I've been training at 5th Ave for over 4 years and I love it. This place is different from a lot of other places I've been, so it's worth understanding that before you go. This is a boutique gym with a focus on personal training. I'm not a fitness buff -- I go to 5th Ave 1x / week to ensure I have at least one solid workout focused on strength training. The rest of the week I run, yoga, do workout classes or do strength training on my own with varying degrees of intensity/dedication. Let me say, I am not a gym person - I've joined several over the years and have never been able to stick with it. But I needed to get in shape (for my wedding - cliche, yes, but a great motivator) and thought I would give FC a try. I live close by so convenience was a big selling point (I'm a little lazy - also a road block to the whole gym thing). As it turns out, I really like working out. Still not sure I'd feel comfortable surrounded by super fit gym rats at, say, Crunch, but I'm much more confident in my abilities now, not to mention physically trimmer and stronger. FC has a great system, with wonderful trainers who are friendly and supportive and not at all intimidating. I only with I could train with them indefinitely! I've been training at 5th Ave Fitness for 9 months and I couldn't be happier. I've always been active but had no idea where to start with strength training and didn't feel like I'd fit in at a "normal" gym. The environment at 5th Ave Fitness feels completely different. The space is small but never crowded, and has a relaxed, community feel. The trainers really care, and will design a program that is very specific to you, focusing on the right form and consistency over time. I'm always challenged without a session ever feeling like a fitness bootcamp, and have seen real progress with only weekly sessions. I've been coming to 5th ave fitness for over a year now, so this review is long overdue! I was first introduced by my wife who bought me their introductory package. I had been working out on my own for several years, but could never get the results I wanted (and often got injured in the process). That all changed after coming here. Coming only once a week, I've seen amazing results - gaining muscle and losing body fat. Its a testament to their amazing trainers and the supportive community they create. Not only do you get results, but you feel like you're part of a family. I've since had to move back to CA, so will miss my weekly sessions, however. I can not recommend this gym enough!! The trainers are not only highly qualified but supportive, perceptive and communicative. There's a great sense of community in the gym, the class sizes are small so you get plenty of guidance on your form and if you're rehabilitating they really know their stuff. This place is great. I went here because I was lifting and running on my own and I was starting to have all types of back pain and stiffness. The trainers were very receptive and they immediately got me into a routine that helped me with flexibility and calisthenics. I felt great after a week and I've been working out with them ever since. Before 5th Avenue Fitness, I was 5'10, 150 lbs and 20% body fat. Barely a year with Andy and his amazing crew at 5th Av and I'm 165 lbs and 11% body fat. I've gained muscle and shed the fat - and I'm becoming fitter and stronger under their tutelage. But the numbers only tell half of the story - the people who work at 5th Av are also incredibly friendly, empathetic and personable, and they care deeply about your health and well-being and your fitness goals. Andy, the owner, is not only an amazing trainer but one of the most amazing human beings I've met in my life - as a previous reviewer mentioned, going for a personal training session is like going to a shrink, just that you also get fitter, faster and stronger. 5th Avenue Fitness may be expensive in absolute terms, but it is cheaper than personal training at almost any other gym in NY and, more importantly, great value for your money. 5th Av is a tremendously satisfying experience - if you work with the trainers and listen to what they say, you will definitely see improvements in your fitness and meet your fitness goals. 5th Av has also been a source of refuge and strength. I've been coming to 5th Ave Fitness for around 6 months. It's different from other gyms/ studios I've seen in a really great way - the environment is extremely inviting/ non-intimidating, every single trainer I've worked with is kind, attentive, super knowledgable and cares a lot about your goals, and because they limit the number of clients+trainers in the gym at one time, it's never crowded and has a laid back vibe. I've gotten stronger (especially noticeable when I'm lifting more weight or doing better at the same move), learned a lot about strength workouts, and my body fat % has decreased too. As someone who hasn't always liked working out, I always look forward to sessions here, and because the trainers here are so versatile (and there's a ton of different equipment), workouts never get boring. If you're