Had a visit to Ashland decided to try the restaurant. And glad we did Great corner place and atmosphere was enjoyable We were there at lunch. Had a whitefish sandwich and a salad. Each of us also had the soup of the day. The soup was tremendous. Whitefish was so well done. Nice size bun to not overwhelm the fish. To top it off we splurged and split a berry crisp with ice cream on it. Just fantastic. Side note lemonade and fresh tea were very nice as well. Check the hours before you go. No weekends. Found the service very friendly. We'll be back. New favorite in Ashland. read more

Passing through around lunch time. Searched restaurants in Ashland. Based on previous reviews I choose 2nd Street Bistro. I'm so happy I did. I had their Heirloom tomato plate special and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich. Both were very delicious!Would highly recommend! I am so thankful we picked this place for lunch. It's comfortable casual decor, but the food is what really grabs the attention. I had a cup of the fish chowder along with the recommended seasonal tomato and mozzarella appetizer. My husband had a salad with whitefish on top. I was licking the bowl & the plate, savoring each bite. I'm guessing our waiter was the owner and his recommendations were really helpful. We were very disappointed. What was available did not match the online menu. A several things listed on the menu provided in house were not available. There was a statement under the fish section which said no additions or omissions. That meant the steak sandwich came only with a vege mixture plus Gorgonzola cheese. I asked if I could have it plain. No. So I ordered a steak dinner which was a good roast beef dinner, not steak. The dinner was tasty but not what I wanted. I don't want to go back. read more

Went here two summers in a row, as I visit in the summer annually. Was yelled at as soon as my date and I walked in. "Stop there" front the back of the restaurant by the same female both of the past two years. There were probably 3-4 tables/booths (maybe 12 customer) the second time and we were told they're too busy for two more people. It was 7:00 PM... The host is very rude and really doesn't want any business. I feel for the owner who I've spoken to over the years and seems like a very friendly person. I had reservations for my wife and I. The lady wrote the wrong time down. When we arrived we were screamed at from the back of the restaurant to "WAIT THERE". The lady then sat us and ordered for us before we even sat because I asked about the white fish. Then we wanted a margarita and she said she's too busy to make one. There were 8 other guests in the entire restaurant. After being yelled at, ordered for before we sat and looked at the menu, denied drinks we wanted, and just plainly being rushed, we decided to just leave. An unexpected gem!! We had the wild mushroom bruschetta and whitefish dinner. Both were bursting with flavor! The fish was just a few hours out of the water and was cooked perfectly, served with Israeli couscous--a great combination! Everything about the bruschetta was delicious: the baguette, the shaved parmesan and the mushrooms lightly cooked with sherry which gave a great balance. What a hidden gem! We stopped for lunch and were so pleasantly surprised with the amazing food. The whitefish chowder, duck wontons and burgers were fantastic. Owner met me at the door. All the ingredients are local and fresh! I had the Lake Superior fish sandwich, oh boy was it delicious! Capers in tartar sauce made it sublime. French fries were cut and fries to order, hot, salty perfection. Topped it off with a Porter on tap and could not have asked for more. Next time I'm up North, I'm definitely stopping here again! As you walk in you'll notice that the place has an intimate character of it's own, a personality of a homey cafe bistro. There was a fully stocked bar to get what your heart desires. When I looked at the menu, I knew it was going to be good. They had a special that night and it was the prime rib. That was the best prime rib that I had ever had. I was so fortunate to get the last prime rib that they had left because I don't know what my life would be like right now without ever tasting it's succulent deliciousness. Then the moment did arrive and I was graced with its presence. The prime rib was huge! It was massive! It was a behemoth! It was cooked to perfection! It was so juicy and tender! The meat had a slight sweetness to it. The potatoes on the side were cooked to to crispy golden brown works of art. I could not be more satisfied. Any one who comes to Ashland, WI and doesn't dine at 2nd Street Bistro is making a serious mistake. My husband and I just had dinner there two nights in a row and if we weren't leaving the area it would be three nights! The food is scrumptious, the space inviting with great music playing at a very appropriate level, and the service was impeccable. Gina took such good care of us and was full of info about the area. Don't miss this gem serving all homemade, fresh dishes with whitefish right out of the bay. We are so happy we found 2nd Street. Passing through Ashland? Stop here! My husband, son, and I stopped here for a quick meal en route to Minnesota. Wow! What a pleasant surprise! There was a harpist playing, extremely friendly and competent service (thank you, Annie), and a wonderful menu. My husband and son ordered burgers and I had a chicken Caesar salad and a cup of soup, whitefish chowder. The chowder was rick and flavorful.The sweet potato fries and hand cut fries that came with the burgers were "frickin amazing." Our meals may sound tame...I assume you the remainder of the menu was outstanding. If we had been staying in town longer, I would have ordered the whitefish. Everything sounded great. We had a poor reception as we entered this establishment. Server sat us in a booth and immediately stated that there was only one tab per table and they wouldn't take our order for 45-60 minutes. She was rude and made us feel like we weren't worth her time. The place only had a few other tables full with lots of empty tables. Can not speak to the quality of their cuisine and prices because we were never given a menu to review. Needless to say, we didn't stay to find out. read more

I was looking for a quick bite to eat and always prefer to pass up the local fast food and chain places, so I went to Yelp to find me a place. 2nd Street Bistro came up and I remember driving past it. It is a nice and small place with some booths and a little bar. I liked the atmosphere. The service was pleasant and the pulled pork sandwich was messy but delicious. The prices were average for the area and you get good portion of food for the price. I would come back here again, and I suggest you try it out over the plethora of typical chain and fast food businesses scattered around the area. read more

Driving through on the way to hike around MI UP and we stumbled across this place that stood out in contrast to the home-style places in Ashland. We each had a pasta dish, my gnocchi were light and definitely handmade which was fantastic, the rose sauce was on point, but the sausage was too far over cooked and nearly beyond redemption. The shroomin ravs in sherry butter sauce were also on point, one of the better pasta dishes I've had anywhere. The star, though, was the loosely-termed bruschetta with mushrooms. The ratio of bread/topping needs work as we ended up eating by fork a lot of sautéed mushrooms. It was a good problem to have, but two more toast points and the whole app experience elevates to another level. The atmosphere was great, dim, low-key and a harpist in the background. One notable inconsistency was a booth occupied by employees laughing and complaining (as we do) too close to earshot of the patrons. Honestly, the food is good enough to overlook that problem, but something I'd want fixed if it were my bottom-line on the line. read more

However, I went in the evening they were out of the special so ordered 2 steak sandwiches and it took an 1 hr and 25 mins with 11 guests in the entire place. Talked with husband of couple who own / run the quaint eclectic eatery: all but very little of their menu is made in house, created with care and it tastes it. We have had the vast majority of Friday fish fry's in the bay area and this meal was exemplary! Our cod was seasoned and fried perfectly, the sides were unique plays on the traditional lineup. (The slaw was comprised of shredded kale, brussels, beets, and carrots). We were also treated to a live harpist while we ate.
