This place is a fortress for your stuff with a wonderful staff! My husband and I needed a place to store our belongings for 2 months while we transitioned from our loft to our new house (which was still under construction). I knew this was the right place to house our belongings when I asked the manager during the tour if they had issues with pests or theft, and he was mortified and responded "what kind of storage unit would we be if we had pests and theft happening?!" (A response I had not gotten from a different storage unit I toured before finding R and 21st storage). He then went on to share with me all the security and pest prevention measures they take. Booking the unit was easy, the price was reasonable, and it's very clean and professionally run. They have ample available carts and do a great job with security. They also have ample parking. Also because there's only one entrance and limited hours, we felt especially confident in our items staying secure and in quality condition. Cons - the hours are somewhat limited (particularly on weekends when they close at 4) and because it's a fortress vs. drive-up it does take a bit more effort (and time if using movers) to get stuff into the single freight elevator, down the hall, into the unit etc. All that to be said, it was the "cons" which gave us a much better sense of confidence, security, and anxiety reduction leaving our belongings here. You will absolutely get an arm workout from the lifting the elevator rolling door up and down though! We can't say enough positive things about the experience and it's great that it's located right in the heart of midtown! read more

If you need a longtime storage unit please don't rent here. You will end up paying more and more every month, making it almost impossible to keep up with and definitely putting a dent in plans to get in a better position in life. Our friend made some big changes in his life which led to selling his old Victorian home in downtown Sacramento. He chose this facility to store his antique furniture for a year while he went through many stressful situations. The day came for us to pitch in and help him move to his new home in Santa Cruz. Joe K and I arrived first thing in the morning to help with the loading of his furniture into the moving van. When we arrived, I was impressed at the shear size of this multi level storage building! You enter a huge open entrance where the office is located, and a place to back trucks into for ease of loading and unloading. The office also sells plenty of packing supplies for your convenience. We were greeted by a nice young women who was very helpful in assisting our friend with the unit closing procedure. There are five stories of units in various sizes, including some PO boxes. A freight elevator is available for customers to access as needed during business hours. The business also provides a variety of carts and hand trucks to help with moving your stuff located in the foyer near the office. They also have a medium sized parking lot in the back for storing vehicles long term. Not an easy lot to maneuver through when driving a big van. There is only one way in and one way out. Everything went smoothly as we went through several trips of transporting the fragile furniture, from the rental unit, onto a large cart, into the freight elevator, down the wide, walkway slope, and then into the moving van. It took time, but it was a successful beginning to the full, stressful day planned ahead. read more

I rented a storage unit from 21st & R for three months. They seem to have the best prices in town and it's nice that the units are all indoor. My unit was very clean and the place looked well maintained. However, I am giving them 5 stars for their staff. Extremely nice, professional, and helpful young men who just seem to be naturally happy and pleasant. My only wish is if the hours could be longer, especially on the weekend. Also, if you get assigned a unit on the top floor (based on availability), it can take extra time getting stuff in and out. Unfortunately, my unit was on the top (5th) floor and it takes a full minute to get there on the freight elevator (the kind you have to manually lift and lower the gates, then press & hold the up/down button). It's a great workout lifting the gates though! :) The place can get quite cold (or hot, depending on the season). If you are renting in the winter, bring gloves and a jacket. Anyhow, for the friendly staff, excellent prices, and clean facility, I would definitely recommend 21st & R Storage! read more

The fact that all the units in this facility are indoors pretty much had me sold on this location. I also like that it's in midtown, very close to where I work and easy to access if I need to pick up/drop off anything, which I regularly do. The facility has camera surveillance and all floors (5 stories) are checked regularly throughout the day. I was treated like a valued customer from my first phone inquiry about renting a unit. The employees have a friendly and easy nature and get along with customers and each other and have always been helpful, making ladders and tools available when I needed them (and forgot to bring my own.) They have loading docks, carts and an industrial-sized freight elevator. All hallways are lit but you may want to bring a lantern or flashlight if you'll be inside your unit. Boxes and packing materials are available to purchase not just for storage but for shipping packages or organizing at home. And for local history buffs, this building was originally Capital Van and Storage then the Bekin's moving company's building, has always been a storage facility and has been standing for over 100 years. read more

