Most recently, I had an unexpected dental emergency involving a salivary gland infection. Dr. Bernal was able to get me in quickly, thoroughly evaluate the issue, and help relieve the pressure by draining the infected gland. What could have been a stressful experience was handled with professionalism, skill, and genuine care. Duyen is a wonderful hygienist, gentle and non-judgmental about my terrible flossing. I'm lucky to not have any major issues but my wife recently had to have an old crown replaced (put in by her family dentist back in CA) and she was very happy with their work. (1) I asked my other dentist to send my X-rays to East Austin Dental. I didn't know whether EAD got them, because they didn't let me know, I had to call them myself. (2) When I arrived they said there would be no discount for my having the other office send the x-rays, opposite of what they'd told me on the phone. (After I protested, they eventually did honor the phone price.) (3) Then as soon as I went back, the hygienist tried to start with X-rays. I explained again that the other office had sent my X-rays, they agreed that we were skipping the X-rays, then said the ones from my other dentist were low quality and they'd have to take new X-rays anyway. The dentist criticized the workmanship of fillings I'd already had done, saying the shape wasn't good, and he wanted to redo lots of my fillings, at considerable cost. I asked, is the poor filling shape just cosmetic, or is there a functional benefit to having better-shaped fillings? He didn't answer directly, so I had to ask again. Eventually he said, "I'm an artist...", so it seems like it's cosmetic only. I chose another highly-rated dentist, who didn't say anything about the shape of my existing fillings. Overall I just got a better vibe from that office. But, despite my experience here, you'll see that most patients are very happy with EAD, so chances are that you will be, too. read more

Be careful with this office and Delta Dental Insurance. They stopped accepting this insurance and did not inform me when I called with my updated policy information. Instead they said they sent a mass email months back and that's how they were telling patients. Not when specially asked or updating insurance info. My father was a dentist and this is not ethical. Additionally I then asked to just cancel my appointment and they said they would charge me a same day cancellation fee. read more

Super shady practices! I've been going to them for years and it was never a problem. Like a previous reviewer wrote - they recently stopped taking Delta Dental Insurance. They could have warned me multiple times before my visit. I gave them updated insurance indicating it was Delta Dental months before my routine cleaning - they could have said it then. The morning of the visit I asked why I'd be paying out of pocket so much, that I never had to in the past, and they said it shouldn't be an issue - Delta Dental would reimburse me with a check in the mail. This is not the case. They are not covered with Delta Dental. They use bull jargon like "we aren't contracted with them, we sent everyone an email" (I never received one). Make sure you get an estimate of how much you'll pay out of pocket before your visit, and get it printed from them! read more

Absolutely the best dental experience I've ever had. Have gotten a deep cleaning and two fillings repaired and was in and out in record time. The day after the deep cleaning, I would have never known I had it done. With other dentists in the last, my jaw would have been throbbing for weeks. Had two fillings replaced today... I was in and out in less than an hour. On top of all of this, they've got awesome art in the office and play great music. The staff is super nice. East Austin Dental clearly doesn't NEED another 5-star rating, but I've had such an over-the-top outstanding experience with them, I just have to leave a review. I have an extremely difficult and annoying dental situation that has stumped many other dentists. Dr. Potter has been absolutely determined to get my teeth perfect no matter what. When he was out of town, Dr. Bernal personally called me to answer a question so that I wouldn't have to wait for Dr. Potter to return. Vanessa and Griselda who handle the administrative aspects and Colette who has been my hygienist are all wonderful--every single person I have encountered at this practice is willing to go above and beyond for you. Even though they're about a 30 min. drive from my house and there are many other dentists who are closer, I will always be willing to make the trip for such a great experience. read more

Dr. Bernal is absolutely AMAZING! And all the staff - they are always so friendly and helpful. I love that I can watch Netflix while they do work - just need to remember to keep my laughter at bay during 30 Rock. I had bonding on my front 4 teeth due to some flecking of enamel coming off and causing divots in my teeth - it caused them to be discolored in weird areas and my teeth were very sensitive. I had some bonding done to them years ago but those kept chipping and they stained very easily. Dr. Bernal recommended veneers since the bonding kept chipping and I'm SO HAPPY he did! While I like the dentist, I think this is super important info if you are looking here: - they are booked four months in advance - their call-back list for cancellations is full at over 70 people The only suggestion they had for me was to call back every single day at 3PM to check for cancellations. I'm pretty bummed because I had to cancel my original appointment and they never warned me that I should have tried to reschedule immediately - I'm one of those folks who waited until the end of the year to get their insurance-covered dental cleaning...also bummed b/c calling back every single day is a pretty lame solution. read more

