My kiddos absolutely love this restaurant and the trains delivering our food! We also appreciate that their menu has kid friendly food with grass-fed beef burgers and hotdogs. My husband and I like their burgers, egg salad sandwich, and blt. The waitresses are always friendly, and we try visiting on our kiddos' birthdays (they send out a free kid's meal voucher around their bdays for the Bartlett and Des Plaines locations). Also, we are thankful that the music isn't too loud (we found out the hard way that it can be overwhelming for our kiddos), and we love their festive holiday decorations :) read more

The place is the cutest! We came here for my son's first birthday and he loved it. It's perfect for kids. It's like a diner. Smaller menu but good! The service was great. Bathrooms were clean. I don't even want to give one star... We arrived at the restaurant at 12:30 on a Tuesday. We had 4 adults, 4 teenagers and 2 toddlers. Right away I spotted 2 booths back to back. We were all there to celebrate our granddaughters 4th birthday. I asked the server that greeted us if we could sit at the 2 booths but she right away told us that they needed to keep one open for other people at that time I told her WE were other people and we were there. Hindsight I should have let the teens check in separately. My grandson even approached me and said they wanted to just leave and go to another restaurant but my son was upset as we were there to celebrate his daughter. Anytime we have eaten there it has always been open seating. She told us that some of us had to sit at the counter. It was extremely uncomfortable for us all as we couldn't figure out why she wouldn't let us sit at the booths. Our 4 teen grands & the birthday girl sat at the counter. It was the entire length of the counter so the teens that were in the 3rd 4th & 5th seat were totally disconnected from our party. 5 min in another family came in and sat in the booth behind us. The server finally came to take our drink orders after 10 min then when she delivered our drinks the ones that ordered a shake did not get their spoon or straw. She came to me and just dropped a handful of straws and spoons then walked away. The ones seated at the counter far from me had to be passed all the way to them when she could have easily delivered them. After finally ordering, another booth across from us opened and I asked the server if the counter kids could move but she said they were fine at the counter. I explained they were unable to talk to each other and she rolled her eyes at us. Our entire bill was $204.50. I have never paid so much money to be so upset in my life and I have never felt compelled to write a bad review ever! Good yes. Bad NO. When I got home I called to talk to the manager who was on duty and saw the whole situation unfold. He chose to ignore / not step in to assist his customers. I told him if it was his mandate to tell people they couldn't have 2 booths then he as the manager needed to step in. I also told him I had never seen the restaurant so busy yayyy him but pretty much after we arrived it started clearing out so they definitely could have accommodated our request. He was as ineffective on the phone as he was at the time of our visit. Also, one of our teens said that her fries tasted like soap and my burger had a big chunk of meat missing. We had lunch at 2 Toots Train Whistle Grill and were blown away by the experience - A+! Despite having received less-than-stellar recommendations from a few friends and family members we decided it was time to give this place a try. I have been to an identical-themed place when I was a kid (no idea as to the name or location) and I remember having a great time. We arrived just before the lunch rush and snagged a seat at the bar - exactly where the action is! They have an indoor stroller parking area and booster seats available to strap onto the stools so no need to bring your own. Sitting at the counter provides the kids a up-close view of the trains as they circle around and deliver food. What's great about this is that it keeps them occupied and focused while they munch, no need to entertain! What's even better, however, is the food. Again, we were cautioned that it isn't very good but we found the exact opposite - the food is great! Not only are the burgers and hot dogs grass fed beef but they are of generous size and taste delicious! We had a cheeseburger, a double cheeseburger, a bowl of chili, kid's chicken nuggets, fries, and a strawberry shake and everything was top notch. The flavor explosions on my tongue have been unrivaled recently and the portion sizes are rather substantial. We even saw a guy next to us get the hot dog and it is truly a jumbo! To top it off, the staff is very friendly and accommodating from when you walk in the door to when you pay your bill. They genuinely seem to have you and your meal front-of-mind, they want to ensure you have a pleasant experience. If you want a meal with entertainment