Wood Oven ROASTED OYSTER with Mushroom Duxelle, Foie Gras & Country Ham Butter 6 each 4/5. Didn't taste much of the foie, but overall pretty good. Pan Roasted SCALLOPS with BigDaddy's Fennel, Poached New Skin Potatoes & Brandied Peach Cream 38 5/5. Scallops were cooked well, and the peaches, peach cream, and potatoes complemented really well. But when you order a drink, and are told by the server that the bartender said, "that whiskey belongs to the owner - you can't have it - it's just for him", that doesn't get your evening off to a good start with friends, who are having their first meal, here. Frankly, I was embarrassed, because of the refusal to serve a drink - the very same one that had been previously "offered" to us. Then, when you order 4 raw oysters that never arrived, you begin to realize the female server is not only insensitive to your dining experience, but equally clueless. She also walked away from our table (at least 3 times) before we had a chance to ask her for a second drink (dirty martini, espresso martini, and iced tea and water), a side of mayo or ordering an extra side dish. She seemed disengaged, and only willing to do what absolutely necessary. The food (what actually arrived) was all exceptional, however. The quail, wagyu burgers, fish special and roasted chicken (collard greens and carrots) were all beautifully prepared and tasted amazing. And on our way out, we passed by the kitchen, where the chef/cooks were all friendly and showed genuine appreciation to us, as customers. Sadly, at 1921 I'm starting to get the sense that good service is for the well-known and more elite locals, who the owners clearly chummy-up to. If you're some nobody like us walking in, then expect to be treated as such. There's other fine restaurants in the area, who clearly appreciate our business. 1921 will continue to draw lots of patrons (especially more fancy folks) - but it'll be awhile before we find ourselves back here, even if we become multi-millionaires or local politicians. read more

We love to come to the bar for happy hour and often order a dish from the main menu. They put so much love into their food here and their crafted cocktails. The staff are excellent and seem to love their jobs. We've never had a bad experience or dish here. Make sure to put this on the top of your list if you're in the area. The menu changes often based on the locally sourced food they bring in. Tips: If pork belly is on the menu, get it! Get the chef's cheese under a happy hour just for the deliciously unique grilled sourdough bread that comes with it. Oysters are the best around! The menu rotates based on seasonality. It's not a big menu by any means, but there is a good variety and the dishes are unique. My husband ordered the wagyu burger. It seemed simple, with just mayo, pickles, and American cheese, but the burger was anything but simple. The wagyu made all the taste difference in the world! The shoestring fries had this delicious seasoning on them. I couldn't stop stealing some from his plate. I ordered the lamb shank. It was served with red pea hummus and this giant pita bread over top with what I think was the same seasoning as the fries. The lamb was perfectly fall off the bone tender, and the hummus was a weird, but delicious, addition. Even the pita bread (spread with some of that hummus) was an interesting but wonderful bite. I wandered out to Mount Dora one day, for an excellent outdoor local art festival, and I saw this restaurant that I had been hearing good things about for years. I asked them and they didn't really have a wait around 3PM, so I thought to myself, it is time. I get out of the sweltering sun, and seated in the neato bar area, and get to work. I wanted an app, but I didn't want to get anything too big, so I saw Tiffany's Handmade Yeast Rolls (with Whipped Florida Sugar Cane Butter & Maldon Sea Salt), and knew it was the app for me. Oh so soft. A fluffy roll, fluffier than a Hawaiian, for that really zingy butter. Sweet and salty at the same time. A really impressive app. The mains I ate I cannot find on the online menu of the restaurant anymore, which is a good thing. Seasonal menus don't keep things the same for very long. That's another level of wanting to try and put your best restaurant foot forward. So while you can't order it right now, I got the Wood-Grilled Tilefish Collar (with Charred Spring Vegetable Slaw & Fennel Pollen Tartar Sauce), and wow, it was fantastic. The big mess of a collar was so charred and so moist and juicy. Eating it off the bone like that makes you think that you're eating ribs. Solid showing; one of the best showings of seafood I've seen in Central Florida. I also got to try the Lake Meadow Naturals Fried Chicken (with Ben's Buttermilk Biscuit, Strawberry Hot Sauce & Asher Bleu). Very nicely fried, with a ton of seasoning in the breading. The crumbly biscuit held up well against the giant cutlet, and the hot sauce was very southern. It was hot and a little