This has always been one of my go to coffee spots in Downtown Oakland. I've spent many a morning enjoying an open face bagel (everything bagel, cream cheese, avocado, sprouts, olive oil, s&p) after a workout. I've also enjoyed a brew or two at their bar in the evening. Coffee is consistent with a few grab and go beverages in their cooler. Depending on the date and time you may run into an open mic, networking event or jam session. I appreciate the vibes, the clean restrooms and the service is just friendly enough to keep me coming back. Signed, The Happy Hour Huntress

I stopped by this neighborhood gem in Oakland on Broadway on my way to the Blank Panther Museum- the salted caramel latte encompasses everything in the name. It's smooth, but not too sweet and fills the soul.

Woakland Tonic & Ube Latte w/ espresso
    Abi H.

Stopped by during our morning walk for a Friday morning pick me up! We got the Woakland Tonic & Ube Latte with an added espresso shot. The entrance could be a bit easy to miss if they didn't have those bright yellow chairs right outside. I wish the interior furniture had some of that yellow to make it pop, but it felt more like a classic modern coffee shop. Seems like it could be a nice cafe for remote work! The coffee itself felt light & allowed the other flavors in the tonic to shine, which I enjoy. The Ube latte was definitely missing that classic Ube flavor but maybe it was overshadowed by the espresso we added in. It looked like there was only one person making drinks, but even with just one person they were still able to get our drinks out pretty fast given the circumstances. It took about ten minutes from ordering since there was a line before us. I would come back, but specifically to try their bagels. I couldn't stop eyeing them in the pastry case!!

I was Blessed to chill in this very cool cafe for a few hours. I was greeted at the register, and wanted to sample their award winning roasted coffee so I ordered the Lavender Latte with oat milk. I chose oat milk based on Paul's recommendation. The presentation was so beautiful and the temperature was perfect. (See photo) The flavor was delicious and if I was drinking more coffee I would have ordered another. Trying to cut back on daily coffee consumption, and had already drunk my morning mushroom coffee earlier. Back to the review- I then ordered some food and chose an everything bagel with their housemade hummus. The bagel was crunchy and not too chewy as can happen when heated. The hummus was very smooth with a nice light flavor. So spreadable, and there was a generous helping. The staff are all very personable. The location on maps is a little tricky. The cafe is located on Broadway which parallels Telegraph more or less? The cafe is near the corner of Telegraph and Broadway where they both join. Worth the extra effort to find. Hope my directions are helpful.

I was in downtown Oakland on an early Sunday morning, and saw this shop and decided to stop in. The place is really cute inside! I had a latte and herb biscuit which hit the spot. Thank you!

    Espresso & almond milk macchiato

I got an espresso and almond milk macchiato. Both were excellent. The espresso had great texture and flavor. Slightly acidic, not bitter at all, some fruity notes as well. The macchiato was well balanced and the texture was great.

Most days I want coffee, but this morning, I was really craving a matcha latte. Decided to venture a different way from my hotel and arrive to Awaken Coffee. Super cute ambience inside and their baked goods looked bomb. Cashier was super nice and was in and out with minutes. Super happy with my iced matcha!

First impression the place is very clean and has good air flow. It has a big space for people to come sit and have their coffee. It serves coffee, tea and food/lunch. I try their Ube Latte, that's what it was exciting me. It served its purpose for the hot weather. The barista was super friendly and nice. She told me that the Ube have no caffeine in it but you can also add an espresso in it. First slip was very good, I enjoy the small chunk of Ube. I added some honey for more sweet, but you don't to because it's already sweetened. Definitely come back try their coffee next!

    Matcha latte, large

I've passed by many times when walking in downtown Oakland, but decided to finally stop in it. On Monday afternoon, there were a few people ahead of me so it took about 8 minutes to get my drink. I ordered a matcha latte, large, iced, whole milk. It's currently $6.50 for a regular size matcha latte and $7.25 for large before tip. It comes unsweetened by default which I like, since it allows me to taste the matcha better. It still had a little more milk than I prefer. I'm bummed that it costs as much as it does, but I know this is actually average or better for a matcha latte of that size in this area. They offer a seasonal fall special of pecan pie latte and I also saw they sell lavender, salted caramel, and ube lattes which I'm interested in trying in the future.

I decided to stop in, during a morning walk. There were a good amount of customers indoors, but there was still enough seating for myself and/or additional visitors. It's a pretty large establishment! I ordered a Caramel Latte - it was okay. But I will assume responsibility; usually I request extra caramel and I forgot somehow. Still, I wish the barista was a bit more heavy handed for good flavor. Again, my drink was good, just "okay". Anyways, it was a beautiful morning, so I decided to sit on one of the chairs outside, which was very nice. The only thing, of course, this is right on Broadway and faces the street - it's Downtown, so of course there are a ton of homeless and/or mentally ill folks walking right in front of you, as you sip or eat. I didnt' have anyone bothering me, so I had a pleasant experience . Also, being that I was a Starbucks queen back in the day, I'm used to the wonderful, enormous Venti sized cups. Not here, and it costs more. But I recognize that this isn't a chain, so they gotta do what they gotta do. Would I return? Sure! The only peeve other than the taste/cost of my drink is that the staff needs to be more proactive. Being this was my first time here, I entered the doors on the far right corner. The counter space is huge, and if it's your first time visiting, like myself, you can get confused on where to order. I stood in front of the counter for awhile, while two staff members continued to stare into space. I finally had to ask where to order, because hello, I'm obviously standing here looking at you for a reason. When I finally asked where to order, I was pointed towards the far left side to the registers. Still, how was I supposed to see, when there were tall boxes stacked up that they were unloading and again - first timer here. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my visit and I wouldn't mind visiting again.

I loved this cafe. Got an Ube latte with the toast. The service was the best out of the 5 cafes I visited in Oakland. I'm also used to be a barista so the coffee wasn't out of this world good but the food definitely is for a cafe. Got a hummus toast w the olives, I don't even like olives but it paired really well. The ube latte was a little grainy for my taste but not bad, just not for me. Seating was ample and handicapped friendly.

Do you still have salads? Haven't been able to go back during the pandemic

We aren't currently offering salads. We have bagels with all the fixings, toast, granola & yogurt, and pastries!

Are there plans to expand the hours at some point? (if I remember the café used to be open around 7am and closed around 6ish or 8ish?

Yes! Likely in the next 2-3 months we will add an evening shift back and be open until 7pm! Stay tuned.

Im confused also on WiFi - some tips say there's WiFi Sunday - Tuesday and others say there in no WiFi at all, can anyone clarify?

we currently do not offer any wifi at our cafe. (the sunday to tuesday was something we did a few years back when we were transitioning away from wifi).

Do you still have a no electronics policy? If not, do you have free WiFi?

Computers and other electronic devices are always allowed, but we do not offer WiFi. Tethering or hotspots are fine! Thanks!
