The other day I was in a discussion about the food in Little Havana in Miami. I was asked if I had ever tried the Guava Turnovers at 1928 Cuban Bistro - St Johns a mile or 2 away. I said I hadn't but I was going to stop there on the way home and try it. I was told they run out alot but make more over the course of the day. I stopped and grabbed the last 3 they had left. They were still warm when I got home. The turnovers were delicious. Very buttery with the perfect amount of guava paste. I usually go to a location a few times before reviewing the restaurant but the turnovers were so good I'm reviewing them after 1 taste. I highly recommend plus It's closer then going to Miami or taking a cruise to get these delicious goodies. I can't wait to dive into the menu next. The location was spotlessly clean and the employee who helped me could not have been nicer or more pleasant. Great place so far. read more

I know I've done a review on on 1928 Cuban Bistro before but I just have to do one again! It is always fantastic and it's always consistent and the food is outstanding! Everyone who works there has a smile on her face and they're so happy to help. The restaurant is very clean and it's certainly a gem here in St. John's County. We love coming here! read more

Tried them out today and they are worth a stop. Good coffee and I enjoyed my baked good. Seems like a clean and friendly environment.

We went on a Saturday for lunch and they were very busy (a good sign and understandable). So it took a while for us to place an order. Because it was a bit crowded, we opted as a to go order. We tried the Cuban, Pan con Lechon, and Arroz Imperial. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. I think the Pan con Lichen was slightly dry, but still pretty tasty. We liked the Cuban and the rice dish a lot. The bistro is fairly small and has a bit of outdoor seating as well. A really nice vibe. We will go back to try other sandwich and would love to try their breakfast menu as well. read more

We had a party of 4 for breakfast at 9:30 am on Sunday, 9/1/24. In a strip with plenty of parking. We ordered at the counter and they brought out our food. There's limited seating inside and a 4 or 5 2-seater tables outside with one umbrella. I got the Mezclado Sandwich ($10.95) and we all split Magu's Yuca Fries ($7.95) and Maduros ($4.95). The sandwich and fries were good, but the green sauce really made it. We asked for extra because only the fries came with the sauce, but we recommend dipping the sandwiches in it too. Today, I received the worst service ever. Or its more appropriate to say NO SERVICE! We, as a group of three, came in during the least busiest time of day (2:45pm), to stand in line behind only one person while they made a $40 order of appetizers. To then wait for over 15 minutes in front of the cash register waiting to submit our order to receive no acknowledgement, not evan a glance, no urgency to speed up the previous order and no apologies for the long wait. I was so upset with the wait, I decided to just leave and there was no apology and the person behind the register just said, "Next" to the people waiting in line behind me.. Came here the other day to grab a cafe con leche and some croquetas prior to having breakfast down the road (I know what you're thinking that the other breakfast place probably had coffee, you're right, but I wanted a cafe con leche). When I arrived I was greeted. When I got up to the counter I ordered my cafe con leche and dos croquetas to go. The woman rang me up and quickly made my cafe con leche. If you've never had one, get one. They're rich, they're delicious, and that caffeine really packs a punch. The croquetas were crispy on the outside and rich and creamy on the inside. I'm kind of disappointed to have to write this but, coming from Miami, I've always known that this is the "best" Cuban breakfast you can get in NE Florida but, they were always friendly and the food was hot. Since they have greatly expanded it seems they are getting the "personality" of a Miami Cuban Bakery but,w/out the quality. Each time I come in recently the service has been slow, and unfriendly unfortunately to the point of rude. I have gotten raw pastilitos and cold croquettes. read more

On this rainy day my husband was carving some comfort breakfast food. The staff was awesome, helped us decide what entrees to get. I LOVE LOVE their cheese rolls absolutely delicious I have to try hard to share with the family. My husband ordered a deluxe mezcal sandwich, he said that he would give it a 4 out of 5. I ordered their version of steak and eggs, I felt the steak was a bit tough and the eggs were overcooked. It had great flavor though and the bread was good. The decor is cute and chic, they even set up these black and white umbrellas for their outdoor seating which made the yellow seating color pop. read more

After moving back from Miami, I really missed my weekly (sometimes daily) cafecitos and pastelitos. Not having a cuban restaurant or cafe on every street corner was an adjustment I've gotten used to, but I still have cravings from time to time. When I stumbled upon this bistro and discovered it was a local chain, I was thrilled! I wanted to order some vegetarian empanadas, but since they make them fresh, it would have been a 7-minute wait. Though in hindsight, I was in no rush, I could've and should've waited because they sounded wonderful! Plus, who doesn't love fresh empanadas? I was still happy to grab a guava pastry, which is one of my favorite treats. It was exactly as I expected, delicious, sweet, and flaky. I ordered a cortado as well, and it hit the spot. The to-go coffee cups are strangely too big for cuban coffee, but other than that, my drink was good. I didn't dine in, but the staff is really nice and the restaurant is so cute inside! Just moved here from SFL and this place has Ok Cuban sandwiches (pork was tougher than usual) but I could not even understand the rest of the menu and what they were trying to convey. . I have never heard of a "rice bowl" at a Cuban restaurant.... A few dishes looked similar to their Little Havana counterparts but not real authentic. I will continue to look for decent spots outside of the historic district (this place is in central St. John's. Not the historic district). but probably won't go back here Service was slow and ambiance was strip mall stark. read more

The Cafe Con Leche and Cafecito's are amazing! Hands down the best coffee. Prices are great and the El Guajiro sandwich is delicious!

