After spending the night in Saguache we had to find a place for breakfast! On a Sunday! And a federal holiday! Endless to say I was very grateful to 4th Street Diner for even being open. We were seated immediately, with plenty of open tables at 8am. The menu is on the smaller side but you just know everything is amazing. I ordered the eggs, sausage patty, home fries, and toast for $8. It was a huge platter of food that I shared with my husband. The homemade sourdough was the best I've ever tasted. Local honey was the icing on the cake. The sausage patty is no frozen Jimmy Dean's patty. This is the real deal, with mild but flavorful spices. They make the seven grain and sourdough bread themselves. I had an over easy egg with sourdough bread. Soo yummy. My husband had a breakfast burrito with no jalapeños and no green Chile. They had our food in less than 10 minutes and we were back on the road with yummy homemade food. It wasn't fancy but it was yummy. If I could leave 0 stars I would. Walked in at noon on a Sunday hoping to get breakfast with a friend before heading home from a weekend trip in the area. We were barely greeted, sat down with water and coffee, then ignored for half an hour until we finally walked out. Both waitresses looked at us multiple times and refused to come by and get our order. They sat multiple other tables and got drinks and orders for tables that came in after us, but would not come back to our table. I can't tell if it was just racism, homophobia, or both, but the prejudice & assumptions made by the staff led to us walking out before we got a chance to even try the food. If you're a person of color (even lighter skin tone), LGBTQ+, have tattoos or piercings, avoid this place at all costs. I'm absolutely appalled at the behavior of the staff. read more

An odd thing I noticed was that they didn't have any honey mustard, bbq sauce, or ice when we asked. Those things are pretty common in diners so I was a bit disappointed in that. We drove 15 minutes out of our way was excited to try this place they were closed at 11:30 and were from Louisiana and headed to Estes Park Colorado. Absolutely lovely staff and breakfast was great; however, the real star of the show was the pie! Typically we wouldn't order pie at breakfast, but it just looked so good! 4th Street has only been opened a week and a day as of today. You would think it has been opened forever as Greg and Esther (owners) were easily serving up a great breakfast. I had Esther's favorite omelete with spinach and feta, homefries were delicious, and homemade bread served with local honey. The Husband had french toast with homemade bread. Coffee was always warm, cup full, and they had a sugar canister on the table. 4th Street is easily going to be a local favorite. They serve lunch, cater, and bake some fabulous looking baked goods. According to Greg, "We serve locally grown foods and grass fed beef. Homemade goodness for breakfast, lunch or your favorite bakery items, like freshly made pies, doughnuts, muffins, biscotti. Breakfast four four. I asked for very over easy eggs and they were perfect. I enjoyed the home style potatoes. My wife was happy with her scrambled eggs too. My friends thought the potatoes needed onion and peppers. That would have been nice but not a deal killer. The toasted bread was excellent. My friend was very happy with the huevos rancheros. He's almost an authority on those. Two people could have shared that large plate. The tortilla was bigger than the plate. What is it with Souther CO and lack of mobile network connectivity? Once again we couldn't check in somewhere because there wasn't 1x let alone 4G... I wasn't hungry yet, but Raz was about ready to tackle any one of the cows in the fields we were driving by and consume the whole thing raw. We had a short moment of network availability, learned that this place was open just ahead in Saguache, set the car GPS, and proceeded to lose signal again a couple miles later. When we pulled up on 4th street, three different generations of local men were lounging outside the restaurant, chatting about the world. It's a homey, small-town habit you never see in the city, so had it not been for the multiple empty tables visible through the front windows, we'd have likely interpreted it as a long waiting line and kept driving. As it was, we exchanged friendly "good morning"s with the locals and headed in. We were an unexpected quantity at 0730 on a quiet Sunday morning, which is, I assume, why the lovely woman running the house was flustered enough to key in the wrong addition on Raz's 4th Street Potato Supreme (for the record, cream gravy is the absolute wrong substance to replace green chile sauce with). The error resulted in having to start the dish over entirely, and thus a half-hour wait between order and eating. Fortunately, my scone made it to the table at the same time as the apology for the mistake, so Raz could at least use my continental breakfast for an appetizer, and as a result had to share his dish with me. We mostly forgave the wait after the first couple mouthfuls. Southern Colorado chile doesn't hold the bite we're used to farther south, but it was the ideal complement to the potatoes, red peppers, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, bacon, and cheese to round and brighten the dish. We grabbed a couple turnovers for the road, which turned out to be well executed flaky pastry around truly excellent locally grown fruit. We were quite glad to see that the business was packed as we were leaving. The food was well worth another visit when we're next up this way. read more

This little diner is AMAZING!!!! My family of 11 was driving through. A lot of the places we tried to eat at had been closed or couldn't accommodate all of us. I called ahead and the Owner Esther and our waitress Rebecca were AMAZING! They got a table out together for us and had us in and our in no time! Food that was ordered were the 4th Street breakfast burrito smothered, BLT's, Pancakes, Cheeseburgers, bacon cheeseburger and Marcos Burger! Talk about heaven in your mouth! Every single dish was amazing! We couldn't stop raving about the food and all wanted to eat more! We also tried the French fries and apple turnover that was fresh out of the oven! Guys, if you are in Saguache and need a place to eat this is the place to stop at! We will most definitely be back! They were so sweet and amazing and made our visit extra special! We have 4 kids in our group and the owner grabbed a big plastic jar of chalk and she went outside and drew on the sidewalk with our kids! Seriously, I am in awe at how at home and welcomed we felt! A friend and I stopped here for breakfast and were so impressed by this place. The people were warm and educated us about the town and surrounding area. Our coffee was served in fun mugs; I got Rosie the Riveter telling me "We Can Do It." The attention we received from our waitress and cook was something I've never experienced before. We truly did feel like it was 1095's Mayberry when we walked in. From the handmade curtains to the old coca-cola ads it was like stepping back in time. It's mostly locals and fun to hear everyone chatting. There is a small staff, so be patient. The bakery counter has lots to choose from and they will package it up to go. We spent about 90 minutes total here in an almost full restaurant. We first noticed only one table had food, everyone else had menus, so it was not a surprise that we waited. When the coffee came, it was tasty! They were generous with refills. The food took a long time to get, as we had anticipated. It looked great, see the pics I posted. Huevos rancheros for me and b&g for husby. From there, and keeping the final star was content, taste and temperature of our plates. It was not really warm at all. There was an inch and a half of retried beans on mine, covered with what tasted like canned condensed soup and undercooked eggs. No potatoes and cheese like the menu said. The b&g had sweet biscuits that contrasted the gravy. I couldn't manage more than one bite. Was it that I was jealous of the next tables pancakes? Maybe, but more than anything I wanted the food to be as good as the atmosphere. I wish this establishment luck and hope it was a one off day. I left hungry read more

I wish I had taken photos of our plates, but we couldn't wait to dig in! oh my gosh....what a great meal! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. It was lightly snowing and the fire was burning to warm the ol' bones. First thing, the service is top notch. Our coffee stayed full and hot as throughout our visit. I ordered the breakfast burrito and took half of it home. The flavor was wonderful and my southern hubby ate every drop of his gravy and biscuits! We live an hour away, but decided this needs to be a regular stop for us. The pastries are simply irresistible,so we are taking some home for later. Where we'll find room, I have no idea!