provided and a classic burger/hot dog and fries then I highly recommend 2Toots. We had an awesome experience here with my 2 1/2 year old. He went crazy watching the trains. Our waitress was amazing. She interacted with our child throughout our visit. At one point the train that delivers food stopped working. A man came and put a new engine on and got it up and running immediately. He also was so kind to our little guy. Food was good as well. The kids love this place and we've been coming here for a couple of years. Service is a hit or miss. We've had some really great servers, who are attentive and enthusiastic and some sub par ones who seem so oblivious, you wonder if they know if they're at work. We just went a few days ago, and unfortunately the service was meh... When we originally arrived, we were one of 4 families yet it took a bit for the server to even take our drink order, even though there were 2 servers. As the night went on, our server would sometimes take 10 mins or so after sitting a family to get their orders in. She would stand at the register looking busy but was never really doing anything. She never once offered to fill our waters or the kids milks. At the end, I was sharing my water with my husband and kids. Food is good. We love the fact they offer grass fed burgers and hot dogs. Had the grass fed chili for the first time and it too was good. It could've used a bit more spice/flavor, but it was still good. Tip- join the Birthday Club. The waitresses were fine; however, the owner/cook appeared and acted like he would rather be anywhere except there. An older man with a gray ponytail, not friendly and missing a smile. There were a total of 9 of us (5 kids) and the 2nd correct bill was $158.00. When my wife entered the restaurant she asked our group where was one of the kids in a concerned tone. She was of course by the gumball machine out of sight. He looked at her and with his arms flapping downward he was motioning her to calm down. No words, no concerned look, just a scowl. The food was ok, tasted marginal. I regret not saying something to him then and there, but the kids like the trains and I didn't want to ruin their anticipation. So 2 Toots (Bartlett) is an expensive locale to have a train deliver your not so tasty food, with nice waitresses and a rude, unfriendly owner who is not capable of asking how you liked the service etc. Very disappointing. read more

This spot is doable if you have kids. My nephew is obsessed with trains, so he loves coming here. They just recently re-opened for dine-in if I am not mistaken. The food is average and based on portion and flavor/taste of the food it is slightly on the pricier side. However, as mentioned before the entertainment value for the kids makes it more worthwhile. The host was welcoming and the waitress was friendly and attentive. They also have a slow-moving mechanical horse, so be ready to spend some of your quarters! read more

My better half and I visited 2 Toots Train Whistle Restaurant this past Tuesday night. The occasion was a granddaughter's third birthday. We came in from Aurora, the birthday girls parents came in from Hanover Park and the other grandparents came in from Rolling Meadows. It seems the birthday girl had a good experience at 2 Toots once before. It was a wonderful selection. The restaurant was very clean, and the food perfect. Hamburgers are grass fed beef and they use no seasoning. Imagine that? Hamburgers with no salt or pepper and the taste is wonderful. The staff is exceptional. Manager Juan fit us perfectly around a corner so we could get time with the 3 year old. Our server, Katia, was exceptional, making sure our orders were correct and checking on our every need. This restaurant is part of a chain of restaurants, and there is one close to where we live. However, this place was worth the hour drive to get there. Bueno, Juan. My family and I came here just to get a bite to eat and get out of the house on a rainy day. We weren't sure what to expect but it's actually pretty cute. Walking in reminds me of a 1950s style ice cream shop/dinner. Oldies music playing. The king himself was playing as we entered. Super cute here with booths or high top counter seating. I love that. We chose counter seating. After that you instantly notice the train! It is on the counter where you eat but there is plenty of room to enjoy food and enjoy the passing train. Your food is also delivered to you by the train. The waitress clicks a button so it stops in front of you and she serves you the food off one of the train cars baskets which is super clever. Then the train is on it's merry way again. 