In four days, the United States of America will celebrate what is technically called its Semiquincentennial, which is the word for a 250th anniversary, and which I had to look up, and which I then tried to say out loud in my car on the way here, three times, and failed each one. This is the irony the Founding Fathers, who were unusually articulate men, could not have anticipated: that the country they built on clear plain speech would arrive at its 250th birthday with a name for itself that sounds like a medical procedure. The brewery has posted a banner on their website that says "Come celebrate the 250th birthday of AMERICA with us!" which is a more honest description of the situation, and which I appreciated. 13 Stripes is a Revolutionary War brewery at Taylors Mill, built by people who are genuinely, non-ironically in love with the period, and it shows completely and without apology. Every beer is named for something from the war. The lager is called Not My King, which started as a jab at Budweiser and turned out to be historically accurate. It is not, however, a protest against a certain self-appointed king who resides (and is in the process of dismantling) the White House. The Hazy Double IPA is called Freedom Juice, at 8%, which is also historically accurate, in that freedom, when it finally arrives, tends to hit harder than you expected. I ordered the William Penn, a Quaker Oatmeal Coffee Stout at 5.5%, on the principle that the only man who founded both a colony and a religious movement deserves to be a stout, and he did. I then ordered the Townsend, an English Style Pub Ale on nitro named after Robert Townsend, one of Washington's spies, who conducted his intelligence work in relative silence, which is appropriate for a 4.1% beer you drink quietly while everyone else is ordering Freedom Juice. The food is from Defiance BBQ, which is not a casual name for a friendly food truck. The brisket sandwich is available Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays while supplies last, which is the kind of scarcity notice that makes people arrive earlier than they intended. The coleslaw comes with a note on the menu that reads "the slaw is the law," which I considered briefly as a reference to Judge Dredd and then accepted, because there are some sentences that resolve themselves. The fries are cooked in beef tallow, a detail the 18th century would have found unremarkable and the 21st century has turned into a whole conversation. They were very good, and I did not start the conversation. On July 4, 2026, the United States will be 250 years old, built in part right here, in South Carolina, where more Revolutionary War battles were fought than in any other state, which is a fact that most people driving past Taylors Mill do not know and would probably find surprising if someone told them in line at the bar. I finally partook in the Nathan Hale, an American Pale Ale at 5%. Nathan Hale, as you may recall, had only one regret. I had none. read more

Awesome brewery with a large variety of beers on tap! I stopped by this brewery on a Friday night and I enjoyed the experience. I was impressed with the large selection of lagers, dark/malt beers, and IPAs. I liked the option of getting 10oz or 20oz. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and provided quick service. I did not try the food but everything coming out of the kitchen looked good. The to-go beer was reasonably priced and there was a large selection. The beer here is 10/10. I am personally an IPA enthusiast and they have several IPAs which are all delicious. They have lots of light beer and non-beer options as well, like seltzers, ciders, wine, etc. My husband enjoyed the watermelon seltzer on tap. There is a food truck outside that serves excellent food and you can order either inside the brewery with a brewery cashier or directly at the food truck. We got birria tacos and classic smash burger and both were very good - I would even say it's one of the best smash burgers in the area. Everyone at the brewery and the food truck were super nice and friendly. The reason why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because 1. Unfortunately there is no AC at this place. I understand it's a converted mill, and they have giant fans to cool you off, but on a hot day in summer it's still pretty brutal. Personally I will sweat for good beer but it does get uncomfortable. 2. It was packed in there when we arrived due to some corporate event, and it was very very loud inside. Because of the metal walls and high ceilings and such, the sound travels everywhere and echoes, so with a lot of people inside, it was super loud and I had to almost yell at my husband who is sitting right next to me to have a conversation and the bartender had to be right by our faces to be able to hear our order. I would say this is a great place to hang on maybe not a super hot day and would highly recommend the beer and the food. read more

Only came here for a four pack while throwing axes at the nearby Axe throwing room. I can't rate 13 Stripes simply off of that so I'll share a funny story about it. The attendant at the Axe throwing encouraged my friend and I to feel free and grab beers and bring them so we could enjoy while throwing axes. I thought that would be cool, but figured why don't we warm up throwing first. Then another party of about four people come in with their beers - in glasses. I think "cool, they have the right idea." So I run across the lot and get the 4 pack of Light & Glory Ale. The bartender stops me with, oh glasses can't be taken out of the brewery past the outdoor seating area. I tell him there was a group that just did that. He paused for a second and said "yeeeeeah......they weren't supposed to do that." It's likely they snuck over there. The bartender was really cool. Let me sample a few beers and told me if I didn't want to take all the beers, I could leave the other two and pick them up when I was ready to leave. I did this and came back a few hours later and he handed the other two I purchased no problem. So, how's the beer? Oh, it's great! You should try some! read more