One word to describe this practice: HONEST. Dr. B and his staff are awesome. I bit a cherry seed pretty hard a few months ago and thought I broke one of my front teeth. It was loose and bleeding at the gum. I came into the office about 5 minutes before closing. Dr. B graciously took the time to see me that day, and schedule me for a follow up the next week with Dr. Potter. I have friends with nightmare stories about their dentist over diagnosing their issues...leading to unnecessary work being done. This translates to more money going out if their pockets. With my issue, Dr. B could have very well told me my tooth needed a root canal and a new crown (which I've done before...and it ain't cheap)...and I probably would've went along with it. But he and Dr. Potter didn't over diagnose and was conservative with my treatment plan. Dr. Potter actually splinted my loose tooth using the two surrounding teeth. This allowed the loose tooth's ligaments to heal back up. I live over 15 miles away in Hays County and don't mind the long drive for an honest dentist. read more

Want to start by saying that I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I didn't know how I would handle a visit to the dentist. I had a broken tooth and needed to take care of it Dr. Potter and his staff were AMAZING. I never thoght I would be leaving a five star review for one of my least favorite things (visiting the dentist) but here we are. Dr Bernal is great. He is knowledgeable, listens, and most of all, wont try to convince you to buy things/get procedures you don't need. One time we only did one of two scheduled procedures and afterwards he walked with me up front to the receptionist and confirmed with them twice that I should not be charged for the second procedure. It really meant a lot that he cared so much that I was not overcharged. All of the receptionists and hygienists are super nice, easy to talk to, and personable. Dental work is so much more enjoyable with the awful looking (but so helpful) sunglasses and Netflix playing on the ceiling above you (yep, you can pick your own show.) I found East Austin over a year ago when my previously incompetent dentist in Lubbock failed to tell me my teeth needed serious maintenance. I came in for a root canal, and everyone was soooo nice and accommodating! Dr. Bernal and all of the staff genuinely care about you, and going to the dentist is no longer a chore because of the level of care I know I will receive. Dr. Bernal just finished repairing all of my teeth (thanks incompetent Lubbock dentists!!!) and I know I am in more than capable hands with him as my dentist. Also, small aside - I have a pretty difficult name to pronounce in English because my name is mandarin, and everyone here makes sure they pronounce it correctly which means a lot. Today was the first time at this office and the first time I've gone to the dentist since I moved here to Austin and I have to say I don't think I'm ever gonna change. This is probably the only place I really felt comfortable and everyone was so nice which made my nervousness go away! My procedure went smoothly and quickly! Having the tv play Netflix while all that is going on is definitely nice to have and something I've never gotten at any other office. If you live near East Austin, or in the 78702 area, this should be your dental office. Without getting too mushy/gushy about how amazing Dr. Bernal is, people need to know how great this place is. I'll break it down: 1) Dr. Bernal is one of the most laid back, kind, and respectful people in the dental profession. 2) East Austin Dental is HIS dream, executed. No corporate short cuts, No used/old equipment, and an absolutely incredible attention to detail. 3) Stunning office design. Seriously, this place could be a modern art museum. It fits PERFECTLY on the East Side (cool custom art, modern fixtures, and style galore). 4) He takes PPO insurance. This makes your dental visits affordable and convenient. 5) Parking is easy with the new garage access to the inside. There are much more things to list here, and I'm sure others will eventually add on. They've only been open for one month. This is a first class office. Dr. Bernal and the entire staff at East Austin Dental are incredible. I went in this week with an incredibly painful headache caused by a cracked tooth. It was a difficult diagnosis as the tiny cracks in my tooth caused so much pain but were hard to see, even on xray. He ran different test to pinpoint the pain, and went out of his way to confer with other colleagues about the diagnosis to make sure I had all options for treatment. Dr. B was honest, up front and made me feel good about what was going on throughout the process. During these crazy times, safety was a priority for his office staff. They were prepared with hand sanitizer as you walk in the door and employees were wearing mask for everyone's protection. And a nice bonus, you can bring a netflix show to watch during your appointment on the screens in the ceiling! read more

After posting my original review, Dr. Bernal reached out directly to me and we had a long phone conversation where we both discussed the issues I noted in this review (for which he was very apologetic) and he gave me helpful advice and a referral for my current dental issues. I believe Dr. Bernal to be a knowledgeable, honest and kind practitioner and that the majority of the issues I mention are related to how the office has been run. While I have not returned to see if these issues have been resolved, if I were to return to the practice, I would request to see Dr. Bernal (as I was seeing his associates) to ensure consistency of care. read more

