Came here to get my stamp for the Drip Drive and was very glad to find this gem of a coffee shop! First of all, you have to try the coffee flights. What a cool way to try a variety of drinks and flavors! The campfire mocha is my favorite, but I'd also suggest the peanut butter mocha: two delicious flavors that a lot of coffee shops don't offer. The bagel sandwiches are also very good. You can't go wrong with the Steinway. 647 has a very relaxing atmosphere great to get some work done, unwind, or chat with a friend. I found the leather couches very comfortable and was able to knock out a lot of work while enjoying my coffee flight and food. 647 is certainly a coffee shop that I will be visiting on a regular basis. read more

I got the CDC Sizzle and the seasonal Cherry Blossom Mocha. I really liked the richeness of the chocolate and coffee. The lady taking our order was friendly and the food came out pretty much right after the drinks did. The roads to the parking lot were destroyed so just beware, obviously not the coffee shops fault but something to keep in mind. Inside was clean and nice. Felt higher end nothing overly noticeable. I found 647 Coffee through the Drip Drive, the passport that you can get stamped at all of the participating local coffee shops in the area. I was so glad I stopped in. It's always cool finding hidden gems like this around Akron. I tried the iced Pistachio Matcha and it was super refreshing and tasty. An absolute perfect working space, I spent the entire day here with my laptop and my headphones and at least three cups of their excellent coffee. It's a cool space with lots of seating, lots of power outlets and a wifi that worked really well. I was super impressed and enjoyed the time. 647 Coffee is a beautiful and spacious spot with tons of seating--perfect for groups to gather, work, or just hang out. The artwork adds a nice creative touch, and I really love that it appears to be a nonprofit making a positive impact in the community. The coffee itself wasn't my favorite--it's not bad, but it has a strange aftertaste that didn't sit well with me (though I acknowledge that could just be a matter of personal preference). Wi-Fi was tough to connect to, and I felt a bit unsure about its security. The surrounding neighborhood seems rough, with visible drug activity. Very cool chill and spacious coffee shop that is connected to a church. Plenty of space and outlets to work or study from. The service is friendly and the music is mellow which makes it a great place to concentrate or have a conversation. The lattes were made well and it was enjoyable to drink. They have a stage so looks like they might have live music at times and they also sometimes have special food takeovers. The front door of the facility is on the one-way street. The parking lot is in the back. The inside of this place is large and welcoming. It looks like a great place to do work. There's no password for the Wi-Fi so it's easy to connect. I purchased my typical drink an espresso macchiato. The presentation was poor, and the flavor was bitter. Compass is another great coffee place. It's a cool looking space. There's plenty of chairs and tables. Quiet atmosphere. You can really get comfortable or do some work. An interesting thing is that it's in the bottom of a church. I don't know if the church is still open but it looked like it. They in spite of this don't have a religious theme. It's actually a social justice kind of place. They give some of their profits to the community to help people who need things. As for the coffee, it's good. They have a small menu but there's variety. I had a cortado. It's $3.50 for a cup. They have some non dairy milks. Among the snacks are those Betty Lou treats which you can eat pretty fast. They have several flavors of these. It overall has some good coffee. It doesn't have much in the way of food. They might at some times. read more

I questioned leaving a review, because I myself am a barista at a specialty coffee shop and I want to be supportive of all other local shops. Unfortunately, my experience here was really disappointing & I want it to be heard by the owners of the shop as well as future customers. When I walked in I was kindly greeted by a female barista & she was the highlight of my whole experience (super kind and accommodating) I ordered an oat milk cappuccino which came in 12oz /16oz sizes which is not standard for cappuccinos, but that's not the end of the world. When I received my capp I was super confused by the looks of it. The basista kindly told me that they make their own milk and it's a lot thicker than usual. She also said if I didn't like it I could swap it out for something else which was super generous. Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome that this shop makes it own oatmilk and offers cost effective vegan options, but this was absolutely atrocious. My cappuccino was basically porridge and I couldn't handle it. (I wish I could add the video I took of me stirring this drink. Unreal.) I gave the capp back and asked for an iced coffee instead and the barista poured hot drip coffee over ice, which is a huge red flag that their staff hasn't been trained properly. I feel incredibly bad for their staff. They're not trained well and they're the ones who have to take the brunt when people are served bad product. For a coffee shop that tries to fall into the 'third wave'/ 'specialty coffee' category it's just not good. read more

The first non-profit third wave coffee shop I've ever heard of or been too. I love that my money not only pays for great coffee, but also goes into the Middlebury community. Win win! They actually have a siphon brewing apparatus too! That's even hard to find in the SF Bay Area. Please try siphon when it's not busy here though, in respect for the baristas. They have pour overs, espresso, loose leaf tea, any drink you can think of, they have. Compass is located within The Well, a community development corporation, that is all about giving back and helping their community. Unlike some other massive business moving into a certain local mall, but that's another discussion. The space is huge with assorted seating arrangements. They have a coveted La Marzocco espresso machine, know worldwide as one of the best espresso machines on the planet. The baristas are super chill, knowledgeable, and clearly have a passion for coffee. There are games here, a little shop, open mic night. I mean this place is just amazing. It's also part of the Drip Drive and the Hartzler Coffee cruise, both analogous to the Akron area beer passport. read more

