For a restaurant w/in a hotel the menu was average. The hours are geared more for evening diners as it doesn't open until 5pm each night & is only open until 10 pm. If you are staying at the hotel it was disappointing you could not order room service from your room & had to actually go down to the bar to place an order. read more

We cannot say enough about our experience with the 5120 staff and venue. This may be more of a review for the Onyx bar and the garden room. We had our daughter's wedding here and long story short, after our initial venue cancelled on us 2 weeks before the wedding, we scrambled and found the 5120 venue. In 2 weeks, they helped us get a caterer, tasting, and worked with us every step of the way. We cannot say enough about all of the staff at the 5120 venue. First the good, The place is very well kept and very clean. The Wait staff are nice and very professional. The food was nothing special. I think you could get a better breakfast burrito with less grease at any fast food drive through. The fruit was fresh and had nice flavor. 15 bucks was a waste of money for what you get. As for the kitchen staff I appreciate that they have the radio playing loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear although I am not sure all patrons appreciated the Mexican music that sounded like it was from an old western sound track. What an unexpected find in a southwest Bloomington 2 1/2 star hotel - Country Inn & Suites. I went here the other day w/ my friend Katie that beat me to reviewing this restaurant, and as she stated we do have a knack for getting those 1,000 point OpenTable restaurants that tend to be nestled in hotels. When we got there at 530pm, we had our pick of any table at the place. The space is separated into 3 areas: the Onyx Bar is right when you walk in, there's a small restaurant space to the left, and then the largest space is the bright atrium ahead. On a cold winter evening, we chose for the warmer small restaurant space right next to a fireplace that our server set ablaze (remotely) and we basked in warmth the whole meal. If you're deciding what to do get from the menu (and trust me, I picked a better one than Katie), flip the menu over and check out the Prix-Fixe menu. A starter and an entree for $20 looked good for me. I had the Baby Green Salad and then the Chicken Mozzarella. Very pleased to see the portion size of the Chicken was manageable - it's the turn of the new year and you know I have to watch my consumption ;) Mashed Yukon gold potatoes, grilled asparagus, and the basil oil was a delicious combination and the presentation was truly top notch. Dessert is not included in the prix-fixe menu, but Katie wanted to end on a good note, so we chose the bread pudding with vanilla bean ice cream. A good standby, and it didn't let us down. read more

First time leaving a restaurant that I have gone home to have peanut butter toast. We had a Groupon for 60% off dinner for 2, a $72 value. There were about 9 tables in our area, only 3 of them were being used, all by people using Groupon. Per the waiter/bartender (probably cook too, who knows), we got a 4 ounce steak and a small (also probably 4 ounce) chicken breast. Steak was cooked properly, chicken breast was charred and dry (see my attached picture of the chicken and not the size vs. the fork). The restaurant didn't even provide the meals listed in the Groupon, and no way was that a $72 meal, it really wasn't even worth the $29 paid for the Groupon. This was a special "Groupon only" menu that was half size entree. To get the salad, tiny entrees and small shared desert, it was an hour and 20 minutes. If that was a $72 meal for the two of us, I would guess everything is extremely over priced. If this is the restaurant discounting their food to to get new and repeat customers, this had the opposite effect on my. No way will I return to the slow service, poor food and high prices. My friend and I have a knack for going to hotel restaurants, and tonight was no exception. We found ourselves nestled in, quite cozily actually, at the 5120 Restaurant & Bar. The place was dead, as it's very hidden inside of the Country Inn in Bloomington, so we had our choice of seating. The fireplace was calling our name. Our server, who was a jack of all trades, and had I not been directly facing the kitchen, could have sworn she cooked our food as well! The service was impeccable. She was very nice and accommodating, as we requested the fireplace be turned on, as opposed to just a conversation piece. The food on the other hand..... Let's just say the chicken flatbread appeared as though it had been run over by a semi, and there was absolutely no crunch to it. I NEED a crunchy crust. The mushroom soup that I had first, was actually very good, but I wanted it to be thicker, so I requested crackers. They. Don't. Have. Crackers. WHAT?!? I'm glad I ordered dessert (bread pudding) because this place was going downhill fast. The only other qualm I had tonight, was that upon returning to my car, I noticed that someone had kicked the great big ice/snow chunks from behind my tires.....that's my FAVORITE thing to do in the winter....jerks. read more

