If we're being real...nobody likes going to the dentist. But ATX Family Dental completely changed the experience for me. First off, the space is chic, modern, and actually feels intentional. Not sterile and cold , but stylish and welcoming. The waiting room is super cute and thoughtfully designed, which already makes you feel more relaxed walking in. Every treatment room has a TV on the ceiling (because seriously... why do dentists put them on the wall where you can't even see them while laying back?). And yes, they give you the remote. Full control. As they should. They also give you these cool heart-eye sunglasses while they work on you, which is such a small but fun touch that makes everything feel less clinical and more comfortable. Bad experience. I'm a student in Austin so I live both here during the school year and in California when on break. I came in for my bi-annual cleaning last month and asked them not to do x-rays because I just did them less than half a year ago at my California dentist. The hygienist said not to worry about the cost of doing it twice because it would be covered. A few weeks later I get a bill for the x-rays. When I called their receptionist, they admitted that the hygienist had noted I was hesitant to get the x-rays, but her exact words were "it SHOULD be covered" so I have to eat the charge regardless. SUMMARY: PROS: Dentists seem quite competent, staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. CONS: No pricing on website for any services (not even their own in-house dental plan). Patients shouldn't be kept in the dark, or forced to call to get pricing. U.S. healthcare has an abysmal lack of transparency in pricing, almost no provider discloses their pricing publicly, but they absolutely should, there's nothing stopping them. DETAILS: When a dentist recommends fillings or crowns, it's hard for the patient as a layperson to know whether the work is really necessary. (Unnecessary dental work is common, Google it.) Here, the first dentist I saw put the x-rays up on a big TV monitor and explained her interpretation, in detail. She did the same thing with photographic images. That's not something I've normally experienced with other dentists. It makes me a lot more confident in the recommendations. Other pros: (1) She has a holistic approach (using that word specifically), and is interested in my having my mostly asymptomatic GERD treated because even if it doesn't cause me any discomfort, it seems to be affecting my oral health. (2) She explained the pros and cons of fillings vs. crowns, and why she's recommending one or the other, depending on the tooth. Though this is a simple thing, it's something my other dentist didn't do; she just handed me a treatment plan. (3) She agreed that for most of the recommended work, I can put off that work if I up the game on my home care and there's no further significant deterioration. (4) Many/most Western doctors mistreat GERD (acid reflux) by prescribing drugs to de-acidify the stomach, which is wrong because the natural condition of the stomach is acidic (it's how you digest food); the proper treatment is to try get the valve to close tightly so the acid doesn't reflux. Dr. Vinh is aware of this, which puts her ahead of many other medical professionals. (5) It feels like the dentists and staff treat me with white-glove service. They explain every step of the process (and the rationale) rather than just doing it, constantly ask if I'm comfortable or if I want another rinse, etc. After a filling or crown, the dentist calls that evening to check on me (not the hygienist, not the receptionist, the dentist her/himself). I've been to many other dentists and haven't received service anywhere close to this. And usually when you get premium service, you pay for it, but the prices here seem to be about median according to the dental blue book. Ultimately I saw all three dentists at the practice, and had the same great experience with all of them. There's a Beatles analogy that's appropriate: The Beatles had a capable drummer (Pete Best) who wasn't bad at all, but was likewise nothing special. When the group replaced him with Ringo, it took their sound to the next level. My previous dentist was like Pete Best: not a bad dentist at all, but just not an awesome dentist, either. Another reviewer said that the practice wouldn't give upfront pricing, offers compensation for reviews, and has other reviews here that are fake because the reviewers have little history on Yelp. My experience with each of these things was different: I got the treatment plan (with pricing) while I was still sitting in the chair; their text message encouraged me to write a review (or let them know what they could have done better), but offered no compensation; and I have hundreds of reviews on Yelp, giving almost as many 1-star reviews as 5-stars, so I have the weight of all that behind this review. read more

Really put off by the money grubbing nature of this business. I paid for a membership, they DIDN'T give me the cleaning that comes with it (had to pay additional), I have to do that a second visit for the free one only a month later. I had an appointment scheduled for a few weeks from now and was on the waitlist-- they called a couple of days ago to tell me something opened up same day, I couldn't make it; they then told me about another appointment in a few days and under duress I said yes despite being scheduled weeks in in the future. I tried to cancel the appointment this weekend, Bethany told me she will charge me for 2 missed appointments despite giving them 48 hours notice. I told her ball was in her court and I would leave a review and she told me I am not welcome back there even for my July appointment because we are not "aligned" and now keeping my deposit for the fillings. Money traps at EVERY corner. When I did go in I thought the technician did a good job on me but sad to say that people like Bethany really sour the business portion of it by creating scams at every corner of this business. read more

Everything from the decor to the cute glasses they put on you during your exam/X-rays is awesome. My hygienist was super friendly and careful because I am terrified of all things dentist related.
