Dropped car off for state inspection on Monday afternoon. Was told what was needed for repair and that it would be ready by 3pm on Tuesday. At the time, I was quoted $650. I had to call and check on the car Tuesday afternoon only to be told they had ordered the wrong part and might not be able to get it done before the end of the day. Apparently they DID get the right part because they called just before closing and said the car was ready. I got there only to be given a bill for $800. When I disputed this I was told that the previous quote was with the wrong part price and this was the correct part price. At no point was this "new price" discussed or approved. P.S.- That night I checked online, the part my car needed was in stock at the Advance Auto parts store that is DIRECTLY across the street from this place! Ignore this at your own experience or expense. Had an ALIGNMENT "Supposedly" done at 40 west auto on my Hyundai. Less than a week after picking up the car, it was steering/drifting right even on the on a straight/flat roadway. So upon bringing this to their attention, they downright blamed the issue on the car's suspension. Again, as I informed them that the suspension system (e.g. front/rear struts) were brand new, they blamed it on some vague structural issue. But they were kind enough offer to "Help me" to Diagnose the structural issue for a generous $100. I say "Thanks, but No Thanks" I won't let the shop with a "Vested Interest" in finding a problem that justifies their "Malignment" . FYI If you fall for their quoted prices, you'll be amazed with their added charges that push up your total. This is partly my fault for NOT heading the warning signs (on on the day I brought in my car) when a client came in to complain of inept or faulty repairs less than a week after the job. After a drive and cursory scan to determine the noise I was hearing, it was recommended to get other work done. I signed off on the paperwork. My wife went here for an inspection. The car passed everything except it needed "rear shocks". Now, mind you, the car rides perfect. So I ask the guy on the phone "how did you diagnose bad shocks?" "There's fluid on them." Apparently once you see fluid of any type on the shock, it can't pass Maryland state inspection. So they quote us $330 to replace perfectly good shocks. (I declined) I've worked as a tire tech at National Tire and Battery back in the day. Did about a year there. That followed 2 years of automotive technical training, completely rebuilding several engines, and even changing a head gasket in a parking lot somewhere in Tennessee. The "you need shocks" thing is the most common money making scheme used at auto shops. The industry says you should replace shocks every 60,000 miles, even though they rarely fail before the car is finally sent to the scrap heap. And if they do fail, it's usually just 1 shock and its OBVIOUS (vibration, uneven tire wear, etc). When you see a car with 1 wheel hopping up and down at highway speeds, 99% it's a bad shock. And the car is probably a 10+ year old beater. I got the hell out of there as fast as possible. (Oh yea, got overcharged by $10 for the bill too...) I made the mistake of reading the Yelp reviews after visiting this nightmare of a shop. Oops. Don't be as stupid as I was. Just don't go to this place. read more

