I recently came to Federal Motors on two separate occasions. The first, to get a routine oil change. The second, just a few days later after I got a screw in my tire and also noticed some odd shaking when I braked (when it rains it pours, am I right?). This place has been here for years and is family owned and operated. The owner is a really nice guy with great attention to detail. The oil change was completed within a matter of hours and I also opted for filter replacements. It all came in around $100. When it came to the tire, I was disappointed when the other technician failed to patch the correct tire. He patched the spare instead of the tire with the screw in it which was sitting in my trunk. Despite my telling them this on my way in to drop off the car, it wasn't completed properly and I only noticed once I returned home and had to turn right back around again. That being said, the issues with the brakes and rotors were handled well. The shaking in my car has stopped all together and it was about $600 to fix it all. I compared this against my bill from my other auto shop that did my brakes three years ago and Federal Motors was slightly cheaper. While my second visit was far from perfect given the situation with the tire, I trust that it was just an honest mistake since the spare actually did need patching. I even chatted up a fellow customer in the waiting area who mentioned she'd been coming there for over 25 years and it was the only place she trusted. That actually restored my faith a bit. I'm willing to return to Federal Motors, they seem decently priced and they are a lot closer than my other mechanic. My oldest daughter said the mechanic was able to move the mirror with the interior control. He checked for mechanical and electrical issues anyway, and none was located. It was possible that some sort of debris was blocking the up and down movement. By manually moving the mirror every time she drove the car, it might have loosened and disposed of the debris. The shop didn't charge her anything, not even a diagnostic fee. The no charge was impressive in this modern age. My daughter was grateful that an honest, friendly, and respectful auto shop is located in her neighborhood. She no longer has to drive her SUV to her old mechanic in Columbia for repair. I have a 10-year-old Acura that I usually take to Acura or Honda for maintenance and repairs. I found this place on Yelp and decided to bring my car here for an oil change. My car was also making a really loud sound that another mechanic diagnosed as the alternator and would cost $900 to fix. Well it turns out that it was NOT the alternator and Federal Motors fixed whatever issue it was and changed my oil for waaaayyyy cheaper than originally quoted. I had a problem with a screeching noise in the hood of my father's car. I brought it in because my friend said it sounded like a problem with the timing belt - and if the belt is loose and comes apart while driving back to NY, the cost of repairs would be much more than getting it done nearby in baltimore. I look on Yelp and find federal motors to bring my car in the next morning to see what their diagnosis is. I arrive and the lady, Kim, tells me the shop is swamped and they can't get to my car for the next two days. That's understandable. The next day, I get a call from Chris (who I assume is one of the mechanics) and he tells me the noise came from a "crank case evacuation valve" where it had to do with some "intake of air" - though I am able to drive the car. I ask them to start on the work after Chris tells me he 100% guarantees this is what is making the noise and quotes me a $560 job. I text my friend the same words I wrote in quotes, and he asked me multiple times, "are you sure?" Because he believed the sounds didn't match up from the video i sent over to him two nights ago. I call federal motors asking them to speak with my friend to get a second opinion because there may be an off chance the sound federal motors heard died down when they began to diagnose the problem. I get put on hold. 10 seconds later, the Chris fella tells me they won't work on my car, and he advises me to go to the dealer instead. He then tells me the car can be picked up by the end of the day (they close at 5, and I don't get off work until 5 - a minor inconvenience). I just had a coolant problem on my personal vehicle, which i had to bring to a shop 4 times in 6 months because none of the repairs directly addressed the problem - this is why I was driving my father's car. So in my attempts to bring in a second opinion to avoid going through a similar hassle, I was told to go elsewhere when I wanted to make sure all foreseeable areas were inspected. I didn't feel like explaining this story of mine to them when i arrived. I just picked up the keys to the car and drove off - luckily, they expressed the same curt manner. UPDATE: I drove the car up to NY (on 11/15) and brought it to a mechanic I've been seeing for a few years. He told me the noise was coming from an 'idler pulley' - the total cost of the work was 136$ including tax (versus the diagnosis of 560$ of the crank case evacuation valve). After replacing the pulley, there's no longer a screeching noise coming from the vehicle. On the bright-side, at least Federal Motors didn't tell me it was a timing belt issue. read more

I needed a headlight replaced; Goodyear quoted me at $56 w/labor and it cost me $25 at Federal. No brainer. I dropped my car off at 6pm one night and my husband picked it up at 5pm the next day. Chris, the owner, is a truly honest mechanic who I have been to many times. His prices are reasonable, and he only recommends work if you really need it. After trying another mechanic across the street from my work, who was very expensive, screwed up an expensive clutch replacement, and did not stand behind thier work (see my other reviews for details), I realize how valuable a mechanic Federal Motors is. The only downside is that he is a victim of his own success and it can be tough to get an appointment. Federal motors is really a great garage. I have taken my family's 5 cars there for routine maintenance and repairs. I have never been less than completely satisfied! Recently I accidentally dropped the cap of the coolant overflow reservoir into the engine compartment and could not retrieve it. After freaking out for several minutes I slowly drove to Federal Motors in the middle of their busy day. After I explained the problem to Kim at the front desk she summoned Chris. Despite the fact that I had no appointment and he was in the midst of working on another vehicle he stopped what he was doing to help me! He spent 15-20 minutes fooling with car until the cap fell out of the engine compartment and on to the ground I was truly impressed with his willingness to help me "no questions asked"! My car wouldn't start on Thursday at noon, and while I waited for a tow I contacted Federal Motors and Kim told me they could take a look at it Friday hopefully. After taking my car to Goodyear one too many times, and having them tell me I needed a boatload of work done, I decided that I was not giving them another dime. They are too expensive and they always find something to fix. Long story short, I like the guy at Federal Motors. He's absolutely swamped -- which is a good sign -- but he seems like a straight shooter, and his prices were much better than Goodyear. The downside? His shop is full every day and don't plan on getting your car early. Took him a full day to get mine on the lift for a checkup and another full day to get the work done.
