I absolutely adore 2nd & Charles. It's honestly the closest thing to a treasure trove for books, toys, and music. They have a great selection of both new and used books at really affordable prices. Plus, they usually have multiple copies of the same book with varying price tags. I visited recently and managed to snag 9 books for about $100. Given that new books typically cost between $15-25, it was definitely a steal. Note: I only buy books from here & nothing else. I bought some new books and some used books. The used ones were in great condition, they looked almost brand new. There were no marks, smudges, tears, or anything that made the book seem used. Very disappointed last visit. Store seems to be going downhill and the prices going up for used books?

I've been coming to this store for a few years now and had I not tried to sell movies and collectible figures to them this past summer, my rating would have been 5 stars because of how much cool stuff they have crammed into one store. Now that I'm trying to budget better and not spend as much in fun stores like this, my past few trips there either end with me purchasing nothing or just getting little things. In the future if I see something I really want there I'll probably stand in the store and check to see if I can find the items cheaper online. I feel like I have a right to be that extremely picky as a customer if they have a right to be that picky as a store that buys back from the customers. I went in with 2 collectible figures, one worth $50 and one worth $10 (I bought them from 2&C over the last few years but wanted to sell ones that meant the least amount to me so I could make room for ones I wanted more), and took in a stack of about 12 movies for them to assess and offer me a buyback price for. I'm not sure what I was expecting when it came to the movies (some of which were Blu-ray) but it definitely wasn't that they'd buy them for literal pennies. The regular DVDs were claimed to be worth 50c and Blu-rays worth $1. They offered to buy the figures for 1/5 what the store sold them for before, which is what they'd immediately sell them for again once out on the floor. Being offered $15 store credit or $10 cash for items worth $60+ rubbed me the wrong way. It would be one thing if I'd bought them elsewhere and had some guessed price in mind on how much stuff was worth, but the physical 2&C stickers are still on my collectibles and I don't have to play the guessing game. So... it frustrates me as a customer to experience this imbalance. Don't sell things to us for over 5x what you'd pay for them ESPECIALLY if they're secondhand stuff. read more

I love this store! They have literally anything you can think of even though they're a "book" store they have clothes, Pop figures, video games, retro stuff and so much more. I love how they have the book separated and labeled so they're easy to find. I am sad that this is the closest location to me and I do wish they had one near lower Chesterfield but this store is worth the drive. Secondhand stuff is pretty cheap here even in good condition which is awesome for someone trying to complete collections or even just not wanting expensive books. There is something here for literally anyone! If you cant find a book or something you are looking for, go up to the counter and the staff is super helpful, have helped me find things many times. read more

Dropped off a $400 guitar to trade in...had to stand there and wait 2 hrs for their offer.... which was $20. So I will say this 2nd & Charles could be a good store if they didn't cheat customers out so I took in a statue that I know is worth $70 or so bucks which they only gave me $10 cash $30 credit which I didn't care much for a statue since I didn't pay much for it so I took credit and a week or so later I walked back into the store and noticed they had it on display for $150 which I thought to myself wow they truly have done nothing but cheat alot of people out if things with well worth value selection for items are well but they mark thing well above retail or over price them to try to make a dollar which it's sad to see businesses do that to people who want these items to have for there own read more

BEWARE OF BUYING USED ELECTRONIC ITEMS!!! I recently purchased a used guitar hero controller for the Wii. Go home to realize it doesn't work. Upon further inspection, the cords on the inside appear to look as if they had been gnawed through, to the point of the controller being defective. I call and get the generic "it can't be proven it was like that when purchased." Can't return with receipt and sticker still on it. Nothing can be done. Boom just like that, screwed out of $30. Their department that does buy back doesn't seem to know what to look for, or they don't test items for defectives. Scammed out of $30, poor customer service. I love 2nd &Charles! Unfortunately this location is not as wonderful as it's sister location on Broad street. The layout of this location doesn't make sense. The kids area is not defined you just kind of wonder upon it and try to figure it out. This location is also much smaller than the other location. While I'm happy that the brand has expanded I doubt I'll return to this location. read more

They had it here but for 5X what l could purchase it for at Goodwill. Maybe for something brand new it could be ok. But I will pass on the books from here. First time here, and I loved my experience here. They had lots of stuff like comics,books,manga,toys,collectibles,guitars, and etc. I was astonished when I walked in and saw the things in the store. This was my first time walking in this store after passing it all these years. I bought a record player after the Black Friday melee at a major store in the same shopping center. After doing some googling of "record store shops near me", 2nd & Charles popped up. I figured let me see what this is about before I go to another local on in RVA or back north when I go home. This store a pretty big for everything it carries. You need to have time and patience to look through the vast collection. I even had my mom digging through some of the record crates. Some of the more popular artists whose albums were in good to excellent condition were a little over priced for my budget but I was able to walk away with 5 albums, spending $18. I will definitely visit again when I come visit my mom and/or if I find a location close to my home. read more

