Came here for a Lental Friday Fish Fry while traveling to Ashland for Book Across the Bay. Wanted a fish fry for Lent & it did not disappoint. The beer selections were good local beers with only be $6 a pint, very reasonable. My girlfriend got the beer battered & it looked amazing. I was craving something blackened or Cajun & loved my decision. Many places will give the non fried fish choices much smaller pieces but here they did not do this. For $20 it was right on point from a price perspective compared to most Wisconsin places nowadays. Also sweet potato fries not being extra was great. Great indoor decor atmosphere. Second visit to Deep Water Grill. Actually last time we went to The Alley We both had the whitefish sandwich one breaded and one Cajun grilled. Both were really well done. I could have used a bit more spice on my Cajun grilled. Very good portions. Had a side salad that was also well done. Generous amount of waffle fries. Nice wine for a house Chardonnay. I have been here 3 times in 3 weeks if that tells you anything!! The food is GOOD!! The first time, I got the 3 cheese macaroni n cheese and asked them to add crispy chicken on, which they did. I don't think I've ever tasted anything so delicious! The 2nd time, it took them about 20 minutes to acknowledge me sitting at the bar because they were crazy busy l. But eventually I did get to order and had the Thai chicken wrap - also amazing. The 3rd time I went back for more chicken & macaroni and it was a hit again. There are usually fun people to talk to in this bar, I anticipate many more visits. They are attached to the Alley which has a roof to sit on, and they have a game room downstairs that's adults only after 10 so that is also nice. read more

Great find while up north. Never in the area before but I'd return just to eat again at this restaurant! The spinach artichoke dip with fresh veggies was the best I ever had. Had the special, Cajun whitefish with wild rice and asparagus! Cleaned the plate!! Our waitress Hywa was the best! She write us a little thank you card. Good beers on tap. We got cheese curds, beer cheese, fish sandwiches, and hot chicken. Portions were huge. Service was very snappy. The restaurant was significantly more quiet than a typical restaurant without music and proper sound dampening. Good place to take a family or friends to catch up with. Maybe too quiet for the type of person who wants music on 24/7. The only criticism is that the fish sandwich had too high of a bread to fish ratio. I solved my wife's problem by taking her sandwich bread and dipping it in a cup of beer cheese. read more

Awful experience from start to finish. Table of 11 and we were asked to quiet ourselves at three points, despite us being polite and respectful. We requested our checks and were held hostage for 30+ minutes waiting for management to take payment. They held onto our cards ad infinitum with no response. I came here with my family of 5 and a friend's family of 7 for lunch at noon on a Wednesday. The hostess asked if we had a reservation, we did not, but it only took her a couple minutes to place us in the back booth - two tables, one large booth. The service we had was very good! All the kids got kids meals, and I was surprised by how large they were. The adult portions were a good size also. The food was good, but not amazing. I appreciated that you could get sweet potato fries with a sandwich order, and it wasn't an upcharge. My boyfriend got the fish tacos- excellent- I got the smoked turkey wrap and cup of clam chowder was very good! I tried an island martini and he had the Burberry mojito both were very good! This is one of my favorite restaurants; the food is always excellent, staff is friendly and on the ball, and the atmosphere is fabulous. It never disappoints. Today I had the grilled Cajun whitefish, absolutely perfect sweet potato fries, and to top it all off we ordered the chocolate volcano cake, which came with a fruit salsa, and delicious ice cream --a stunning presentation! Good Spot For A Feeding! Well it happened again... We got hungry while out and about... It seems to happen often. It was getting late as we finally neared our destination and not many places were open so we got excited when we found this place. After all, an empty stomach doesn't care what time it is... Drove up to Ashland to enjoy a beautiful day and discovered this gem of a restaurant. Very nice atmosphere, comfortable seating, fast and friendly service, and the food was delicious! We stopped in for dinner while passing through on a road trip. There was plenty of seating, and the staff was very busy, but pleasant. We didn't have to wait for a table at all. I ordered the scallops (pictured) with the wild rice and vegetables. I'd have liked more squash and carrots in the vegetables (only got one piece of each) and less cauliflower, but everything was very good. My scallops were just a tiny, slight bit under, but they tasted very fresh so that didn't bother me at all. We also had the bagel dip appetizer, which is not pictured because it was so good that we ate it before we thought to take a picture. I'm not sure what was in it, but it was pretty much addictive. The only issue that I had was that the salt shaker was set to pour very fast, and I ended up with a pile of salt on some of my food. Overall, a great meal. read more

Between 3 and 4 stars but wanted to be generous. My in-laws have been coming here for years when they're in town. Yesterday mom and I ordered a salad to share and two cups of soup. Soup was ok but the popcorn served with it (cute idea!) was stale. The salad we ordered had the option to add chicken (I believe it was a $6 up-charge). We asked if we could do fish instead. The server said, "no problem," and the salad was good. However, without saying a word, we were charged $12 for that piece of whitefish! The salmon salad above on the menu would've cost $6 less! Even though it was good, $26 for a lunch salad is insane. I wish there had been some sort of communication on this. I'd have politely declined or at minimum, I would've approached this in person at checkout if I had seen it then. Stopped here for dinner on the way to Bayfield, and choose it because Yelp said it was kid friendly. It did not disappoint. Our server brought out kid coloring menus with a variety of choices for the kids meals. I was happy to see there were vegetarian options and I choose a bean burger for my meal. Stopped in here again and asked my friends what their recommendations were. It was AWESOME! The stuffed mushrooms were amazing, and I now want to figure out how to make some at home. The cajun whitefish was so much better than what I had last time. I sat at the middle bar with a friend and our server was awesome. Friendly, personable, and knew my friend by her first name. We were in Ashland and we were hungry, so of course, I turned to Yelp to find an option. The word "brewery" and four stars meant that we made a beeline for the Deep Water Grille. The brewery itself was fun -- as you might expect, there's a nautical theme and a little bit of touristy kitsch, but not really in a bad way. We took the opportunity to fill in those in our party who were not familiar with the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald over lunch, so at least it was a talking point. The beer was pretty decent. Our party as a whole sampled four or five of them. There was nothing mindblowing, but everything we ordered was crisp, fresh and pretty tasty. Our food was average to good. I got a cheeseburger, which was fine and came with some pretty tasty fries. My husband got the whitefish sandwich, which was humongous and was reported to be good. We got an order of wings for the table and found those to be really good, nice and big, served in a huge bowl and with a big bowl of homemade bleu cheese to go with it. We seriously had to stop someone we were with (who shall remain nameless) from licking the bowl. They really should bottle and sell the stuff. Delicious. We splurged and got dessert and found the creme brulee to be good, though I will say the layer of sugar was a bit on the thick side. Don't worry -- we managed to cope. Our server was friendly and very on point, handling our party of six with three separate checks with ease. Next time we're in town, I would say it's highly likely we'll be back. read more
