So I stumbled upon this gym using my classpass trial. I loved the energy of the gym far as the music and the trainer. He definitely pushed us all the while making sure we have good form and being careful of our injuries. It is like personal training but with a small group which I like. I felt my abs days later. Like everyone else, I lost access to my gym in the COVID-19 shutdown. And while I miss the in-person connection with my teachers, small gyms like Krank have really rose to a level few can with their online classes. I was directed to a free booty class they were holding the past two Saturdays, and I got more out of that 30-minute workout than I've gotten in 75-minute workouts elsewhere. It's worth pointing out that Danny, the owner, was able to make me -- and I assume the other 60+ people in the Zoom -- laugh all while kicking my ass. Long story short, Krank is easily the best gym that I've been to in NYC. Have only been going for a couple months and have already noticed a huge difference in my strength, cardio, athleticism, and mobility. If you're in the area, I highly recommend at least doing the free 2 week trial. Long story long, I used to belong to a normal gym in NYC where I would alternate between going regularly and not going at all. When I was going, my workouts were pretty good as I feel I have decent understanding of athletic training (ex-college athlete and have previously worked out with other personal trainers). I would plan my workouts, always doing interval training in an effort to make the best use of my time at the gym. There's a few problems with interval training at regular gyms. Others would often be using the equipment that I needed, leading to significantly longer workouts than necessary (which often discouraged me from going in general). I also felt like I was causing a scene when performing more athletic jumping exercises. Lastly, it was difficult pushing myself in terms of the pace of my workout and the lifting heavier amounts when training on my own. After 2 months of not exercising at all, I began researching new gyms to join. I originally wanted to just join a better gym as I never liked the idea of group training. After reading the glowing reviews, I decided to do Krank's free two week trial. I had an introductory meeting with Dan where I explained my fitness goals (stronger, better mobility, more athletic, better cardio shape, and less time spent when at the gym). After one week, I was hooked, regularly attending both the Krank and semi-private sessions (45-60 minutes). Both sessions begin with a dynamic warm-up to get you ready for the main exercises. Krank sessions consist of high intensity interval training and typically involve bodyweight, sled, and lower weight kettlebell exercises. These sessions are amazing from both a cardio and strength perspective. While you go at your own pace, the group dynamic makes you more likely to push yourself. The semi-private sessions are more focused on the main compound lifts -- bench press, squat, & deadlift. Similar to offseason athletic training, the program is carefully planned and split into different phases to maximize strength gains. Exercises in the earlier weeks will be lower weight with higher reps, whereas later weeks will be higher weight with lower reps. While less challenging from a cardio perspective than Krank, these sessions are where your strength gains are most visible as you'll begin to lift heavier amounts. Once again, the group dynamic is beneficial as a spotter allows you to lift more weight than you may be comfortable doing alone. I would highly recommend either Krank or Semi-Private sessions as they lead to both better conditioning and strength gains. They are both full body workouts with attention given to each muscle group. I would personally recommend a combination of the two sessions as they serve as great complements to one another. Last and most importantly, Dan, Miguel, and the other trainers are amazing. They're highly knowledgeable and you can tell that a great amount of time and care went into designing the workouts. They also provide attention and motivation to everyone in each session. If your form is wrong, they're going to let you know and help fix it (which prevents injury). If you're slacking, they're going to push you to do better. I enjoy the style of coaching, "get to work" mentality. Before Krank, I exercised sporadically. Sometimes I would run or take a yoga class or work out to Youtube videos. But I did none of these things consistently. I needed to commit myself to care of my body and subsequently my mind. For me, exercise makes me a happier person. I sleep better and I'm less anxious if I work out routinely. I needed to join a gym to hold myself accountable. When I started Krank, I couldn't complete a work out. I stopped my assessment after thirty minutes because I felt like I was going to vomit and faint all at the same time. Now, I can complete an hour to an hour-and-half work out with no problem. The elevation of my stamina alone is staggering. I have energy that lasts. Also, I have muscles. Krank introduced me to weight lifting. I'd never held a bar bell in