not a gym person or aren't sure whether you'll like personal training, you should still give 5th Ave Fitness a try, because I'm super confident you'll find workouts here tailored to your interests and goals! I"ve been coming to the fitness collective since it has opened and it has been great. The trainers have a good sense of when to push, how to push and only push to a level customized for you. I like the fact that you have multiple trainers so don't get stuck in a rut with one. While many great trainers have come and gone, new ones come along who help you refresh your workout. I have been going to 5th Ave Fitness for the past year and I wholeheartedly recommend this place to everyone I know. Someone else wrote a review along the lines of "5th Ave Fitness changed my life." Not to steal their line, but this place truly has permeated my entire being - physical, mental and emotional. I like to say, it's cheaper than therapy -- and in a lot of ways, more effective. Besides, nobody's ever gotten in shape talking to their shrink. As a kid, I was a pre-elite competitive gymnast and when I "retired" (at age 14) I think I never really filled that huge void (I was training about 4-5 hrs a day, 5 days a week). Through out my teens and twenties, even into my early thirties, I maintained a relatively healthy-looking physique and could kind of get by without a ton of exercise and restricted diet for a long time. 18 years later, I stumbled across a sandwich board outside 5th Ave offering an introductory package. I'd been thinking I was pressing my luck just relying on relatively good metabolism, especially moving into my mid-thirties and so I figured, why not try it out. Now, whenever I take a class anywhere else - yoga or any other type of exercise, it honestly feels like a walk in the park. I am so much stronger physically, mentally and emotionally - I've weaned myself off certain medications that were really not necessary and were actually detrimental my well being. Now I actually get irritated if I go too long without exercise. God, that's a great problem to have. On the surface 5th ave is expensive - but if you take apart other superfluous pieces of your life you spend money on, it's actually not in comparison and entirely worth it. Also, the classes really are not any more expensive than any other exercise class in Brooklyn and if anything the personal training sessions are actually cheaper than at the big gyms and far and away superior. I also like that it's not a big corporate "money" gym and you don't have to spend a grand a year just to buy in for a membership you never end up using. Because 5th Ave is all class and personal session based - personal fitness and nutrition is their ultimate goal -- not getting as much money as possible from you in hopes that you'll use their facilities as little as possible the way big gyms like Crunch and Equinox do. Finally, the staff is amazing - including the owner Andy who really listens to client's concerns and needs. They work on a rotating trainer system which I like because every trainer has their own style and it keeps things interesting while also really working every aspect of your body. You owe it to yourself, at the very least in the name of preventative health-care, to give this place a shot. And then go back after the introductory package and really give it a go. It's highly doubtful you'll be disappointed, as every single review here illustrates. read more

I cycled and danced and did yoga. I found gyms boring until I found 5th avenue fitness. The ambience and people are down to earth. Each trainer brings something new and fresh. It's an uplifting place. No need for fancy spandex. Just come to work out and get healthy. I am inspired each time I go, and with each trainer. Travis brings great energy and a sense of joy to the gym. All ages are represented. I just applied for Medicare and I've never felt better and been more fit! Go! I do not say this lightly: Fifth Avenue Fitness Collective has changed my life. About two years ago, I wandered in to hear their shtick, convinced that I would take whatever intro deal they had to offer and then be on my merry way. For better (for my body and spirit) and worse (yeah, it's not cheap, but no regrets!), that was not to be the case. Andy and his staff have an approach to training that is unlike anything I've ever experienced in my many years of being a quasi-athlete who never felt quite strong/thin/fast enough to really go the distance. You'll work out with a range of trainers who have very different styles, but they are all complimentary to each other, and you never have to explain yourself - they take notes on you, and they usually do their homework. Workouts range from fine-tuning sculpting of muscles you never know how to get at on your own to ass-kicking cardio challenges that make any of the day's challenges seem like a piece of cake to creative plyometric stuff and everything in between. The hour flies by, and, I kid you not - you will see and feel results. I feel so much better - less injury-prone, less exercise-avoidant, less in-a-rut-and-don't-know-how-to-get-out, less fearful, and generally more awesome. read more

