I'm not going to lie, I am REALLY surprised that this place doesn't have more 5 star ratings. The music was 10/10, the food was 10/10 and the undisclosed entertainment was welcomed lol. If you're coming for a nice quiet meal, I definitely would skip this place. But if you're down for some super good food and drinks and some good music I would check this place out. The service was slow, but you can tell they cook the fish to order, so I didn't mind at all. Great place for some southern food. My friend and I loved it so much we tried to come back the following day to try the dressing out. Come early because they run out of some of the favorite sides closer to closing.

when I landed, I was craving turkey wings. I went to Google and I found this restaurant. I parked in front went into an awesome vibe. The ambience was amazing. There was a DJ there as soon as I walked in I got their full attention fortunately for me it was the week that they made turkey wings. Unfortunately, they weren't ready and I was jetlagged so I could not wait. Again the atmosphere was amazing if I lived in Milwaukee, this would be a spot that I frequent. When the bill came, I did not have my glasses. I gave my credit card and also gave a tip. Once I got to my hotel, I realized that there was an 18% service fee added to a takeout order on top of me leaving a $8.26 tip. Take out-oxtails-$52.31total. $32 oxtails chicken dressing and cabbage an extra $20 to take it out the door,, . The chicken dressing and cabbage was fantastic. The oxtails just taste like salt not over salty but no other seasoning just salt one note. Whenever I'm in my Milwaukee, I don't think that I can return based on takeout with 18% charged . I may never know what the turkey wings taste like but a little soy sauce and vinegar to the oxtails would've made a huge difference or paprika or pepper. If you decide to try, ask before you buy for one person service charge.

If it's cold outside, please dress warm because they keep the inside door open, and there's a lot of traffic

Well, me and my family went to 1700 pull up for "soul food Sunday" And I really wanted to like this place but There were a few issues. We arrived around 3 o'clock and they're open until six, service seems very slow after ordering our food It took at least 30 minutes before it arrived at our table. They have a very limited menu with like only three options for your main meal (4pc fried/baked chicken, 2pc Cajun fried catfish, or beef pot roast w/mashed potatoes,) and of course that's not counting sides. But they were already out of chicken, so that limited us to only two options for dinner. I had the pot roast which was OK at best. It wasn't hot nor was it cold. It was more like Luke warm. And so was my sides, which was mac & cheese and "cornbread" which is considered a side for some reason. my wife had the pot roast with greens and cornbread for her sides and my mother just had corn and like with my food theirs was also lukewarm. It was very cold in there. My wife had to sit in there with her coat and hat on the whole time, she ordered some hot cocoa to try and help her warm up because they kept the inside door open. And there was a constant flow of people in and out of the outside door which consistently let cold air in. We asked if they could close the inside door which they did for about three minutes then it was propped open again. I also did not feel like I received the value for the price we paid for our "dinners". All dinners are $30 and that includes two sides, (counting cornbread) and that's before you add the price of any drinks you may want I may try them again on another day like turkey leg Thursday, (but will only order to go) but I definitely won't be back for the so-called "soul food" Sunday

We pulled up just as the restaurant was opening for Saturday brunch and were the first and only patrons. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Nice to see the restaurant as one of several businesses along the block helping to revitalize the neighborhood. A DJ was spinning 80's and 90's tunes, clean and nicely decorated. Be sure to check the menu online or note it changes daily. Took a little longer to receive our order but as the sign says on the door "Good food, not fast food". Wife ordered catfish and grits. Decent size of catfish and well seasoned. Grits were ok. She rated her order a 7/10. I had the chicken and waffle which came with 3 chicken strips and 2 waffles. Chicken well seasoned and hot, waffles were warm and a little harder than I prefer but overall tasty. I gave my order a 7/10. Also ordered lemon drop cocktail from the all day happy hour menu for 3 bucks. Decent size, good taste and a 9/10. Wife ordered peach cobbler for dessert. Good amount of peaches but not enough crust. Wife felt it needed more nutmeg but still tasty and we give it 7/10. We were there about 90 mins and more patrons began to arrive. My only negative is when we paid our check, the restaurant adds a surcharge for dining on Saturday which should be posted or told when ordering. Hmmmm, the waiter said it's due to how busy the restaurant is on Saturdays. Overall good vibes, clean restaurant, friendly staff, good music and good food. A much needed establishment in this area of the city. I would visit again and you should give it a try.

