I came to doctor tasch because my normal dentist recommended I get veneers on my front teeth due to damage. I can't emphasize this enough that he absolutely knocked it out of the park. I had pretty white straight teeth to begin with and they look exactly the same just without the damage to them. They don't look like the normal fake bulky veneers they look like my teeth!! This review is long overdue. I'm checking Yelp as I'm looking for a new dds. Thought I'd take a look at 38th St. dental as 38th St. was the first dental I chose to visit when I moved to Austin in 2019 as this practice was highly rated. But I recalled my personal experience and taking the time to look at the other low rated reviews, it confirms that my negative recall of my experience and the reason I had not returned to 38th St. is not wrong and numerous other patients or former patients of Dr. Meek spoke of their bad experiences with him. Let me add my review of Dr. Meek. This is long overdue but I will never forget my experience at this practice. I was the last patient of the day and had finished the cleaning. Waiting for Dr. Meek to come in to do the exam. I don't recall how long I was alone in that room with no one coming in to give a hint of why he's delayed and how long. Eventually he shows up. He starts talking about himself and his hunting trips. For a good 20 minutes. Not starting to examine my teeth. I continued to be polite and listened to him. When he appeared he was finished and he did not intend to do the exam, I pointedly asked about my exam. You have to be there...he burst out, "You want an exam, here....." He took his fat thumb and ran it quickly ran it around my gum all around. "There. The exam." Serious? I was shocked. I never did get the exam but I also never returned to this unprofessional practice and this rude man that calls himself a dentist. And now I express myself to anyone looking for a dentist in Austin, do not even consider going to 38th St. dental. Please read the other reviews about other patients' not to be believed experiences, reviews that I did not consider when I was seeking a new dds. That was a mistake. Went to this dentist to try them out for a first time visit. They chose to do only x-rays and asked for me to make time for another appointment to clean. I could never get an appointment for cleaning even though after I called a second time and they promise to call me back when an appointment would open up. Never happened. Not exactly friendly and strange that I could never get much communication in order to get an appointment. I have never been to a dentist with this type of system. I guess it was inconvenient for their business to have both x-rays and a cleaning in one appointment which is all I wanted. read more

In 2003, I was here in Austin for SXSW, and I broke a tooth on a tortilla chip! It didn't hurt but I needed it fixed. A friend of a friend sent us to Dr. Tash. We end up living here, and after 10 years, hubby and I, going to 38th Street Dental. . . for me it's a big deal because I am a dental-phobe for decades. I will part company with these good docs because of the office staff's inability to be kind. Mainly the Office Manager who shamed me for escalating in my anxiety. It's the second time I've been in an medical provider's office that has not understood what panic/anxiety attacks look like. No we don't ALL hyperventilate. I hypoventilate or hold my breath and my body stiff. And well I sound like I'm gonna start a bar fight. An because gee, 'just calm down', is the answer women still get, I choose not to use these providers. And my psychiatrist validates this. I am broken. I have PTSD. I will not apologize for this. No one should be shamed in 2020 for needing support. Dr. Tash is a good, kind dentist. My husband will keep using him but I will go where I'm offered lavender scented eye pillows. . .and closer to where I live. To Austinites, new and old, we need to chose our medical/professional care by either being driven to the appointment or close to home. It's not worth the traffic and carbon foot-print. Please note that my complaint below is not regarding the hygienist who cleaned my teeth, but with Dr Tasch and the way he handled it afterwards. The worst patient communication I've ever experienced. After a teeth cleaning, I felt significant pain around my permanent retainer like my teeth were suddenly being pinched together. Sure enough, after 2-3 days one of my teeth had shifted dramatically such that it was overlapping another tooth in a way that it hadn't been previously. The pain largely subsided now that my teeth had realigned. Clearly my retainer had shifted and realigned my teeth. I went back in to see Dr. Tasch to get his advice about how to proceed - remove the retainer, leave it in, get a new one? Instead of helping me understand what may or may not have happened and what my options were, he spent his time arguing with me and said that there was no way my retainer had shifted the last week. He pulled up a note he'd