I signed up for the motorcycle safety class here and was fairly nervous about it. I went to the class to be greeted by the instructor. His name was Derik and he was a great teacher. I made it all the way through the rider course, but sadly I did not pass. It is not the fault of the instructors in my opinion on why I did not pass either. The range and class instructors are very passionate about riding. They will not pass people that they feel do not have most of the basics down. They are fair and will explain to you exactly what needs work. On the days of the riding portion of the class I was amazed at how quickly I was picking up the basics of motorcycling. I can (even though I didn't pass) handle a motorcycle now. And will do so, to practice enough to finish this course. Many people seem to have issues with the Gilroy course, I would highly recommend them to go to the Hayward/Newark course. If you re going to take this class. Listen to Derik. Took the basic MTC course at Mission College. Both classroom and range sessions are paramount to staying safe on your motorcycle and I completely recommend it over the DMV driving test. It was comprised of two classes and two range sessions (where you actually ride) that were approximately 4 hours long. Lots of info presented to you and all the range exercises are straight forward and demonstrated prior to participation. The written test is similar to the DMV's and pretty easy to pass. The riding evaluation, however, is more challenging and to my surprise, not everyone passed. For my group, the ones that didn't pass ran over cones, were visually uncomfortable at handling the motorcycles and just all around unsafe to be allowed on the street. Derik and Ty were awesome and patient. They're great instructors who really make sure you don't build bad riding habits like covering the front brake. 5/5 Stars. read more

I recently attended the motorcycle safety training with a different school. I took the form they gave me for completing the class to the DMV, and was rejected because they hadn't stamped it with a special authorizing stamp. The clerk at the DMV showed me what it looked like. My school didn't answer the phone, but later emailed to arrange for stamping the forms. In the meantime, I'd called CMSP, who runs the program for all of CA. Trish there answered the phone, and arranged for me to visit 2 Wheel Safety Training to get a stamp. Both Trish and Joy at 2 Wheel Safety Training got me set up the same day, and always answered their phones when I needed help. Despite not having me as a customer, Joy went out of her way to help me. I'd gladly recommend 2 Wheel Safety Training based on this over-and-above service, for someone they didn't have to give the time of day. read more

You guys should be smart enough to know that most beginners cannot learn on uphill/downhill settings. I had a very positive experience with two wheel safety training at their Mission college location in Santa Clara. As one of the first students under the new 2015 curriculum, I found the riding course very effective at teaching basic rider skills in a professional and very enjoyable way. From the first mile to the 40th, my confidence and riding skills rapidly developed. The instructors were incredibly polite, friendly, (but not so friendly that they would just pass you for nothing), helpful, and very knowledgeable with years of riding experience behind them (One with 40 years of experience). I also really enjoyed the classroom session because the instructors kept it fun. The instructors genuinely cared about our learning both in the classroom and on the range. DO NOT GET THERE LATE. First of all the instructors have no choice if a student arrives late, they either have to kick the late students out or lose their jobs. Don't come late and strike up an argument with the instructors because it won't help you in any way, if you're late, you're late... Plan ahead to get there on time. Account for time in traffic, parking and walking to the classroom. One of the late student's excuses was "I couldn't find parking", seriously you arrived here and couldn't find a spot in one of the three available empty lots? As for the riding experience the new curriculum was very vigourous and extensive, but the coaching from the instructors made everything smooth and everyone in my group passed the riding test as a result. If you read the new manual they provide you will learn everything you need to know to pass the written exam. The instructors at Two Wheel Safety Training taught me how to safely operate and maneuver a motorcycle, which I had a lot of fun doing. I'm not active on Yelp as a reviewer, but I feel compelled to write this one. I signed up for this course to encourage a friend who was just getting into Motorcycling (never, ever ridden) and for myself as an alternative to just taking the DMV riding test to get my CA Motorcycle license endorsement (moved from TX, which had incorrectly dropped my endorsement from a prior state...). So, I've ridden for 30+ years -- and this course starts at the *very* beginning assuming nothing. Naturally, I thought it might be a bit boring, but I was absolutely blown away by how great the instruction was. And they managed to make the entire experience fun; which, for the folks who had never ridden and were clearly anxious and stressed, is no small feat. The classroom stuff was complete and well thought-out and covered topics like counter steering, analyzing traffic patterns and proper technique for looking through turns. This stuff is pure gold and exactly the foundation new riders need to be successful riding on the street. As far as the reviews talking about the emphasis of being on time, this class runs like a German train - on time. It was very clear in the material that this is the policy, so it is what it is and there's not much room for misunderstanding IMO. Highly recommend getting there early to avoid any grief. And lastly, the quality of the instructors makes this course such a great value. Each instructor I met (Ken, Alvin and Ty) was highly qualified, communicated well and were clearly there to help the students succeed. Highly recommended! read more

