This place grabs your attention as soon as you pull in the parking lot!!! They have a huge area with interesting artifacts and an old school bus in the outdoor seating area! Inside it's spacious with booths and tables and an indoor fire pit! The service was excellent, the menu is as varied and large as the space is spacious, and the merchandise store is fun to shop in. The pretzel is hands down The BEST pretzel I've had anywhere. And I like to try pretzels everywhere. You know it's good when you take 1/2 back to your room with you to eat the following morning and it's still Good! ( I mean, I did pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, but it was still Good! ) Mom and I ordered 2 completely different things and shared - Buffalo Meatloaf because we wanted some red meat and a Buddha Bowl because we wanted some fruits and veggies too. Best of both worlds as both were fantastic! (In fact, as I write this review over 3 weeks later, my mouth is salivating. I want to go back.) We also got a taste of the Yak burger. First and foremost, HUGE shout out to Jason and Kayla (maybe spelling is not correct). Glorious folks and makes a normal 20-30 minute wait worth it for their kindness. Now for the not so grand report. This is my last trip to ANY 49th state, here or Anchorage. I would say, as a Fairbanksian, I have been to at least one of the locations maybe a dozen times or more. Never again. Ever, ever again. Approximately 5 days ago I called the Denali location because we had eaten there passing through and my husband had left his glasses. Yep, the gentleman I spoke with on the phone found them, and conversation proved they were ours and they were there. We told them we would no be back until Saturday since we were traveling much farther south and then back home. We arrived as stated. We went in, asked for a table and the specs. Kayla said she remembered them and since they were not behind the front desk they must be upstairs. Nope. No specs. Jason, took my order for drinks as my husband waited. And waited. And waited some More. Finally a manager said he could not find them and my husband came to the table. Then the disrespect and dismissive behavior began. Another "manger" came. He stated that it was this was his second day and had not seen the glasses. It had been over a week and was not his fault. I said it was not a week, and he interrupted me to say 5 or 7 days is the same thing. Then when I said you had them, we called, he said no, his second day and HE DID NOT HAVE THEM, he had never seen them (honestly attempting to place in the conversation the possibility lack them ever being there) As I attempted to explain the "you" in a customer's statement is the establishment's he closed his little notebook that he said he would take down our information to "contact us if found" and said he would get our drinks (pick up the tab) and walked away. We asked Jason, one of truly quality folks we had encountered, for a GM. He said he would get them. Another (this is number three...) manager appears. We tell our tale, but now with emphasis on the unprofessional, rude, and condescending behavior of the 2-day manager. He was understanding but unfortunately, that was his boss. Sigh. Oh my. So for burgers and dishes that are " ostentatious" and often not representative of Alaska, I am done. We left, thanked both Jason and Kayla and went to Totem Inn just 1/4 mile north. It is a Healy original. Not an import. Quality burgers, good bartending and not nearly the crowds. Winner. What were we thinking stopping at the glitzy seasonal newcomer? The outdoor area of this place during summer is AWESOME. no idea what it's like in the winter. The indoor area reminds me of every small lodge I have ever been to in the interior of Alaska! A couple thins to note if you're first experience with 49th State is in Anchorage: 1. The menu here in Healy is smaller, but similar. 2. The beer list is smaller. But it appears to rotate quickly. I saw them changing menus while I was there. 3. The food is just as tasty as downtown and every bit as fresh. 4. It's tight quarters for seating. Which is saying something if you've been in the bar area of the Anchorage location. It was fast, efficient service. Our server was good but visibly stressed. So nice we came here twice! We had such a great experience the first time we dined here, we came back the very next day. Both times our servers were very friendly and got our food and drinks out to us quickly. The outdoor area also has a couple fire pits, tables and chairs and corn hole. Incredible place to eat near Denali National Park! If you're in the area, this place is a MUST. Food was delicious. It was one of the best foods we had our whole Alaska trip. We ordered the crab grilled cheese, seafood chowder, fries, and impossible burger. All the food was delicious! I highly recommend the crab grilled cheese. Best crab I've ever had! We ordered some non-alcoholic drinks as well. The strawberry thyme lemonade and blueberry cream soda float were perfect. The ambience of the place was another stand out. The food was really good, and was pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes of the meals and the quality of the food. The crab Mac and Cheese was delicious and had a very hearty amount of crab. The Seafood chowder was also nice and meaty. My friend had the bison and mashed potatoes. She loved the mashed potatoes and said she even enjoyed the leftovers the next day. Quality brewpub with extensive menu to go with their high quality beers. Only real complaint was service being a little slow, but we hit them at peak dinner hour on a Thursday. Bummed that they were out of both their award winning Smoked Lager and Kellerpils, but the Tropic Tundra Double IPA and Seward's Folly Imperial Stout were outstanding, as were the Bavarian Hefeweizen and Belgian Dubbel enjoyed by my wife. My husband and I decided to make a quick stop at the 49th State while heading to Fairbanks and ended up arriving about 20 minutes before they opened. About 10 families waited in line with us for the doors to open and once they did, the restaurant was packed within minutes. So, I suggest arriving early like we did, or making a reservation. When we entered, we were promptly seated and greeted by our server, Nate, who got our drinks within 10 minutes. We got the Strawberry Thyme Lemonade and the Blueberry Cream Soda, which were delicious. For our appetizer, we got the Crab Artichoke Dip. Creamy, crabby, salty deliciousness - with a wedge of lemon on the side to add a little bit of acidity. I got the Free Range Buffalo Meatloaf (just so I could tell people that I know what Buffalo tastes like ) and it was pretty good. It is a HEAVY meal that will have you breaking out in the meat sweats AND worrying about your blood pressure. Drink some water and hope it cancels out. The 'Smōk Lager' Mushroom Demiglace is a bit bitter (I had no idea Smok Lager was beer) but it paired well with the mashed potatoes. The onion crisps on top added a nice crunch and texture to the dish. My husband got the World Famous Yak Burger, which looked delicious. I again, asked for a bite to see what Yak tastes like and personally, it does not taste much different from a regular burger. ‍ But I did feel pretty and accomplished after taking a bite . Perfect if you want to stay a bit on the safe side. All in all, service was great, food was delicious, and the location... the restaurant was absolutely beautiful, and not far from Denali National Park if you want to go sight seeing. Such a great place to gather with friends and family. I love the entrance to this place. So big and open. Theres a fire pit, dart boards, and a bus with a really sad story behind it. The restaurant was really busy. We had to wait about 40 min for a table. But we weren't going anywhere until we have tried the food here. Especially when we tried to eat at the one in Anchorage several times but could never seem to get a seat for all of us ( it was a seat yourself type of situation ) idk why most of the restaurants in downtown Anchorage were like that. Anyway. For my meal I tried the Teklanika which was a flatbread pepperoni pizza. Lol. Fancy name huh. But it was not something worth having a second time. Not even a first time. Lmao. Anyway. I also had the Bavarian handmade pretzel with 49er beer cheese sauce. This pretzel was quite large. And came with a decent amount of cheese. It tasted better than the pizza. This is one of the best breweries I've ever been to in my entire life...and that's more than a few because I travel the world in search of great beers and have been to 202 different breweries. Smok Lager basically changed my life...the service was great and the merch was amazing. I wish they could get to bars and restaurants in California.
