I set my alarm for early on Sunday (10am is early for me) and made the 35 minute trek across town and ventured onto roads that I didn't know existed. I arrived at New Town at Harmony subdivision - a new planned community that I immediately fell in love with. Alchemy House shares a small building with the management company for the property and has limited seating inside but a nice courtyard where you could sit and watch the residents in their golf carts heading to the fitness center, postal building or walking their dogs to the nearby canal, lake or Blue Creek trails. A truly idyllic small town feeling amongst beautiful small homes. As soon as I stepped foot inside I was greeted by the owner Jonathan, and given the lowdown on the business, community, and coffee industry- a great host that told me he is an engineer by profession, but I'm pretty sure that he has a PhD in customer service! I ordered one of their signature drinks - The Philosopher's Stone; an espresso latte beverage with vanilla, cinnamon and honey. Perfect. One thing I really appreciated is that both their 12 oz and 16 oz drinks come with two shots of espresso, which is a nice bonus. They also have some really unique flavor combinations. I ordered the hot Blackberry Buckle Latte and added white chocolate mocha. I'd never had a blackberry coffee before, and it was surprisingly delicious. It wasn't overly sweet or syrupy. Instead, it had a more balanced, almost savory flavor. You could actually taste the blackberry without it overpowering the coffee, making for a really unique and enjoyable drink. The only downside is that the inside is pretty small. If they're busy, it can feel crowded with customers waiting and ordering since there's not much room to move around. However, they do have outdoor seating with four tables (three shaded by umbrellas) and about six additional individual chairs, making it a nice option to enjoy your coffee outside. Overall, if you're looking for creative coffee flavors, quality espresso, and friendly service, Hi Hat Coffee is definitely worth checking out. I remember back in 2011 when I worked at the Nelson we were absolutely starved for a great local coffee house to open up nearby. We had Latte Land on the plaza but parking over there was always nuts and to just pop in and grab a coffee we'd often end up over at KCAI. When Crow's opened while I was away in graduate school I remember my former colleagues gushing about it - saying it had finally happened and a good shop had opened. They weren't wrong. Here we are, probably 10 years (ish) since they first opened their doors and they are still serving the need for fantastic local coffee in this part of KC. On my most recent visit I popped in for a coffee to take with me to a meet at UMKC and I was reminded at how great this spot is. While there are many more great coffee options nearby these days you can't fail to remember Crows and I look forward to my next visit!

Even with the crowd it was not noisy at all and I was able to settle in and get plenty of work done. I ordered an iced oat milk latte with an extra shot of espresso and it was delicious. The coffee flavor really came through and was perfectly prepared. The staff was also very friendly and helpful which made the experience even better. I will definitely be back.