This review is for the mission college branch. The class room part of the course evidently is really boring ...but you do not have a choice, you have to sit through it. The riding part is definitely fun. The instructor ( Marcus ) was really good. Even if you have no experience riding, if you just follow simple instructions you will find that it is really so easy to catch up. I had been riding before, but I wanted to take the course, and I found that some of the techniques that they teach through the duration of the course are very useful in real life riding. The test (both written and riding) is really easy if you LISTEN and FOLLOW. The only reason I'm giving them four stars is because, they are not really greatly customer serving, being friendly with warm smiles and cajoling. Don't expect everything to be sweetened. You definitely need to be on time and you have to arrive with the appropriate clothing. I turned up with the wrong kind of glove, but they were still nice enough to let me borrow one of the used ones. Bikes and helmets can definitely be borrowed. read more

I would be careful about giving your money to this business. Please note that this is not an assessment of the quality of the course material or the teaching. For the brief time I was enrolled, my instructor was friendly and knowledgeable, and I found the material really interesting. This review is about the management's overly harsh and inflexible policy on rescheduling, which I believe is unreasonable and simply unfair business practice. To summarize my experience, I only participated in the course up to the first classroom session. I was unable to continue with the on-range portion because I had mistakenly brought the wrong shoes and was asked to repeat the course at a later time. This is totally reasonable, as it's for your own safety, and I would have expected to be able to pick up where I left off when there was an open spot available, perhaps for a small rescheduling fee. But when I contacted the office to discuss this, I was told that I would have to pay an additional $200 to re-do the course (in addition to the original $258 I had already paid). I was offered various conflicting reasons for why the fee would be so high. One being that since I had only completed the first part of the course, I would have to pay entirely over again for the remaining parts. Another was that the lowest they could go is $130, but since it was my fault for bringing the wrong equipment, they were upping that to $200. Regardless of the justification, I think having to forfeit the money I had already given and pay nearly the whole thing over again, for such a trivial issue, is an absurdly harsh policy that no reasonable business would stick to. I would hope the management could be more accomodating of such simple issues, but in the meantime, I would definitely reconsider before dropping $258 on this course. read more

2 Wheel Safety Training - Driving Schools Near Me - Hayward, California

Totally worth it. I chose this class primarily because of timing, but the instruction was super high quality. Learning to ride a motorcycle is hella freaky if you've never been around one before, but Derek and Ian have the right balance of patience, reinforcement, and confidence building. Everyone passed, no one dropped a bike, no one freaked out, no one fell. There's not too much hand-holding, which is good, because it forces you to focus on what you're doing, and because you really feel like you've got your shit together when you get that "thumbs up" on the road course. At the same time, they totally joke around and have a good time. I went into the exam feeling like it was OK even if I didn't pass, I had a good time, learned a lot and knew what I needed to work on for the DMV exam. If you're a little nervous after reading some of the other reviews, so was I, and, indeed, some of the registration materials sound kind of aggro, but I would totally recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn to ride a motorcycle. I think I'm even going to back for the advanced riders course once I have my own bike. read more

