Finally got a chance to try 1888! I pass by this place everyday, and even on weekday mornings, around 7:30, there's already a line and customers hanging around drinking coffee. I stopped by early afternoon, on a Saturday and thankfully, it wasn't too crowded. I opted to try an iced Caramel Latte and it was sooo good! I wish I ordered the large instead! The perfect amount of sweetness as well. The owner was really nice and funny as well. The only weird situation was when I scanned my phone to pay all of a sudden one of the employees (heavy set with curly black hair) suddenly turned the register over and started pressing on the screen - without saying anything. I even asked him, "how can I tip? How can I request my receipt?". He said nothing. Huh? I had to call out for the manager, and at that point I just requested my receipt. I thought that was super strange - but oh well. Other than that, I loved the coffee, the manager was hella cool, and I can't wait to return to order breakfast the next time. 1888 is a cute little walk up coffee shop. There was a little line, and a consistent stream of people while I was there. There is very minimal seating outside, so it is more of a grab and go coffee place. I ordered a lavender latte and it was not too sweet or too strong of a syrup. I also got the egg wrap with the Kalamata olives and bell peppers. The wrap was very tasty and the perfect size for a filling breakfast. The ingredients all tasted very fresh, and the sauces that came on the side were so tasty. My only complaint about the wrap was that it was very leaky from the vegetables inside. I can't wait to come back here for more coffee and yummy food! read more

Nice new menu! I love the bacon stuffed croissant, egg sandwich, and 1888 wrap. They give you a sour cream(i think) and a herb green sauce to go with the wrap or croissant that is so delicious. I always get the Vanilla Latte. Wonderful place to support. read more

This review is solely based off the food item that I ordered. I got an egg sandwich - bacon egg and cheddar on a brioche bun. I had high hopes as I have been eyeing this place for a long while and it had good reviews but I was met with disappointment when I took my first bite. They put so much mustard!! I literally gagged when I saw this. Egg with mustard is a crime. Also they didn't put cheddar? It was some other type of cheese. Not sure was good though. I also wish that the green aioli they included on the side was more flavorful. I couldn't really taste anything when I tried it. My biggest disappointment was the mustard situation. I wish I would've known so I could've requested it without it. I will say the service was great- the girl at the register was very sweet regardless of the mid day rush. It's a bit of a different style than I've ever had. Very clean, subtle, and smooth, with a great caffeine punch. It's actually been years since I've had a proper, tasty scone. My fiancé and I tried this place last Sunday after our run around lake Merritt . We shared the ( stuffed croissant ) breakfast egg sandwich with cheddar and bacon ( no avocado) because unfortunately I am allergic to it . It was very tasty and fresh. I had an ice coffee and I am usually one that loves sugar in my coffee but I tend to usually go now for natural sugars like coconut or honey but I did not need any with this iced coffee it was very tasty and smooth. My fiancé had the same drink but hot and he loves it black , he also loved the flavor . They were a little busy on Sunday and this was around 10am . They had 3 workers one doing short orders , one coffee and one making the food. There is no chairs or tables only a small countertop . You are usually standing in line outside it there is one . I am absolutely in love with their Lavender Mocha! OMG it is delicious. I usually order a 16 oz. with Almond milk extra hot. I've also ordered the Lavender lemonade on a hot day and it was so worth it. I'm not a fan of the pastries. I've never had one, but they don't visually stimulate me enough to want to try them so there's that. I usually pay about $8 for my Mocha. Expensive, but again... it's worth it for a nice little weekend treat. There is usually a line, but it moves pretty fast so don't allow that to intimidate you. Due to the pandemic, I will be removing criteria that I had added to my reviews, such as restaurant ambience, mood, and wait time. This review will only focus on the dish. Quick Summary - Coffee is not sour - really good iced latte That day it was sweltering, so we found ourselves looking for a place to drink or shade to hide in between the trail of strong sunlight. After visiting the lake and the bonsai garden, it was time to return and find ourself a cold drink to cool us down. The cafe was slightly difficult to find because it was right next to a restaurant, and a tree's branches and leaves blocked the larger sign '1888'. The menu was easy to read and had helpful notes, such as what was the most popular drink. I noticed there was only one or two cold drink options, so I asked if it's possible if the drinks had an iced options, and to my glee they offered this option. So, I ordered the iced lavender latte and the raspberry lemonade. After getting the order, we found a bench to fit. There are tables and chairs near the cafe, but on that day it was occupied with guests. Onto the drinks. After drinking this, I might have to reconsider my rating grade for iced coffees, and place this as the high tier. This is the taste of iced coffee I have been looking for. If many have read my reviews or viewed my photos, I hardly order iced coffee, and it's due to me trying and failing to find the iced coffee I like. The iced latte here was a good balance of milk and coffee, so there was creamy milky flavor with the robust and rustic coffee flavor. Even though it had ice, the flavor didn't water down. This iced latte is going to stay with me for some time and definitely a reason to come back here to drink this again. In addition to the really good latte flavor, mine had a good fragrance of lavender. I liked it, but my relative thought the lavender flavor was strong, especially on the first sip. The opinions and fondness of the lavender can sway. I also tried the raspberry lemonade, and this was really iced that it instantly cooled us down too. The citrus was just what I wanted on this hot mid-afternoon. Leaving this here - the staff was really friendly and radiated with positivity. My cap I wore that day started a jolly conversation about my favorite series. This is something I have missed during COVID, when I only made coffee at home or opted for delivery: the spontaneous conversations. This morning, my friend and I decided to grab a coffee, and try something new, so we walked over to 1888. I have always seen lines here and figured this place must be great! I ordered the latte with coconut milk, while my friend got a chai. Sadly, my latte was bitter, while also tasting watery, and my friend's chai tasted like Luke warm water. I've seen that they are known for the lavender latte, so maybe I should come back and try that or see if the regular latte is better, but honestly, with so many great coffee shops just around the lake, there's very little reason to every return. read more