This is the worse place I've ever been too in my life. Let start saying I called there to ask the pricing of a state inspection he said $95.00 mins you I called last week and it was $80.00 I know this world is going up in pricing but not in 7 days lol. Anyway I'm like whatever I need it done so I drive it up there on a Saturday which is first come first serve get there for 9:32am dropped off my keys. Gave me no eta just I'll call you. So on Saturday I know they close earlier then during the week. So I seen they closed at 4pm and I checked my watch it was 4:05 and no call. So I called three times and no answer I'm like oh hell no y'all got my car you gonna answer this phone. Called again guess they checked the caller Id this time and Mr Kim answered and tells me he will call me back in 20 mins. Mr Kim the rudest person in life which seems to be the only person who you can talk to about work and then he has his secretaries taken calls like an answering service. Anyway 1 hour goes by and he calls and says your car is ready I'm like okay soooo what's happening. He like yeah it didn't pass I'm like okay so why it didn't pass he like I'll text you and hung up. I get the list and I'm like what Battery hold down, loose lamp light, lug nuts, 2 back tires, one left strut in the rear, and led headlights. I'm like this is crazy but okay. I call the next day and say let's I get it except the tires. Get the work done and now I'm picking the car up they tell me the price and think imma just hand my card off I said umm where the price breakdown he hands me the paper and first think I see $125 MSI so I say what's that he said the inspection cost I'm like oh naw I was quoted 95$ he said who told me I'm like your secretary who else and I pointed to him cause this my money I'm pointing everyone and thing out. He change the price then I look over more stuff and everything else seem okay. Anyway fast-word pick up my car and my rear back tire making a crazy noise the tire shop won't put a tire on because of this. I take it back within 15 mins and Mr Kim acting like he don't know who I was child I went off. Oh let me pull my receipt and show you who I am I'm the $724.48 customer (like I'm assigned to a number not name) . I'm telling him something wrong he gonna say give me keys and fill out papers and I will see. Umm no is what I said go in your file and pull customer $724.48 out and continue it from there. Then he realize I wasn't playing with him Mr Kim get to rubbing his head and fixing that face mask cause I wasn't leaving nor was he driving my car. Cause he did enough at this point. He gonna say I gotta wait sir I waited 2 days I'm not waiting. Then flicks me off and thought I didn't see it oh baby I called him out real fast and he got real quiet. Anyway I said I will give you 5 mins and I'll be at the car waiting while letting him know he got the right person on the wrong day cause I was beyond upset. I told him it will take 5 mins and I'm driving. He comes out in 3 mins and some seconds and slams my door oh I told him you will be fixing that too if it breaks. Took a ride literally 500 feet from the front door and he like I hear it and then said ok stop and we go back I said no we going for a ride you gonna hear everything to understand. He takes the car back and get to working to make it right and guess what. Still gotta wait another day because someone did something wrong. If you really want to get ripped off so much like crazy then this place would be a great place! I have never seen extremely dishonest mechanics as much as them! I spoke to few people that had use them in the past for getting inspection, they said they always find something funny to fail the inspection so have you come back and charge for re-inspection fee (which is usually free at many inspection places) they even charged me the 3rd re-inspection fee! Yeah they did! Including the 2nd inspection fail reason was my tires need Alignment! While I was waiting for my inspection and reading the newspapers in the waiting area I found one of the newspaper in Korean and had discount deal on Tire Alignment and after my Tire Alignment was done I presented the Coupon Deal but the guy at the desk said I need to see how much It's gonna be your total after applying this coupon, when I saw the total of the alignment cost it ended up to be even more expensive than what they originally quoted me, I ask them why they said because we charge up to $30 in alignment supply fee so here is gonna be your total! I have never ever heard a place charge extra extra fee for Alignment supplies????!!!!! They rip you off under any new fee and rates so they can charge you more and more! I went to 40 West Auto Repair for an oil change and state safety inspection. The inspection failed on a few items which I believe should not have been failed on. I belive the main points that the gentleman failed the inspection on were failed just to generate reapir revenue for the shop. This however is not totally why I am giving the bad review. One of the items that John (the inspector) failed me on was a leaking pressure line for my poower steering line. I believe him slightly as the line in question had a lot of residue on it. However, I cleaned off the line except for a little bit right at the top of the line where the line connects to the power steering pump. He failed me agaub ib the reinspection. When I confronted John and told him to show me where it was leaking he pointed to where he saw residue. I asked him if he was basing his fail off the residue and he said the line was essentially dirtier the first time he inspected it. This makes it evident that he is not taking the time to actually inspect it and that he is not taking the time to actually inspect the line, as he was not able to produce actual proof of an active leak. I will not be taking my car back for a reinspection there and spend anymore money with them. I am going somewhere else and paying for a complete new inspection because of the way they do business. read more

I took my vehicle here to be inspected. They nitpicked to an extent that I have never experienced before in my life and then, conveniently, offered to fix all of the extremely minimal imperfections for an exorbitant rate. It would seem they are operating a shop that runs on dishonesty and greed, and should thus be avoided. I wish I had! Now I'm stuck having to make all of these petty fixes, or shell out more money to have it reinspected at an honest shop (wherever that may be!). 7/1/13: UPDATE: I can now add another detail about this place that corroborates the dishonesty. Since they did not make any cash on the repairs they claimed where necessary (They were so small and easy I could do them myself, yet they wanted to charge $300 for it), they tagged on a re-inspection fee that I was not informed of beforehand. So even though their upfront price makes it looks like they're charging $10-20 less then everyone else on inspections, they are actually charging more, since once they create a way to fail your vehicle, they'll be cashing in on the extra fee. read more

Ended up being closer to six. A few other things: really dirty footprints left on my floor mats, some random bolts were left on my cars running boards, they also gave me incorrect information saying I had to return to the MVA when in fact I only needed to go to a title store after my state inspection. DO NOT come here for state inspections. When I first got my inspection done they had a full list of repairs that needed to be fixed so my inspection failed. He gave me an estimate cost for all the repairs which totaled over $1,200 dollars. I went to a different mechanic to see if I could get a better cost on the repairs and they told me that half the things on the list didn't have any issues whatsoever! I only paid half the cost for repairs (just a little over 600) Then I went back to 40 west lube n tune and without any word they passed my inspection. These people are crooks! They will tell you that you need repairs on something you don't. DO NOT GO! I REPEAT, DO NOT GO! Then just to be on the shady side, they will work on your car in the back without it being visible to customer sight. I have been a customer of 40 West for years for approx 5 years for basic oil changes and maintenance. I had use them for a State Inspection and I was ripped off , not once but twice. The first car I was told and paid $800 so that the car could pass. Since it was a 1999 Mazda, I trusted that they were being honest. I took a second car there for an inspection. I asked Tony to tell me if the car was worth repairing. I assumed they test drove the car, etc., I was told that they car was older and needed some new things. Again, I paid $800 for the to pass and 3 weeks later, I paid $600 for other repairs. It's obvious to me now that the either they didn't bother to drive the car or they would have known that it was misfiring or something was wrong with the transmission. As a female, I think they took me for a costly ride and I will never use them again! read more

