The ordering worked OK, could do it online, but there was no place to enter any dietary preferences or special instructions, which made it a bit more complicated b/c I wanted to request certain changes. I had to call the restaurant after placing the order to ask about it, which was fine, but I thought it was a bit of a loss for the restaurant in one sense. They would've charged extra for the bread I requested, but they waived it b/c I had already placed the order. Good for me, I guess, but it would've been good if the option was in the ordering platform. That said, the food was great! I ordered a jerk chicken sandwich, called to ask for no mayo or brioche, which I didn't realize included fries (nice bonus), and an order of plantains. All of it was delicious, and I would probably go again, perhaps more likely to order on the phone or in person. read more

This place was recommended from my good friend while we were in Philly for a concert. We all walked to the restaurant as a large group as it was close to our Air BnB. This is a black owned establishment so we were super excited to try it out since they came earlier in the day for brunch. We were seated quickly once we arrived. We ordered wings along other things that I failed to take pictures of ‍. The food came out very hot which is a plus because I eat slow. Everything was really good and seasoned well. I ordered pick up from 48th Street Grille while I was in the area and I'm glad I did! I ordered the curry chicken with cabbage and got the upgraded side of garlic mashed potatoes. The garlic mashed potatoes were so good! Perfect in texture and it was a big portion of it. The platter was heavy- it was a lot of food and worth the price. I prefer the curry sauce to be thicker, but it was still very good and satisfied my Jamaican husband's craving for Jamaican food. read more

So I want to say that the four stars is for the food because everything that I tasted was delicious literally DELICIOUS. The service that we received from the waitress was also very good as well. I get the feeling that it is a family owned restaurant, so they are in need of a little bit of help as there is only one person who does the seating food ordering brings out the food as well as the check she was a very kind older woman and was honest with me when I asked her which was better the brioche French toast, or the stuffed French toast she said brioche. But if I'm not mistaken, the French toast is not on brioche bread, but it was still good I did have the French toast and it was very good. You can taste the vanilla the cinnamon it was sweet without being overly sweet, so I did not need any additional syrup. I also had the scrambled eggs and bacon. The bacon was not the cheap extra salty bacon. It was cooked to perfection. The scrambled eggs where your standard scrambled eggs they were good as well. My friend got the chicken and waffles. I did not taste their waffle because I am not a huge fan of Belgium. However, the chicken tenders were season and fried to absolute perfection!! The tables are very small, so it is a bit crowded. If you order multiple things, the sweet plantains taste it like your regular sweet plantains as well, but they were good. The only reason that I did not get five stars is because the chef came out to ask people how their meal was. When he came out. He looked at my friend and asked, was it his first time, and he told him no, but it was mine I tried to speak to him, and he wouldn't even look at me so I felt that was a tad bit rude, but the food is good so I would go back for that. They also play good music as well. One of the best things that I ever tasted on the plate was that House made whip cream it was so delicious. read more

A (Jamaican) friend was visiting from out of town and I wanted to take her to a place to get authentic Jamaican food. Looking at various reviews, I ended up choosing this place. (This was about a year and a half ago, by the way.) When we arrived, the place was empty, which seemed strange, as there were many positive reviews. We went inside, were greeted nicely and shown to a table, but we had come to take food out. We went to the rear to face where the cooks were and my friend ordered her food; I didn't get anything. She seemed to have a friendly conversation with the person who had welcomed us while waiting for her order. I heard her make the point that she wanted the food spicy. (I think she ordered some chicken.) As a matter of fact, she soon reminded them again that she wanted it not sweet, but spicy. I paid for the order and we left. When she opened the box and tasted the food, she turned to me and said "This is sweet! I wanted spicy! You heard me tell them, didn't you?" I replied I had -- TWICE. I offered to go back to return it with her, but she just wanted to forget it and eat as we had been driving around all day. I was trying to give my Jamaican friend a nice welcome to Philadelphia, finding some authentic Jamaican food for her to enjoy, and instead disappointed her in her introduction to a wonderful city and also in her confidence and reliability in wonderful me. I hope this was an isolated incident, but if she decides to return, I'm sure I will be able to find a better and more pleasurable dining experience for her, as I value our relationship. read more