made about my teeth three years earlier and argued with me saying that this had been a gradual issue since 2020. Even if the two notes were connected, there was clearly an acute event that caused the sudden pain and shift in my teeth. Not according to Dr. Tasch. The pain I felt immediately after leaving his office? I must have made it up. The shift in my teeth that I noticed over those 2-3 days? Nope, he apparently has a photographic memory and told me that he was 100% certain he remembered that that's what my teeth looked like when he'd seen me the week earlier. His memory was so perfect that he couldn't possibly be misremembering a single tooth placement among all his patients. Two stars instead of one because his staff is delightful and helpful. read more

One of the best dentist I've ever been to. As a new patient, I called to schedule my appt and was told I could fill out the paperwork online, which was so convenient. I just showed up just before my appt at 8 AM and was promptly taken back by a sweet hygienist who was very friendly throughout my whole cleaning. After she was done, Dr. Tasch quickly came to check out my teeth which he said were beautiful (tell me something I don't know) and I was out the door before 9 o'clock. I'm not afraid of dentists anyway, since I take very good care of my teeth, but I am definitely looking forward to going back in 6 months for another great check-up. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Meeks for almost/right at twenty years. However, I received an email from his office stating that they are now charging $24 per patient for PPE gear for every appointment. When I questioned the offices practices. And stated that I would finish out my two appointments and find another dentist. I was basically told that I can go to a new dentist now.Which was rude. It wasn't about the $24. It is about principal. I'm fortunate to not have to worry about money. Apparently the practice didn't take into consideration that people are going through hardships due to the pandemic. I have been a person that has been loyal to their practice for TWENTY YEARS and this is how I am treated. I am truly disappointed by their actions. It seems that it's not about the patient with this practice. It's about the money. I've seen some of the reviews where people state how friendly they are. Of course the Dentists are friendly when you're lining their pockets. Disagree with them and see how friendly they are. In my opinion, I would NOT recommend anyone use their services. On a positive note, I will say that they have some great Hygienists working for them. Wow. I have had some pretty terrible experiences at Austin dentists in the last two years and I had no idea going to the dentist could be so easy and fun until I went to Dr. Tasch at 38th Street Dental. It was like going to the dentist of the future. The practice is totally paperless, so I filled out my new patient paperwork online prior to my appointment. When I arrived, about 10 minutes early, all I had to do was electronically sign a few documents and I was ready to go. Within 5 minutes of arriving, I was in the chair and the hygienist was taking digital x-rays which I could view on a monitor in front of me. She was very friendly and talkative while she worked and was thorough and gentle. She explained, again on the monitor, which teeth needed extra care with flossing and brushing, but I never felt scolded or embarrassed about my teeth as I have often felt at dental visits. Dr. Tasch came in and did an oral cancer screening, asked me about any problems or concerns, and while he looked over my teeth, explained about how flossing helps reduce the incidence of gingivitis and gum disease. After the crap care I have received at other offices on my previous DMO, this was almost mind blowing. He also gave me coupons and wrote me a prescription for an electric toothbrush in order to help me use my FSA to pay for it. I cannot say enough good things about this dental practice and Dr. Tasch. I was skeptical at first. I hate going to the dentist, and I hadn't found a doctor in Austin that I really liked. But it was time for a check up and my boyfriend recommended 38th Street Dental. I went in for a check up, went back for fillings, and then went in again for an adjustment to one of the fillings. Each time I received excellent service from the women at the front desk. They greeted me by name every time I walked in the door. The offices are immaculate with sweeping views from big windows. And they only have the very best equipment. Dr. Meek is great. He's professional and it's obvious he really cares about doing the job right every time. I went back to see him when my tooth still hurt after having a filling. He fixed it quickly and carefully and didn't charge me anything. The thing that really set him apart from every other doctor I've been to was that he sent me a handwritten card after my first visit. The waiting room tables are full of good magazines; my favorite part of the doctor's