A group of 6 got Southern Cafe out on a Sunday morning around 11. It was packed inside, but luckily all were able to find parking. The wait was 30 minutes which for brunch on a weekend is pretty good. I deviated from my usual order of the Nasty Skillet, and got a special- Bayou Benny which is similar to the Crab Cake Benny, but with Andouille Sausage. It had a tasty sauce, but the crab cakes were mostly filler. It didn't really taste like crab at all, just a fritter. When I cut up my fritters there were teeny tiny pieces of what I assume were crab in it. Maybe less than 5 per fritter. The portion sizes are huge, and our waiter was super knowledgeable informing our tablemate what options would fit her dietary restrictions. I will likely go back to the Nasty Skillet next time I visit, but overall I am still a fan of Southern Cafe.

    Beignets, new to the menu.

Note to my fellow parents: they don't have crayons and coloring sheets or anything, which is somewhat standard at restaurants (maybe especially breakfast ones), so make sure to bring something for your children to keep them occupied if need be. Luckily our food was out in maybe 10 minutes once we ordered so there wasn't too much time to be idle. I had the biscuit omelet on this visit and it was okay. It didn't taste bad, and I'm glad I had it, but I'm not sure I would get it again. I think I'd rather have a different texture in my omelet. But everything tasted good together. The biscuits are good, but I'm not sure I like them to take home. We ordered some and they were just ok once reheated. It could be a me problem; perhaps I don't know how to reheat them properly. Seating is weird. It was just me and my toddler here and they placed us all the way in the back, and gave us a weird high chair that I wasn't able to get her into (I think it must be for smaller children, because either she was too tall to get the tray over her head or there's a secret I couldn't figure out to make it work). So she sat in the high chair band luckily I was able to pull her up to the booth enough that she could use the table. Their booths are pretty terrible for anyone with some extra meat on their bones, so I'll ask for a table if we go again or with a bigger party.

The portions are humongous! The food is really good. I had the smores pancakes and biscuit and gravy. The pancakes are BIG and fluffy. The biscuit and gravy was excellent but I was charged separately for the biscuit and gravy. $7 for a side order is too much. Our server was super friendly. It was crowded and we had to wait 20 minutes for a table. It was worth the wait. The restaurant was so loud. The customer's conversations were loud and the music was louder.

Great breakfast spot with plenty of parking. It does get busy on the weekends but not bad wait with plenty of seating inside. If you're looking for a good biscuit this is the spot. I got a nasty biscuit 8/10, it's heavy and banana pudding pancakes 10/10. Didn't even need syrup it was so tasty how it came. Staff was super nice and attentive. Definitely gives that southern feel inside.

If you've been to any of the Southern breakfast restaurants in the suburbs, you will be familiar with the offering of enormous portions of comfort food at very reasonable price. The Southern Cafe offers a similar experience though "cafe" might be misleading. This spot is quite large, with plenty of parking, decor that is fairly nice, and an atmosphere that is like a busy city restaurant rather than a relaxed cafe experience. Despite being so busy, service is actually quite fast here and our server was preemptively handling drinks, silverwares, sauces, and other items without being asked. The food here really shines, not only for the huge portions but also for the consistently good quality. The pancakes are enormous and fluffy, with plenty of toppings and a great flavor. These can definitely be split into a take home portion. The biscuits and gravy are awesome as well. The biscuit is fairly fluffy with a great texture and a nice buttery flavor, with gravy that is really the star with a very creamy texture and intense flavors of butter, salt, milk, and pepper. The chicken and waffles are good here as well, though the waffle is a little soft for my liking, but the flavor is good. The chicken breast that I had it with was tasty with a nice batter though I wish I'd gotten a thigh and leg instead (based on the excellent preparation at Southern Kitchen in Arlington Heights). The hash browns were nice and soft and cooked well, sausage was plump and not too salty, and the scrambled eggs had a good fluffy texture. Overall, great experience from start to end with comfortable seating, good service, but most importantly consistently delicious food served up in large portions but at very reasonable prices. Even though you'll likely run into a wait on weekends, it's worth it for the consistently reliable good experience.

Try something new every time you go! Wide variety of good food, including rotating seasonals. Service is normally spot on, expected longer waits on the weekends.

This place is phenomenal! Everything is serve in big portions you will definitely take home leftovers. The service was pleasant and the flavor of every dish is delicious. It's more family oriented.

Gotta say, I was not expecting some southern cooking in the Chicago suburbs. We were in town visiting some friends and before heading back Home they wanted to take us here for breakfast. Building inside and out, looks like good old southern charm. Menu had some very good selections, I went with the special a cornbread Benedict with pulled pork and a bbq hollandaise sauce, with a side of cheese grits. The food was amazing!

Hello, I just had the worst customer service experience at your restaurant. When we walked in, it was clear the server was new, but after placing our order she came back to the table three separate times to re-verify the order (pancakes, how we wanted our eggs, and what type of meat). Then, on the fourth time, a manager came over and told me I was not allowed to modify the scrambler to have hashbrowns on the side. At that point, we decided to leave due to the poor service. The server gave different names when asked -- first "Cassandra," then another employee said her name was "Emily" -- which makes the situation even more confusing. I would really appreciate it if a manager could contact me regarding this matter, as I'd like to get to the bottom of it. Thank you

Only issue is how loud it is in there. As food and service, I have no issues. The coffee was decent but the food was tasty.