Okay so we discovered this store and thought great what a cool,place to check out and also get rid of stuff we didn't want well that's a about where it ends for us. We dropped off a ton of stuff now I understand businesses need to make money but with what we took them they gave us a whole 37.00 now if we had wanted a store credit we would have 60.00 but we didn't see anything there we would want to buy so we chose the cash. We are disappointed that it was really a waste of time to go there I wish we had just kept the stuff I could have sold it at a yard sale for more. Lesson learned.. read more

Waste of time! Just tried to sell seasons 1 through 4 of house of cards and seasons 1 through 5 of game of thrones. Easily 250 retail worth of only watched once materials. The grumpy elderly woman offered me 10 bucks! I though she was saying a 10 a piece! Nope the whole pile of DVD s and blue rays! I told the grouchy lady that she had season 5 of game of thrones on the shelf right now for 49.95. She smirked and said its not worth that much. They really get you coming and going at this place! Holy crap, this place is huge and filled with great stuff: used books, comic books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl, instruments, etc. I was seriously overwhelmed by the selection and will have to return many times in order to sift through the inventory. I hate paying full price for kids movies/books when their tastes change so quickly. I hit the jackpot at this store. The books are arranged in alphabetical order by author with giant letter separators which make it easy search for specific books. Movies are in alpha order. They also have great, little gifts at the front of the store (not used). I found a LCD R2D2 watch, a ton of Harry Potter stocking stuffers, socks, totes etc. We took in a bag of books which were all in excellent condition and got $10, so you aren't going to get a ton of credit here, but otherwise I would be hauling them to Goodwill and receive nothing, so there is the trade-off. You are allowed to bring in up to 3 tubs (those white containers you see at the post office) per day. They calculate the credit, send you a text while you look around and you pick up your credit. Their system is pretty seamless and easy. Your driver's license is your ID, so you don't have to carry around another card on your keychain. Definitely check this place out. Used DVDs are about $5. Most books I found were cheaper than that. read more

They take a lot, their shop is cool but you get more if you accept store credit. Came in to sell a bunch of books. He did a preliminary scan to see if the titles were buyable. Then they take 30min or so to process your box. They may still have to send the books back to you but its still pretty quick. They will give you cash for tons of things! read more

This place is amazeballs! 8 year old me loves the huge selection of old school video games (Atari, Nintendo, SNES, Genesis) and comic books, 16 year old me loves the newer video games/consoles (PSX, XBOX) and CDs, 24 year old me loves the large selection of vinyl (yes, VINYL!) and movies, and 32 year old me loves the books and collectibles -- all at amazing second-hand store prices!!! My only complaint is that the store is MASSIVE, and since stock is literally changing by the hour, it's hit or miss if you can find what you are looking for, even if it is supposed to be in stock. Also, pricing, while almost guaranteed to be cheaper than new (except in the cases of the most rare items), can be inconsistent -- I saw several of the same item with different prices). That said, if you are a unicorn hunter, this is precisely the store for you! I could easily spend hours in this store, and do so every weekend...and probably will considering that each time you go, there is no telling what you might find. read more

This place has a little bit of something for everyone's favorite hobbies. Walking in, you'll immediately notice a large amount of video games and associated memorabilia near the front right. There is also a large amount of stock dedicated to teen/quirky fandoms along the lines of Disney, Japanese manga, Harry Potter, Twilight, etc. Another large section consists of new/used books, music, and movies. There is a wealth of material for every age group. The main thing holding this chain back is the name. I've seen the stores in the area for several years now, but never ventured inside until last month because I never knew what they sold. I did find some good mangas in there that were pretty cheap and quite rare. They have a lot of good items that are not books that are anime based. They are quite expensive on their items though. Forget about the buyback program because they give you less than a dollar per book. I am not selling my manga for less than a dollar each. I'll sell it on eBay for way more. The store representative knocked me over with the cart they were pushing full of books and did not even apologize. On top of that I went to one of the carts that had books on it and pulled the first one out and every single one of them fell on me and not a one person that was standing around tried to help me. We are talking over a hundred books and I ended up spraining my ankle over this. Now considering I am disabled and have to walk with a cane you would think that the employees would care but no they certainly did not. One just saw and walked away like I'm not dealing with this. I'm not the type of person that goes around sue happy. I just don't think that's right but I don't think it's right either that the employees here ignore people with disabilities. If you see somebody on the floor with a hundred books laying on top of them would you not help them? It's only the right thing to do for god sakes. It's like these people have no morals. I asked for the manager and told him what had happened on both occasions when I was in the store and I was limping on top of that cuz it was my bad leg that was sprained and he offered no ambulance or medical treatment or anything. No apology just okay we can give you 10% off. I said I don't want your 10% off I want an apology. Never got one. I will never go in there again because of this. I think it's a shame because they do have some good things but I would rather go across town to the other one that has way better employees than this one. read more

