Very mixed reviews on this place. Decor was cute, but everything else..hit or miss... so let's break it down: FOOD Karala Parotta- Best thing I tried. Super fluffy that we kept ordering another. I ate it with the gravy from random curries but when it's hot and fresh, it's even good on it's own. Plain Roti- I've had plain roti before.. this was more like a tortilla. Not sure why it was priced at $2.49 when it takes 2.5 seconds to inhale this small portion. But hey, the waitress did warn us it was whole wheat flour. Apparently this is the "dieter's choice" item. Veechu Roti- I'm a fan. Super stretchy and thin and gets the job done. Poori- A little on the oily side but oh well, would totally order again. Came with a masala curry that I enjoyed. Mutton Biryani- Could take it or leave it. Was a standard biryani. Mutton and chicken curries- Definitely hit or miss. Sometimes too salty, sometimes just right. At least they offered to replace one of the curries when we mentioned it was too salty, which was nice. Wattalapam- Amazing dessert! Perfect texture and a great way to finish off a meal WAIT STAFF Hmmm...this was a fun game all night. The waitress was super funny, that's for sure. But when there's one waitress for the entire dining room, and she keeps forgetting what we ordered...it gets a little frustrating. Between asking for the same drinks multiple times, and have them come after the third attempt, to having her offer to pack up curry while we were still waiting on one more parotta, lets just say a 2nd person for the front of the house is much needed. OVERALL Food was decent, location was good, and might come back, just maybe not in the near future.

This is our 3rd but enjoyed the experience today the most thanks to Dinesh believe who's been only started to work here recently. We enjoyed his passion towards welcoming customers then recommending the menu items. Food was great specially spicy fries . Management must be doing a great job which shows the level of service we received today . Wish you all the best, please keep up great quality and service!! Thank you all

This place is a nice addition to the Scarborough South Asian food scene though it reminded me quite strongly of Southern Aroma (though I wouldn't say it lives up to the quality of that establishment). Really nice, well-decorated space, though it doesn't scream fine-dining. Also, the booths have irritatingly small tables/uncomfortable seats, so you're probably better off with one of their proper tables. Service is great -- our waitress was incredibly sweet and gave my father a complimentary cheesecake as we were there celebrating his birthday. The food was excellent! Food was well-timed, with our appetizers coming out relatively quickly. Some of our party found the hot 'n sour soup a little too peppery, but I quite liked the extra kick. The Sri Lankan jumbo shrimp was also tasty. Our mains were fantastic all-around: we loved the rich Vanni fish curry, and it paired nicely with the veechu roti. The onion dosa was excellent and was accompanied by a delicious trio of chutneys. Chicken hakka noodles were also quite yummy, and not overly oily, which is always nice. They have a nice selection of desserts, and though I wasn't a fan of their fruity cheesecakes on offer, I had to avail myself of their mango lassi -- a perfect end to a delicious meal.

After trying the buffet food I must say it's much better than the dishes you can order from. The buffet especially on Friday has a variety of vegetarian options. You can get as much rice and curries as you want and dosas as well. I love the sweets you get as well.

Went back again since I loved the Parrotas last time. They did not disappoint. The Sri Lankan Mutton Curry was also very flavourful and had a nice curry sauce which went well with the Parrota. Picture below is the Mutton Kotthu Roti which was delicious as well - not dry like some places! (Depends what you like).

Lunch buffet, highly recommend and fresh!

My coworker and I were searching for lunch after a very difficult morning of work. We searched the local Sri Lankan strip mall for a restaurant, yet there was no table service. An elderly man recommended 5 Spice, so we headed straight there. Upon entering, we were greeted by smiling faces and a bountiful and fresh buffet just before noon. Fresh dosas and naan were ordered separately and the buffet was a god send after a cold , difficult morning. I recommend the soups, lamb, and even the tapioca pudding. Highly recommend for anyone looking to discover the hospitality and flavor of south Asian cuisine.