office experience. But I haven't been able to really flip through any of them, because they always see me as soon as I arrive, even if I'm early! As a person with anxiety, going to the dentist is never a fun experience for me. After prolonging a cleaning, I made an appointment with Dr. Tasch based off of his stellar reviews on here. After my cleaning, I was told I needed a crown and 5 fillings (not to my surprise) and made the appointment. After my first appointment, which was to be for the crown and 2 fillings, Dr. Tasch decided that the decay was in fact not as severe as shown on the X-ray for the tooth needing the crown. As a result, he just gave me a filling. He also decided against one of the other fillings as, again, the decay just wasn't as bad as previously thought. I'm impressed by Dr. Tasch's concern for the patient and what kind of treatment plan is best suited for them. He obviously cares for the patient and isn't trying to get money out of them. I have another appointment set up for my remaining 3 fillings that, as Dr. Tasch stated, could have the same outcome as my previous appointment (some fillings may not be needed). He's very conservative and has very reasonable rates. I really like their electronic system for reminding patients when they need a check-up and when their next appointment is. The staff are always friendly and the office itself is very calm and inviting (love the pictures of dogs on the TV!). read more

I'm a weirdo. I've always and forever been obsessed with teeth. It's the first thing I notice about someone. I never thought I would considering I wore braces for 4 1/2 years and I thought orthodontists were the devil. And ironically after I got my braces off, I started working for one as an after school gig through a counselor from high school who recommended me. Crazy turn of events. After I graduated from college, my first job was at a dentist office that had an orthodontist office upstairs and the dental office downstairs. The guy that owned it ended up graduating with the guy that I worked for at the orthodontist office. Small world. I assisted with putting braces on kids and then I moved down to assisting with oral surgeries - which was the coolest. I had the BEST dentist in Michigan - Dr. Dery. Their staff was the best and the coolest part about his office was that he had TV's in all the rooms and would put this tire-pressure looking gauge in your mouth that had a camera on it that he would move around the inside of your mouth and you could see your teeth on the TV. It was awesome. But I moved to Texas so the hunt for the next great dentist was on. I found 38th Street Dental. Dr. Tasch and Dr. Meek are awesome and I could not be happier. Dr. Meek is a dog photographer in his spare time and Dr. Tasch (whom I see for my teeth needs) is smart, great dentist. When you walk in the lobby, there's a gorgeous slated backdrop with a large TV on it that plays slideshows of Dr. Meek's dog photography work. The front desk gals are super nice and friendly. I LOVE going to the dentist. It's like a spa for my teeth. I don't have any cavities and don't intend to! If I could wake up every morning and go to the dentist, I would. I was a patient of Dr Meek only meeting him briefly at every cleaning I had there so I had no knowledge of his personality when under pressure or his work ethic. I was reluctant when in for my last cleaning there was informed by him that I needed a crown according to the x-ray he to took never able to see a crack on the front of the tooth as he pointed it out to me. I agreed to a crown thinking he was telling me what he knew to be the case. When the crown came in it was made incorrectly. Agitated, he shared that information with me but was determined to use it anyway instead of having it remade. Dr. Meek became so upset when he first attempted to make it larger adding material leaving me sitting in the chair for 45 minutes and then discovering it was now too big after shoving it in my mouth several times and getting it wedged that he acquired a nervous condition where he could barely hold the drill as he tried to now shave it back down after he made it too big. Eventually he kicked the chair out from under him and told his assistant to finish the job and I never saw him again that day. She stuck it in my mouth and sent me home. I was in pain and I knew it was wrong. I went back and he tried to pass it off to a sinus infection or grinding my teeth which he knows I do not do and after talking rudely and insensitively told me to come back in two weeks and he would cut it off. He even asked me what I wanted him to do and I nervously replied that he was the dentist and that I was only trying to explain the pain. Unfortunately that was not what happened when I went back. He told me after taking another x-ray at my request that he had now discovered that my issues are because my tooth is in need of a root canal rather than do the right thing and as he promised. He was going to send me to one of his buddies. I