25 cent to machines by the door as you leave is a bit hit with the kiddos. Also 25 cent pony rides for the cow boys and girls out there! Fantastic! Food was tasty. Good burgers (grass fed beef), hot dogs(also grass fed beef) and chicken fingers. Fries are great! Chocolate malt was just like childhood. Our waitress was a doll. Super sweet and friendly and helpful. Kids loved their cupcakes with train whistles on the top. It's definitely an original place and so fun for the family or to just grab a tasty burger and fries. Brought my 18 month old here a few weeks ago and he LOVED it! He enjoyed sitting by the train and watching it come by and say "choo choo" every time it went past. I had a cheeseburger and he had nuggets and a fruit cup. I thought the price of the kids meal was a bit steep for what you get ($6+). 2 Toots was THE perfect place to host my sidekick's 2nd birthday. Like others have said, it's more like a diner, just accented with trains. It's very family friendly and the staff was just lovely to work with. I had booked our day about 6 weeks in advance. All of their party booking and FAQ's are on their website so I all really needed to do was check the place out, check out where our party would be seated and book it. We did bring a cake instead of getting their house cupcakes. But their cupcakes did look cute. Their food is quite good. The menu is family and kid-centric but I appreciate that the beef is grass fed, prairie raised beef and that there are other options like salads and chicken on the menu. I love their burgers and it's interesting to know that the beef comes from Bill Curtis (of CBS) farm. 2Toots onion rings are pretty good too. Probably some of the best onion rings I've had. I'd definitely order them instead of fries in the future. I also tried their dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, and they were pretty good--tasted better than some restaurant chain's nugget offerings. Their milk shakes are just ok. But I do appreciate the unlimited refills on our soda. They were able to accommodate our group of 24 really well. We had 2 servers and they worked so hard checking on us often and making sure we had everything we needed. Very lovely gals! They made the day pretty perfect, and as a parent you bet I appreciated every effort they made. What is also a plus is that every seat in the house is along the train tracks, even the booths. Because of that, everyone's food gets delivered by train. The restaurant is located next to the Metra station so if the child in your life is super excited about trains (like my guy), if you can, take the Metra, their excitement and laughter will sustain you for days. read more

This is the best 2 Toots location out of all of them. It's huge, the layout is fabulous. I love that they use Grass Fed beef. The burgers are like a hybrid of Steak N Shake and Culvers. Your food gets delivered by a train riding around the counter. Feels like a diner, accented with trains. Pretty cut and dry. A little pricey. Here is why it's three stars instead of four for me: While we were sitting there, one of the managers came over to us looked at my kids' shakes (they'd split one so they each had a cup). He turns around and says to our server, "Did you give them these shakes?" she said yes. He then proceeded to berate her in front of us about the type of straws she gave us. The straws he made her give us to replace the originals actually were worse. But whatever. Later on, he berated her for seating a large party in a certain area of the restaurant when another large party walked in. Yes, because she should have looked into her crystal ball to know that another large party would be coming in. You may ask why I think this is worth noting - or why I even care. I was a server for a good 5 years in high school and college. I've had "that manager" that does that sort of thing. It's humiliating for the server, and it's uncomfortable for the customer as well. I tipped the server 25% because despite the manager's actions - she was a great server. We will go back, and hopefully that manager was just having an off day. We will see. read more

2 Toots Grill is a really fine example of how to do a restaurant that focuses on kids. Kids can care about more than pizza and video games, if you give them the chance. To be sure, this location is very kid-friendly. Each meal seems to come with plastic train whistles, and rest assured, these whistles were being deployed frequently, and to great effect. So I got take-out. Still, I was there long enough to get a good feel for the place. Most of the seating is located along an O-guage railroad track, which is continuously running two trains (an old Pennsylvania 19th century-era steam engine, and a more modern one) with six or seven Milwaukee Road flatbed cars where the cooks place their baskets of food to go out. It is, I have to admit, a pretty cool setup. There's also pictures of trains all over the walls, neon lights everywhere, kid-friendly music playing over the speakers, and even that horse you ride for a quarter in the corner. I ordered a cheese car, which is their basic cheeseburger, along with onion rings instead of fries. The portion was appropriate for the price, and service was extremely friendly. Once I got to having my burger, I was impressed. The meat was