Just an update - I've been riding for about three months now. I didn't re-take the driving portion of this course. And yes, I'm riding legally. You see, unbeknownst to me, and perhaps, even to you, dear reader, the much-vaunted CHP-administered MSF course is in fact NOT the only way to get your license and get on the road. Thanks to a particularly irresponsible licensing system (you have to love America), you too can ride without having your riding skills tested in any way. The route may be unconventional, but for me, it was the best one. After failing to pass 2 Wheel Safety's version of the MSF course, I did a little homework. Homework I should probably have done before making the assumption that the only way you could ride was either by passing a two day course and attempting to leap from zero experience to proficiently (ish) riding in that time, or by passing the DMV's even more archaic driving skills test, without even the benefit of two days of learning and instruction. Enter... Wait for it... WAIT FOR IT... The permit! This thing is really a godsend if you find yourself in a situation similar to mine. If you don't pass the MSF course, you may find yourself thinking, "Well gee, I don't have infinite time or money, and I can't practice without the bike I didn't buy because I didn't pass the course, so it might be a little foolish to take the driving test again and assume things will go better!" And you would be right, my friend. So - the permit. How does this animal work? Well, basically, you take a few M1 license DMV practice tests online, walk into a DMV (FYI, use a DLPC instead of a full-blown DMV for this, much shorter wait), and (assuming you brought the proper paperwork), walk out around two hours later with something to hand to an officer if you get pulled over. There ARE some restrictions, though only one will really cause you any grief - you can't use freeways such as the 101 or 280. The other restrictions are that you can't ride at night or carry a passenger. If you're just learning (and have half a brain), you're probably not doing any of these anyway. The permit is good for one year. You can come back to the DMV at any time to take the driving skills test, and re-take the written test, in order to receive your full license. None of this was mentioned by anyone at the course. I get the distinct impression that they do not want you to know about this path, for two reasons. The main one, I assume, is safety. The staff genuinely cares about the (often young) faces passing through their halls and lots, and would prefer not to see them spread thin over some god forsaken patch of asphalt. The other, lesser reason is - like it or not, this is a business. Would you tell your customers that their goals could be attained for much less elsewhere? I wouldn't, especially in conjunction with the first reason. Anyway, my suggestion is this: take this course. It doesn't have to be with 2 Wheel Safety (the MSF course is a standard regimen, and many outfits dispense it). But it might as well be. The price is set by the state, and the staff is wonderful. Pass it and you're golden. Fail it and you know what you should be doing, what you need to practice, and you have your golden parachute of a permit to get that practice in. Let me re-iterate - TAKE THE MSF COURSE. DO NOT TEACH YOURSELF. YOU WILL LEARN BAD HABITS AND MAY NEVER BREAK THEM. Bad habits get you killed on a motorcycle. After acquiring my permit, my bike, and my gear (you did budget for a full set of gear... didn't you?), I spent around two weeks just riding around in circles around my house, menacing the neighborhood. I learned that bikes get really heavy at certain angles at 0 MPH. I almost learned it again a week later. As I finally expanded to less trafficked public roads, I got yelled at by some dude living in an RV near the DMV lot I was practicing slow turns in. He could not understand why some biker was driving in circles in the lot. This made him very upset. I sweat a lot in full leathers in the summer. I got used to using the turn signals. I learned the trick of dragging the rear brake at slow speeds to stabilize the bike. I learned that motorcycles with only one headlight on aren't broken, they're just not using their high beam. I learned to let the engine warm up before riding. My friend did not learn that and revved my cold engine. Don't rev my cold engine. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that there's no way in hell you can go from no experience to safely riding in two days. Ain't gonna happen. You may pass the course. But you won't be ready for the streets. So, my advice? Don't stress it. Pass the course or don't, but for the love of god take it. And then, learn at your own pace, whether on a permit or full license. You'll have to do that either way! I ride a black Yamaha R3. We have had some wonderful adventures together. Please don't run out and grab a liter bike as your first, even if this is America. And... have fun! read more

Big thumbs up. I came to this class as I wanted to learn how to ride right the first time... without learning bad form from my friends. To really learn you need to get time on the seat and ride, but to do that you need a license and a passing grade here means you can skip the riding part of the exam at the DMV. The class I took was a two day program that worked through basic laws as well as on-the-seat time. You'll learn (or brush up on) everything from braking and accelerating to shifting gears, to doing them all through cones. I really enjoyed the class and it got me comfortable to jump to the next phase. The bikes are all cruisers, which is great for learning, but may make the transition to the more aggressive stance of a common street bike a bit challenging as your comfort level was built up on a bike that is easier to ride. The training program was great. I enrolled at the Mission College, Santa Clara location. The rider coaches were patient, very experienced and good instructors. The class room session was good in that it was more like a group discussion. Melissa, Ray and Alvin were our group's instructors on the driving range and they were awesome. They corrected people when they saw them making mistakes without yelling or losing patience. I have ridden motorcycles before in India. But this class gave me a chance to develop new and important skills required for riding properly and cautiously. I very much recommend this course to people who have an interest in motorcycling and are going to get their motorcycle license. read more

2 Wheel Safety Training truly knows how to put together an amazing course, whether you are in class or on the bike I was fully engaged in the training and the trainers. I had Alvin and Craig, they were extremely professional while at the same time fun and provided a lot of insight into SAFETY. It's not just about learning to ride your motorcycle but being mentally prepared to be on the road and watch out for the 6000lbs cars and trucks that will send you to the hospital if you are not 100% focused. The greatest lesson I learned was repeated over and over by Alvin, Craig and our guest CHP and that message is "it might be the driver of the cars fault, but you are the one going to the hospital". I'm planning on taking their intermediate course in a few months. read more