was done with him at that point. I left and went home and called my physician to call me in an antibiotic, once on it for a few days I called a new dentist highly regarded in Austin and went to see him for a second opinion who upon review of the x-ray could not see the crack. Upon inspection of the crown he told me the margins were off slightly and why my gums were irritated. I then went to an endodontist who confirmed my suspicions...the tooth root was and still is fine and no root canal needed. I immediately called my new dentist to set up and appt to have the one Dr. Meek made cut off and to have a new one made.. all at my expense. My mouth is too important and I had no choice. Dr. Meek refused to take responsibility for what he had done and that was to remake the crown as he had promised. He actually suggested I go get second opinions(really?) from another dentist and an endodontist and we would talk about what he would do. Knowing him as I do I knew that would never happen and I was too uncomfortable being around him and definitely not going to allow him to work in my mouth again. If he couldn't get it right the first time I certainly was not going to give him a second chance. I needed immediate attention to my newly crowned tooth. I knew I couldn't wait so I went elsewhere. He and his staff were very casual about the whole thing..of course supporting Dr Meek and acting as his buffer. His own office manager even refused to meet with me. I was limited to communicating with the front desk personnel which I found very odd. Dr. Meek worked in mouth like a car mechanic under the hood of a car once he discovered the crown was made wrong. I had neck, jaw, gum tooth pain because of his work which by the way all disappeared once I had his crown removed/replaced and I finished the antibiotics. My new crown and my tooth are fine. I had a wonderful experience with my new dentist and none of the symptoms I experienced with Dr Meek. Just a word of advice. Always get a second opinion when in doubt and even when you are not in doubt. This was a costly experience on so many levels but I weathered the storm. I just wonder how many people this happens to that see Dr. Meek and they don't question. In all sincerity I am not happy having to expose this situation but I feel it is warranted and I feel I deserve to have a voice. Just because I do not have the title of Dr. in front of my name does not and should not make me less credible. I went in for a cleaning which I only have once a year with no issues and then this unfolded. Always trust your gut. I did... just not soon enough. I know deep in my heart that the least he could do is refund me my portion of the cost of his crown but he has yet to do that to this day. Pretty much what I expected once I had a chance to get to know him. Additionally, in response to your comment that Yelp took down my 1st negative review I must tell you that ONCE AGAIN you are providing completely inaccurate information. Dr. Meek is great. I love going to the dentist! When I moved to Austin I wasn't able to find anyone I liked and ended up not going to the dentist for a few years. I got referred by a coworker (yay insurance) and hope to keep going to Dr. Meek for years to come. I live and work in South Austin, but it is well worth the drive! His staff is excellent and make sure you feel comfortable. They are not pushy about "extras", but give you their honest opinion. If you are fortunate, over the course of a lifetime you will meet people who are gifted at what they do, love doing it, and enrich the lives of those with whom they interact. Dr. David Tasch is such a person. A sports injury required removal of my front tooth and a crown on the adjacent tooth. Scary stuff. He suggested I work with Dr. Widner on the oral surgery part, a recommendation that proved invaluable for two reasons. First, Dr. Widner did a great job and second, the doctors are across the hall from one another. The procedure I had required numerous visits over seven months. Thankfully, the office staffs coordinated with one another making it easy for me. Dr. Tasch treated me like I was his most important patient. Early on when I had a temporary crown it came off, not uncommon. He said it might happen, and if it did, just call the office and he would respond. It happened on a Saturday morning. "No problem, come on up and I'll take care of it." Over seven months he was always eager to take care of me. The new tooth looks PERFECT and the crown on the adjacent tooth matches PERFECTLY. He and his team worked diligently to match the color to my existing teeth. You know those cooking shows where the French chef suffers over his every dish? Dr. Tasch is the dental equivalent (Is there a Michelin star for dental professionals?). His work with me required a lot of creativity and attention to detail. The office staff and his assistants mirror his courteous dedication to their task. If only every medical/dental experience could be so terrific. Ok, I'll stop now - you get