It's Mexican food... on par with the Mexican food found in the Allendale region of Michigan. Some things taste better than others. I'm a fan of their lunch special fajitas because you get a good amount of protein for the price. The toppings are fresh. It all tastes good enough. We wanted to come early to try their breakfast, but we went and saw they don't open until 11 am. So, we went somewhere else for breakfast. I think this is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Allendale because the owners are so energetic and friendly. The food always comes out hot. They take pride in their work. read more

This is my third time at El Aztecas and every time I've had a great experience! They have a decent sized seating area and it's not too loud. Their staff are friendly and prompt. Always up for Mexican food. They allowed us to sit on the patio. It does sit by the road but it is shaded and has trees around it so it didn't seem too loud. The service was great! They came often to check on us. The chips and salsa were good. Not the best chips ever but I had two bowls, so obviously I can't complain. Some heat in the salsa they bring out too. I found the menu varied and some similar items cheaper than at other restaurants. They pack the chimichangas with so many tasty fillings and still give the side options. For me to not give a Mexicans restaurant five stars is unheard of. We wanted to try El Azteca out since it's close to home, but sadly, it won't be on our return visit list. I ordered a chicken queso burrito and it was the size of an enchilada. The queso on it was so thin, it was difficult to even see it was there, except for where a tiny bit pooled next to my beans. My husband ordered three hard shell tacos, they came out as soft shells AND were so greasy that the shells were nearly falling apart from the grease by the time the food got to our table. We asked for extra napkins and were each given a single piece of paper towel, folded diagonally, but her bringing the paper towel was the only time we saw her until it was time to pay the bill. If the service was stellar and the food was meh, we could overlook it and try again and vice versa. But it was a dumpster fire all the way around and we won't be back. read more

I also want to say that my mom's burrito was very tasty, according to her. We also ordered a taco salad. 1. The chips and salsa. The salsa was very good. The chips had no salt whatsoever. It was like eating weeds in the woods, cooked over an open fire that people defecated upon. Am I a porcupine? Am I an opossum, that I cannot eat some salt and must lick sticks? I must do this. Remind me of this. Bucket list: lick sticks in Allendale. These chips were a catastrophe. Maybe if you're drunk, they'd taste okayl 2. El Aztecas' taco salad. No lettuce. The "taco salad" was like a taco with 50,000 lbs. of taco crap stuffed between the so-called crispy taco shell. Excuse me, but we'd like a little lettuce in our salad. Americans are genius in this way. And also, please give us some dressing, for Jesus if not for us. Jesus doesn't ask for much, but I do. So serve Jesus next time. El Azteca in Allendale seemed... fine. Fine Americanized Mexican food. Both the menu and the decor reminded me of El Burrito Loco in Grand Rapids on Alpine Ave. Pros: -Host asked if we would prefer a table or booth; appreciate that. -Food came out quickly. -Enchiladas and Fried Ice Cream were good. -Our server and another staff member I interacted with were nice. -Cute, colorful decor. Cons: -Ambient sound was very loud - noise of voices and blender, bouncing around in hard tiled room, rose to bothersome levels. -Server left some dirty plates on the table, even after bringing dessert. -Server did not bring extra plate for shared dessert, so we had to ask a second time. -The menu is so large, I left wondering, what is good here? What's the specialty? I would shrink the menu and concentrate on improving the food / giving the menu some focus. read more

There service has gone down. I have been there many times before and never have had this bad of service. We went there on Cinco de Mayo so I was trying to be patient knowing they were busy. We waited about 25 minutes to get sat which I understood because it was Cinco de Mayo and very busy. Once we got sat our server was with us pretty quickly and chips arrived. We placed 2 margaritas and 2 waters as well as queso. Our queso came out in about 5 minutes which was nice. What started to get us mad was when we waited 25 minutes to even get a water when other tables in the same section as us were receiving their waters and margaritas. Our food came out and then our waters came out relatively at the same time so at that point we were so thirsty we chugged our whole water. At this point we were wondering about our margaritas and she said they were "still making them" when again other tables who had sat down after us received all their drinks, including a margarita tower. After 35 minutes I told her to cancel our margaritas because we were over waiting at that point. I mean who doesn't want a drink with their food?? She never even asked how we wanted the bill and then rudely put one bill on our table that we ended up having to split. Overall, waiting 25 minutes for water and 35 minutes for a margarita AFTER our food comes out is not ideal. read more