I will have to go along with many of the other reviewers for this shop. HORRIBLE! After my last experience I will not be back and will be warning others I know to find a shop that is more knowledgeable and puts an effort in resolving customer complaints. I took my car in to check the tpms light. The shop adjusted the tire pressure and reset the light. The next morning I drove it, the light came back on again. I took the car back again and the shop did the same thing (which was idiotic if it did not work the first time) and was told if the light comes back on to have the sensors replaced. To NO surprise the light came back on the next morning I drove the car. A day or two later I ended up looking up issues that are associated with the tpms light and came across others suggesting that some dash cams interfere with the tpms signal. I was not sure how, but figured it was worth a try (keep in mind that the dash cam remained in my car when I received service both times). I took the dash cam out of my car and the light immediately went off and has not been on since. Although the shop only charged $15.00 it should not have costed anything if they did not do anything to solve the problem and could not come up with a proper diagnosis that could get the light to go off. The repair shop refuses to refund my money although nothing they did for my car worked and seems to not believe the idea that the dash cam was blocking the signal to my sensors. Apparently it solved the problem and made the light go off on its own so everything the shop did was not needed. I would have appreciated if they just said they did not know what the problem was and did not charge people for things they don't know to resolve. There seems to have been a change in staff from a few years ago when the place actually used to be decent. If they do not want to be bothered with resolving customer complaints...this is definitely not the right profession for them. Their suggestion to replace my sensors would have costed at least $160 or more and I am sure it still would NOT have solved the problem and I would have wasted more money. I was told the first time I took my car that nothing was wrong with the sensors....so why replace them? Glad I only wasted $15 and not more. I will not be returning to this shop and would have given 0 stars if it was an option. If you want to gamble away your money...then this would be the place. I took my sister there with her car because the inspection was cheap she has an older model they found things wrong, nit picky things but one real thing so we took it to the family mechanic and they fixed it we go back they say it was done incorrectly and charge a fee we show them the receipt he still insists it's wrong. We go back to our mechanic he checks even has his boss check it's perfect we take it back a third time it's fine even though no one touched a thing. Then last week I bought in my vehicle it's only a couple years old I just knew they weren't going to find anything wrong but nope he said I needed one new tire (for a ridiculous amount) and my battery cables weren't tight and my battery holder wasn't tight!! My tires are a set how is one tire bad I couldn't tell the difference I even did the coin test but hey I'll play along. Got a newer tire elsewhere and tightened the cables he charges me $10 more dollars to tell me the cables still aren't tight enough. But for $15 he'll tighten them for me, plus another $10 for re-inspection. The mechanic from a nearby gas station tightened them as far as possible for free. This place is a rip off. read more

I have been here a few times to get different things done to my car over the years. They are close and convenient. However, on my last visit I took my car back to them to get my front light changed because it went out again. They released it back in 2017 when it went out. I don't think the light should have gone out since it was a little over a year that I got it replaced the first time. To get the light replaced in 2017 was a little over 100 dollars and I believe they told me like a few dollars less to replace 1. I believed it because I called the dealership and they quoted me a higher price so I just asked them to replace them both. I thought it was more expensive because they have to take off the whole bumper and put it back on but I really don't know. This time I was told 25 dollars to replace the light. I mentioned the price I paid in 2017 and the guy in the front told me it was because I got both of them replaced at once back then. I only got one replaced this time. It's a dishonest business. Idk how much it really cost to get a light replaced but 25 dollars seems like a lot let alone 100. read more

I took my car in to be diagnosed for clicking sounds when reducing speed or breaking and they told me it was because I needed new front breaks and rotors...After they finished the work I picked up my car and the noise was still occuring and a man named Alex told me verbatim, "Oh, well your car wasn't fully diagnosed". I had been to this shop on 02/25/2015 as My car needed an alignment as it was going to the left as I drove it , after they performed the service I paid them and left as I drove to Columbia I noticed a vibration to the steering wheel, and when I checked on the alignment the car had the same issue it went to the left as I let go the steering wheel.I drove the car on I-95 just to check it further but it was confirmed,next day I went to the shop and mentioned about the problem the Asian guy on the counter tried to tell me that nothing was wrong with the alignment it was the uneven road or there must be some other issue ,when I requested him to ask the service person to look at the problem he said we charge 45 dollars to inspect the car and started making excuses saying he could not make me understand.these people are a bunch of shady characters who just want to rip people off. do you want to go to a place where You pay for a service and dont get it ?