The course structure was great. Classroom sessions were heavy on safety knowledge which is probably required by the safety training program, nevertheless, theoretical training on safe maneuvering combined with range training made it effective. The company need to improve COVID protocol enforcement, some instructors (the others are doing great) don't follow the rules, more details below. Be aware of some course instructors. I had good experience with both classroom instructors, they were clear and helpful. Range instructors are another story, it depends on how lucky you are. My experience with the first range session instructor was bad. He was impatient. When people make mistakes, he scolded people and kept asking them why are you making this mistake. Well, if we know how to ride a bike, we wouldn't be here taking this class that targets people without any or limited experience. I stalled the bike too much during a practice, he stopped me and said to you: you're having a lot of troubles, you're not controlling and you don't know what you're doing. Do you want to do this or not. I was confused and upset: is he just scolding me for being a slow learner or is asking me to leave or is giving me feedback? Also, this instructor does NOT follow COVID protocol carefully. He didn't always wear face covering when he's within 6ft away from us. Experience with the second range session instructor, on the contrary, was extraordinary. She was very patient, gave clear instructions and direct feedback. She told each of us what we did wrong, why that might happened, and what we should adjust to avoid the mistakes directly and succinctly. She was also following COVID protocol strictly, wore a face mask all the time. read more

I took the class this weekend. I didn't pass, and I'm not nearly as pissed off about it as some of the other reviewers. :-) I smoked the knowledge part, but struggled on the skills. I had never ridden a motorcycle before Saturday, the first skills day. I can now ride, but I need to fine tune some of my skills. I was riding a Honda Rebel (I thought it looked cool). After I began riding it, it seemed a bit large and heavy to me. My difficulties were in the low-speed maneuvers, tight cornering, swerving around cones, stuff like that. Small errors were tough to recover from. I think my one real "gripe" was that the class seemed like it had a lot of people and moved a bit quickly. There were other newbies, and getting behind someone else who is struggling (and moving very, very slowly), I was more focused on what they were doing than on what I needed to be learning. I think if I had a bit more time for each of the drills where we were practicing my weak points, I might have done better on the final. The instructors can give insight, but some things you can only learn by doing. I only missed it by three points, which I think was alright for my first time... I've already signed up for one of the Extra Ride Time sessions next weekend, so I'm hoping to address the things I had trouble with, and take the exam again in the near future. I'm glad we have this available to us in the Bay Area. read more

I had a great experience with TWST motorcycle basic course. Signed up on a sunday and was taking the course on monday. I never rode a motorcycle before but i downloaded and read the pdf course materials from TWST website before the class and that really helped. Also downloaded the motorcycle booklet from the dmv and read that before the class. So if it's your first time, try that, worked for me. The instructors were all really nice and funny. I was a bit hesistant to take the course from some of the yelp reviews, but my experience was very positive. You can tell the instructors are really pasionate about riding and helping us newbies get up to speed. The basic rider course starts from the very basics, and progresses smoothly. It worked great for me and i'd never been on a motorcycle before. I felt quite safe, cause the instructors were on top of everything, making sure everyone follows the instructions, specially with a big group, there was 11 of us. I also saw the instructors gave more coaching and practice for some of the students that were having difficulties so that was nice. We had a girl in the class and i didn't notice any sexist comments like others have posted. 5 stars overall. Enjoy ! read more

I signed up for the 2 day course at the Newark location and all the materials are there and the it's a great safety course designed for you to be SAFE. As they say before hand - not everyone will pass. Those who have, I commend you. I unfortunately didn't pass the course but was recommended by the instructor to sign up for the Extra Riding Time and the last session. I honestly rather not pass and someone say 'Hey, you need more practice.' versus someone just passing me along and my butt dead for not turning my head properly. I'm not the one to ride illegally without my permit as well. But, everyone is entitled to their opinion as I read some negative reviews. But, honestly - listen, be on time, and accept that you may fail. Great instructors and it may not be everyone's cup of tea but don't 1 star them for your failure and being late. read more

Hey! After reading the reviews here, i learned one thing - DON'T BE LATE, or you waste your money. When you book the course, every confirmation email, handbook say one thing - come in time! Whats the result? 5 people were kicked out of the course being late. I guess this is one of the evaluations before the course, if you are not passionate enough or can't follow the rules - riding a bike is not yours. Classes: Awesome! These guys are great! Tons of useful information about how to operate the bike, which gear to use, how to act on the road, and safety safety safety. I was really surprised that i did not fall asleep after 4 hours of usually 'boring' slides. You really feel that this lector really knows what he is talking about, and he gives valuable advices. Range: First one was a mixed feeling for me, i did not like the bike as it was in a pretty bad condition (of course, its being heavily used every day, but still ... i guess it could be better), the instructor did not care what we were doing, some things did not work for me etc. But then the other day i fell in love with them and it was tons of fun! I think i got used to my bike and the manner instructors fed us with exercises. When i realized how countersteering works, yay!!! its was awesome! And just keep in mind, every mistake done on the training ground and guided by the instructor could be a potential crash on the road w/o this course. Learning by burning! Summary: Not all will pass, keep that in mind. It was a real challenge for me as i have never rode a bike, i had to learn fast (watch lots of tutorial videos on youtube in advance!), be physically and mentally prepared for the final test, expect to lose some weight as you spend almost 5 hours on the sun in the middle of a parking lot. read more