I've been to El Azteca twice and both times ordered different items that would test the authenticity of this Mexican restaurant....guess what? They got it! My first visit was an order pickup. I got the steak quesadilla and the tamales de puerco(pork). Oh my word! The BEST tamales I've had since I moved to Michigan. Here's why, the pulled pork inside the tamale was juicy and flavorful. The red sauce spice was on the side, and not overpowering. The tamal itself was plentiful and not dry on the corners. That's right, actually cooked the appropriate amount of time so it's not dry!! These small details is what makes a dish worthy of the caloric intake friends! The steak quesadilla was pretty large, definitely shareable. Here's the inside scope about the cheese. I'm not sure what kind it was, but it was white and melted the way cheese should in a quesadilla. The ratio of steak to cheese was perfect and was blended. It's almost as if the steak was cooked, then the cheese mixed into the steak to melt annnndddd thennnnn put into the quesadilla. Again, small variations in the cooking method that make a difference. The flavor of the steak was also well seasoned, and not full of chunks of fat. I hate that! The next time we visited, we dined in. I enjoy the restaurant decor and the music playing. You can tell that the owners want you to have a fun time and feel like you left Michigan and went to Michoacán(shout out to Rose A.). We ordered tacos de lengua and a chicken quesadilla( this is my daughter ordering these quesadillas guys, she flippin can't get enough of it). The tacos de lengua are the focus here! These were superb because of the cut of meat selected for my 3 tacos. Beef toungue is VERY high in fat. If you don't cook it right, or cut out some of the fat, it will gross you out forever. These chunks of beef were large in size and had a minimal amount of fat. They were served with corn tortillas, chopped white onion, a lime, and plenty of cilantro. I've been on this beef toungue, Mexican food kick the last few weeks (see my check-ins) and know that these are the best I've tried so far in MI. I'll end with this, the service was excellent. We walked in on a Friday at 10:00 pm, with only 30 min until closing. Our food was out quick and it was hot! We were not rushed and the server even asked us if we wanted desert or anything else before the kitchen closed. They were cleaning up and we opted to pack up and go, but only because we felt bad. Not rushed at all. We paid our checks and exchanged witty Spanish banter with the host. Will I return, yeah! El Azteca is worth the 30 min drive to Allendale. Why not the 5 star you ask? I went here the other night with a friend for dinner by his suggestion. I had been craving tacos so I figured, why not give it a try! It is close to where we both live and was open late so we made plans to go. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated and given water and menus. These were soon followed by chips and salsa. So far the experience was good, but then a few things threw me off. First, the menu was covered in dried food and sour cream. I could understand something like this occurring by accident in a busy restaurant but there were only 2 other tables of people there at that time. The waiting time was not bad for getting our food, as we had been wanting to catch up anyways and didn't mind sitting and talking, but had it been busier I would hope they would have more staff. Our food came and was fairly simple. It did taste good but was not amazing by any means. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable and we got to spend time together which was our goal. Once we finished eating, we sat for quite a while waiting for the bill. Then, upon getting it, it was unclear as to how we were to pay. We waited for our waiter to come back but he appeared to have gone home. After some time, my friend went up to the bar with our bill and requested to pay, as it was getting late and we were the only ones left seated. To be completely honest, I would likely not return here. The food was alright but a bit over priced for the quality. The restaurant could use a bit of cleaning, along with their materials, and the staff could use a bit of timeliness training. All in all, I would much rather go downtown and get authentic Mexican food for a much cheaper price that I know will be great. read more