Sometimes they have an outdoor area set up with bins and boxes of things on top of tables. Don't waste your time there. However: inside the store you can totally luck out on bargains for used video games and consoles, DVD and Blu Ray. Used music gear is usually over priced in there, but worth checking on anyways. This place is a bookworm's heaven! They sell new and used books of all genres, comic books, DVDs, Blu-rays, and other neat knick knacks that could possibly complete a collection. I mainly enjoy shopping for books here, but they also have a wide selection of vinyl. To me, the vinyl is a bit overpriced, but the genres of music they bring in are excellent. For books, you can get a pretty decent haul if you are on a budget, and can also sell your used books for store credit or cash. I would definitely recommend this place if you love to read. read more

I love this store!!! I have completed several series of books because of this place. I can find new games for my DS here and most of all its just fun looking through all the books. Yes I have a tablet, yes I have a nook, kindle, and library app on my tablet; however, there is just something about holding a book and turning the pages of that book that is calming and serene. This store has so much inventory of games, vinyl, movies, toys, and books. It would take you days to really see it all. Of course then you would have to go back and start over because well the inventory changed again LOL. I try to get to this store as often as I can. read more

I have been here (and Broad St.) a bunch, I have bought, I have sold, I have suggested. I have to say I have concluded they are just stupid predators, trying to get millennials to give away their treasures, and then come here for a 'date night'. Selling I have sold CD's, books, LPs, and Laserdiscs. I have never been offered a itemized receipt. But for the ones they wanted, the average for books, LPs, and CD's has been $1 each, and for the LD's $.75. I have often seen free books (unbought, left by 'sellers') in the provided bins that matched books they had on the shelf. I have tried to leave the buyers a list of things I wanted, and would appreciate a call or text - can't do that - too common sense. Buying, or trying to buy Apparently there is not a librarian in the bunch. For instance, I look at Ian Fleming a lot. He could fit into about 3 of their categories. Mystery, adventure, or kids - ask and they will list the categories it might be in, they don't know because they do know their categories overlap terribly. My wife was looking for "Hidden Figures" (the space computing ladies, became a movie) and the staff named about 10 categories it might be in - Movies, Science, Feminist, Modern History, Math or some others - and it ended being in African-American Studies. Comedian DVD's are filed under show name in the main DVD group as though a movie - some folks just might know Raw and Delirious, but wouldn't you look first under Murphy, Eddie like a normal person would has been to school in America? Comics and graphics novels are a very complicated business - writers get good under a small label, go independent, and then get gobbled up by bigger players in time for the movie rights. They have just given up on all this. For reasons I don't understand, X-Files text-only books are filed in graphic novels, I guess because they have an IDW at the bottom. It took this stores years to understand alphabetizing the shelves. And like those comedy concerts, they don't seem to have anyone who is allowed to care how things are indexed - they do it the corporate way and shut up and move on. Categories are so broad, even when they recognize a title, they can only list the many places it might be. I have asked for years why I can't look from home at there 'stock' - maybe I could make a list of filing locations - they can't allow that. But they can, for a return, by a hidden-from-public policy, demand a phone number, and then index that to an outside database to compare driver license address - all without ever checking the id to or on the credit card. They do have a published, warm and friendly, we're-old-friends returns policy with no mention of data exchange. Anyway, they are trying to "big box" the used book, cd and new and used comic business away from our locals. Plan 9 is still there on Cary, The Book Exchange just further out on Midlothian, and the local comics are gone, some (Velocity) are on Broad St. But at least these are folks who can help you find a book or CD because they understand their system that they designed, and love their work. read more

My family and I love this store! Had no idea what it was when it opened, but now can't stay out of there! It has something for all of us....Old school games and vinyl for my husband, new games and collectible toys/action figures for my son, comics for both of them and tons of books for me! I love that they have new and used books for both adults and kids. My 8 year old loves reading and is at the stage that he likes reading the same book a couple of times, but his tastes are constantly changing. I went in to 2nd and Charles a few weeks ago and got him 13 used books for a total of about $20! That was a great bargain and better than you will find at any library book sale or even Goodwill. The staff is super friendly. There's always someone within grabbing distance if you need them to help you look for things and the cashiers are awesome. One tip is to bring your own bag because they don't have any. When you shop like I do, you need bags! I don't mind that they don't have them....I just bring my own reusable ones. read more

Honestly, my dad never takes me here, but when I first visited this place, I never really took in to much of the atmosphere in this store. Especially the retro game section. Overall, this store is a fantastic place for any type of person.