Wow! For a Country Inn's restaurant, 5120 Restaurant has it going on! Located almost invisible inside of the Country Inn & Suites this restaurant definitely was better than expected. I must commend our server who was playing hostess, bartender and server on this blizzard-y December evening (as her colleagues were stuck in the snow). The food was well presented, came at appropriate times. I would definitely suggest the chicken skewers for your first course. The chicken and sauce are both scrumptious... but the bed of greens and onions they are served on are to.die.for. Period. Their filet was definitely the winning entree. Perfectly cooked and served with amazing sides. With the glass walls and ceiling, the restaurant gives off a green room feel. The location given that I was staying in the hotel was good as well. However, I merely wanted food to take back to my room. My mom and I ordered for room service from this restaurant as we were staying in the hotel. Our first surprise was when they informed us it would be a $5 "delivery" fee to run it upstairs to our room. We could order pizza delivery miles away for half that price! We attempted to order a turkey burger, and they were out. We ordered a regular burger, medium. We also ordered the beef nachos appetizer. About 30 mins later we ran downstairs to pick up the food right after their phone call. As we opened the cartons back in the room, we noticed that the $9 nachos was a tiny serving, and lacked more than a tablespoon of ground beef. The chips were also completely soggy; you would pick them up and they would bend right over and fall apart. Absolutely gross. The burger on the other hand was pretty decent. It was cooked well and the pretzel bread was really good. But not a save to the lack of customer service and crappy nachos. read more

I can't speak about the normal bar and restaurant service, the bartenders seemed quite decent, and it is an attractive space. However, with the indifferent service my family was given for my groom's dinner, I cannot recommend booking such special events there. The problems started when my mother, who was trying to make the arrangements, was not getting the emailed replies to her online request for information, because they were winding up in her overzealous email spam folder. Despite my emailing the coordinator that my mom, a grandmother pushing 70 who is less than confident in her computer skills, would prefer communication via telephone, the coordinator did not reply via phone to phone messages left, instead emailing me. It was only by sheer luck that my mom happened to check her spam folder and found the email replies sent several weeks earlier. For our scheduled in-person meetings to make the arrangements, despite having scheduled the appointments, we always had to wait at least 15 minutes. In the first such meeting, despite my mom walking with a cane and showing obvious intense pain from two knees due for replacement, she was not offered a seat until one of us asked if we might sit at one of the tables. At the meeting, we were promised a TV and DVD player to use for displaying a slideshow during the dinner. When I came to test the setup the night before, the DVD player rolled out was about the size of the old Betamax video recorders that would be rolled out in my elementary school classes once or twice a year back in the '70's - and there were no power cords or cables to connect to the TV that worked. I wound up having to use my notebook computer, and had to try to figure out the connections on my own - eventually getting the video to work, but having to rely on the notebook's tinny speakers for the audio. On the night of the actual dinner, when large groups of family members requiring two tables desired to sit near each other, rather than have staff offer to move the tables, it was put upon us to move them ourselves. The staff was right there to start cleaning up the place before my bride-to-be, parents, and I left, though. This despite it being well before 9:00 PM. On a Friday night. When we were going to leave fairly soon, anyway, given that we had a morning wedding to wake up early for. Other issues? There was no salad, even though I recall us specifying the salad desired during the initial meeting. There were no dinner rolls, which were not even offered as options. I hate to be negative, and I am usually one of the last to complain about service, but I felt like our business was barely tolerated, rather than desired. read more