Cat fish, greens and chicken dressing-- yes it's better than it looks. The picture doesn't do justice

I've frequented this spot quite a few times over the last year and have come to appreciate this gem for the good music, the staff, and of course the food. Go before it gets late cuz they do run out of different things later in the day. I'm all for the turkey leg day but I'm really a fan of the soul food Sundays which is the only day you can get the fried cabbage. I could go on about the food. Really have not had anything I did not like. I've brought friends and they have not been disappointed

This place has amazing food! OMG, reminds me of the good old days, hanging with my Memaw and Grandaddy! Food that relaxes the soul! We had Gumbo, Catfish, and Alfredo... Recommending anything on the menu, they do an amazing job in the kitchen! Loved it!

As soon as I walked up to the window, I was warmly greeted and asked if it was my first time there. I was offered a sample (which alone is a win), and she even asked about allergies, food sensitivities, and whether I minded my food touching..which made me laugh because my sister is that person. That level of attention really stood out. I sampled the mac and cheese, greens, and yams, and while I was eating, she took the time to walk me through menu options and current specials without rushing me at all. Once I placed my order, the great service kept going, she asked if I wanted ice in my drink, checked how much sauce I wanted on my rib tips, offered condiments, hot sauce, and made sure I had everything I needed. I usually don't tip on takeout orders, but I absolutely did this time because the hospitality and customer service were that good. The food was delicious, but the experience is what really sold it for me. It's hard to find genuinely good customer service these days, and people are quick to leave complaints but slow to give praise. So this is my shout-out. I enjoyed the food, the hospitality, and the overall experience, and I can definitely see myself coming back.

We got lucky and had bar seats open up after about 5 minutes which allowed us to grab cocktails and relax. My wife chose the 2 piece cod fry with chips while I opted for the perch fry with fries. Everything was spectacular. The bartenders were jumping around each other to keep people happy at the bar and the rest of the staff get people's bellies filled with food. I surprisingly don't have many options in my "MKE - Fish Fry" collection that are near downtown, but Swinging Door Exchange was one of them. I was pressed for time, so I placed a to go order rather than dining in. I got the combo fish fry (two pieces of cod, two pieces of perch, and three fried shrimp) with potato pancakes. I was also very easily talked into the half rack rib appetizer. The ribs were good, even though I prefer sauce that's more sweet and smokey. Their sauce was on the tangy side with a tease of spice that really only became noticeable when the majority of the half rack was gone. If I were in the mood for ribs as my main meal, I'd consider getting theirs as an entree. The two potato pancakes weren't homemade; instead, they were premade hash brown patties that some other restaurants also serve with their fish frys. These were perfectly acceptable in lieu of homemade pancakes. The cod tasted great, but the breading didn't hold up very well. Either the fish itself was too wet or the two block walk back to my car allowed for condensation to wreck it or possibly both. The perch was not yellow lake perch but probably something like pike perch. Even though both kinds of fish and the shrimp were all good sized portions, $29 feels like a lot. I wouldn't say no to it, though, if I were dining in next time and avoid the extra cost of their takeout fee. Shout-out to the bartenders working that night. The bar area was absolutely packed, but both of the ones I talked to about placing my order were friendly and helpful even with being super busy.