my life, but the coaches saw that I could excel and enjoy it. I've gained about fifteen pounds since starting the strength training. As someone who keeps a pretty busy schedule, I like the programs at Krank because I'm not working out alone. There is always a coach there to tell me what to do, to look out for my form and therefore safety, and to push me to do more. Plus, it's fun. Krank is genuine community. I have spent the past 5 years trying to find the perfect yet small and intimate "gym" that actually gave me kick a** workout. Never one to fit in at the Crunch type environments (why is that girl wearing diamond earrings and liquid eyeliner on the elliptical - does she even actually sweat!!??) I have tried small local gyms where I have been often disappointed by the rotating wheel of trainers. I have tried personal training "only" gyms - they can get ridiculously expensive. I have tried "bootcamp" style classes but thanks to the new Groupon mentality, the classes are completely filled up for MONTHS in advance! Cardio style Kickboxing gyms are a great workout - but after a while - the repetition of it gets dull. So then I found Krank and honestly its been life changing. Krank is no frills - but what do we need frills for - last I checked I came here to sweat, not get my nails done. Quite frankly, the "no frills" aspect of it all only adds to my desire to bring it as hard as I possibly can! I don't recall Rocky getting pumped up at the juice bar. What krank lacks in decor it makes up for in pure adrenaline and top notch training programs (Dan Salazer - is an amazing trainer - he knows how to make you work hard for it!) The workouts are a constant rotation - kettlebells, weights, tires, running outside.. there is never a dull moment. But here is what I love most about Krank - its a family. A family of all different shapes and sizes. A family that pushes each other to be their best. You really form amazing relationships with people who have the same goals as you. You give each other motivation when and wherever its needed. I don't care if this sounds corny - but its a special relationship and I feel better off for having it in my life. Stop reading reviews and join! I tore my Achilles tendon in May 2013 and defiantly limped into Krank 3 months later (way before I should have been active) determined to get back in shape. At first I thought coaches Dan, Miguel and Serena's touting Krank as "the best gym in Brooklyn" was bravado. Boy, was I wrong! Not only did they meet my high expectations but they exceeded them. While I haven't met my goals yet, I can say that in just 3 short months I have lost almost 30 lbs and have never been stronger in my life (and thought I was strong dude before). In short, here's why I love Krank and why you should join as well: 1. Comradery: "A rising tide lifts all boats." From the coaches to the Kranksters, I have never worked out with a cooler and more motivated group of people. There is a spirit of friendly competition and we push each other to be better. I am a Muay Thai fighter that was missing that extra something. Strength and condition with Dan took me to a whole new level. After months of working at krank I captured 4 titles. 3 time north American champion also United States champion. Dont count out other awesome coaches Sernia and Miguel know there stuff! Not only are they all great coaches they can make you laugh ,sweat and nearly cry after a workout. KrankBK is a family we push each others to goals we thought could not be reached. Krank is a wicked fun "NON-GYM." There are no complicated machines, and therefore no steroid freaks sitting on the machine you need. Krank has an awesome trainer, Dan Salazar, who doesn't wast your time. You show up a few min early, "roll out" and stretch, and Dan gets you working your a$$ off. Using dumbbells, kettle bells, barbells, suspension straps, and elastic bands, you are guided through a vigorous workout that will defiantly leave you winded. That is of course you put in the effort. Dan has many different "workouts" so your never going to get bored, and he can custom tailor the workout with your specific needs in mind. Any hour long session may have MMA fighters, corporate types, moms, students, and people in every kinda physical shape, working alongside 50+ year old ladies, and ALL WILL GET THE EXERCISE THEY NEED! DAN IS THAT AWESOME! And the support and encouragement from fellow "Kranksters" is the coolest thing. When you think you can't do another push-up, the Kranksters chime in and help you push out one more! No one looks down on you, no one laughs, and no one makes you do anything you don't want to do. I wish I knew about this sooner. When I came to Krank I was lethargic and overweight. Within 3 months of training with the incredibly awesome trainers at Krank I saw results I thought I wasn't capable of achieving. I am just so grateful to have found them. From the moment you walk in you feel as if you've walked in and left all your issues at the door and ready to give your all to your workout . On vacation, I stopped in for a class at KRANK. Entering the studio was kind of strange, it's in an industrial