I ate at the 1844 once but never again. It is one of those restaurants that serve adequate food but charge through the ying-yang for snob appeal. There is NOTHING in Potsdam to be snobby about and the 1844 is a caricature of a fine dining restaurant, almost a parody. The 1844 is a terrible dining value. There are restaurants within a 45 minute drive of Potsdam that serve better over-priced food in an oppressive and uncomfortable atmosphere. You don't have to settle for the 1844 and you shouldn't. read more

I go to st lawrence university and this restaurants without a doubt is the best place i have been in a long time the local produce is wonderful and is prepared at such a high quality this restaurant could be at any other place in the country and be highly successful my favorite is the rack of lamb without a doubt i have it every time and dreamabout it when i am not eating there ive never gone away from a dinner without feeling happy and full i cant wait to go there again everyone should know about this place its fantastic cudos to the owners you have done an amazing job ! read more

Best in St. Lawrence County. Can't go wrong. You'll likely need a reservation in advance. Relatively formal (for this area.) Quiet, so not tons kid friendly (depends on the kids.) Recommendation: requesting the front room, try the buffalo shrimp (a classic), the 1844 salad, and the salmon but don't be afraid to try anything. read more

The 1844 House is a nice and fancy restaurant in what looks to be an old house. From the outside it looks like an old house, but inside looks nice and a great setting for a dinner. This place is clean and the wait staff is friendly and professional.They start you off with bread and their specialty butter and a tiny appetizer that switches on a daily basis. This tiny appetizer is usually a small cracker with a cream cheese and nut on top. This is normally very good, but they give you one per person and its super tiny. If you order a salad or another appetizers you will get it next and then they give a tiny dish with a palate cleanser. The palate cleanser is good and varies by the day but so small you can eat it with one spoon scope. You then get your main meal. Come prepared to spend a lot of money for almost no food. I normally get the salmon which I recommend and is very good. One time I got the raviolis and got only 4 with a side of vegetables. Although the food is good, if your looking for a big meal with a good price tag, don't eat here. Finally you get desert if you order it. Every time I have been here, a bill averaged anywhere from $30 to $50 per person. In the past they had special multiple course meal deals for showing up before the dinner rush (ask for this, they won't tell you if you don't). I believe they still have this, but ask before you attend if you are interested. Overall this restaurant is very good and I would recommend trying it atleast once, but except a large price tag for a small amount of food. read more

We eat at 1844 fairly often but I don't leave a review every time. I just want to reiterate what a great place it is. I had the pan seared diver scallops last night with Parmesan risotto. It was amazing. Scallops were cooked to perfection and the risotto was delicious. One of my favorites is the steak and frites and the Yorkshire popovers are always a good idea. I have yet to have a meal, start to finish, that was not amazing. I would put 1844 House up against some of the best places I've eaten at through out all of my travels. Oh and the desserts are always delectable! On top of the great food, the entire staff is always the best. They always make us feel special and I see that they treat all their customers just as well. This restaurant is among the ranks of some of the most delicious dining experiences I've ever had. From start to finish, 1844 House delivered on every course and tasting. This is better than farm-to-table restaurants in NYC, even ones with Michelin stars! The staff is so pleasant and professional. Once the check arrives, it seems like they are the ones cheated out-- it's so cheap for the experience. Anyone who has experienced really good food will certainly appreciate this gem! read more

I am beside myself that it has come to the point that I am writing this review is a negative light. I have been to 1844 House upwards of 8 times within the past 2 years, and the first 4 or so were great, however the last few really, really disappointed me. I have only ever dined on business expenses, as I thought the price was too steep when I went to college in the area. So I'll start with the first 4, GREAT service. I always sat by myself with a large book to read. Young blond girl was extremely attentive, always ended up sitting in the same spot and she constantly kept an eye on my table along with the multiple other tables she had. Chicken Pot Pie was PHENOMENAL! Fifth time left a bad taste in my mouth. I was traveling back to Canton from Potsdam, and quickly snow turned into flash ice, and I needed to pull over quickly. I just so happened to be near 1844 House, I was a little under dressed, but I didn't think anything of it. I had an upscale Clarkson shirt on (most upscale I could get). I figured I could just sit at the bar and drink until the plows came. The owners were sitting at the bar, and I got the nastiest look when I came in, and I quickly decided to order a glass of wine on the spot and sit at a table. Strike 1. Not many people were at the restaurant due to the weather, and it was also the day before Thanksgiving. I was put in the back room, in a corner, while the rest of the diners were in the front room. I waited 50 minutes from the time I ordered the wine, to the time I got it, and was also waiting for a menu. I spent an additional 30 minutes from the time I got the menu to order. Strike 2. I was already upset, but whatever, I thought maybe some of the staff was late. A large ritzy family came in with a lot of little kids and was seated next to me... OF ALL PLACES in the restaurant. Once they took off their furs, the kids had free range, and were constantly pulling on my table cloth, and coming over to my table and fooling around with no parents trying to stop. The waitstaff could see I was peeved, but they didn't say anything. When I finally asked the group who was the responsible parent, I got the response, "they're just kids, what else would you expect?" within earshot of the waitresses. Strike 3. In the most conceded tones I had experienced, one of the parents said to me, "where did you get that shirt, I'd really like to get a nice one like that to eat here." Strike 872364! The last dinner at the restaurant included an "intimate" dining experience with my love. We got all dressed up per my request due to the last experience I had, and made a reservation just to be sure. We were seated in the front room with 3 other young couples, mind you, we're in our mid 20's and the other "couples" had to have been in their teens due to having to call home for a ride. It peeved me that we couldn't sit in the big kids room. We waited an over 1.5 hours for the main dishes. We got the sausage board, delicious! He ordered the short ribs and I got the chicken francaise. I assumed that a crab cake wouldn't have been mixed into the rice, and that I could have plopped it another plate, WRONG. Completely mashed into the rice. He LOVED the food. Mine was literally raw on the inside, but we were in such a rush to get to our next stop, I didn't even bother bringing it up. I wouldn't recommend going to this restaurant to someone else without first telling the story of the poor treatment I received. read more

Love, love it. The staff is wonderful and the owners are hands on. It's not unusual to find one of them behind the bar or seating guests. The food is delish and they use local products whenever possible, going so far as to have a "farmer's market" stand in the summertime outside. Definitely not something you would normally find in NNY, which is part of the appeal. They are busy every night, so they must be doing something right. Would highly recommend you have reservations, especially on the weekends. A definite must though. read more