Pros: - super nice staff, convenient location in midtown, very stylish old school elevator Cons: - Said elevator (the only elevator) is regularly broken and down for maintenance, often many days in a row meaning anyone not on the first floor is limited to a super narrow and steep emergency staircase if they want to access their unit. - They will raise rent on you by 20%+ every 6 months like clockwork. - if anyone makes a mess, it will take weeks to months to get it cleaned up. At one point there was a comical amount of mud tracked all through the 4th floor, leading right up to one of the unit doors. Kinda funny you could tell exactly who was responsible. Anyway, it was months before the floor was cleaned. - At one point for several months straight, there were several people living out of one of the units, and they would spread out all there stuff in the hallway and spend the days watching TV on their phones blocking the halls, with their dogs barking as I walked past each time. I understand that housing struggles are very real, especially these days, but this is not safe or sanitary for the people living here, nor fair for others trying to access their units. read more

This storage facility and staff have always been reliable and consistent. I rented a unit at the end of 2019 and the day I came in to unload my belongings, the elevator wasn't working. Having reserved the unit online, the manager was able to make accommodations for a different unit that was easy to get to without use of the elevator. This was the best experience I have ever had with a storage company. Andy and and a female employee helped me, (I forgot her name), but they were incredibly accommodating and really went above and beyond for is. I literally had no problems at all. The move was very stressful for us, because of mobility issues, and the worst movers I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. I thought my purse was lost or stolen but the movers packed it with my other belongings, and because of that I had no ID, money, credit cards or debit cards to pay. My mom called them on my behalf and even though she couldn't be there in person, they allowed her to pay and provide the information that I normally would have had to provide. They just asked that I bring my ID when I return. They also came to out of the office to my car to help me because of my mobility issues. I want to thank them for being so helpful. It was the only thing that went smoothly for me. I really appreciate their help and I would recommend them. read more

UPDATED 2010-09-22: Bill and Eric(?) are great, very friendly and helpful. However, I had to deal with a particular employee on a Sunday afternoon who drastically changed my opinion. I requested to modify a detail of my lease and asked a question about a peculiarity in their policy/process. When I tried to discuss her response she turned on me and was belittling and gave threats. After posting, I spoke with Bill. He reassured me that she was NOT following their policy and has since left for reasons not related to our encounter. Also known as 21st & R Storage, Storage Pro is perhaps the nicest and cleanest storage facility I've ever visited, let alone used. My concern was that this being Sacramento that my stuff would either melt in the summer heat or get flooded during the winter rains. Rest assured, neither will happen here - it's this old concrete monolith, always rather cool inside, actually - which used to be a grain storage building, I think. (The guy that works there I'm sure would be thrilled to give you the history of the place. He's awesome.) It's got an old but definitely effective old freight elevator which takes a little getting used to but I kind of thought it added to the charm of the place. Which brings me to their staff - they could not be nicer or more helpful. Frankly, the place is so nice that I'm a little sad that I'm about to close my account there (I've finally got a place big enough for everything). I'd definitely recommend them. read more

After going through the absolute Hades that is U-Haul, 21st & R shone like a heavenly beacon. You can rent Budget trucks or store items. Love the elevator. I think it's bigger than some of my previous apartments! Surprised to hear the family heirloom review, I suspect it's fake. Not only were the family heirlooms stolen, her wedding dress and all things of value were in there! I've talked to other renters when I'm there, no one's ever had an issue. You won't find friendlier, happier workers than the employees at 21st and R Self Storage. It doesn't make sense, but for some reason the nicest people in Sacramento work here. And there's free coffee and cookies, too! Yum! Hats off to Henry and Andy for great customer service with a smile! As for the place itself, the units are clean with easy loading. I do wish their prices were a little bit more competitive, but perhaps you pay a little more for this convenient Midtown location. Look for discount coupons online at their site before reserving. About two months ago I decided to move out of my apartment and rent a room from a friend. I wasn't ready to sell off everything right away so I decided to put my belongings into storage. Another friend actually had a unit here a few years back and he had liked it so I decided to go with this place. The guys who run the place are super friendly, professional and have always been willing to lend a hand to a single girl. The units are clean, climate controlled and over these last two months, I have not had any problems with my stuff being in storage. I know that my possessions are safe and still in excellent condition. The rates are comparable to other facilities in midtown but this place has the added bonus of being an historic site. The main building use to be storage for Model-T Fords back in the day. Apparently they came right off the tracks behind the building and were put onto a massive freight elevator that is still operating [but is obviously in great condition]. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. read more

