Have been bringing our cars here for years. Flawless every time, whether old beat-up junkers or newer nice cars. He even bailed me out once when I couldn't find a new battery and apologized for needing to charge me market price. But now we have a fancy new Audi, whose brakes I hammered on, ignoring all the cockpit warning messages, until the car threatened to not stop at all anymore. Out of habit, I was planning to bring it to the dealership, because it's a fancy new car and the dealer's propaganda about how untrustworthy independent mechanics are worked on me. But then I figured, what the heck... Dan [I'm assuming that's who I've always worked with. We were never formally introduced.] has never let me down before... So I brought the car in and Dan informed me that, indeed, I had basically destroyed the brakes. He gave me some options for keeping the cost down but there wasn't much to be done at this point except replace everything. Rotors, pads, sensors... like I said, I did some great work here. He does the work that day, at probably half the price the dealer would have charged, and now the car stops again! Fantastic. Except a few days later, I noticed a squeaking noise. And over the next few weeks, it got gradually louder and louder, until it sounded like I was driving a dump truck. Uh oh. I call Dan. He is very concerned. He asks me to bring the car in immediately. It turns out one of the new brake pads appears to be defective. And with no hesitation, no hedging, no negotiation, he just replaces it. A few hours later, I have the car back, and now it doesn't squeak anymore. Super, super happy. He definitely stands by his work and will do what it takes to make the customer happy. Plus his prices are reasonable. I don't know why anyone would go anywhere else. read more

Extremely rude and incompetent. I take my car into this shop for over heating. They told me they'd look at it the next day. 2 days go by without a word so I call. They tell me they'll call me in an hour to update me. Never got that call. I go back to said shop in a rental to grab some equipment (very heavy items) from my car. As I'm putting this into my car another car pulls up literally 2 inches from my bumper.. so I'm looking at him like are you serious?? There was plenty of space elsewhere. So I'm literally squeezing between the cars to load my stuff then I drive off. I get a call 2 mins later " this is the auto shop, since you wanna look at me like I'm a criminal you can take your car to dealer".. so I just said okay and had AAA tow it to a new spot. NEVER dealing with this people. Highly recommend you go elsewhere! read more

Rare is the business in SF that deserves 6 stars. Don't bother even price shopping anywhere else in the Bay Area, let alone SF proper - it's a waste of your time. HOB has prices that beat their competition by a country mile. I have pads included in my service plan for my Mazda and even with them included, after Royal Auto's price for labor, HOB was still cheaper for new rotors and pads. A week and a half after our latest brake job we started getting a weird sound from the wheels. Called and Dan said bring it in right away - didn't even have to make an appointment. I brought it in around 12 and he had me on my way before 2:30 including an hour wait for the parts distributor to ship him new parts, and then he apologized to me for the wait! Seriously, you dropped everything to put me at the front of the line, did the work and gave me new parts all for free? What could you possibly have to apologize for! Customer service like this hard to find in any industry. I'll never consider going anywhere else for brakes. read more

I loved house of brakes. I am so sad that Dan is no longer in business. I used to bring my car here because Dan provided honest, affordable, and dependable work at all times. This is not easy to come by with mechanics across the bay area. I am just now finding out about house of brakes closure as I need to have the rear brakes replaced on my car. Best mechanic I have ever been to. I brought in my car at 8am when they opened to get the brakes worked on. The guy took my car for a spin, called me at work to give me an estimate and a time to pick up. I came back at noon and it was done. He even took the extra time to take it on a spin before I got the car to make sure it was in working order. Honestly, it doesn't seem like a big deal but it's something that most mechanics don't do. The best thing - it was cheap. I got out there for $250 for brake pads and resurfaced rotors. I have a bunch of uncles who are mechanics and I definitely appreciate not being fleeced. I brought my car to this place due to the great reviews on yelp, even though I only read the one star and two stars reviews. At the beginning I thought my front brakes were due for new brakes since I can hear the squeaky sound whenever I step on the brake pedal. I parked my car and gave my car key to the owner and told him I needed the front brakes changed and check if I need to change the other two brakes. Owner gave me an honest quote that I cannot refuse. An hour later he calls me on my phone to tell me that my front brakes have 50% left while my back brakes have 10% left. I told the owner to proceed with changing the back brakes. Few hours later I took the Bart from downtown back to the garage and I was a happy camper. Great honest service. I only wish they opened during the weekend. read more

I brought my mini-cooper to this shop because the mini cooper dealership in SF closed few months ago. The person who works there (Dan) is very friendly and down-to-honest guy. He seems not to take advantage of me and he totally understood my situation (I had to leave my car for few days as I had to be out of town). He says he can take time to work on other cars and my cars. That is an example of how people should work - provide good quality but not to rush. Ive been having problems with my Camry that seems to be coming from the rear brakes. House of Brakes installed new rear brakes in March 2018. So, today I brought the car in for a look at the rear brakes. They test drove it twice and pulled off the rear and front brakes. And checked the pads, calipers, and rotors. Nothing wrong and NO CHARGE. And they said I could come back again if I needed to. I will have to go to the dealer now to determine if something else is wrong. The last time I went to the dealer I was charged $187.00 just to look at my car. My neighborhood mechanic charges $85.00 just to look at my car. read more