seasoned, and the patty was smashed, although the burger itself was still pretty moist. All the veggies were fresh, and they made a wise choice to use all grass-fed beef; I could definitely taste the difference. Throw on a large slice of sharp cheddar, and by the end I was thinking this was the best burger in town. The onion rings were very good as well. I couldn't really tell if they battered their own onion rings, but it certainly tasted homemade; the onion rings have a thin, very crispy shell, were nice and softened up on the inside. A little salt and I was set. 2 Toots has the benefit of a trackside location, so kids can check out the freight trains whenever they pass. 2 Toots is just the spot for every little boy, or girl, how about train lover. We took our son for his 2nd birthday. He absolutely loved it. He was so interested in all that was going on, he barely ate anything, but he entertained himself so that the adults could eat, a total plus. The only reason for the 4 stars vs. 5 is the food. The burgers are so thin, I mean super duper thin. I felt bad for my husband and father, they should have ordered the double stack. One patty isn't enough for a grown man. My dad did get the chili, he enjoyed it...said he would get it again. I actually opted for a BLT and loved it. The bacon was thick and the whole grain bread was really good. The fries were also good and each burger comes with lettuce, tomato and pickle on the side. I do appreciate that they use the Tall Grass Beef too. My son is part of the birthday club, his meal was free! Sign up your kids!!! His meal included a cupcake. He's not much into sweets, but took a couple bites, again, he was distracted by the whistle they put on the cupcake. He got a kick out of that, and in this place, him blowing it couldn't annoy anyone. My one complaint about the whistle is that they gave my son a pink one, I mean, come on. If there were 20 whistles and he chose the pink one, then fine, but if anyone from the restaurant is reading this, maybe you should segregate the whistles by gender. It would have been a nice touch. Good for my son though, he blew his pink whistle the entire ride home. Went here with my kiddies for one of their birthdays recently (sign up for the bday club online---in advance--they mail you a card for a free kids meal and dessert)-----although I didn't do that--she still received a free dessert--which was nice. When we went it wasn't busy at all so we were able to sit right up at the counter. There's something about trains that all kids love---I won't try to deny it--just roll with the punches---I do think it's cute that you're food comes out on a train. I really liked that the meat for the hot dogs and burgers was all grass fed beef---kudos to them for not serving up junk! They have Thomas the Train playing in the corner. 3. The music is old school and rocks. The bad 1. The train runs around the restaurant past people. I took my students here on a field trip. The food is a bit pricey for what you get, greasy diner food. I found it kind of lame. I expected better in terms of décor and train theme. The train theme consisted of your food arriving on a train and a small television playing Thomas the Train. I guess I cannot complain too much because my kids really liked it. Our server Kim (I think) was great with my students. I teach special education and she was very patient and gave my kids a lot of wait time when placing their orders and she didn't even flinch when good got spilled and ketchup squirted. We did however, get a dirty look by a young mail server when one of my students got excited and knocked over a train car. There wasn't even food on it! I went there for lunch with my daughter for the first time today. I walked in and one of the servers just said how many and booth or table. No hello for anything. Then she just threw some menus down on a table and walked away. I had to search for a high chair myself. Server didn't come back to table for awhile. When she finally came back I ordered. Food arrived and server never came to check on us until we were finished. I got the check and put the money on the table. The manager came from nowhere and just grabbed the money off the table and walked away. No thank you, nothing. Not even eye contact. Very rude andunprofessional. Well I was torn between 4 to 5 stars, but I gave it 4 stars. I came here since Groupon had an offer for 15 dollars at an 8 dollar value. I guess it was a little expensive so that is the reason why I gave it 4 stars. Servers were amazing. The train serving the food was very unique and creative. I love meat and I had the double stacker. It was OK. It's grass fed meat and I am assuming that is the reason why the it was not the best tasting burger in the wood, but it's suppose to be that way I guess. I read in the past reviews that the fries were greasy, but I disagree. They were not bad. Shakes were very good. I think I will come back here again in the future. The groupon was awesome.
