I think Mexican restaurants are difficult to review as everyone's individual tastes for Mexican food are so different. We visited 5 de Mayo for a lunch meeting and were happily and promptly greeted. The iced tea wasn't my favorite but the salsa and chips tasted fresh and great. I ordered a lunch burrito bowl and it was very large, with a substantial amount of meat and. Five. DeMayo is my favorite authentic Mexican restaurant that serves alcohol. You walk in and there is a fun ambience in the traditionally, decorated dining room and bar area. Their menu has a wonderful balance of authentic Mexican, specialties, and Americanized Mexican food. We have never left there hungry because the portion sizes are quite generous. Service is always friendly and quick. They make an excellent margarita either on the rocks or frozen and offer daily drink specials. My favorite things to get are the create your own combination or the Flautas de Mexicano. Definitely worth the trip to Allendale. If you are looking for one Mexican restaurant that will make everyone happy this is it. read more

The servers and staff are fantastic, when they opened up their food was authentic and a true delight. Clean restaurant and pleasant ambiance. Then the food quality started to slip. First it was the salsa,it went from fresh to a spicy tomato sauce. Then the fajita's started to look like the vegatables and meat came out of a slow cooker. Our meal looked like it was all pre-made and not fresh. Prices have gone up, but the quality has gone down. We won't be going back because the food quality and preperation is that bad. read more

This place is always really good. I've never had a wait but it can get busy around dinner time. The food is always so good and the veggies are fresh. Their chips and salsa is also really good and I always ask for their spicy salsa that has a good smoky tangy flavor. My favorites are the chicken fajitas and the steak tacos with onions and cilantro. The staff is always friendly and super fast. They restaurant is always clean and the bar area is really nice looking with some fun saddle seats. The meat was very dry in all of our dishes. We had chicken, carnitas, and steak based dishes. The service was also very slow. After 25 minutes of waiting for server to bring us our check we had to ask another. Only thing this place has going for it is the cool vibe of the dining area. read more

This was our first time trying 5 de Mayo. Overall had a nice experience. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They have a nice enclosed patio and it was not too noisy. Service was a little slow, but we also came at peak time so they were pretty busy. Overall would recommend. read more

My husband and I come here for date night at least a couple of times a month. The food and service are outstanding. I read reviews on here that are less than flattering and I have no idea how. This is one of the best Mexican establishments I've ever eaten at. The Quesabirrias & Pollo Toluca are my faves. Best Sangria Margarita EVER! Prices are right in line if not cheaper than surrounding establishments and the chips and salsa (which I can eat 3 baskets of) are a meal in itself. Servers are amazing and if they get to know you, they will come and greet you even if they aren't your server. Love it! read more

I was in town visiting my daughter at GVSU. I picked this place for an early dinner. It was a great! Our server Griselda was very attentive and without asking had what we wanted or needed! She delivered extra napkins when we needed them before we could even ask for them. She was a top shelf server. We loved their fresh salsa and again without asking and just as we finished off the bowl Griselda delivered another bowl of the great salsa. As for our meals, my daughter had a shredded chicken Burrito. She said it was delicious. It was a big serving and reasonably priced. I had the Cameron Supremo. It too was delicious! I will be back to eat here again, I'm just not sure I will be able to try anything else as the meal I had was so good. Worth checking out if you are in the mood for good Mexican food. Just ate here and the food was alright. A couple of disappointments with the food and service. I had the seafood chimichangas for $20... the seafood inside came out slightly frozen inside the warm tortilla covered in cheese sauce. It eventually warmed up, but the first bites were definitely disappointing. My husband ordered the enchiladas, the order was wrong and the meat inside was underdone. The waitress eventually checked on us and made it right giving him what he ordered in a to go box. Our drink order was also wrong. My hubby ordered a Pacifico and he got something else. I liked it and finished it, but she still charged us for her mistake and for the replacement Pacifico. Not awesome. I might come back. My hubby is a hard pass. The whole experience upset him. That is so sad too, because it's one of the few beautiful days to enjoy the outside patio.... Too bad we had to share it with the yellow jackets buzzing around us. Overall, meh. read more

We ate here a couple of weeks ago. This was the best food I've eaten in a long time. I had the fajitas but wanted to skip the tortilla. No problem. Skip the rice, no problem. The fajitas had the best flavor. My husband's burrito was excellent. We live about 50 miles away and plan to eat here at least a couple of times a month. The service was also great. Food is amazing but literally every time my husband has ordered fajitas, they forget his tortillas! It's been 3 times in a row! I don't understand how it can be forgotten every time when they ask specifically what kind of tortillas you want! It's so frustrating and makes him not want to order from there again which is a bummer because like I said, the food is delicious. read more
