I've only ever tried the pizza - cheese and pepperoni. It's consistent, delicious, and the business itself appears to run like a machine. They are always courteous, and no matter how busy, they somehow push pizzas out the door in a reasonable amount of time. Highly recommend. I was expecting more based on the reviews. I was pretty disappointed. This isn't NY style pizza, crust is too thick. The cheese is low quality, hence why the cheese pizza is so oily. Speaking of cheese, way too much. So much it doesn't really chew, it forms a big clump. The sauce is fair, nothing spectacular. The saving grace is the blue cheese, absolutely amazing. Gentleman at the front has a quiet voice, but was all right. Double checked our order to make sure everything was correct. And more than willing to explain dishes and sides. I have to say, I didn't really expect much. The name didn't instill much confidence, and the decor inside makes you think the space matches the name. However, service is quick, and food was surprisingly good! Only ordered pasta, wings, and garlic knots, but definitely coming back to try the pizza. Generous portions, beware how much you order. One pasta dish, because of how heavy and filling they are, can easily feed two or three. Definitely not for those on a diet or wary of artery-clogging food. Come for that odd day you need to indulge. My faves were the pasta and the garlic knots. I think most people order take-out from here, but there's definitely plenty of space for dine-in guests, both individual tables and a counter. Their pizza and calzones are delicious. The calzone is large enough to feed a few people. I wouldn't recommend the jalapeño poppers and the wings are soso. For pizza and calzone though, they are the best around!!! There salads are huge and delicious as well!!! read more

I like how this place tries, but it still falls short on a few things. The plain cheese slice I ordered had cheese getting ready to slide off. Therefore, the sauce to cheese ratio could have used less sauce. I also ordered a chicken parmesan hero (sub). The bread was too large for the components within the sandwich (cheese and chicken). It was also kind of lazily put together - the marinara didn't have any depth in flavor, and the cheese hadn't melted to seep into the crevices of the pieces of chicken. The cheese was still one glob - perhaps if I went in later rather than when they opened, this may have been different? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. read more

My husband and I are from NYC originally and in a long lifetime away from that great city, we've tried many "New York Pizza's" in places very removed. Tonight we got our first pizza from 1978 NY Pizza and it was truly the best pizza I've had in years (including in visits to NYC itself) - and the most like my memory of what makes New York pizza so great. The crust was crunchy and perfectly flavored; the sauce made a rich base, the sausage added just the right note of fennel and there was a river of melted cheese just as there should be. We really want to thank these folks. This is truly very good pizza - and easily - reason to come back for more - many many times. read more

Tried this place for the 1st time yesterday. Got a large X-cheese pizza & a cheesesteak. The cheesesteak was very nice. Lean steak & the roll was toasty and not soggy at all which was a major plus. The pizza on the other hand was soggy & burnt on the bottom which I should have known based on how it was smelling in my vehicle on the way home. It was edible but still had a burnt flavor and was a total mess to eat. I'm assuming for a pizza joint you should master how to make a nice cheesy pizza with a crisp bottom, not burnt. Lots of different options for dinner. Please keep in mind we didn't try the pizza but heard great things. I ordered chicken wings and a Greek salad. The wings were nice and crunchy. I like them cooked a little longer. We ordered my daughter the chicken parmesan. It was huge!! If you have two kiddos, they can share. It was good, I had a few bites. My husband ordered the supreme cheese steak. The bread was delish. It tasted so fresh. Great sandwich. Prices were very reasonable. Love this establishment! They have a great pizza. Thin, perfect amount of sauce, and good cheese ration. The chicken cheesesteak is also really tasty. Perfect to dine in or carry out. Nice and quaintly decorated on the inside for a pizza joint. Quick 20 minute turnaround on order, normal reasonable prices. But what really matters is the food and here these guys delivered. Chesapeake wings were large with a lot of meat and good abundant seasoning. The sandwiches were huge and loaded. What was most impressive of all though was our calzone, which barely fit in the pizza box and was oozing cheese and meat, and a great tasting breading. We used to love 1978 but during the take out only these past covid-19 months, I feel like they are rushing to fill orders and the results are less pleasing than we are used to. We like our pizza crust crispy and I think maybe they are trying to make everything as fast as they can and shortening our desired cook time. Also, the toppings seem to be thrown on haphazardly, again like they are rushing. I'm hoping when things calm down we will get our fantastic pizza back. read more

With little advertisement and barely a Web site 1978 does it the old school way: by giving you an amazing pie and then telling you that you'll be back. And you will. This place has a well deserved cult following in the area. Ingredients are fresh, sauce is full flavor. And it's not expensive. No hipster up selling here. My favorite pizza place within a 30 min drive from home. Sauce and ingredients are really top notch. Variety of pizza's make for some great flavor combinations. The crust is a great complement. It doesn't overdo or take away from the creation. It isn't thin crust, but it is airy enough to not make you full on dough alone. The slices are huge, typical NY style.