sweet, I was a fan. I hope they bring it back for other dishes in the future. Overall, there had been a lot of hype for me about this place for the past few years that I've known about it. And the hype was real. I recommend coming out here and trying it out. 8/10/23 - This is a place that looks like a tiny nothing much venue from the street, but don't let that fool you! It was an oasis from the moment we walked in. Truly lovely space that is enhanced by amazing art on loan from the modernism museum, and happily has tables spaced so that you can easily breathe and not bump into settings while being directed to yours. It was really an AAAHHH space and so completely unexpected after walking through historic district shops! A fabulous place to enjoy lingering we decided rather than a quick meal, we were not going to be in a hurry. We were immediately greeted and taken to a beautiful table and given menus. Our server Mason, arrived soon after and almost immediately gained our complete confidence. We wanted a bottle of wine and his inquiries about our preference went well beyond white or red and our price point. He was by very knowledgeable about the wine list and brought us a bottle of Mon Coer that was wonderful and certainly surprisingly under what we were willing to spend. No high pressure here! We indicated we weren't in a hurry and wanted to enjoy a glass before deciding on an appetizer. We had a few questions about the appetizers and decided on the cheese plate. It was nicely priced for what it included and quite enjoyable. As we finished it we were ready to order entrees. RIbeye was not a cut we'd heard of for pork. My husband selected that as one of Mason's, suggestions, and pronounced it amazing. Nice portion and certainly nothing left on the plate. I'd managed to get a bite and completely agreed with him. I ordered another of Mason's recommendations, the Wreckfish, which we'd also never heard of. Truly, wonderful with a grouper-like texture but milder flavor. I'm still a bit behind on my restaurant reviews, especially that this one is back from May. However, I'm fortunate enough to have had so many excellent culinary experiences, I believe they should all be warranted. New and old, good, or bad. That being said, I'm choosing to write now about a unique little place in charming Mt. Dora called 1921. It got its name because the restaurant was converted from an old house built in that year. When you first walk in, you see sculptures and artwork that welcome you with the utmost contemporary vibes. However, the dining room "bones" reminded me my grandmother's sunken living room with updated modern décor and furnishings. It was very pleasing and interesting to look at. My eyes were constantly wandering about absorbing the lovely unconventional atmosphere of the space. They start you off by bringing out glistening, soft Parker Rolls that have large flakes of sea salt on them. The bread is accompanied by a tasty strawberry butter topped with sesame seeds.1921 is a scratch, farm to table kitchen. Their menu is always changing around what locally sourced ingredients are available at that time. Just one of the many parts that makes this place a gem. Because of this, even more so than usual, I made sure my food selections were thoughtfully chosen. The appetizer that absolutely grabbed my attention were the Roasted Oysters adorned with Chorizo and peppers. These were like no oysters I've ever had and might be even some of my very favorite! I've have never tried, or even thought to pair chorizo and oyster, yet the flavors together made for a beautiful marriage. If these ever come back around, they are a must try!! For my entrée, I committed to try the Grilled Australian Wagyu Short Rib. The dish had a stunning presentation, but the meat had a bit too much fat for my taste. The squash, eggplant, and blistered tomatoes were cooked to perfection and tasted extremely fresh. My honey got the Pepper Jelly Lacquered Pork Ribeye with Grilled Yum Yum Peppers. I remember trying a bite, it tasting just fine, and how massive it was in size. Wiistfully that's about all that comes to mind. Those oysters though! I would make the trip all the way to Mount Dora just to try them once again.. along with some new items of course! Another stellar Magical Dining at 1921 in Mt Dora - about 45 min- 1 hour from Orlando if you haven't been there. We hit the new Maw's Moonshine tasting beforehand - loved the blueberry muffin flavor. This place is always perfection all around. From the check in to the service to the food and the exceptional (and generous) wine pairings. Our table had the oysters Rockefeller and the raw oysters. Both were very much enjoyed. We had the pumpkin soup, the pate and the salad. These were all great but the pate really surprised me as I typically am not keen to try something like that. It was so flavorful and the jelly complimented it perfectly. The soup was creamy, fresh and quite interesting. Really delicious. For