storage facility on the top floor. I felt like I was walking though a maze, but they included very clear descriptions of how to access the building and had signs on the wall leading you to the studio. Towels provided, low frills studio, has all the equipment you need though. I'm not picky about the space, can workout in a dungeon if there's proper ventilation. I care primarily about getting a high quality workout and KRANK delivered! The staff were very friendly and welcoming as were the patrons and coaches. Everyone was positive, unpretentious, and committed. I felt I was briefly able to join a welcoming community where everyone's just trying to get a solid workout in. My coach was Enrique, who checked in with me before class to make sure I was comfortable, ready, and knew what to expect. He gave good instructions on exercises, motivation, and importantly emphasized proper form, not just speed or volume. The workout was a HIIT style class with circuits of functional bodyweight, dumbbell, kettlebell exercises. I felt sufficiently challenged while in a safe, encouraging way and got an effective workout - high energy, good music, flew by fast - and was fun! I would definitely make a point take to another class at KRANK when I'm visiting Brooklyn. read more

If you're like me, you've spent money on gym memberships, trainers, powders and vitamins, and other bullshit in your bid to get in shape. And, if you're like me, probably 80% of that has been a waste of money - certainly I'm not the only one who's gotten a trainer for a few sessions, only for the trainer to put you through a generic pace that offers no effort from his/her end and, hence, no value. So over the past few years, these "boot camp" classes have become quite popular. I signed up for one at Krank via Groupon (or similar company?) because I thought it would be a good kick in the butt. Needless to say, I got my ass kicked. First off, Dan is great. He's not full of it like the trainers at the major gyms - he's personally invested in this. He designs work-outs that not only will get you in shape (with a balanced diet, of course, which is your responsibility) but also you will learn that your limits will fall by the wayside. My stamina increased because I learned I could do more than what I thought I could, and that's all due to Dan showing me I could do this. (Plus, If you're some MILF or Cougar looking to lay the trainer, Dan's not gonna play that - he's there for us.) Additionally, the people in the class are first-rate. Sure, I was only there for a month, so I wasn't able to develop the relationships I could with others, but we were all equals pushing each other. Plus, watching the women handle more weights and/or reps than me was an inspiration (not because women are lesser but) because I knew if they were more capable than me and they had been doing this for a few months already, I would experience the same results. As it stood, my gf liked the results (they' were subtle but, after a month, you realize those squats are really doing something!) and I was in much better shape than I had been in years. Alas, circumstances with work prevented me from joining beyond a month, but when things clear up for me, I'm going to join. I've tried one other Groupon boot camp and it didn't compare, but I ran circles around my other classmates in part to my experience in Krank. Currently I'm trying to do much of the intensity on my own at the gym (previous membership, yo!) just to keep the blood flowing, but I'm sure I'm not getting as much of a workout as Dan was giving me. read more

First of all, I hate exercise, i mean any exercise. Except choreography dance. In my entire life I've tried to exercise at home, downloaded some apps or go to gym by myself. But there is no single method that could help me to stay on track more than few weeks. 8 months ago I started looking for something else. I did alot of research on gyms in New york and finally found Crank. The first time i went there, the place seemed pretty shabby from the outside, but when i went inside it was another world. it's the perfect size, with all the right equipment. There are 3 trainers all with different specialities, but all great. And best of all, the price is cheaper than almost every other gym i researched! It's been 8 months since i started there and I can't believe i'm still motivated and going strong. They even changed my outlook on exercise. In the beginning i just wanted to lose weight and nothing else. But now i love exercise for the health of it and not just to look good. Just one suggestion... Krank is the best decision I made in 2015. The pictures and videos might intimidate you, they intimidated me and it took me a while to work up the determination to show up but once I did I regretted taking so long to make such a simple decision. A decision that is having a hugely positive impact on my life. I started by doing the 21 day fat loss challenge and it's no joke. 21 days of minimum 3 Krank workouts a week, following a strict meal plan and most importantly being held accountable every single day by Danny. The results were magic. 