Finally had a chance to drop by this West Oakland location of Proyecto Diaz Coffee, and what a great space and spot to enjoy a craft coffee. This shop is tucked into a side street in the very industrial section of Mandela Parkway, and you'd miss it if you didn't know where to look. It's in a store front on the side of Pacific Pipe climbing gym. If your lost, just follow the trail of gym rats heading for a pre- or post-climb buzz. The shop has a small but super carefully curated menu that spotlights Mexican grown estate coffee, a lot of not most being single-origin. You will probably find a roast to your taste as well as some really creative concoction, hot or cold. I went with the nitro cold brew which was perfect for an 83°F afternoon. The space inside is clean and welcoming with lots of seating. There are also sunny tables outside as well as shady seating in the breezeway in front of the rock gym. While I didn't grab anything to eat, there are some pastries and empanadas on the menu. I did grab a bag of beans to take home. Service is friendly and efficient. We had a spontaneous trip to this coffee shop and I do not regret it. I got the mocha and the concha cause it was cute. The mocha wasn't overly sweet, the concha wasn't dry and the tamal de elote?? Yeah, I took one of those to go. Recommend the tamal de rajas too. The line got long a couple of times and they served everyone quickly. I will for sure be back. read more

This is one of West Oakland's favorites, and to be fair, is quite hidden from the naked eye -- unless you decide to explore the area in more detail. This coffee shop is honestly unique in its own way -- the Western kick of coffee meets the Mexican style of pan, tamales, and more. Upon going there many times, i find that they have a wide variety of things that none other coffee shop can do better: horchata lattes. To my surprise they're honestly one of the best in the area. They source their coffee beans locally from Oakland and Hayward, and their syrups are made from scratch. In addition, they get their tamales from a local tamal factory in Hayward -- which tastes authentic and of region. They also give really good hospitality, and the design of the coffee shop is very modern and chique. I will say the down side of this coffee shop is that they have limited seating inside, and the outside seating is usually pretty cold, so some people just take their food & drinks to go. Found parking quick and smooth ordering, I got the horchata latte which I was initially anticipating some sort of horchata syrup, per other coffee shop experience, but enjoyed it still as a regular horchata with espresso on top. Love this hidden oasis tucked in into West Oakland. Easily accessible and they had good places to park. I was greeted by the barista and a very bright interior that almost felt out of place in the warehouse setting. There was tons of space on the inside and outside to enjoy your coffee and telework. I was a big fan of the iced mocha, which was not too sweet or bitter. I was surprised that they used real chocolate bits and not a syrup like usual. I saw Proyecto Diaz's stall at the West Oakland / Prescott night market and since I didn't want to get caffeine that late in the evening, I decided to try their nopal y pineapple agua fresca. The cactus makes it taste more vegetably overall. I wish I could taste the pineapple better, but it's good if you don't like your agua fresca super sweet. The shop is located on a side street and is pretty big inside, with plenty of space to sit and enjoy a coffee. I came in early, before any rush, and took my time perusing the menu and picking out a drink. I ended up getting the mazapan latte and the pan de elote. I used to come here often when I lived in Oakland, and the service was always great. I came back for the first time in about a year and was disappointed to see the customer service has gone downhill. The cashier wasn't very friendly and made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. I asked if there was additional inventory of a basket I wanted since the one available was damaged, and without checking, she immediately said no. As I was leaving, I noticed she placed the basket in a different spot and there was more inventory. I had already spent $70 and was prepared to spend more, but the lack of help and attentiveness really took away from the experience. Found this cafe by accident, and it turned into a happy accident! I tried the dirty chai latte, cafe de olla latte, and a really interesting pastry. The pastry was filled with raspberry, and it was light and flaky, just perfect! The cafe de olla latte was delicious, I could drink these every day! The dirty chai latte was okay, next time I'll have to get an extra espresso shot in it. Service was excellent, they offered to warm my pastry and I love that. Slight bit hidden since it's nestled down a side street but plenty of street parking and a parking lot (that is shared with the climbing gym nearby). The interior is beautiful and open and welcoming. Staff were friendly and patient and we received our baked goods and coffee in a very timely manner. Ended up getting a hot latte and two fruit preserve(?) filled pastries (guava and fig). Latte was a solid latte, no complaints here. The pastries were lovely! Would recommend the guava over the fig but they did have other sweet and savory options so will need to come back to try out more things. Wrapping up a day hanging out with my best friends in the bay, they brought me to Proyecto Diaz coffee. This quaint but modern coffee shop serves up one of the best lattes I've ever had in my life. I was bummed to find out that they were out of their Horchata latte for the day, but thoroughly enjoyed the alternative that the barista suggested. You can tell that they put so much thought and care into their craft, using only the highest quality of beans. Went here before going climbing at Pacific Pipe to grab a coffee. The location is bright and spacious with tons of indoor and outdoor seating, but tables are coffee tables so you gotta hunch over or work on your laptop if you plan to work from here. It's not too loud here, music is played at a perfect level. The baristas are friendly and fun. Anyway I ordered a Mexican Mocha, was forewarned that it would be a little spicy. The morning I went they also had fruity empanadas and pastries. For my first time here, I was a little disappointed! I love how the comminity supports Proyecto Diaz & it was what inspired me to finally visit the shop. I wish the barista held the same enthusiasm as the community does... She wasn't very friendly when I was ordering (there was no line at the time), and when I mentioned that the matcha drink my friend ordered tasted fishy (literally like fish) & asked if it may have been oversteeped, she was adamant that it was made correctly (even though water temperature affects bitterness of matcha.) Oh, okay. I also saw her tamp down an espresso pull with her fingers after touching a dirty rag used to clean the counter / touching the POS system. Not sure why that was necessary but it seemed like a health code issue. read more

I had this coffee shop on my saved list for a while. I found it on instagram and decided to give it a try. I came in on a Saturday and there was a good amount of people there. First thing I noticed this is more of a hang out spot not somewhere that you can work at. It has a minimalist look I really like that. They do sell some cute things. We ordered two coffee and they only had 2 milk options. They sold some pastries but not too many. I ordered a latte and that was good. My husband ordered a drink that was overly spicy I don't know what it was called. He couldn't really even drink it. We took it to go since there was no tables. My drink was good like I said but I felt I wasted money with the other spicy coffee. I really wanted to like this place based on the reviews.