the entrees, we tried all of them - the duck leg was the clear winner. It was crispy on the outside and tender inside. The venison was incredible too. It was cooked to a medium temperature and melted in my mouth. The risotto was enjoyed as well. I would get these again if we came back. We had the Grenache and Crème Brûlée for dessert. I met some business associates here to celebrate a new opportunity celebration for a very special friend whom I've had the pleasure of working with for 3 plus years. This was absolutely the best setting for our small group, we were seated in the middle dining area next to the street side window with a perfect separation from any of the other patrons. Cocktails and a toast to start, of course I was anticipating this restaurant's twist on my favorite crafted cocktail - Ketel One Martini, up, barely dirty, shaken cold, with bleu cheese stuffed green olives skewered on top of a chilled glass. The bartender was a little challenged to meet that level since they don't stuff the olives here but it was still a very good pour. We decided to order a few appetizers for the table after ordering a second round of drinks - a few dozen oysters on the half-shell which were succulent, slight briny and so clean and fresh - buffalo sweetbread, yes the fancy meat kind or thymus these were cylindrical in shape so I am assuming from the throat but very delicate and the sauce wasn't overpowering which is always good - coffee rubbed venison served rare with roasted beet, very tender and somewhat exotic I high recommend this one and finally a half dozen milk rolls which definitely qualifies as a signature dish and another great choice. The entrées ranged from the porterhouse pork chop to the mahi mahi - I was torn between the many selections but the last item on the menu kept tugging at me so when our server asked I had to go with the 20 oz Prime Ribeye served rare with fries and creamed green beans - all I can say is it was the right choice. A few words about the restaurant and staff - this is a beautiful setting whether you choose to sit at the bar, the dining room or the outdoor patio, the decor is simple yet elegant and creates an atmosphere that's comfortable and relaxing. My friend kept raving about this restaurant the last time we were in Mt Dora. We had decided that the next time we went up there we'd make it a point to stop by 1921. First of all let me say that the restaurant's decor is pretty rad. From the mascot dog statue to the eclectic art, everything is pretty cool! Now onto the food..we were there for brunch and they had a lot of good option but I opted for the burger. I heard it was the best in town and boy were they telling the truth. The burger was delicious and juicy. I usually always substitute my fries because I am not a fries person but this time I didn't and I am glad I didn't. Whatever seasoning they used on the fries OMG.. amazing. The fries were delicious as well. For my drink, I wanted a Bloody Mary but they had their own version with tequila which I am glad I tried. I've been to 1921 for lunch and dinner and the experience was good both times. The wins for me were surprisingly the side dishes. On my lunch visit, I ordered a 1921 Burger and fries. Burger was okay, but the fries were amazing! Crispy outside and tender inside. Again, at dinner, we had a delicious appetizer (although pricey) of brûléed figs. The crushed (duck fat) potatoes were outstanding as well. For my entree, I enjoyed the pork ribeye and my husband had the NY strip. We ended with housemade ice cream. Our server was attentive making sure our waters were refilled and we had everything we needed. So I went with my partner and we just enjoyed the delicacies. Now the food here is not gonna necessarily fill you, it's more or less perfect portion size food. We started out with the roster oysters and that was delicious. However, it was extremely small. If I can do it over, I would've just done one or two for taste. My meal was the scallops and those were delicious, pan, roasted and all the other greenery around it made it taste just so fresh. My partner had the short ribs, and that was delicious as well. Extremely airy, extremely green, and just packing the flavor. It needs in the surrounding items that werent the protein. If I forgot to mention it already, the drinks were phenomenal. Everything was extremely fun and extremely light. I have no problem with this place. I just wouldn't come back again because it's far from where I'm located and I do know a lot of other restaurants that are in this price point that are just as good, and I love to try them out again. I went back this past weekend and will say that I think that the menu, cocktails and overall ambience are better than my first visit. The ambience and architecture of this restaurant are beautiful and the service is extremely attentive. They offer indoor and outdoor seating and tables are well spaced with proper covid procedures in place. For drinks, I had