My sister and I have eaten here several times. And have enjoyed our meals. However my Sister ordered "Rasta Pasta w/jerk chicken. The sauce was "soupy" and tasteless. We spoke with the chef/owner who was very unfriendly and annoyed at our request to "fix it". All he did was put cheese on the dish. Sadly his demeanor and failure to treat us like valued returning customers made us write this review & rate our experience accordingly. Such a shame. We hope he reads this & is prompted to do better. Was looking for some good woman owned restaurants to try and found this spot. Really good Caribbean food! The cornbread is pretty pricey at $6 for one square but at least it tasted good. Usually I have to add butter but this one had the perfect combo of butter and honey already. The wings were good but could've been cooked a little longer. The Rasta pasta was absolutely delicious. I've never had Rasta pasta before but I will definitely order it again. I had the one with chicken but I'm definitely gonna try shrimp next because it was so good. read more

Solid flavor profile, and exceeded my expectations for Caribbean-American cuisine. As this is far from your typical hole in the wall Jamaican joint, I assumed the flavors and spice level would be subdued, but 48th street grille gladly proved me wrong. What I ordered: Dark meat jerk chicken platter, 10 island wings, baked Mac and cheese and beef patty. The portions were hefty and almost made me forget I paid over $20 for jerk chicken :) Back to the flavors, spice level on jerk was a 3.5/5. The jerk gravy had notes of cardamom and all-spice, which gave it a nice but subtle hint of sweetness. The sauce on the island wings is bomb! Reminded me of general tso's chicken but better. * Yes they are open for takeout or delivery during covid-19* We chose to "dine" with 48th Street Grille for this past weekend's Yelp's Big Night Out and our weekly covid-19 supporting small businesses takeout. We ordered the fried dumplings $3, vegetable spring roll served with ginger soy dip $8, spicy conch fritters $12, on the bayou fried catfish and waffles $17, catfish and grits $19. The most disappointing dish that I don't recommend to order are the veggie spring rolls, I give that a 1 out of 5 star. For $8 you get 3 small fried spring rolls (see photo), and the taste does not justify the price. Whereas I could say that I have always been okay with the $12 for 5 conch fritters because at least those are unique and also served with a mango slaw, unlike the spring rolls. The fried catfish we both got was delicious. The breading was well seasoned, and not too heavy. The breading did not mask the delicious and flaky catfish beneath. The bayou sauce that comes with both dishes is what makes the dish! The fried dumplings we got out of pure curiosity, they are more like bread rolls than what most of us would think of as a dumpling. They were fine but probably not something we'd order again. Overall, I recommend 48th street grille as a nice option for dine in or carry-out in the west Philadelphia neighborhood. 48th Street Grille is a beautiful, spacious establishment located in the heart of West Philadelphia. The wonderful, personable and super friendly Chef Carl is the mastermind behind this incredible gem. The fact that he always comes out from the kitchen and makes his rounds to all his patrons is such a great touch. He makes you feel very much at home as if you're in his own personal dining room. I came here with a friend for dinner and also for brunch and he has done this on both occasions. You can also B.Y.O Wine, champagne, and beer ($5 cork fee for wine/champagne, $3 cork fee for beer). Such a diverse menu with many options to choose from! When I came here for dinner I had the stew chicken, cabbage, and rice and peas. My friend had the curry chicken, cabbage, and white rice. Both dishes were incredible! We shared a side of mac and cheese and we thoroughly enjoyed it as well. We brought our own rosé to compliment our dinner. We came back about a month later to check out their brunch (especially since Chef Carl came out to our table during dinner and completely SOLD us on why we should come). I had the fried catfish with grits (served with island grits and garlic cream sauce on the side). I added collard greens for an extra $3. My friend had the Jamaican Breakfast (ackee & saltfish served with collard greens, fried plantains and fried dumplings). We devoured our meals and washed it down with a tropical sangria that I made. Both dishes were outstanding and of course Chef Carl came out to make sure we were enjoying our experience. I highly recommend this place so please visit if you're ever in the Philly area. read more

