see you again" and he was right, I will be going back here again!

Ugh I can't say enough great things about this place! I've been here countless times since they opened - the food, ambiance, as well as the drinks, have been just excellent. Chef Gen knows what he is doing and time after time we have also become a fan of his attitude towards food. Better than most omakase I've been to. Certainly a gem in New Haven Connecticut! Highly recommend.

Hands (roll) down best sushi ever!!! Super nice owners who made my 11-year-old son feel very welcome. They also were very helpful explaining the edible garnishes not familiar to us. Also a great selection of different types of sake. The food was presented beautifully and served at a very nice pace. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the dish preparations sitting around the bar and chatting with our fellow diners. We can't wait to bring my husband on our next visit, which can't be too soon!

I love Hachiroku's new hand roll bar. I've been to their other place on Orange St many a time. Food is amazing as usual. When I went May 2023, the menu is composed of two sections. One section has handrolls (e.g., fatty tuna, yellowtail, uni and ikura, scallops) and the other side with small tapas (similar to the menu at their other location e.g., jako salad, cod, anchovy potato salad, etc). I especially enjoyed the yellowtail and Hokkaido scallop handrolls! Would 10/10 recommend. They have a less extensive sake and whiskey menu as their other location but definitely still big enough to find something you like. Recommend the unfiltered ginjo Snow White. The ambiance is impeccable, very minimalist, very chic. (Did I mention there's a bidet in the bathroom? Nice touch.) Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time! There's only about 15ish seats at the sushi bar (eat your handrolls fresh!) so walk-in may be difficult.

In a display of restaurant solidarity , they recommended that we try Vinas Wine & Tapas. As it turned out, we have a NEW favorite in New Haven! We arrived a bit early and were cheerfully greeted by Mike G, our server. The atmosphere was welcoming and relatively quiet, since their musical offering does not start as early as our 5:00-7:00 PM time slot on a Tuesday. We had asked for the waiter Christian because he had been mentioned in several of the Yelp reviews, but Mike proved that the service compliments should go to everyone. First, the tapas: We enjoyed all five of the tapas we chose. The "Calamares" were lightly battered and crispy. The Vinas salad was fresh, with tomatoes, cheese, corn, and croutons. The pork belly was delicious and more meaty than expected . The oyster mushrooms were presented with onion crisps. The baked birria empanada was stuffed with brisket style beef. Each of these "courses" was a unique delight to the palate, and for me and my partner, it was completely satisfying. In keeping with the spirit of a "wine bar," Vinas offered a flight of 4 wines in 3 ounce glasses, and after hearing about our food choices and wine preferences, Mike chose the wines for us, giving us a chance to taste some less familiar offerings. We had the Felino Malbec 2024 (Argentina), which became our favorite for its full-bodied and deep flavor. Our second wine was a unique Don Abel (private label) from Wallingford CT, made by one of the relatives of the owner, specially for Vinas. This one reminded us of the local wines one might receive in a B&B in the Loire Valley in France. The final two wines were both from Chile: Reserva Carmenere 2023 and Cabernet Sauvignon Marques de Casa Concha 2022. Both were excellent wines. It was great fun to have Mike choose the wines for us, and we really enjoyed the variety that the flight offerings gave to us. Of course, we had to try a dessert, and Mike recommended the Toffee Cake. We had heard that the owner claimed that some people cried with joy after eating it. Although we restrained ourselves, we had to agree that this was an extraordinary conclusion to a fabulous meal. Overall, this was a great experience for us, and we heartily recommend Vinas Wine Bar and Tapas for a relaxing and welcoming dinner. Some reviews I had read suggested that the portions were too small for the price. I have to disagree. My partner and I love food, and this was plenty. And the price was reasonable. Including tip and tax, we spent about $75 each.

The ceviche was excellent, everything was cooked throughout by the citrus. The portion size is small for $19 and it could have used a side of bread or tortillas to soak up the delicious citrus based broth. The skewers were also excellent. They were cooked perfectly, super tender, juicy and flavorful. They cooked them with a seasoning and had a delicious chimi on top.

Service is always fantastic and attentive. The dining section is small so I highly recommend reservations! The downstairs is the main bar area with a few high tops. I have also never been to a sake bar. Have to say....I was underwhelmed. We came in last Friday and apparently it was slow because Yale was off (according to our waiter). If a restaurant is good they should not be slow on a Friday night. We sat by the door on a cold night and there were two other couples practically on top of us. Rest of the seating are high tops against a wall by the bar or up the stairs on another level. We would have liked to sit upstairs but they were closing off that area. Menu was complex as the restaurant is authentic Japanese. Lots of beef options. Lots of Wagyu. I was hoping to be blown away by this restaurant trying something different. I was struggling trying to find something to order that sounded appetizing. I knew going in that this place was authentic Japanese but I don't know, nothing sounded great to me. I love mushrooms so I got the Mixed Kinoko Mushroom appetizer which was $15. To add scallops was another $8. Mushrooms were tasty. Scallops were not. $23 for a small dish. I also got the pork short ribs. Not a ton of meat on them, however, nice flavor. I was still hungry after this so I ordered a dessert which was the best part of the meal. They get some of their desserts from Hen & Heifer which is a well established place in Guilford. I got the Ube Panna cotta. Boyfriend got the Black cod Yu-an Yaki and upgraded to add the salad, pickles and rice for $3 more. The pickles were maybe two bites. Salad tasty but again, very small. He said the cod was just ok too. Very small portions and pricey for what you get. $30 for a mini sake flight. Not impressed with how it was served either. Small tasting glasses just placed on the table with no description. The server explained which was which, but I didn't remember. Not sure if he didn't care or this is how it's normally served, but if you go to a wine bar/brewery, they provide descriptions with flights usually written underneath the glass, or at least serve it in something. Not just tiny glasses placed on a table where you have no idea what you're having. Especially for $30! I was not impressed with this place whatsoever. As this is part of a newer restaurant group with a few different locations nearby in New Haven, we then went to their cocktail Lounge on crown street (116 Cocktail Bar) thinking it might be better, however we were equally disappointed. It was dead in there and the bartenders were miserable. They couldn't wait to get out of there. I have heard that their hand roll bar is very good (Handroll on State St). We have been to their Grocery Store called The Loop and it's cute. They have a brunch at the Grocery/Kitchen location that looks really good. They also have a wine lounge at The Loop that I'd like to try.
