I went in this store to look for some dvds. I found the Inuyasha 2nd season box set in there priced at 14.95 on the 2nd and Charles tag which is what it's priced at new on Amazon. However, it had a different tag on the back that said 11.99. The dvd only goes for 8 dollars on eBay so I was a bit confused, especially considering it was a used box set and the dvds had scratches on them. I went to the front to see if they could mark it down and they said that they couldn't and that the old tag didn't matter. Before leaving I saw the associate I was speaking to rip off the old tag before putting it back on the shelf. This store is a scam, support local used media shops. read more

This review is for comic books only. They probably have 30,000 and they are packed so tight that you cannot look through them. The prices are outrageous. If you find a comic that you like check the eBay price 99% of the time it's cheaper on eBay. If you decide to go through 30,000 comics 1 and 100 might be a good deal meaning you'll save a couple dollars. It's never been great but now it's god awful. They're not organized at all either. read more

First, I want to say this store used to be THE ABSOLUTE BEST. From 2015-2020, I would go at least twice per week. After going only occasionally after 2020, it just wasn't the same. Fast-forward to my most recent visit where I went in to look for comic books. I was absolutely floored to see that they are now pricing their comics at a minimum of $4.95 each. It could something work less than a nickel to a collector, yet they want $4.95 for it. INSANE! read more

I picked up 6 history books to read and reference for $46 Turning books in for very modest cash takes a while - i prefer to donate to Restore. I popped in here with my 12yr old daughter killing some time in the area. I mainly wanted to inquire about their book buying policy as we have a ton of children's books to purge. 2nd & Charles is similar to a Books-A-Million or Banes & Nobles selling more than just books! Very nostalgic and a place you can definitely get lost in! Upon speaking to a buyback manager he told me that you simply put your items in their totes, they will look them over, then text or email you when your offer is ready. They take everything from books, records, DVD's, CD's, games, toys, collectible action figures, video games, and some electronics. You have the choice or taking a store credit or cash. The one turn off is it's the company policy to NOT tell you before hand what they pay range is for any items. Because of this I'm not sure how much money or even an estimate they buy any of the previously items at. But I'm sure it's worth a try and I will be taking some books in soon. I just hope it's not a waste of time with low ball offers for nearly new items, as I would rather donate them if that's the case. As I browsed around I noticed that their prices for books were on the high side for used books and the new books were the regular cover price as well. Not much in tbt area of discounts. I happened upon this store based on a review I'd read from John on the morning I was to be in Charlotte on business. I am so glad I did. What a cool store this is! It's like Books-a-Million, but so much cooler. Lots of music, vinyl records, guitars, CDs and all of the books you can handle. What I most loved was the little themed groupings of toys, books, and music. I saw Harry Potter, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, etc. I meant to pop in quickly just to check things out, but found out I could have stayed in there for a few hours just looking at everything. As it was, I found a cookbook, some Golden Girl memorabilia, Seinfeld magnets and Tarot cards. I kept most of the stuff for stocking stuffers! I'm headed back over soon to get more, this is a perfect store for the nerd in you! read more

For sellers, this place is great. I cleaned out most of my DVD collection and got more cash than any online buyer would have offered. For buyers, I wouldn't recommend. While waiting on the buyers to look through my stuff, I browsed the books. There is a wide selection, but the prices are high. I expected items to be cheap, but most books are listed at the cover price! Even Target prices their books below the cover price. The only books that I spotted for below cover price were very obviously pre-used (in a bad way) and/or obscure titles/authors. read more

I had passed by this store on the corner of Tyvola and South Blvd many times, but never ventured in. Not until I decided to part ways with the majority of my DVD collection did I have an excuse to visit, but what I found was a store I could have hung out in for hours and hours. 2nd & Charles actually bought all of my DVD's and gave me an option for cash or store credit. I took the store credit and then instantly got lost in the store for a good hour/hour-and-a-half. If the store "buys back" something from you, all you need is your driver's license and the buyer's (depending on the day) will contact you once they are ready to make an offer. There is a TON of stuff here... yes it leans toward nerd culture a bit, but I think in 2019, it's "cool" to be a nerd. As I browsed, there are a ton of books, movie, memorabilia and more. There's even a couple aisles dedicated to Funko POP figures, which is always fun. In the end, I ended up going with two blu-ray movies. I can totally see the appeal of this place and the ability to trade-in books, video games, and other things once you've already consumed the content. While most of my DVDs will end up in a "mystery box". They just have a box of mystery dvds for a set price, I'm glad my movies that I spent years collecting will find a 2nd life (where someone else can enjoy them as much as I did). read more