I ordered Kothu, which is fried chopped roti . It's funny that the clerk asked me how much spicy do I want. I said what are the levels can I choose from? There are mild, medium, spicy, quite spicy and very spicy. I chose spicy this time because I don't want to have diarrhea for the first time eating sri-lankais food. The curry chicken kothu was very impressive. It smelled so good even my wife who doesn't like spicy food wanted to have a bite. The texture of kothu is special, pretty chewy, it's like both rice and noodle, or a mix of rice and noodle. The amount was also large. I only had half of it and I can continue enjoying it as tomorrow's lunch

I came here for lunch around noon and the place was pretty busy at the time. The menu here has a ton of different rice and fry dishes I wanted, but what really caught my eye was the special they had advertised, it was macaroni and cheese, french fries, and chicken masala.....and let me tell you, this meal punched me in the throat, strangled me, and killed any ounce of hunger I had. The taste and flavour was so overwhelming that I couldn't help but inhale this dish at the speed of light, it was just so dang good. Overall, Cucini Xpress is a certified banger. The portions here are large, the flavour is strong, and all three parts of the dish were delicious even on their own. Looking for a quick and reasonibly priced bite to eat near Dundas Square? This is the place to hit up.

Social media had done its work, flooding my feed with the golden bowls of appa from Colombo street stalls and rooftop eateries across the island. The question was whether this unassuming Scarborough plaza outpost could answer that call. It could, and it did. Hopper Hut occupies a modest space tucked into a nondescript strip mall on Ellesmere Road -- a setting that makes no architectural promises and need not. The dining room at the back is functional and warmly utilitarian, evoking the no-frills confidence of a kitchen that trusts its food entirely. The atmosphere is decidedly casual, bordering on spartan, yet there is something deeply familiar and unhurried about it -- a kind of timeless, neighbourhood authenticity that more polished establishments spend years trying to manufacture. The hoppers themselves are the undisputed centrepiece, and they deliver with conviction. Fermented rice-flour batter, lacework-crisp at the edges, yielding and softly chewy at the bowl's centre -- the texture is precisely what the form demands. One is advised, however, to receive them with immediacy: like all great bread, the hopper is a creature of the moment. The short journey home diminishes their crispness in a way that no reheating can fully redeem. Plan accordingly.

Their bar seats are just enough to fit the 4 of us. The staffs must have found us weird... LoL. 3.5 star for ambiance... Shop is kept pretty clean. We ordered kothu roti with lamb and one with chicken, butter chicken, and a Somoza. Ok I'm no expert in Sri Lankan food, but it tastes authentic as in similar to my friends home cook meals. But maybe I'm not used to it, I find it a bit saltier than my liking. Based on my limited experience with Sri Lankan food, I'll give it a 4 Star for food. Value is 4.5 star. One of the most popular foods from this culture is Kothu Roti (chopped roti that is stir fried with spices, onions, scrambled egg along with meat/ vegetable curry). It often is quite spicy and there aren't many options for it in the downtown core but one place I go to get my fix is Saffron Spice Kitchen. They are a Sri Lankan vendor that offers this speciality dish along with other signature dishes, many of which are vegetarian. What I like about the Kothu Roti from here is the focus is more on the flavour than on spice level. It also has a very good Spice, curry and roti ratio compared to other vendors. There is also an authentic taste remaining at the same time despite the moderate level of spice. I got to try the butter chicken Kothu Roti which was nice and mild. It is priced at $11.95 which is pretty standard and the portion size is generous. I love the rise in fusion food trends lately and this fusion with Butter Chicken definitely works with the Kothu Roti. They offer takeout mainly with minimal seating available. It remains important to continue to support take out vendors just as it is to support those with dine in and patio options. Being one of the few Sri Lankan restaurants in the area, make sure to check it out if you are ever on Queen Street or you can also visit them in Mississauga at their newly opened second location.