My work partner and I visited about a dozen venues in the Twin Cities and outer suburbs in search for someplace to fit 85 people for our annual office Holiday Party. Every week we thought we found the perfect venue, whether it was in a hotel or elsewhere, until we discussed menu and our small budget. One venue literally scoffed at us when they heard what price range we had to stay within. It was rude and very discouraging. We had found a downtown venue that we decided to settle with, though we would have had to skimp on the food a bit in order to stay within budget. My partner managed to come across the 5120 Restaurant & Onyx Bar website at the last minute- I'm not exactly sure how.. The photos looked nice and it was right down the street from our office. We set up a meeting with Jennifer, their events coordinator, to take a tour of the space available. We loved that there were four rooms, all with a subtly different theme: the living room-esque restaurant area, the bar with a cigar lounge feel, a small café breakfast lounge and the GORGEOUS atrium. It was beautiful in the daylight, but looked like it was straight out of the Beauty & the Beast ballroom at night when lit up. The atrium looked and felt small when we initially saw it, but it comfortably held 85 people who sat, stood and roamed to mingle. The menu had variety and was affordable. Jennifer was more than willing to work with us on whatever menu items we wanted featured - even if it wasn't on their set menu. I was worried when I saw less-than-stellar reviews of the food online and we were not able to sample their menu items beforehand. There was no reason to be worried. My boyfriend who attended with me might be one of the pickiest eaters I've ever met, alongside my work partner's husband. Both of them were very happy with the food. There was something to please everyone from the simplest eaters (i.e. - pizza flatbread, chips and dip, etc) to those with a more sophisticated pallet (HUGE, juicy bacon-wrapped scallops, skewers, artisan cheese platters, etc). The food was plated well and looked appetizing. Jennifer also made sure my favorite dessert, chocolate mousse with whipped cream and strawberries, were available- something that wasn't on the menu and wasn't an issue to provide. The bartender was a hit. He was stoic, but very professional and polite. It was obvious that his first priority was to get your drink from the bar to your mouth without wasting much (or booze!). The drinks were stiff but tasty, which is always appreciated when you're paying for over 200 guest drinks that aren't watered down. Our guests got more than what we paid for, in a positive manner. Also not on the menu was a specific local beer we wanted to have available at our party (Tonka IPA). With only a few days' notice, Jennifer made sure the beer was stocked for our party. The wait staff was much like the bartender- business first but polite. They kept a good eye on tables, making sure to quickly and quietly clear plates where needed, without interrupting conversation and generally going unnoticed. Jennifer herself was busy clearing plates as well. The food was consistently stocked. Some of our guests were skeptical when they heard the event was "in the back of the Country Inn & Suites down the street from the office." I didn't blame them. But we knew when they walked in that they would be wowed, and we were right! We host 10-12 company-wide events per year, and this was the only one where over 3/4 of our guests stayed all the way through the end of the event simply because they loved the venue. Jennifer did a fantastic job of keeping us within our event budget, without sacrificing quality of food, drink or service. My hunger made itself present as I sat down at the table. Dining for three: myself, my date, and my monstrous appetite that's been growling at me all afternoon. I raised my hand to let the waitress know that we wanted to order. "Who does that?" I thought to myself. My appetite was taking the wheel. The waitress came over with speed and greeted us with a warm smile and bubbly personality. My eyes wandered the menu for a couple of seconds until a whisper came from the deepest caverns of my stomach saying "Chicken Alfredo Pasta" in the form of a provocative stomach rumble. I ordered that with a side of fries. I was feeling reckless. "She'll have the salad" I said with a wink, fully aware that we didn't know each other well enough for her to object and order something of scale that would put a hole in my wallet. Also, girls like salad. My voice fluctuated throughout shallow conversation as we waited for our food, getting louder at times to mask the sounds of my growling intestines. People began to stare. I knew it was all worth it the moment I saw the waitress approaching with full hands. I shed a tear. I now know why husbands cry when they see their wives walk down the isle. To stare right in the face of pure beauty makes a man emotional. My massive meal compared to my dates was scary, so I strategically slid the fries over to her side. She boldly took one. I kept my frustration inside for I had much bigger, more satisfactory things to attend to. The Chicken Alfredo Pasta from the 5120 Onyx Restaurant. In a state full of many average eateries, I feel as if I found a diamond in the rough. A Ferrari in a Toyota dealership. My first bite was one of pure flavorsome relief. A delectable creamy sauce with the perfect chicken to noodle proportion; served with a crispy piece of toast used to transport my scrumptious bites into battle. Not a word was spoken as the Chicken Alfredo quickly slayed the monster in my belly. My date tried to make conversation but before I responded some wisdom came to my head: "Not every battle is worth fighting. You don't have time to get involved with things that aren't between you and your destiny." Being the wise man that I am, I disregarded the battle of conversation and continued to epically slay my appetite with the weapons that 5120's Restaurant put right into my grasp. The 5120 Onyx Restaurant & Bar is a hidden gem inside of the Country Inn & Suites Hotel in Bloomington. We booked this venue for our wedding reception in September, and it couldn't have been a more perfect location. The event coordinator, Jennifer, is easy enough to work with. She is full of information, however on her busier days she can be tough to get in touch with. Not a huge deal, but being a bride I generally expected it to be all about me all the time. From the first time we looked at the venue to the very end of our reception the staff was very accommodating to our every request, and so reasonably priced as well! Of all the venues we toured for our small (70 Guest) wedding this one offered the most for the lowest food & beverage minimum around. The bartender, Shawn, is always there. I mean - ALWAYS. We were at the location probably 4-5 times over the course of our wedding and planning and he was always there. Poor guy must never get a day off, but he takes it in stride and is all smiles and very helpful. The food at the reception (and the tasting ahead of time) was delightful and the service was spot on. I don't know why this location doesn't have more reviews because I think it's one of the best in the Twin Cities for a small reception. read more