I've been going to the Fifth Avenue Fitness Collective since about three months after it opened. In 18 months, I have lost (and kept off!) a consistent 15 to 20 pounds, and am down two clothing sizes. The system of training really works, and the atmosphere has kept me going there. I've never stuck with a workout program as consistently or for as long before. In addition to personal training, I go to the classes and the other clients are down to earth, intelligent people. I moved to Brooklyn 20 years ago but I always worked out in Manhattan. I am so glad Fifth Ave Fitness opened, because I finally found a place with amazing personal trainers, no frills, no nonsense at half the price of the city. I have trained with everyone at the studio and I can't say I have a 'personal favorite'. They each have something different to offer, so it keeps the workout interesting, which is fantastic. I have trained there for 12 months with great results. They work hard to keep you motivated and the best compliment I can give them is that for the first time in my life I look forward to excercising. I've been going here for the last 2 months and it's been great. Andy and Travis run a great place and the trainers there are all wonderful to work with. As an overweight former athlete it's been a great and supportive place to try and fight my way back into shape. They are good at pushing me just enough to get a big benefit while not killing me (too much!). My in-shape wife also has started going and is enjoying the variety of exercises and trainers as well. I've been coming here for over two years now. Before I came to 5th Ave Fitness, I tried to do CrossFit and it didn't go well. At the time, I was so out-of-shape that the other CrossFitters would get annoyed when they had to be partnered with me--pretty much a physically-unfit person's worst nightmare. I found 5th Ave Fitness on Yelp, and almost immediately I got addicted and started going almost every day. All the trainers there are amazing and the personal training sessions are perfectly tailored to what you need most. The group classes are generally very small and the other clients are friendly and chill. The owners, Andy and Travis, are incredibly nice and really good at taking care of their clients. Thanks to them and their diverse stable of trainer talent, I'm now in better shape than I've ever been in my life, and have definition in my abs for the first time! I feel like they've definitely reversed the aging process for me--being fit makes me feel much younger than I did. Plus, the discipline of getting in shape has changed my life in a lot of other positive ways as well--bad habits started to fall away organically, and it's had a positive impact on my work. I checked out 5th Ave Fitness and did an intro pack to see what it was like. I'm a 30 year old female who's done some personal training here or there, run several halfs and wanted general fitness as my goal. This place was so much better than the large gyms - you sign up for your sessions and most often get 1 of the handful of very qualified trainers. Each tracks your workout and abilities so any one you get can easily pick up where the other left off and they each have some unique specialties so the constant variation is really great for your body. The other thing I liked was the fact that they take form very seriously. Flexibility and proper form/movement are a huge part of their practice. They aren't trying to constantly sell - the focus is all on your performance. I feel so much stronger and after just running the NYC marathon my recovery time was almost nothing compared to a past marathon I ran. Plus they are very flexible with time and will work with you to make sure you get what you need. Great place, great trainers, and great results!! Glad I found them in the neighborhood. read more

i trained 2x-week with tier 3 and tier 4 trainers at equinox for many years (and recently again with a tier 4 trainer while living out in california) before switching to 5th ave fitness. i'm a huge equinox fan, but only when i can't train here! andy and his team have a leg up on all the fancy, 'top-notch' gyms in the city in so many ways. they know exactly how to keep your body guessing. their training program is so uniquely adaptive- they're so tuned in to how you're doing and switch things up throughout the hour rather than sticking to a predetermined program of machines, and their setup allows you to train with different trainers- such a great way to get in a totally different style of workout to keep things interesting and challenging. their space has such a friendly, neighborhood vibe- something that all the chilled, eucalyptus-scented towels in the world can't make up for. they really know what they're doing. the tough, rewarding hours pass by very quickly. even my husband (a reluctant exerciser/once-a-week pickup soccer game player) has come to look forward to his weekly sessions. north slope is lucky to have them. read more