If Yelp allows a zero star review, that's what I would give for my experience. I am a new rider and wanted to learn how to operate and ride a bicycle properly thus I signed up for the BASIC rider course with my husband. The classroom training went well, but the on-site training was awful. I was "counseled out" of class within the first 10 mins of class. How can you make someone leave when they are trying to learn as their first time on the bike? One of the instructors was extremely impatient and was texting every chance he could, while students were doing the riding exercises on their motorcycles, instead of watching and teaching us, he was texting. As a first time rider, I was still getting used to the bike and its functions. Only 10 mins into the first lesson, the bike leaned to the left as I came to a rolling stop, the weight of the bike caused me to put the bike down on the left, gently. One of the instructors came over and asked me to walk away with him, he then proceeded to tell me that he was sending me home. He marked down on paper that I was not able to control the bike or go in a straight line, well -yes, I am a first timer, I am still learning the first 10 mins. I felt as though I never got the chance to learn. This was a BASIC riding class and if I am not mistaken, geared toward new riders who want to learn. I was not being a danger to myself, anyone or anything - just simply trying to learn. I did not get the lesson I signed up for and felt that the instructor sending me home was unwarranted. My husband is also thoroughly upset and did not continue his lesson. I had explained to the office manager that we do not want to be rescheduled for another class, and that we would like a full refund to go learn somewhere else. She said her manager will be reaching out, nobody called us back. A week later, I wrote a follow up email and got an email response saying they had spoken to my husband when in fact, they hadn't called him. Was this a lie? We are completely shocked and unsatisfied by the level of service and professionalism and lie. We ask that 2Wheel Safety refund us fully. NO, we do not want a reschedule, I don't know how many times I have to follow up for this. Just terrible. read more

This is a review for the San Jose ( Mission College ) but I figure they are the same organization, so you get the same. -- I just completed the course on 12/21 and 12/22. If you have more then 50 hours behind the bars of a motorcycle this class is going to be about as exciting as running a cheese grater over your fingers... Just endure. If your reason for taking this exam is you don't want to waste time at the DMV then I am with you. Its the same reason I went. Yes I have a DMV close by, yes I practice on the damn course, but all you need is a little bad luck and your screwed... come back another day.. My life is to hectic to do that more then 1X, so hence I went to this class.. But don't fret. YOU WILL PASS!! Its almost like you are guaranteed to pass!.. How can I say that, because EVERYONE in my class of 18 people passed.. even people who HAD NEVER ridden a motorcycle before!!!... I SWEAR to GOD, ALLAH, BUDDAH, the 7 Saints and everything that is holy, that I WOULD NOT HAVE passed a few of those riders EVAH!... OMG!!!.. but here we are, with them on the road.. Oh Joy. Here is a note though, if one of the instructors fails to show up, you could be asked to come back, yes that right, even if you completed everything up until the last range evaluation section, you will be asked to come back!... How do i know this? Because it happened!... One of the instructors failed to show up, the class had 19 students, and only 3 instructors, and they can only have 6 students per instructor so we were asked to draw straws to see who would have to come back!... I was like NO WAY IN HELL... i had to re-arrange my schedule, get the time off work, schedule someone to pick up my kids.. are you serious? Oh wait for it, here is the incentive, when you come back for range day 2, you don't have to pay... Honestly! WTF... If you are going to have on your company web site, a disclaimer that says if you don't show, like a concert you don't get your money back, then guess the WF ... if a rock star is a no show, they have to reimburse the consumer... I swear that was some serious bullpucky!... So your 50.50 on that one, and they won't budge.. I declined to pull straws, and that caused everyone else to do the same thing, so a young man offered to come back.. We all pitched in a few bucks to him as our own incentive... what a horse manure maneuver by a company.. If your instructors don't show, you should pay the penalty , refund the charge and charge them nothing, or the 75$ retest fee... jerks. The bikes are beater bikes for sure.. though I have to admit for they run well. I have to agree with the other reviews though I was having trouble finding the right gears as they were all jammed up together.. Again a company thing, if they paid the right $$ to fix those transmissions, then it would not be a problem... Instructors.. I've been hesitant to write a review because I don't think I'm in a position to write a thorough review because I did not finish the class. Actually, I was sent home after I crashed their scooter a few hours into the first day at the range in Newark. Being sent home was humiliating and kind of a relief at the same time. I will explain...... I was a brand new rider. It appears that a lot of brand new riders take this class and do very well. However, I wouldn't suggest taking this class with no experience like I did. I had a difficult time keeping up with the class and I became increasingly more stressed out as the class progressed. I was being yelled at and so were others so my focus kind of turned away from learning the lessons and more on not getting yelled at. I will take responsibility for how this environment made me feel and react. It was best that I left. I decided to write a review due to one inappropriate incident in particular that really added to the hostile environment of the class. One of the students was an experienced rider and his group of friends who appeared to be in a motorcycle club came to watch us. I didn't particularly appreciate this but I didn't mind since my focus was more on not getting yelled at. Anyway, we just finished an exercise and we returned to the "starting line". The instructor yelled "put your kick stands up" kind of a weird request since most of our kickstands were up since we just pulled up. Several of us heard wrong and put our kickstands down. The instructor kept yelling "Put your kickstand up!!!!" Most of us heard that and got it and followed suit. One guy didn't quite get it. The instructor yells over at one if the bystanders (the friends from the motorcycle club) " Will you tell this guy what I'm taking about!!!!!!????" The bystander yelled "Put your kickstand down you f'ing moron !!!!" It bothered me that the instructor not only humiliated a student in front of the class but requested assistance from a stranger not in the class to yell at him! I understand motorcycles are dangerous and the instructors need to be stern and people need to listen. However, I don't think it's very helpful to humiliate students. I give this course 2 stars because although I felt it was a stressful environment the instructors were quite descent when I chatted with them one on one. I probably wouldn't have written a review at all if it weren't for the one incident I mentioned above. There were other questionable incidents but this one was worth a mention. read more