I give this storage facility my highest recommendation - An "A+" grade! The entire staff is highly professional, personable and helpful. They always make every effort to help their customers have a positive experience while their possessions are in storage. Avery, Assistant Manager was FANTASTIC!!! He always bent over backwards to help me whenever I needed assistance. Avery is a true professional who is 100% committed to providing exemplary customer service to their clients. If senior management reads my post, please give Avery a RAISE and a PROMOTION! He is a great ambassador for this business. The other staffers were also super-terrific - Andy, General Manager and also their part-timer Rick (or Nick?) not sure about his name. Both these gentleman were helpful, friendly, professional and very service oriented. It is a convenient location, in the heart of Midtown - just a few blocks from the 16th Street and 23rd Street light rail station. I will highly recommend this storage facility to anyone I know who needs to rent a storage unit. The only issue I had was it was VERY expensive, a whopping $188.00 a month just to rent a small 5x10 size unit. From time to time, they DO have "internet specials" and "new customer specials" at a significantly reduced price, but unfortunately when I needed to rent a storage space, this discount did not apply. I think it depends on availability - Example: If they have a glut of vacant units, the prices are deeply discounted - unfortunately, when I needed to rent a unit, this facility was almost at full capacity with the vast majority of their units already rented/occupied. There was only ONE 5x10 unit left which was still vacant. That is why I was sort of "scorched" and had to pay a whopping $188.00 a month rent. I don't blame this company for that - the rent is based on occupancy/vacancy statistics and that establishes "market value" and the "going rate". I have zero complaints and it was 100% positive experience regarding location, customer service and amenities. There is a huge entryway with a loading dock you can pull up your truck to easily load and unload your possessions. There are plenty of dollies and four-wheeled rolling carts with a flat platform always available for customers. It is not a "temperature controlled" building, so there is no heating, nor air conditioning in the facility. The site was built in 1918, exactly 100 years ago, but they have a sturdy, MASSIVE, HUGE freight elevator to transport stuff up and down five flights. Considering the age of this building, it is extremely clean and a well maintained facility. The hallways and common area are quite well lighted, but please be aware there is NO LIGHT BULB inside any of the storage units. Please bring a flashlight if you want to poke around your storage unit to find things in boxes. There is very good, bright lighting in the hallway, common area - but no light bulb fixture inside the unit. I used a flashlight when I was inside my unit and never had any significant problem when I needed to get inside my boxes to find stuff. There are NO fire sprinklers inside the individual units, although in the common area there ARE fire sprinklers throughout the entire facility. Renter's insurance is a MUST if you are going to store your possessions in a storage facility - so no biggie. I always had Allstate renters insurance because they offered the lowest price for the best coverage. This storage facility is NOT open in the evening, so customers need to be mindful to enter and leave on time. Monday-Friday 8am - 6pm - Saturday and Sunday 10am - 4pm. Whenever I went there to get into my storage during daytime hours the huge freight elevator was not being used by other customer, and I had easy access to get from the first floor to the 5th floor. Please be mindful that on weekends - especially at the very beginning and end of the month, this facility is SUPER BUSY and the freight elevator is heavily used by other customers. Prior to closing time, the staff ALWAYS does a VERY extensive "security check" to make sure their are no loiterers/wierdo "sketchy" people trying to illegally stay inside the building. There is a VERY good security system throughout the entire facility with zillions of security cameras filming activity inside the facility. This place has been great. The staff is very friendly, the amenities are convenient, and the site feels really secure and very clean. I lost nearly all of my belongings in a house fire in 2016, and the concrete building makes me feel very safe! The staff has been super accommodating, as well, helping me figure out if I wanted to do short term or long term storage, always patient and never pushy. The only disappointment, which isn't even worth taking off a star, is that it closes at 6, which is fairly early for me. read more