I'm one of those people who had bad experiences with dentists as a kid and then avoided going back as I grew up. In adulthood it's something I wish I had not ignored but have. This backfired recently and I ended up in Dr. Bernal's chair to do some emergency dental work due to the extreme pain I was in. The entire experience was just amazing. I've never encountered such nice people in any medical profession and not once did I feel like I was being judged for not taking as good of care of my teeth as I could have (a big reason I think a lot of people don't like a lot of dentists). The entire staff was kind, helpful, and reassuring that everything was going to be ok. I think they all knew I was a bit anxious about having to do emergency dental work last minute and they did their best to set me at ease. At the end of the day it comes down to Dr. Bernal himself. He immediately strikes you as someone who truly cares about your well-being and isn't just there to suggest work you don't actually need. It was a no brainer to give 5 stars to Dr. Bernal and his staff. I like to think I have some extra insight into the dental world having been a dental hygienist for 20 years. I am particular to say the least about my teeth and who takes care of them. First off the front desk is very friendly and efficient. They are paperless which is awesome, yay environment!! Parking in Austin can be a challenge, but not here! Plenty of parking in the parking garage and they validate!! Now to the dental cleaning, which I happen to love of course. My partner however, has very sensitive teeth and going to the dentist is not her favorite thing to do. I had cleaned her teeth for the last 4 years, now that I am retired it was time for a new hygienist. In comes Colette, super sweet, great chair side manner and great cleaning! Colette is very thorough, but gentle which are two very important qualities to have in a hygienist. My partner was very happy with Colette and will only be seeing her for future cleanings..success!! This is hands down the BEST dentist I've ever been to! First of all, the office is brand new and so nice. The staff is unbelievably friendly and helpful, the secretary even came out onto the street to help show me where to park when I got confused. The have tv's hanging from the ceiling that they'll play whatever you want on netflix during your dental cleaning/procedures. The real kicker, Dr. Bernal HIMSELF did my dental cleaning. Since when do dentists actually perform their own patient cleanings?! I thought this was so awesome and personal. Lastly, Dr. Bernal has a new vibrating metal tool for tooth cleaning that helps him avoid have to aggressively scrape your teeth with those harsh metal picks, I could barely feel what he was doing it was the least painful/uncomfortable cleaning I have ever had. At the end of the visit he performed a 15 minute free teeth whitening session, as if I wasn't already in love with this practice! I just moved here and found East Austin Dental on Yelp and could not be more pleased. They book up far in advance but the office team worked to get me in as soon as possible. The office is very cool and so is Dr. Bernal. He was honest with me that the cosmetic work I was requesting would not be best for my teeth in the long run, and suggested a more conservative route saving me hundreds of dollars. I am back to loving going to the dentist again. I second everything all of the other 5 star reviews have to say plus the following.... Their technology for booking and "paperwork" is advanced to make things super easy. Everything is digital so they aren't wasting actual paper. The receptionist was awesome about working with me on scheduling and handling my insurance stuff. Also, the office is super beautiful and pristine. I am a major germophobe and I was absolutely at ease there. The Xray tech was awesome. I have a tiny mouth so I'm usually I'm crying and bleeding through the Xray portion. He worked with me to get the xrays painlessly (versus just making me bite down on something that is going to cut up my gums as I've experienced in other dentist offices). He was super patient and sweet despite having to do it a couple of times because of my tiny mouth. Dr. Bernal did the exam before the cleaning and was super straightforward about everything. The hygienist was super gentle while being very precise and getting everything. The whole cleaning itself was totally painless and an absolute breeze. Plus I got to watch It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia on the ceiling TV. Generally speaking, the folks in the office were super cool and regular neighborhood people that made me feel really comfortable. No canned speeches or fake BS. Just people being their awesome selves and not trying provide a cookie cutter (or what has become an old fashioned) dental experience. I love that they referred to me by my first name the minute I walked in (as if they all had prepped beforehand with all my information so they could make me feel welcome!) All of the wonderful things being said about Dr. Bernal and his staff at East Austin Dental are 100% true. I've seen Dr. Bernal 3 times now, and I have never been to a better dentist (not even close, and I'm 40 years old). From the gorgeous office, to the sweet, caring staff (Lindsey is the coolest person ever!), to the kind, gentle dental professionals - everything was absolutely beyond what I had anticipated. I didn't even feel like I was in a medical setting. I felt just as comfortable and at ease there as I do at a Starbucks or even at a friend's house. That's saying A LOT, considering I was getting an extremely painful, cracked molar replaced with a crown! Oh, btw, I paid way less than I would have paid anywhere else for the same procedure! I drive about 45 minutes from San Marcos to see Dr. Bernal, and I am moving to San Antonio soon...but I will still go to East Austin Dental rather than take a chance on another dentist.