3 percentage points off my body fat, nearly 10lbs down and a new foundation for my eating habits and life. Since then I signed up for a membership (really reasonably priced) and try to get there as much as I possibly can. I am your average person. I never held a kettle bell before. I'd go to the gym every time the northern lights made an appearance in Florida, spent some time on the elliptical and convinced myself that I worked out, I then rewarded myself with pizza. Didn't work so well for me. At Krank you work hard, it's an hour of dedicated ass kicking but in the best way possible. You have one coach leading the session and one or two additional coaches walking around the group monitoring form and helping out. They don't get into your face and yell at you or tell you that you are weak. They get up close and patiently show you how to adjust your body to ensure you do not hurt yourself. If you are new/not able to work at the same pace as the general group/have an injury or just different needs the coaches may separate you out of the group and give you a one on one workout. This has happened to me a few times and it essentially a private workout class aka the best thing ever for no additional money. I can keep going on about the benefits but here is all you need to know. You gotta want to do the work. You gotta stay dedicated. KrankBK is also a ***DO WORK ZONE*** this is not the place for anyone who wants to walk around on their cell phone texting or chatting with the homies or girlfriends. When you come to Krank BK it's because you're committed and ready to work. The sessions are incredible. You will feel muscles that you never knew existed and it never gets old because the sessions change daily. ****ITS NEVER THE SAME EVER***. As long as you are committed and consistent you will see the results. Everyone who is here is here for the same reason and that's to "Be the best you that you can be" No one is there to compete with the other person or put them down. Everyone wants to better themselves and become stronger, happier and healthier. The environment at Krank BK is very family like minus the drama. I used to compete as a boxer and thai boxer and I can say that if you're looking to get into shape, the training here is just as good and you will save yourself the bruises. It's also fun. Everything about it. Give it a shot. Challenge yourself and go beyond what you thought to be possible. Here they'll push you to make it happen. As for other gyms, don't waste your time... A lot of times I found myself joining gyms and trying new regimens and diets that were only temporary. After a month or two I'd fall back to my old eating habits. I would also get bored and annoyed with the gyms I was going to because of the usual reasons people get mad at the gyms they got to such as : 1. Equipment is never available when you need it because one person is using 3-10 things at once. 2. Boring and monotonous. 3. Show off muscle heads 4. Personal training sessions less than what you would have done on your own. 5. Not worth the money altogether...etc. Im sure I'm not alone as far as that is concerned. Krank is def a dope place!!!!!!!!! I have been struggling with weight issues for quite some time my whole family goes to see Danny and I see the changes but the changing point for me was seeing the change in my brother. Melvin is a brand new person and him losing weight and sticking to it inspired me. Danny is one of the best motivators I know!!!!! Everyone is sooooo motivating and willing to help each other out. My fiancé and I have been working out with Krank Brooklyn for almost two weeks now. We were always members at traditional gyms which became boring. We needed a push and that we got, at Krank! We are so motivated and feeling like we are on our way to getting into the shape that we have always wanted to be in! I love the staff and the workouts are intense but worth it! I've been a member at Krank BK since the second week it opened years ago and it is my home away from home!! All levels are welcomed with open arms and the atmosphere is supportive, positive and motivating. Whether you're out of shape and just starting out on your fitness journey or you're a seasoned power lifter, the coaches treat you like you matter. They pay attention to your strengths and weaknesses and they work with you to reach your personal goals. Even though we workout in a group setting, I always feel like I'm getting personal attention. "Best gym in Brooklyn" doesn't even begin to describe Krank! Every trainer is knowledgeable, passionate, friendly, approachable and just an all around cool people. All the members are friendly, encouraging and I felt very welcomed. I started going back in 2012 and it made a huge impact on my health and body. I have injuries and all the coaches were very helpful in offering modifications that still left me feeling challenged. I moved up about an hour away in 2014 and continued to go for a while until my schedule didn't allow for the commute. Unlike every other gym I've ever belonged to, Krank has members that commute from all over - this really speaks to the quality of Krank. I have yet to find a gym that's as top quality as Krank.