I really want to like this establishment. It has all the things I like to see in my community. It's minority owned, in the community with other community stores, has a great chef/owner and is to get to via car or public transportation. However this was a mediocre experience. Our waiter, although very kind, seemed flustered and not entirely knowledgeable of the menu. The chef introduced himself and was amazingly kind. He spent quite a bit of time talking to my niece who is an aspiring chef. He gave her some great advice and suggestions for her future. The food: I had a half jerk chicken with cabbage and red beans and rice. My son and I shared the meal as we were not terribly hungry and he's not a big eater (yet, he's 12). The table shared jerk wings and conch fritters as an appetizer. My sister has curry goat, my niece curry chicken and my father oxtails. We all had cabbage and some sort of rice. I really enjoyed the side items but was not impressed with the jerk chicken. It had good spice but didn't have a savory taste that lasted after the initial bite. My niece and sister thought the same about their food. My father enjoyed his. I'll definitely give them another try and hope for the best. read more

The island wings are so popular that it took me weeks to get them delivered because they would always be sold out. I eagerly dug in to them once I finally got my hands on them and they did not disappoint. I quickly devoured the juicy succulent wings and licked my fingers clean afterwards. My side caesar salad looked good, but the croutons had gone soft. I like them crunchy. The cornbread was a big tasty piece. Some menu highlights: - Rasta pasta - Island wings - Oxtails - Brown stew chicken - Jerk chicken - Cabbage - Callaloo - Red beans and rice It's pretty much all bangin tho. I've been there at least a dozen times and every time I think "I've gotta get this more often". Also, and I cannot recommend this highly enough: They offer whole jerk turkeys and platters for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's nothing short of amazing. When I walked in, I was warmly greeted and welcomed as if I were in Jamaica, and that felt so good to my spirit. Miscommunication led me to place an order at the counter, and within 5 minutes of my order, a server brought my meal - oxtails with butter beans, cabbage, peas and rice, and plantains, with ice cold sorrel and a sample of the best ginger beer I've ever had. The sweetness works if you're in the mood for sweet wings. Tangy and flavorful. + Jerk chicken - A perfect pairing with the braised cabbage and red beans/rice - all of which were seasoned well. The owner always made a special point to stop at each table and inquire about each guest's dining experience. It sort of fell off of my radar for a time... but let me tell you. It's BACK. Decent food at an insanely high price. Got the saltfish and the cornbread waffle + catfish. The saltfish wasn't like what I am used to before- very chunky and overall wasn't my thing. My auntie love love love this place. This is our go to spot whenever we just want to chat and relax over some delicious Caribbean brunch followed by a glass of wine or should I say pineapple rum. 48th street grille delivers in terms of quality food. We always come for their brunch and so far I've ordered their biscuits and gravy as well as their classic Jamaican Breakfast. I always wanted to try saltfish and ackee, caused it's so raved about and I'm glad I did, it was delicious, flavorful and healthy, I felt like I was transported to Jamaica without having to pay for the flight and hotel stay. Their sausage biscuits and gravy was also good. My auntie also loved her food she had the omelette both times and we both like the extra spices that they add to their breakfast dishes which offers that authentic Jamaican twist. Oh and I can't forget our little made up Mimosa drinks which consist of mango juice and pineapple rum! Yes this place is BYOB! 48th street grille offers great service, food comes out fast and hot and our waiter always provides service with a smile. Well I know for sure this is my spot every time I come to Philly! My favorite dish was seasoned and marinated to perfection, the escovitched red snapper was absolutely delicious! We wanted to suck the fish bones but realized we wasn't at home. The fish is 5 stars!!!The jerk chicken quesadilla, very good. It had this sweet tang to it and the tortilla was fluffy. FYI if you get some of the sweet chili plum sauce with it, it takes the taste over the edge. Service was great and professional. This place is a two thumbs up!!!!