My girlfriend and I took the course together and were extremely dissatisfied with the program, considering how much positive feedback we've heard about the program. We had the overwhelming feeling from our instructors that they did not want to be there teaching and wanted to just get in and out as fast as possible. During the classroom training, our 6 our course only took 3 hours because the instructor ignored questions that were asked and just read out the answers to a potential answers sheet for the written test. I did not feel like I learned very much from the classroom session. Now that I am studying for the DMV test, I realize the magnitude of content that we missed during this training. This urgency continued when the instructors rushed through the riding section of the course (which were only about half the time promised on the website). They constantly yelled at students (I understand yelling to project a voice, but this is angry yelling) when we did not understand their instructions which does not help the fact that when asked questions, the instructors would make us feel like idiots for asking the question in the first place. In my opinion, asking a question like "how do I use my friction zone to shift gears, I've never driven a stick shift" warrants a better answer than "figure it out." I can give a thousand examples of how little they cared about teaching us and how they just wanted to do the minimum to get by and 'finish' their training. Us students were generally disrespected and by the end of the second day of 'training,' none of us felt confident with our riding abilities. When we asked if we could practice more on the bikes, we were answered with "No, we can't do that. Why do you think you could do that?" Again, in my opinion, asking if we could practice more is a very valid question. I understand that courses shouldn't be rerun if time is of the essence, but we finished each session with HOURS to spare. My girlfriend and I are extremely dissatisfied with the instruction we received at Two Wheel Safety Training and give very strong recommendations AGAINST anyone taking courses from this school. I will likely redo my training with another training program because I am not comfortable with the amount of knowledge I learned from my MSF course. read more

This course is a three part course. Let me start this review off by saying... if you are seeking a course where the instructor is patient and kind with you, do not take the MSF course. Instructors are experienced riders, prior military service, or law enforcement, and have no tolerance for "kissing ass," PERIOD. I've read a few of the bad reviews here and most of them are due to the instructors careless attitude. Being that I am in the service, I'm used to attitudes like that. It's not customer service they are worried about, it's your LIFE they are worried about, and OTHER riders' lives. I took the classroom portion at the Hayward location. Everything was quick, efficient, and simple. Pay attention, remember the basics, and you will do fine on the exams. The actual riding portion was taken at the Newark Pavillion at 06:30 (AM). The instructor there (Derek) has NO tolerance for tardiness and will remind you that he WANTS and NEEDS you there at 06:15 like the instructions say. Not 06:18 or 06:19, but 06:15 on the dot. He comes off as a total d-bag, but if you have the will to learn, he has the patience to teach. I was one of the laggers who needed extra attention, and he spent extra time giving me drills on shifting gears. Eventually I did pass it and was able to move on to the next exercise while another chick got sent home. He tries to make the course somewhat entertaining, especially his goofy smile with his half helmet when he does the demonstrations. Overall, funny guy, very attentive, has EXCELLENT hearing (because he heard me talking a few times when he was FAR away from me, and shocked the crap out of me when he would approach me and say something in reference to what I was talking about to someone else). He remembered the clothes I wore, when I was texting on my cellphone, all my gear and color, so that says a lot about his attentiveness. No-bullshit type of guy. I received my DL 389 (I believe) two days after finishing the course ($250), took that plus my permit (written test required at DMV, can be taken BEFORE or AFTER MSF course $31 I think), submitted both to DMV, and received my new license Class CM1 in the mail a week later. Overall great experience and I passed the course. Now I'm riding a GSXR600 (bad first bike, I know, but oh well), and I've applied everything I learned from the MSF course to my bike and have been doing great on the road. If you know how to ride a motorcycle at all, skip this course. Go to the DMV, get the M1 pamphlet study it and take the test on your own, practice riding and take their riding test. Save $285. I thought if I took the course I could take that certificate to the DMV and be handed my M1 license . After 2 days of hours of classroom and riding, it finally came time to take their 50 question write test. At that point I asked the instructor "If I pass your course, I will be given some sort of certificate to take to the DMV and I would be given my M1 license". He says no, you still have to take the DMV written test. At that point I walked out. What a waste of their time and mine. I happen to be a truck driver with a class A license and Haz Mat. to maintain this license I have to take multiple written tests, I also have to pass a physical and background check. I just don't need another test on top of the DMV M1 test...... DP read more