I buy and sell here a lot (and always do well) and it cracks me up reading these reviews where people complain about the amount they are offered for their used junk. Number one they may already have several copies of what you are trading in, which means they can't often sell whatever junk you brought in so they don't need it. Next thing is, you USED it, it's not new anymore. It's worth less than half of what YOU paid for it. To make money, they have to pay less than half of THAT. Simple math for the simpletons: You buy something for $20, it's only worth $10 used (or less), which means they have to buy it for $3. Use your brains people. Great store. This is one of my most favorite stores in Charlotte! It is basically a nerd paradise. It doesn't even matter what type of nerdy stuff you are into, you will find it here. They have new and used items from books to games to musical instruments. You want to buy a gift for your nerdy friend or family member? This is the place to do it. If you want to find good deals on books they have a huge selection of super cheap books and one day a week (I think Wednesday) they are even cheaper! I do not like to leave negative reviews, especially of businesses I like! That's right, I really love this place, I love the selection, the prices, it's all great. Do NOT use a CREDIT OR DEBIT Card here. They asked at checkout if I would like a "FREE" trial subscription to a few magazines. Having a kid in 1st grade I figured magazines with pictures for things like collages and such wouldn't be a bad idea. Fast forward three months and a mysterious charge shows up on my debit account. TME*2WNRWN*ROLLNGST 855-285-0281 NY. I check it out only to find out that they somehow feel it's justified to automatically charge the same card you used in store for a random magazine subscription three months later. I cannot imagine any instance where I would have approved this. Note to management. Stop this practice immediately. We have enough data breaches and fraud nowadays, I'd prefer it not stem from one of my favorite stores in town. I'll probably be back, but only with a pre-loaded gift card or cash. If you miss Borders or Books-A-Million as much as I do then Second and Charles is a welcome addition to South Boulevard. It has everything: books, movies, comics, musical instruments, memorabilia, candy, stationery, etc. On my first visit I purchased some philosophy and Japanese gummy candy. Somehow I avoided buying a case of Harry Potter butterbeer and a purple ukulele. But this is my new favorite spot to browse so I'll be back again soon! read more

This is the first time I've been in2nd and Charles! Confession... I've seen this stores million times, but never stopped in to find out what it is. Well thankfully today I did as they were offering free McDonalds Pies for Pi Day. Although the pi wasn't a circle their intentions were good lol. But about this store, ok as soon as I walked in it reminded me of an Urban Outfitters {South Park} meets Manifest {South Blvd}, with a large clash of Barnes and Noble {Carolina Place}. The offer a wide variety of books, music, disc records, guitars, and even a great seating area in the back to lounge. I was pleasantly surprised and mad at myself that I've allowed myself to miss out on the gem for so long. Also, they allow buy, sell, trade on merchandise as well. This was probably our worse shopping experience in Gainesville ever. In the past we had done our used book business with privately owned stores and were treated w/ more courtesy and directness. We were mislead about books we wanted that were not in stock. We were told they were available from the warehouse, not telling us we were buying from books a million. We paid more than we would have on Amazon, and had to pay shipping over and above. Granted we should have backed out of doing business with this company, none of it went well for us. We left feeling slimed, badly used, ripped off and BS'd. We won't go back. Ick! read more

Incredibly rude staff. Absolutely worst staff I've ever witnessed at a store in my life. Numerous staff members were following us around telling us the store was closed when it was 8:02... I told them I had one more thing to get and they continued to force me to leave the store because it was past close. Barely. They have a massive amount of books and really I would consider this a book store more than anything else but they also have video games, records, games, and toys. Most of their books are used and priced "fairly" since they are almost in all perfect condition. The layout of the store is easy to use and always clean. The assortment of goodies here is perfect for any child, big or small and you are sure to walk out with something. The video games section isn't nearly as vast as the books but still you are bound to find something. The employees are helpful and always very nice. I like this place. It makes me happy. Full disclaimer: I'm a nerd, through and through. I love books, comics, board games, and a host of vinyl collectibles that I have no business buying anymore (thanks a lot, Funko!). If you're like me, even remotely, check this place out. HUGE selection of merchandise, a lot of it trade-ins, which makes for a perfect afternoon distraction when you have some dollars to burn. Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, and everything in between... half the fun is roaming the aisles to see what you find. Literally spent an hour just browsing retro game systems (and knock-offs; gotta love capitalism and fluid copyright protection). But the selection of books was unexpected... this place is like a mad hybrid of Gamestop and Barnes & Nobles (they even have some exclusive merch), and I loved every inch of it. Staff was super friendly and eager to help. Next time I'm in town, I'll definitely come back to burn some cash. read more