Stayed at the hotel it's attached to for work, as usual. Arrived later in the day so I took the easy way out and ordered room service. The pizza came on a cardboard round in a bag and seemed microwaved. The garlic bread ad no garlic taste and the marinara sauce was ice cold. The burger was tasteless an boring. I hate to say it, but the chain places less than a mile away would have been better, and I hate going to chains for dinner. Also seemed pricey, normal for room service, but the quality and service do not match the prices. Oh and there is a $5 delivery fee not on the menu, they tell you about it when you call. 5 bux!! you gotta be kidding me, Embassy Suites only charge $3 and the food is much better when I stay there. read more

A gem of a hotel restaurant. Missed our connection in Minneapolis and got put up in the Holiday Inn Bloomington West. We weren't dressed for Minneapolis as we were on our way to Cozumel, so the thought of going out to eat somewhere outside of the restaurant was not very pleasant. Luckily the 5120 restaurant has amazing food. Jen (or Jan?) Who I believe is the manager who is running the bar and serving everyone at the restaurant. She was amazing. Friends had been here previously, and they were raving about how great the food and service were. So, we decided to go there together. We could not have been more impressed. The food was not only fresh, tasty, and plentiful, the presentation was impressive. We had the bleu cheese fondue and bruschetta to start, and loved them both. The entrees we selected were the beef stroganoff, wild rice soup, and pecan-crusted walleye. All were delicious! We topped it off with a slice of chocolate cake, which also was presented very well. Janice, our waitress, was friendly and efficient, and helped to make the experience delightful. Chef Nate came out to introduce himself, and see how we were enjoying our meal. Terrible Event Planner! We booked our rehearsal dinner at the 5120 months before our event. My fiance and his father went in and paid the deposit and that was that. 2 weeks before our event I started to think that they might want to get our headcount and our menu option (gold, silver, or bronze plated dinners). When we called, there was no answer, and no voicemail. Therefore, my fiance Emailed our headcount and menu choice to the Event Planner, Jen. A few days went by with no response, we kept calling, and no voicemail. I was afraid the venue had closed altogether! We are a week before the event now! Finally, when we called the line was being answered. However, we had to call SEVERAL times in the same night just get a hold of Jen when she was in the building. When my fiance finally spoke with her she said that they also needed to find out what entree each of our guests wants to order off the menu and they wanted a seating chart. She would be sending a floor plan to him. The floor plan was a bunch of 8 top rounds. The whole time i'm thinking, why did we have to chase Jen down when she needed all of this information!? Why didn't she at least respond to his Email?! I'm also trying to plan my actual wedding here! I also found it odd that we had to make a seating chart, that the floor plan was for 8 tops, and that we had to get our guests orders; so I called Jen. Jen could not have been any ruder! I have NEVER been treated like that by someone in the hospitality industry before. I told her my concerns, turns out we didn't NEED to get the menu choices, and there are other floor plans available. Would have been nice if she told us that! When I asked why we had to chase her down to give her this required info, she said that we Emailed her and that's all they needed (except for the other info she asked us for when we finally spoke with her...) Also, she didn't know her phone was down and that's not her fault. Also, they are super busy right now, she has been doing this for 6 years and she thinks she is very good at her job. She is sorry if we feel like she forgot about us....which I thinks he literally did! She called me "sweetie" in her snotty tone, and proceeded to say that brides think they know about even planning just because they plan one wedding. I'm actually in event planning. She then went on to question my credibility as an Event Planner and grilled me on how I would have done her job differently. I understand that mistakes happen, and she most likely forgot about us. But she should have owned up to this; been kind, pleasant, and understanding for causing the extra stress to us the week of our wedding by being unavailable and unresponsive. And having us chase down what people want to order, and make a seating chart when it wasn't even necessary. Instead, she was rude and defensive and we were not offered any restitutions. Oh and she didn't want me to write this review until after our event hoping they could still make the night special for us. She didn't even introduce herself to me or acknowledge me. The food was good, it's a beautiful space. But Jen is awful. Maybe she gives more attention to weddings they host, I guess that's where the real money is. read more