The colors, the well-placed low lighting, the appropriate volume of cajun music ... all done in excellent taste. The waitstaff is INCREDIBLE. They all seem to be having a great time, when it's slow, and when it's busy, which is important to see; plus, they help each other out. Waiters, bartenders, bussers, hosts, food-runners - they're often smiling and helpful to anyone. Not only did our waiter Scotty take amazing care of us (a group of 10 on a Saturday night, all arriving at different times; and he had many other tables besides us), but his teammates helped bring drinks, clear the table, and our deliver our food. Everything was timely, fresh, and as far as I know, no errors were made with drinks or food. We were all quite satisfied with our meal. The reason I give 3 stars is, for some reason I do not understand, near the end of our meal, we heard a man yelling quite loudly from the kitchen area AT OUR SERVER. The man (manager I assume) was insisting that Scotty was not attentive to us (and I can't discern a single reason why this would be claimed). Even if he noticed something we didn't -- it could have been a moment of quiet criticism, but this dude turned it into a screaming fit. And he could not have been more wrong. In fact overhearing this exchange (right around the corner, within full earshot of us and the back half of the restaurant) was the ONLY thing that soured our otherwise amazing experience. We then watched who I assume was the same guy (red-faced and angry) sit down at a table very close to us, and our server return a moment later somewhat shaken up. It was awful. We made sure to congratulate him loudly on his impeccable service after that. I don't know if the manager heard or not. But one can hope. This was not my first time here, but it was the first time I've experienced anything like this. Like I said, the team seems solid, our service is always timely and kind (and often, incredibly FUN) even when they're PACKED, the food is bangin', the oysters are fresh and delicious, and EVERYTHING is well priced & spiced! So we will be back. But we really hated seeing our waiter treated like that. For anyone who doesn't know - waiters in WI currently make $2.33/hour. This is below the federal wage rate of $7.25/hour for the same job. They survive off your tips. If they're good, they're great, and GOD BLESS THEM - they must do what they do because they love people. This manager did not seem to appreciate what he had right in front of him. But we did!!!! My husband decided on the jambalaya, I went with the crawfish étouffée, and we split the roasted Cajun cauliflower as an appetizer. While it's hard for this kind of stew-like, saucy, veggie/sausage/seafood over rice mixtures to present beautifully, everything looked, smelled, and tasted delicious. The jambalaya had a little more of a kick than I prefer, but my husband loved it and my crawfish étouffée had the perfect amount of spice without being spicy. The roasted cauliflower was cooked to perfection and was the perfect way to start the meal. Not pictured is the bananas foster bread pudding that was the perfect way to end it. We both left with extra food to take home and the memory of a wonderful meal and great experience.

Too bad you can't get a cocktail out there. The menu sounded great and we were ravenous so we were excited to order. By the time we were seated we were limited to about 40 minutes to get to a ticketed event, all in. I told that to our waitress so she could pace the meal accordingly. While I understand that she can't control the kitchen time, I don't think she showed any expediency or attention to my statement. Spoiler alert - we were late. Two of us ordered the biscuits to start with jam. I was happy to try them and they were good. My coffee based martini hit the spot, but it was spilled a little when it hit the table and our server didn't say anything or wipe it off. My mom liked her bloody Mary and it was decent. When our food came I was immediately disappointed by the appearance. My chilaquiles looked like they had sat under a heat lamp for ages - the egg was dried and over firm. My chips were spicy, but 100% soggy and nasty. My black beans were - meh. Not a good dish overall. My mom actually didn't find fault with her Honeypie Benedict. I tried the hollandaise and it was fine. My cousin did not enjoy her Hopple Popple skillet at all. (Potatoes, bacon, caramelized onion, mushroom, bell pepper, cheddar, two scrambled farm eggs) She found it difficult to find any egg, as it was apparently shrunk into tiny bits. The potatoes were like fries and it was overall bland. Not a winner. We certainly won't be back. The dishes don't live up to the interesting descriptions of them and the hype seems to be from an earlier, better time for this restaurant.