Took the motorcycle course over Fri,Sat& Sun in Santa Clara. This evaluation is for the range instructors Ken & Alvin and their coaching. A). Ken was absolutely the worst instructor - he started off by saying that this was like a military drill Excuse me - you should probably rename the course to rider boot camp instead of rider coach. From the beginning he was in a hurry to get out - rushed through instructions and was VERY hostile to any questions or help. The first day of the range was wrapped up at 11:15am thanks to commando Ken who was just trying to time exercises & get it over to meet the time requirements. The CMSP sites say that they will be 10hrs of range driving time - not in our case. The first day we only drove for 4hrs and 15 minutes tops. This is a marked difference from his demeanor when the inspector was observing the next day - when he un-Ken like, asked if we had any questions. He continuously asked me to speed up through the curves but gave no suggestions on how to develop those skills - he kept 'telling' what to do (which I can learn from a book) but no tips or suggestions on how do do them which is what a classroom learning is for - excuse me, given the fact it cannot shift or use clutch like regular motorcycles. B). Do NOT take this course if you are planning to ride a scooter. The only scooter they have is pretty beaten up! 2 other folks who signed up for scooter left because they did not get one & were pretty pissed. I DID not receive any scooter specific instructions from Ken until once when the inspector was close by. In fact I did not know that the left side of the handle had the rear brake until 2 hrs into range training.(which was the whole point of beginner training) I thought it was the clutch! Alvin, the other inspector was much more helpful and gave scooter tips when I asked him. But I only got him very few times. Lastly, there was no directions on the evaluation and how we are being scored. Some people got second turns & I did not thanks to commando Ken who was the one evaluating. I seriously question the method to have instructor evaluations since they already had certain bias against students. In the interest of full disclosure I did not pass the skills test - but given that my skills are worse off that what I started with & much lower confidence thanks to commando Ken, I doubt if I would have taken my scooter out even if I had passed . Not recommending unless you want to waste $250 and definitely reschedule if Ken is on the roster. Other coaches Alvin and Ray were very very helpful but I got Alvin very few times and Ray was in the other group. For other options, another recommended location in San Mateo is a lot helpful with much more liberal policies and true intent to coach instead of making money by just meeting timed exercise requirement. I regret my decision for not going with them (since I got into a earlier date at the mission college location) but going back to them for my second try. read more