I can't rave enough about this place! The owner and his son are very friendly and super helpful. The owner is knowledgeable, kind and honest which is so rare to find anywhere when looking for a mechanic or brake specialist. I first came to then with my jeep and then my armada. The owner took the car, called me when he inspected it and broke it down what needs to be done. He didn't say everything needed work but did tell me remaining life span and what is urgent. I took my car there to change the driving belt. I went previously to another shop to change it and they mesed up not only once, but twice. Not only House of Brakes fixed the issue, they convinced me to get go to the other store to get my money back, which I did and got my money back. A couple of days later, House of Brakes called me to know if everything was ok with my car. I remembered that the last time in SF I saw their shop so I called them to see what their price would be. They quoted me a very fair price. I dropped my car off a bit late because there was lots of traffic on my way to drop off my car and they still completed it before 5pm for me. He even called me to tell me that I didn't need my rear brakes rotors/replaced yet. I was told by the previous shop that I did. They could've easily just taken my money and replaced them anyway like most shops would do with women, but they didn't. The dealership service department told me that I needed all 4 brakes and rotors replaced and it would cost $1200.00 and with their special The price would net up being $1100.00. Such a deal. I called House of brakes andDan told me the cost could be anywhere from $400.00 to $750.00 depending on his inspection. I brought my car in at 8:00 am., he called me a hour later and I needed new pads in the front, he'd resurface the front rotors for $245.00. Dan also told me the back brakes were fine. They provide excellent brake work at a very reasonable cost. The only issue I had was that my tan leather driver seat and steering wheel were black with dirt when I received it back so they can definitely improve on cleanliness. Nothing a little leatherique couldn't solve though. Overall still a good value proposition in terms of quality of work performed and knowledge of vehicle. read more

Had a great experience here. I arrived before 8am and needed my front brake pads replaced that day, as I was selling my car that afternoon. Dan told me that he had 10 appointments on top of the packed lot he had out front and he could only get me in the next day. I thanked him for his time and started to head on my way to try somewhere else. Just as I was pulling off, he caught me and said he didn't realize I had driven all the way down there and that he would find a way to get it done that day. He was finished by about midday and the price was super reasonable. Didn't try to get me to do anything unnecessary. The dealership tried to castrate me over some brake work and they thought they'd twist the dagger in my entrails further by saying my struts were leaking and fucked, on top of saying I would have to get into a cryogenic machine to return sometime in the distant future for my car. I took it to House of Brakes and the dude tells me, "leave your car here and we'll have it ready later." The brakes were fixed, and I told him what the dealership said about my struts. So I had a long-time lifetime friend who is now a senior and she has a car that she loves and the front brakes started to make some squeaking noises about a week ago! Both of us are native San Franciscans born and raised in the Mission District and we love to support Mission District and certainly San Francisco businesses! Got to meet Dan the owner who everyone that has lived in San Francisco in the Mission District for the last 40 years seems to know very well and he is much admired and respected. I decided to Yelp the business and I was surprised because normally no matter who you are there's at least one minor or major complaint. This business has none and it seems like it only has five stars and with very good reason. Dan is an old school mechanic and has a very high standard and his business is based on honesty and integrity! As a teenager I grew up under a hood a San Francisco hot rodder for sure. So I have a very good understanding of auto mechanics. Last week we agreed I would bring the car in on Wednesday and did so. I dropped the car off at 8:30 a.m. and an hour and a half later he called me to inform me what the problems were. He gave me an extremely decent estimate and cost of repairs and parts replacement. If you're looking for someone you can trust. That you can bring your car to with your eyes closed and know that you are going to get a very fair price this is that business! It's a one-of-a-kind business based on integrity and high standards when it comes to auto repairs. I cannot recommend this business enough. This car belongs to a senior citizen and as we all know seniors are on fixed incomes. Never mentioned that to this business owner but this is one of those rare cases where you don't have to. I'll echo all the other praise here- these folks have to be one of the last honest mechanics left in the business, and make choosing them one of my best decisions of 2017. Starting from the quick call to get a quote, they were no-nonsense and highly knowledgeable about working on my car, including taking just a few moments to make themselves available to my coming in the next day. Upon arrival, I simply handed over my keys and walked out, with a promise they'd call me after taking a look. Fast forward a few hours, and the wheel lock I thought I'd left in the glove box simply isn't there. Dan was incredibly generous about it, and found it without complaint with my spare tire. After a quick look, a brutally honest diagnosis ("it's not a safety issue but it's going to get worse and worse"), and a final quote right in the middle of the initial estimate range, my car was ready to go just a couple hours later. Upon my visiting to pick it up, Dan took the time to pull my rotors out of the recycling bin and show me the issue I had questions about including highlighting steps I could take in the future to ensure it didn't occur again.