the espresso martini and then an old caribbean cocktail from the dessert menu that was exquisite. The beverage was like an old fashioned with dark rum. It was So GOOD and in my opinion, should be on the main cocktail menu -- now you know to order it. I wanted to go back the following day for the cocktail and the milk buns. Mmm those milk buns. For dinner, we were really digging the appetizers and opted for the following: Milk buns - these are delicious warm soft round rolls with this sweetish exterior and this yummy and also sweet butter. Roasted oysters - delicious Charcuterie plate - chicken liver and pork pates were amazing and worth every penny. Came to 1921 twice in 3 nights for dinner with friends who live locally. Both nights started out with oysters that were fresh and delicious. I thought they were from the northeast. Turns out that they are sourced locally as is everything else. We also had the venison carpaccio, chicken croquets, and hushpuppies. All were quite tasty. Very satisfying! My dinner the first night was the pork belly and scallops which wasn't anything less than amazing. The pork belly was tender and succulent as were the scallops. The 2nd night though, I had the pork ribeye. Now, I don't know exactly what part of the pig is a frickin ribeye, but holy moly, that was incredible. It was through insistence from my friends to order that, and I honestly expected something like a pork tenderloin that is your typical lean and drier side of meat. This ribeye was juicy and tasty throughout. Never in all my years had anything like that. I highly recommend this dish to anyone that wants a pork dish! Good lawd...I may have to try to have it again before I l head home! You'd think after all that food there wouldn't be room for dessert, but we made room. Between both nights, we had the pumpkin cake, smores tart, and oreo laced cheesecake. The pumpkin cake was to be expected and good. The smores tart was rich with chocolate and marshmallow. The cheesecake was super creamy with its goat milk cream and highlighted with oreo crumbs. Fantastic to say the least. Nothing better than an incredible meal with good friends. This place really provided the environment and delicious food to go with that. I read through some of the reviews after dinner. The food is seasonal and ingredients are locally sourced. I live in St.Pete and a few times a year I make the drive to have dinner at 1921- that's how good it is! If you are the type that likes to try unique flavor combinations and new dishes paired with good seasonal craft cocktails, this spot is for you! The real foodies. Local upscale establishment that many seem to love. The food is beautifully prepared but the flavor combinations are not in my personal wheelhouse with dishes such as venison, lamb sausage, and duck. Everyone in my party loved their meals (diver scallops, vegetable plate, hoisin ribs, venison osso buco). I ordered the pimento crusted pork sirloin medium well but it was still pink so it was not appetizing to me. The service is excellent and atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Even though it is not a favorite place of mine, I would still recommend to anyone wanting to try something upscale and unique. Very expensive. read more

This place has a great location and cool atmosphere. First time for us all dining here. We came with friends to celebrate a birthday. The menu is different and not what you would expect. They combine multiple type flavors within a dish. We asked our waiter for suggestions and ordered per his recommendations. We started with the milk buns - they are good rolls with melted butter and sea salt on top. Next we tried an appetizer consisted of cheese, ham & figs. No one is our party particularly enjoyed it. We ordered the duck. It was not cooked well....no crisp sear, overall rubbery and chewy. The hamburger was ok but the fries were good & crispy. The short ribs were very tender and flavorful. The creme brûlée was flavored with lavender...never had a creme brûlée taste like bath soap before. A birthday treat of coconut flan was given to our friend. It was not sweet nor did taste of coconut. It tasted like a clump of sour cream. Everyone tasted but no one ate it. The best thing was the flourless mocha cake served with cappuccino ice cream....it was delicious. We wanted to love the food but was disappointed. I was in town with friends and found this place online on a whim. I would always rather pay more for a good meal than save money and get less than par food and ambiance. This place really is worth the cost. Food was immaculate. I had the snapper which was moist and delicious. My boyfriend had the rabbit which he enjoyed and friends had the burger and the pork belly and scallops, all with rave reviews! The dessert was also unique and delicious. The ambiance was cool. It has an overflow of the museum art so you're sitting among art pieces that make for great conversation starters also. The service was too notch.