it. The front desk staff always seems to be friendly and they call you the day before to remind you of your appointment. I saw Dr. Meek a couple days ago and all I have to say is...that was the most positive experience I've ever had at the dentist. That's saying a lot, considering I have had my fair share of dental work done. There was something about Dr. Meek that just made me feel comfortable. I'm not afraid of the dentist. But I can totally understand how someone might be. It's rather terrifying, all those tools and sounds and the potential of having your mouth drilled or your teeth ripped out. But, I think the best way to combat fear, is to fully understand what's going on. This was my favorite element of visiting this office (Dr. Tasch) for the first time. He and his dental hygienist were incredibly kind, helpful, and explained each and every detail of the process. Also, they have done a great job of implementing new technologies to make things more efficient. I literally walked in, signed my name on an electronic pad (I had already filled out and submitted my paperwork online) and within five minutes, was called in for my turn in the chair. Yes, I do have a cavity, and as a result of that fact, I'm a touch bummed, but the overall experience? 5 Stars for sure. I usually get dental work done overseas, but since I haven't been able to travel in a while due to work so I decided to get my teeth checked and cleaned here thanks to new dental insurance. The office was clean and the receptionist was very sweet, I had to wait less than 5 minutes before I was brought to the back. I was seated in a chair with a nice view and Jennifer was my dental assistant. She explained everything to me very thoroughly from my x-rays to how i should clean my teeth and why I might be experiencing some gum swelling. Dr. Tasch also came by to discuss my x-rays in depth and helped me understand what they meant and what I should watch out for (staining, cavities, gingivitis, etc) he took a look at my teeth and decided that I would need a filling sometime soon and was happy to answer all of my questions. After he left, Jennifer cleaned my teeth and polished them for me, I have never seen them so clean! I was worried at first because it was getting close to 5 pm and I know how some people tend to get antsy and try to finish whatever they are doing so they can get out of the office right at 5:00, but she was patient and very detailed. She also told me about different kinds of toothbrushes I could get and how I should floss correctly and prevent future staining. When I went out to the receptionist she told me I would need 2 fillings, which confused me since I thought I had heard the doctor say I only needed one. She was patient in explaining to me why the doctor put me down for 2 fillings and was happy to double check all the prices with my insurance. My teeth/gums look amazing and feel healthy and I will definitely be coming back here regularly for my cleanings and exams! read more

Dr Meek has been my dentist for about 6 years now and I have always had excellent experiences. From the staff at the front desk who always ask me how my husband and son are doing, to the hygienists and the dental assistant. Everyone is always so friendly. I cannot stress this enough. Dr Meek really cares about his patients. Once that I had a very, very bad tooth ache, he even gave me his cell phone number in case of an emergency. Now that's what I call a good dentist! I really trust him. I love how they send you email reminders for your appointments. It's very convenient. I don't think I would ever have said that ( as a kid dentist was synonym of nightmare for me), but I actually look forward to my visits! read more

I have been using Dr. Tasch since 1991. He has done crowns and replaced my night guard, more than once. I would love to continue to go there but they no longer take my dental insurance. I have also moved to Pflugerville so will be getting someone closer to my new residence. I have only had good experiences here and would recommend him to anyone that needs a regular dentist. I ALWAYS have an excellent experience at 38th Street Dental. I have been going there for several years and will not go anywhere else! Dr. Meek is wonderful at his job. He is patient, kind and funny. He always answers all my questions and takes very good care of me. More than anything, I TRUST HIM. His staff is very nice and I never wait more than a few minutes to be seen. I have been driving in from San Antonio for the last 2 years because it is worth it. The staff makes you feel like you are part of their family. The hygienist I saw today, Sadie, was AMAZING. She made me feel at ease and relaxed. She will be my hygienist from now on. Then there is Dr Meek, there is not enough time in the day to say how wonderful he and his assistant are. I have HIGH anxiety with going to the dentist, they are very patient and professional and never makes a big deal out of my anxiety. I HIGHLY recommend this practice. read more