I ordered the Iron Man omelette from the "Lighter Side" section, which sounds modest but clearly has superhero-level powers. Moments later, a glorious cloud of fluffy egg whites loaded with veggies landed in front of me like a gift from heaven. Now let's talk about the true headliner: the half avocado atop the omelette. Not the sad, rock-hard "maybe it'll ripen by Thursday" kind. This was an award-winning avocado performance. Perfectly ripe, green, and flavorful. The most perfect piece of produce ever produced. And then...strawberries, watermelon, and other tasty fresh fruit on the side. In February. In the Midwest. I don't know what kind of agricultural wizardry is happening back there in the kitchen, but I support it. As if that weren't enough, the waitress noticed my deep emotional commitment to hot sauce and brought me not one but TWO Cholula flavors. That's not just service. That's the kind of service that brings a tear to my eye. I was too overwhelmed with happiness to take photos, but let me just say it was an amazing lunch. Honestly, I may order this exact meal for my next ten visits because why mess with perfection? Outside of my ideal meal documented here, the breakfast+lunch menu is extensive, the daily soup rotation is strong, and everything about this place screams "small town gem." Came for lunch. Left emotionally attached to an avocado. 10/10.

I was seated pretty quickly and given a menu and ordered my standard unleaded coffee - decaf for those of you in the know. The ambience of the place was pretty good - very modern- very nice and it looked like it was very well-maintained. Always a good thing! To be honest? The only demerit was the waitress. Oh, she was good as a waitress, but she was not warm or welcoming - it seemed like she was just going through the motions, albeit professionally. It kind of makes a difference to me, you know? I decided to order a build your own omelette - I got turkey, sausage, turkey, bacon, and green peppers. In addition, I ordered a side of French toast and decided to try the hashbrowns because they look like they were housemade and not frozen. After a short bit of time, the food came out and oh my God! The portions were huge. I ate the French toast first but the only thing I noticed was the syrup was room temperature and not warmed up - not exactly a dealbreaker for me, but it would've pushed them over the top. The hashbrowns? Excellent! I put some hot sauce on the omelette and ate it all up - lickety split! So - would I come back? Probably. But I would hope for a different waitress is all. But I will say this - any breakfast joint that starts getting busy the very moment they open up at 7 AM on Sunday morning? Must be doing something right!

Ok, I was the first customer for the day (Yes, I wake up early!). I was seated, ordered a decaf coffee (sorry; had to go unleaded for health reasons, darn it). I reviewed the menu and - well - tried to find a comfy seating position on the upholstered booth table I was seated at. I'm sorry, but the springs on this thing had sprung, and there wasn't a comfy spot to be found. Ok. So there was that..... I liked the style of the place- but what in the world was with the 5,000 kelvin can lights in the ceiling? Folks, I want warm and comfy lighting - no more than 3500 Kelvin is what you had elsewhere in the restaurant. The 5,000 kelvin was just way, way too harsh. For shame. Pull out the "daylight" and put in a soft/warm kelvin bulb please! Hurts my eyes. Ok- the food. I ordered a 2-egg breakfast; subbed the hashies for rye toast, chose the sausage option, and upped the order to include two crepes with lingonberry sauce (always a sucker for lingonberry sauce, you know?). I was told the food would take a bit longer due to the crepes - didn't matter to me, really; couldn't be a huge delays could it? Naw, it wasn't. The food came out- ok, then! Let's check it out - the scrambled eggs and sausage were perfectly acceptable. The toast was not buttered (NO!) but was right outta the toaster- and man, that counted! As I started munchin' away, I noted the crepes seemed- well- a bit well done? Well, yeah. Like, on one crepe? The end of the crepe was hard and almost- but not quite- burnt. Yikes. I still ate it. It was relatively good, sure. But who over-cooks crepes? Can't say it was fantastic. Now, I don't have anything bad to say about the server- she was super nice and awesome! But fix up the seating/lights, please, as well as the crepes? You'll be in "5" territory in no time!

As recently as January 12th around 8:00 a.m., I placed this same order to go, the restaurant was busy and it was cooked perfectly, which is why today's experience was so disappointing. Today, January 20th with the temperature at 17 degrees, I placed a pickup order at 11:43 a.m. (Order #07). The restaurant was not busy, only two tables were occupied so I fully expected my order to be prepared correctly. I ordered crepes with fresh strawberries, eggs, sausage, and a second order with bacon. When I opened the containers, the food was clearly overcooked. One crepe was so hard I couldn't cut it, and the second crepe was three-quarters burned. The eggs were also overcooked. Unfortunately, I didn't have time and it was too cold outside to return to the restaurant. Because this is a place I frequent, I attempted to call three times before writing this review, letting the phone ring each time but no one answered. With recent price increases and a total of $44.90 before tax, I expect much better quality and consistency. This experience was extremely disappointing. To management: please retrain your cooks and reinforce quality control. Burned, overcooked food should never be sent out especially at these prices. If this continues, I will not be returning. I truly hope this feedback is taken seriously, as I've enjoyed this neighborhood restaurant for many years and would like to continue supporting it.