Serious industrial vibe here in this taproom that was once a factory floor. The place is neighbors with a restaurant and across the way is an arcade and a hatchet throwing place. They have a patio outside and that looked super comfortable. But I needed electricity today for the laptop and found it inside, enjoying a small pint of their "Kovats Vienna Lager." Tasty stuff and when I had finished that one, I returned for another but they were out. Serious bummer, but that's a good sign because it means the beer is fresh. Definitely a well hidden brewery in the middle of Taylors. You drive on this narrow road, go past some old mills, consider if you are even on the right road or if GPS really screwed up. And then voila! 13 Stripes Brewery pops up. This brewery has a charming historic feel to it. Also provides a spacious place to enjoy beer and good music. Their beers are so unique. They don't do flights but will let you sample as many as you want before deciding. I got the peach Tripel and it was delicious and a whopping 8-9% ABV. What a great place. We were headed to the airport for an 8:50 pm flight so we had the entire day to chill. We opted for a brewery toward the airport. Lyft didn't even know this place was there. Once inside (huge open space) we sat at the bar. We sampled (no flights just 10 oz pours) the IPA's and the stouts/nitros. All good. Staff were friendly. It was brew day so we were able to watch them do that. Clean and bathrooms are great. Wonderful place and we would return time and time again. Definitely go here! read more

DO NOT GO HERE FOR TRIVIA NIGHT! The emcee has the false idea that he is funny. They change the rules during the game. The music rounds are not played in a format conducive to allow for those participating to hear. It is probably due to the high/vaulted ceilings creating an echo. The big no-no was the changing of the rules. In the beginning, they announced the team in next to last place gets free beer. They had 3 teams tied with zero points at the end and 3 teams tied with 1 point at the end. They CLAIMED the zero point teams were not in last place. They didn't count. Thus the 3 teams with 1 point were actually in last place and thus not eligible to win the free beer. Obviously they didn't want to give free beer to 3 teams. This place is pretty amazing. An old textile mill, refurbished to become a wonderful brew bar. Raw industrial theme, wooden kegs galore, but comfy couches and easy chairs, picnic tables, a piano and more to make it softer. The servers are fun and friendly. The brews are outstanding...rich, unique, most enjoyable. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was the noise level...so loud we couldn't carry on a reasonable conversation.There is an outdoor deck with more picnic tables so you could escape the din if the weather is good. There is limited parking in the adjacent parking lot and much more directly across the street so no issues with parking. Let's get to the point, the beer is so good! If you like super balanced brews, these lagers, porters, IPAs, wheats, and other collabs will leave you so satisfied. The ambiance is Americana meets rustic home. The copper accents, couches, picnic tables, and art are just what's needed to hang out with some friends and relax. The location is great at Taylor's Mill especially on "First Fridays" which is when all the artist studios are open to browse in the building behind the brewery. They offer some great looking food and food trucks also stop by for big event nights. The head brewmaster was very informative when I asked about ingredients which I appreciated. So glad to have this welcome addition to the Taylors' neighborhood! Came here tonight after dinner in TR. Great atmosphere and several good beers on tap. The place is spacious and inviting, with a very festive vibe. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. They also have plenty of parking right across the street if the main parking lot is full (which was the case tonight). My wife and another female in our group had two minor complaints: first, they thought it was just a bit loud, and second, they didn't enjoy the hint of cigar smoke that wafted in occasionally from a patron sitting on the deck. Fantastic brewery that has a ton of options on tap no matter when you're there. I'm an IPA guy so I had a couple of theirs and was pleased by both. Great beers! Had two that were great. First was called Psalm of Citrus but can't remember the name of the second one. Bartender was very friendly and the place seemed to have a nice vibe. So why not five stars?? No A/C.... No A/C in South Carolina? In the summertime? Are you kidding me?? I realize that putting A/C in a place like this must cost a good deal of $$ but I'm hoping that the owners will eventually see this as a necessity and save up to make it a reality. So much fun the first night we went back again. Even on a Sunday night the place was really busy with lots of happy people. They have live music from time to time. Families are welcome here. My friends and I came here and Due South for some eclipse watching and board games. We ended up having a great time thanks to the duo. The beers were DELICIOUS. I had their wheat beer and the milk stout, plus my friend bought the table a cheese and meat plate. Great addition to the burgeoning greater-Greenville beer scene. We sampled our way through 4 of that day's beers, and found them all flavorful while being easily drinkable. I am not a hop-head, and do not understand the trend towards hoppy IPAs and the like. Of the beers I tried, 13 Stripes successfully navigates the balance of full bodied while remaining smooth drinking. If you are a fan of mill architecture, definitely bring your camera when you visit and wander the area. Went to the grand opening and it was outstanding. The venue has a ton of style and they handled the crowds flawlessly. The reason for the three is that the beer was decent, but really nothing special. With all of the active craft brewers in the area and the incredible network of distribution across the US, it is getting much harder to stand out in the brewing world. Ten years ago this beer would have been way ahead of the pack, but the bar has been raised significantly in the last few years. I wish these guys all the luck. You can tell they love beer and have a great location and concept. They have stepped into an extremely competitive market.
