I've been taking my dog Louie here for several years. He's 10 years old and was recently diagnosed…read morewith early-stage kidney disease. Dr. LeMay has been exceptional throughout the entire process. He always takes the time to clearly explain all of my options and offers thoughtful, honest recommendations. Even when discussing products or treatments they offer, I never feel pressured--he's mindful of affordability and helps me choose what truly makes sense for Louie. I never feel pushed toward non-essential items, which I really appreciate. I feel confident that Louie is receiving compassionate, trustworthy care.

Basic labs were drawn, revealing a high T4 level, and so Dr. Alizaine recommended starting methimazole for hyperthyroidism. When I asked about if it could be falsely high because of her illness or if it's possible the sample wasn't handled properly (since warm samples can cause elevated T4 in bloodwork) Dr. Alizaine brushed me off completely. I asked about re-testing when she was less acutely ill and he essentially told me that to wait longer to treat was to want my cat to get sicker and sicker. And so we started treatment. A week later on a Thursday we brought kitty back in because her food intake had gone down (but still eating half her normal) and asked for more bloodwork. He said no, it's the UTI and she got bloodwork last week, sent us home. Saturday morning I wake up and kitty is YELLOW. Rushed her to the emergency vet to find her AST/ALT (liver values) are so high they can't even quantify them. A feeding tube for a month, many tears, antibiotics, and repeated inpatient hospital stays later, I'm out $17,000 and armed with the knowledge that methimazole can cause these liver damage and failure in 1-2% of cats, not that Dr. Alizaine ever mentioned this. I was quiet at this point. Medication adverse effects are a risk we have to take to treat disease. However, the last couple months we have been looking to radioactive iodine therapy for kitty's hyperthyroidism. We took her off the methimazole for labs as instructed and surprise, surprise - two entire months after being off the meds, and kitty's thyroid levels are perfect. The thyroid experts say it was probably a one-off value, maybe a lab error or a swapped sample, but not something we'll ever know. Regardless, kitty does NOT have hyperthyroidism, and good amount of my heartache and pain from last year could have been avoided or improved if Dr. Alizaine had just ordered repeat bloodwork or listened to our concerns before kitty went jaundiced. Overall, Dr. Alizaine genuinely seems to care for your pet and their health. But he does not listen to reasonable requests from the pet parents and bulldozes them into following his treatment plan without making sure it's right. Thankfully I've moved at this point, but it's safe to say I would not recommend Dr. Alizaine as a vet to anyone.

South Boston Animal Hospital - Our fabulous staff!

    South Boston

Knowing I was getting a new puppy, I researched vets in Boston and Cambridge to find the "Right…read moreOne" in advance. At that time, South Boston Animal Hospital (now Banfield) was located on East Broadway in South Boston... a bit of a drive from Cambridge. Upon meeting veterinarian Natalie Waggoner, I knew she was our new vet. A few years ago the location changed to 9 West Broadway, a great place as it's right across from the T, has street parking, and a place to walk your pup nearby. Dr. Waggoner has cared for my coton de tulear for 9 1/2 years now. Molly started out as such a finicky eater that I worried. I think most vets would give a list of food recommendations... Dr Waggoner suggested foods I could purchase, gave me a home recipe if I wanted to cook, but so importantly... gave me tips on reverse psychology to make Molly eager to eat. She called periodically to check on Molly's eating (unbelievable to get unsolicited calls from a vet, right?). At 9 1/2, Molly is super healthy, a good eater, and (although she hates walking in the door of the clinic) loves and trusts Dr Waggoner. She has had an issue with teeth and Dr Waggoner extracted those that needed to go, and has helped us to do the best we can with little coton teeth. Something I should mention is cost. I'm guessing that the vet clinic charges average fees and now that it's owned by a chain, I imagine that the fees are standardized. The question to be asked is how many services are recommended. Dr Wagonner tells me exactly what Molly needs and I never have to guess if there are unnecessary services or charges. In the last visit I asked if Molly should have the senior dog Xrays for her system. Dr Waggonner carefully studied her chart and said that I Could if I had concerns, but she thought it was fine to wait; she felt comfortable that Molly is in good shape. Finally, let me mention the techs and staff. I think there is reasonably high turnover of personnel in some clinics. So many of the same people are there from early days. They are gentle, they know the names of pets in the community, and we consider them friends. It is to my embarrassment that I have waited over 9 years to write a review of Dr Waggoner and the South Boston (Banfield in South Boston) Animal Hospital. I hope this comprehensive review covers most questions. Susan Dietrich and her coton, Molly.

Now that Banfield is in the mix they make their employees sell, sell, sell to make money off unsuspecting pet owners. One's bad, the other's worse.