I just completed the basic rider course this past weekend and overall I was really happy with my experience at TWST. The classroom portion was rather dull, but it is important to pay attention in order to pass the test, plus you might learn something that will save your life some day. My only real complaint about the classroom portion of the course is that the room at Mission College was very hot and stuffy for the entire 5 hour class. That is probably more of a critique of Mission College than TWST, but it still wasn't very pleasant to sit in a stuffy classroom for 5 hours after an 8 hour work day. The test at the end of the classroom portion of the course is very easy. It's 50 questions longs and you can miss up to 10 and still pass. The instructors grade the test as you hand it in so you know if you passed right away. The written test at the DMV is shorter, but it's also more difficult. Make sure you study the motorcycle handbook that the DMV publishes before you take the test because the classroom portion of this course does not cover everything that you will encounter on the written DMV test. I decided to take the morning range class which runs from about 6:45am until noon. While this was very early for a weekend, I think this was the better choice considering how warm it was with all of our gear on by the end of the day. The afternoon class starts directly after the morning class and I can imagine they were hot most of the day. Students are required to wear long sleeves and long pants in order to ride, which can make you get warm rather quickly when you're sitting idle in line for much of the day. This all depends on the time of year of course, but I would definitely recommend layering your clothes. Just remember that you won't be able to take off a jacket or sweatshirt unless you also have long sleeves on underneath. Our group was lead by RiderCoaches Marcus, Omar, and Mike. I'm assuming these guys are among the better RiderCoaches since they had a new instructor shadowing them for training. These guys were all great instructors who gave positive feedback when you did something right, but also gave constructive criticism without making you feel stupid when you messed up. And believe me, you will make mistakes. I had never been on a motorcycle before in my entire life prior to the range portion of this course. There is a lot of information to take in within a very short time period. It's okay to make mistakes as long you're not intentionally doing something reckless. The RiderCoaches are all very patient and will pull students aside for private instruction if they see someone falling behind the group. The test at the end of the course is basically a culmination of all of the exercises that the students have been working on for the past two days. The figure eight box is very difficult (I put my foot down), but the rest are a piece of cake. I passed the course along with the rest of the students in my group who made it to the test. We had one student who dropped his bike on the first day pulling into the staging area. He walked away uninjured and the instructors let him stay in the class to do the next exercise, but they pulled him out for safety reasons after he continued to struggle. They told him to call the office and reschedule for another weekend. Overall, the course was definitely worth the $250 considering all of the skills I picked up on top of the fact that I won't be required to take the DMV riding test in order to get my license with my passing grade. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is considering buying a motorcycle. read more

The in-class training was outstanding! Derek presented the information very well.  He made the class very enjoyable with his professional yet humorous style of teaching.  Day two of the course was great; Derek moved at good pace, he ensured each rider understood each task/scenario as well as providing an example.  From my perspective Derek helped instill confidence in each rider, the majority of the class was new to riding. The training Derek provided made day 3 a breeze. Ian is an awesome instructor as well; he moved at good pace, he ensured each rider understood each task/scenario as well as providing an example.  I enjoyed his professional and humorous(Old school jokes, reminded of my time in the military) teaching style. It was great taking the class! They had given me a 2nd chance at the written exam and the first day of riding... omg, I pissed off almost everyone, pissed off my instructors, pissed off ... myself... but the riding coach couple said that I wasn't a danger to myself, which is why they kept me in the course. They were a bit rough, but I guess it was okay because it made me learn. After each round of lessons, I always got pulled to the side to tell me what's up and how much I irritate them because I wasn't going fast enough. Anyway, the second day of riding was better as I gripped the concept from shifting on a bike instead of a car. Well, after million's of yelling and screaming from the instructors... I passed! When I was first looking into which MSF course to take in the Bay Area, some yelp reviews warned me that TWST was a lot stricter and "meaner" than the other options. I'm writing this review to set the message straight! TWST is a great course to take, and is super convenient when it's right in your area. I took the course at Mission College, and had a blast at the 1-day classroom training and 2-day range course! Bill was our instructor the classroom and was a real hoot! All the reviews and some pamphlets give the impression that he'd be a hardass (unforgiving) but that wasn't the case at all. He asks for your utmost attention to detail, but it's all for your sake! I got a 50/50 on the final test (woo-hoo!) but a word of advice to anyone who plans on taking the course. READ THE COURSE BOOKLET IN ADVANCE! My biggest problem with the classroom is that it was a little too hurried for my liking, and working in teams of 6 can be trying when some people are slower readers/thinkers than the rest. If you read the booklet in advance (which you can easily d/l from their site), you can then focus on simply refining your knowledge. I imagine that I'd been very overwhelmed had I not reviewed it ahead of time. As for the 2 days in the parking lot, our instructor was Markus and he was the most supportive and informative instructor you could ask for! He balanced critical feedback with ample praise which made you feel genuinely respected and confident in your riding! Even though it was so incredibly hot over the weekend, his kind wife brought us drinks the first day and a considerate fellow student supplies refreshments the second day! (We probably wouldn't have survived if not for that extra help. ^_~) The practice will be repetitive and diligent, but absorb as much input as you can from your instructor and you'll do fine on the test! I only got 3 points off for not accelerating enough in the cornering part of the test, but besides that it was a breeze! Keep your eyes up, listen closely to what you're told, and never doubt yourself or your bike! read more

I took the basic rider training course back in June-2014 while Derik and Diane where my teachers. I can say that those guys are REALLY professional, friendly, explain very well and they definitely know how to teach and demonstrate. While driving on my bike I always remember their important comments since safety is a big issue and they do keep emphasis on this part during the entire sessions. Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to ride a bike while taking all the necessary precautions. read more