There is too much stock for the sales floor, which makes the space feel tight; and the shelves look awful, as books are always in the wrong sections, or mixed in with other genres, or the books are just falling over. But my friend told me that he loves it, I wanted to sell some DVDs, and you know I'm curious about things I know nothing about... so I went to check it out. For us. The people that work here are SO FRIENDLY. They're helpful, clever and pretty great to talk to. I went in the first time just to wander around and see what it was about. It's like FYE - remember those stores in the mall? I was never cool enough to go in there, haha. I know you're suprised. Anyway, 2nd & Charles sells t-shirts, CDs, DVDs, books, board games, video games, comic books and those little comic character figures where their head is too big. They sell a little bit of everything, and they buy a little bit of everything! On my second time in here, I carried a box of DVDs that I wanted to sell. They don't need appointments, and are more than happy to help you. Go to the counter on the right, wait in line, and they'll tell you how long it will be to give you a payout number. They either offer cash or store credit. The store credit offer will be about double of the cash offer. They have a little sign that states what they're always looking for, which is helpful, and a free bin outside that you can "donate" your stuff to. I'll go in here again to sell, I am rarely looking for the things that they sell, but I do have a lot of DVDs and books. read more

First, talk about finding something for any person you might know! They have all kinds of knick knacks, collectibles and inventory as far as the eye can see. Some stuff is decently priced, but if you are coming here looking for deals on collectibles...you can forget about it. Classic collectible games, consoles, comics...top dollar prices! If you have about 6 hours to kill, you can rifle through the boxes upon boxes of comics and see if they missed something....but it most likely wont be worth it...cuz the good stuff is in the binders and overpriced. Records, they have plenty of those too! Want a classic or popular one...get ready for a top dollar sticker! One of the best used bookstores I have visited. Earlier in the day, I had been at a Barnes & Noble and spent $60 on three books and a magazine. If only I had waited, I would have saved myself about half that amount and gotten more books. My son and his girl friend brought me here to browse and see what I could find. Besides books, there are games, cds, musical instruments and more items for purchase. The books titles are organized by subject (YA, bio, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, etc.) and by author on the shelves. I am a sci-fi/ fantasy fan and I was surprised of the titles available. They weren't the newest titles but if one is reading a series, it is better to pay a lower price on the older titles. The condition of the five books I purchased was like they were brand new. In the short time, I was here, I was impressed by their children's section. Lots of titles on many subjects. I am from out of the area, but would be a regular customer if I lived in Charlotte. read more

Manifest down the road offered me 4 times as much for my old cd's than 2nd&Charles. I sold a recent, popular hardback and 4 cd's to 2nd and Charles and they offered me either $3.60 in store credit or $1.60 in cash. Really? I took the same items to Manifest, down the road, and they purchased more of my items and gave me $18.60 in cash. 2nd&Charles is big, pretty and cleaner looking that Manifest, but it's a bit too sterile for my tastes. so the items they have are good but the prices are decent, some things overpriced. my main problem is the pricing for selling . they will legit give u like $3 for something that costs $25. they need to do more research cause they keep defending their price matching even tho it's horrible. I tried to sell a stack of kpop albums and they gave me $30 when each one is like 15-$30 each by themselves. even one used album with little to no inclusions are like minimum $10 each. Wow. I called a about selling something and brought it in to sell. I see they also buy CDs and books, so after I give her the items that I really wanted to sell, I went to my car and brought some CDs and books in. The girl buying my items says she can't take certain items which is fine, but the one item that I called about and handed to her first saying I wanted to sell, she said that she couldn't buy. Reason being is that the Apple Product had a frayed charging cable and she didn't look at it due to the time constraints. I said this is the only thing that I wanted to sell and is the first item that I gave you. She started saying she needed to check it out and test it and all these excuses. It had the box and even the protective plastic wrapping and all of the packaging, was obviously in good condition minus the stupid Apple changing cable. Millions of excuses and then she started talking about people calling in about books and consoles. I said this isn't either of those, then she finally said that she didn't see that item right away. It was the first item that I gave her that she had to look at. So she talked in circles and kept making up obvious excuses. LAME. Make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing or they won't buy or even look at your items and if they do they'll give you spare change. read more