We love this place! Eat here once a week. My husband can't get enough of their Cuban. He makes it spicy. I have gone for a number of items on their menu and have never had a bad meal. I've done a salad, spinach wrap, tostones sandwich and arroz imperial. Their empanadas are good too. Everything is fresh and delicious. Great flavors! Staff is very friendly. Restaurant is lovely. It is small and gets crowded so we don't usually eat in. There are a few tables outside. Tip-order in advance or prepare to wait a while. They get very busy so it will take a while to get your food. read more

Came in for a quick coffee it was packed. Only ordered a colada, cortadito, and a flan total was $14. A little steep. Service was slow, and cold not very friendly. The patrons were more friendly. I'll give it another try on a weekday perhaps. read more

I had been wanting to try 1928 Cuban Bistro as I've seen many pictures and read a few reviews. I was on this side of the town getting my hair done and saw I was less than a mile from this location. The location had some inside seating as well as a patio. My server was so sweet. Since it was my first time, she suggested the Cuban. Wow, was this sandwich big I had it for two meals! And loaded with meat! It was an excellent sandwich. I paired it with a Cuban pineapple soda which was refreshing. It had just the right amount of pineapple flavor and wasn't overly sweet. They sold tres leches in to go containers so you know I had to take one home. It was also delish! The server told me there was a new location at Jacksonville Beach, and I'm looking forward to trying some other menu items soon! read more

1928 Cuban Bistro is my special treat breakfast spot. Cafe con lethe is ALWAYS hot and creamy and wonderful for shipping. I alternate between the Mezclado (without ham) - a scrambled egg and cheese sandwich with buttery, toasted cuban bread, or just the Cuban Tostado (cuban bread and butter). It's the closest thing to the cafes in Miami and it brings back so many incredible memories. Service is always flawless, and I love the bright and cheery vibe of the store. read more

As the Durbin area is constantly expanding, was delighted to hear that it's latest addition would be a Cuban restaurant. I am a Latin food enthusiast so of course I was eager to check out the newest Cuban bistro in town! Based off looks alone, this place is a hot spot. The greenery, outdoor bistro tables, and classic cuban tiles make this place burst with cuban flare. The menu is full of cuban sandwiches, coffees like cafe con leche, empanadas, and other Cuban classics. This time, I tried the congri rice bowl with pork and fried yuca. I could have opted for plantains but I'm a fried yuca fanatic! On the side, I ordered one papa rellena which is stuffed with beef. The rice bowl was very generously portioned, the rice was aromatic and classic to Cuban cuisine. The pork was juicy topped with pickled red onions, and the yuca fries were out of the park. The papa rellena was very large as well, it was crispy, fluffy-not greasy, and very durable! The dipping sauce it came with was an excellent pairing. If I still had an appetite, I definitely would have tried a guava Nutella empanada but this gives me all the reasons to come back. Glad to see 1928 open a new location on CR 210 in the same plaza as Earth Fare. My sister and I came here around lunch time on a Sunday and it was busy. The interior was nice and simple and the staff were friendly and helpful on our orders. We proceeded to order the following: -Elena Ruth: Roasted turkey, cream cheese, bacon, & guava-strawberry preserves on cuban bread (they ran out of the media noche bread). -Cuban Sloppy Joe: Cuban-style picadillo, swiss, and maduros on a soft bun. I love the seasoning and spices they used. Very good and did not regret. -Cafe con Leche: semi-sweet coffee and very good - 3 Empanadas: 1928, Nutella Banana Guava, and Vegetarian. The vegetarian was the best tasting followed by the 1928. -Nutella Tres Leches: smooth whipped topping and cake was amazing. Semi-Sweet which was great. -Churros (8): with a Guava frosting dip. Fried perfectly. Overall, definitely will revisit and try out other menu items. The staff was amazing and kept up with the busy orders well. I love having an authentic local spot in our community. I have been 3 times and have tried a variety of menu options. My favorite by far are the empanadas. They have all been excellent. I like the beef the best, if you get them fresh they are hard to beat. The desert options are also very good and who doesn't like Cuban coffee? The service is good and the staff has always been helpful with menu questions and patient when I continually increase the number of empanadas in my order. It's fairly small, which fits the theme just fine and they are busy so if you're going to sit down you will want to be comfortable with people around. A little culture won't hurt anyone and who knows you may make some new friends. I did have an issue with the umbrellas outside during one of my visits. It got windy and the umbrellas went flying one of them almost hit me in the face. Thankfully I was only left with a few minor scratches and a bruised ego. We should all be supporting members of our community when we can, this place has great food and a great vibe. We will continue to frequent this establishment. This place has lots of potential but they are so unorganized. So bad during lunch. I had the Cuban. Good chunk of pork but overall sandwich lacked flavor. 10 year old had mojo pesto turkey and loved it. Coming from a kid that does not like sandwiches, that is high praise. The four of us were boring and all opted for the Cuban sandwich. It took a while to get our food due to it being lunch hour. The sandwich was good. We sat outside for lunch as the weather was nice . They had a cute area in the front with turf and yellow tables. The guava and cheese pastry was crispy and fluffy and has the right balance of the sweet and salty filling. The El Guajiro sandwich had an interesting combination of with Spanish chorizo, roasted pork, onions, sweet plantains and fontina cheese. The flavors were a perfect match. Love this little place on CR210. Some great food and excellent service. The only negative is the size of the establishment. It isn't big. Do not expect to bring a group and get a table unless you go at an off time. It seems like people camp out at tables for extended periods. Not a problem for me. I live nearby and get my orders to go. We've ordered several different sandwiches and other items. Some are better than others but really is a matter of personal taste. For me, the food hits the mark! read more