Great people, great facility I'm moving out of my house in preparation to sell it but before I have a new home to move into, so I needed a place to store my stuff - lots of stuff. I didn't really consider anywhere else other than StoragePro at 21st and R because I like the fact that they're in a tall warehouse AND they are close to my house (Upper Land Park). I stopped by there on a weekday and got a great tour by Avery who works there. He gave me some material to take home and ponder; two days later I decided I'd rent space from them, two 150 square foot rooms. I was lucky to get two that are near each other on the second floor. They were both clean and tidy. Mine each have their own overhead light bulb, not all their units do; that's a nice plus. During the time I negotiated my units they were running some specials that discounted my rental costs fairly significantly the first month or so. The two rooms are different shapes. They are both about 150 square feet but one is wide and shallow while the other is more rectangular. Because I was moving so much stuff I carefully measured each room and then went home to plan where all my big items would go using graph paper and cut outs to scale. Worked great. Their freight elevator is ginormous! It was explained to me that the building was once used to store automobiles that were transported up and down that elevator, so you can imagine the size. On the week day I moved in my stuff (see my review of A Simple Way to Move) we had the elevator pretty much to ourselves, which made quick work of getting things into the storage rooms. My rooms both have roll down metal gates and I bought round locks for each of them from StoragePro. I did not buy insurance as the coverage wouldn't be sufficient in my case and I learned that my homeowners policy will cover my things UNTIL I move out of my house, at which time I'll have to figure out what to do. The are only opened during hours when there is staff on hand, so you can't waltz in at odd hours, but I consider that a security plus. I was told that they walk the floors regularly to insure locks haven't been tampered with. In all, I'm very happy with my choice for storage. read more

UPDATE: The fact that these folks are denying this incident is classic. I am not sure how they could have investigated this event when they don't have my actual name. Are they denying that any thefts happened in 2006? What exactly do their records show with regard to burglary? And how about the policy on storage locks and insurance? I know where my family and I stored our cherished things and I know where they were stolen from. Denying any knowledge of the incident is one thing but saying I made a mistake about where it happened is fraud. Ugh. Where to begin? I rented a unit here for about two months. I gave proper notice I was vacating the unit and did so on time. About 2 weeks after moving all of my things out, I received a letter in the mail regarding past due rent. I called immediately to resolve the situation, and left a voicemail since it was after hours. The very next day, I received a call back from a nice young guy who said that the letter I received was an error and to disregard it. He reiterated that I owed no rent on the unit I had moved out of. So today I get a phone call from an older man saying that I owe past due rent. I told him this is not possible, since I had spoken with another employee last week who told me that I didn't owe past due rent. This old guy starts talking to me like I'm some idiot, saying that the movers I hired didn't remove the lock and that the rent was still my responsibility. I told him that I wasn't aware that the movers hadn't removed the lock; I assumed that they had, especially since the last guy I spoke to there told me that no rent was due and never mentioned the lock issue. The old guy wasn't having it. He told me that he had spoken with his employees and neither of them admitted to telling me this. I told him I will happily produce the phone records showing the call I made and the call I received last week. He then asked me why I hadn't responded to any of the emails they sent me and I told him that I never received any emails, I only got the one letter in the mail and I had called to resolve it as soon I received it. He insisted that they sent me the emails anyway. I checked my spam, they weren't there. This guy was really something else. No customer service skills whatsoever. We went round and round about the fact that his employee told me I didn't owe anything, so I'm not going to pay it. He ended up hanging up on me. I'm an honest person, so if I would have known that the lock was still on the unit, I would have paid up. But after the first guy told me that the bill was an error, how am I supposed to believe that the lock was really there? This is utterly ridiculous. Look, mistakes and misunderstandings happen, but the way this place handled it is shameful. I would never recommend this place to anyone. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!! read more
