This place is the real deal! Amazing garlic knots and pizzas. The cheesesteaks aren't bad either. Don't care for the fries, so I recommend getting the side salad instead. Can't wait to try the pasta. My only complaint is that they don't have a great way to track people as they come in - it's more of their own ordering system and not first come first served. New to the area, ordered carry out. Man at the front desk was rude, the fries were cold and soggy (despite having picked them up within 15 minutes of ordering) and pizza was wet on the bottom. Bottom line: 2 star Sicilian (burned crust), 4 star garlic knots (tasty, warm, and cooked perfectly) so 3 star overall. The pizza was so promising. They simply cooked it too long. That's not acceptable -this is a science, use a timer. As a Sicilian is 16 slices, 12 of those have crust, and all 12 of these were black and hard on the edges. This place has one of the best meatball subs in Maryland . The house made salad dressing may be the best I have ever had in my life !!! Cozy little place in a strip mall , authentic Italian owner always on site working behind the counter exactly the way you want your Italian restaurant to have . I am 100% Italian, and I have high standards for any kind of Italian eating out. I have lived in several spots on the east coast. After living close to NYC for several years, and then being deprived of really good Italian restaurants while living in the Midwest, I was excited at the prospect of moving back to Maryland, and the possibility of good pizza. I have tried several pizza places in the past few years, until 1978 Pizza was recommended to us by some native New Yorkers. This. This friends, is the real deal. The owner came to America from Italy in 1978, hence the name, and it shows. While at the restaurant, I texted a friend who is also of Italian decent the following: "Its [the pizza] got a crispy crust like my grandmother made when I was growing up. I just told my husband that I don't ever want to go out for pizza again unless it's here. I have died and gone to pizza heaven." Although of course not comparable to NYC or even Philadelphia pizza, 1978 definitely has the best pizza in our local area. read more

I was somewhat hesitant to enter this business on Yelp simply because I selfishly didn't want it to get too busy and interfere with my enjoyment! I have only had a select few things on the menu; however those things have been fantastic and long overdue for this area. The pizza is truly great. High quality ingredients are where it's at. Good quality tomato sauce with fresh basil (yes fresh, not dried) really makes it exceptional. The owner takes pride in his product and it shows. Also, the garlic knots are a must if you're in the mood for a garlicky, buttery, carbo-delicous experience. I've had a few of the salads and they're good, but not exceptional. They're pretty much what you would expect from a place like this. I haven't tried any of the pasta dishes mainly because I tend to be a pizza junky so if I'm planning on a visit to 1978 NY Pizza I usually get pizza.