The inside of the coffee shop is very aesthetically pleasing. This could be a very good option for a first date or study location. I ended up getting their seasonal gingerbread latte and gingerbread oatmeal cream pie. I was not disappointed. The gingerbread cream pie was probably the best I've ever had. It was a little on the sweeter side but I highly recommend getting one before it goes away. The latte was also very good. I just wish it was a tad sweeter and had a more gingerbread flavor to it. Also, it was fairly priced for what I was getting. I will definitely be going back to try their other coffee options and lunch (lunch menu looked pretty good). Overall, highly recommend and definitely recommend going before seasonal options are gone. I apologize for no picture! I'll remember to take some next time! read more

Compass Coffee is a great place tucked away on East Market Street. In the bottom of an old church is some of the best coffee in Akron. The space is large and modern - there is tons of seating. I had a thyme infused almond milk latte that was unlike anything I've ever had before. It was crafted with care and made beautifully. The thyme was so pronounced, but not overwhelming. Would work great for business meetings or to catch up with friends. They offer drip and pour over coffee. One of my go to places if I want to get some studying done. This place has plenty of tables and outlets if you're trying to stake out a study spot (or just sit down with friends to catch up) This place is in the back of a church. They have their own parking lot. And they have a cool back story, where a portion of their profits go back to the local community. The place generally isn't super loud, so it's nice to get work done. There's also outside seating, which is nice on sunny days. They have board games, if you're just trying to hang out. Drinks are good. When I was last there, they were brewing sightglass coffee beans, which is one of my favorite coffee spots from San Francisco. They also make a really good blueberry lemonade (for when I'm already overcaffeinated). read more

Compass coffee is a spacious coffee shop located pretty close to The University of Akron. the price is typical for a small coffee shop. It has a lot of room so if you're not into tight spaces you will definitely feel comfortable here. They have stools for just a person or large tables for a group of people. There are a couple of outlets around if you need to recharge that laptop. It is moderately loud so don't expect to get any hard core studying done. It is ideal for working on group projects or catching up with friends. The coffee itself is pretty good. I had a peppermint latte from there (it's one of their seasonal flavors) and I enjoyed it. I should also mention I think it's cool that they host events in the evenings such as open mic night. The staff are super friendly and nice and do their job well so please tip them! Here are my complaints. They don't have the typical syrups that you would have at a chain. And even coffee shops that aren't chains have hazelnut syrup. I love my hazelnut lattes and it's a pretty common flavor. So in short, their regular options are pretty limited. Although it is spacious, it looks kinda dull inside the coffee shop. It doesn't have that cozy inviting feeling I look for in coffee shops. So it wasn't a bad experience but it didn't become my go-to for a cup of coffee. read more

Compass coffee is a rare coffee shop that uses coffee and their location as a means of serving the community. Exciting and wonderful things for the good of others and Akron are happening here. As a lover of specialty coffee it is Compass Coffee's function as a multi roaster, bringing some of the best coffee from around the U.S. to Akron, that also makes me excited about them. No other place in Akron does this. You can't even get the same coffee sent to your house for less money!! Compass coffee is your typical thirdwave coffee shop with a La Marrzocco espresso machine and some of the best grinders in the market (Mahlkonig Ek43 and Mazzer) to ensure the best tasting espresso and coffee pour overs. The space is very spacious and well suited for studying, getting together with friends, or having a meeting and their hours of operation make this possible on most days and hours of the week. I can see myself visiting often, canceling my coffee subscriptions and buying coffee here, and making this my coffee shop (in addition to Artisan in Ellet ). Hidden gem: located behind a church. They have a selection of coffee you can tell is carefully chosen for the shop. I got the black honey pour over and it was one of the best coffees I've had. Free wifi, open space, I set up and did some work for 4ish hours and noticed that customers here randomly engage with each other and create this sense of community that I've never witnessed in Boston or the Bay Area. I genuinely enjoyed this place-- good coffee, relaxed ambiance, and chill music. read more

This is my first time coming to Compass Coffee. The environment is clean, spacious, and quiet. I had hoped to order food, but they "turn of their griddle" at 11a. However, they are open until 12a...so I guess no one needs food from 11a-12a? I mean, it's not my business, but it seems like making egg sandwiches isn't so hard to do all day long. It just turns me off, since I can get food at every coffee shop in Akron. The person at the register was a young man with platinum blonde hair. He seemed disinterested in helping me. I told him it was my first time here and he didn't welcome me or seem to want to talk about the coffee shop, its events, or much of anything. Every piece of information he gave me required me to ask him a direct question. After he made my coffee and gave me my food, he proceeded to stand at the end of the counter and use his iPhone. I ordered a London Fog which was described as an "Earl Grey Latte". Since I've never had Earl Grey tea, I didn't know what that meant, and since the cashier wasn't particularly enthusiastic about his job, I didn't want to ask. I ordered it because I like to try new things, not because they guy running the show encouraged me in any way. Because they didn't have any real food, I ordered a chocolate croissant. This was a mistake. The chocolate was so old it turned to the light brown, chalky color that happens to stale chocolate. The bread was so old it stuck between my teeth in an unpleasantly gummy way. Since the shop is in the basement of a church, it is clearly difficult to heat, because it's so cold that I wish I had brought a coat. If you're gonna put a coffee shop in a space of this size, you should probably just accept higher heating bills. It's so uncomfortably cold that I'm staying long enough to write this review and drink my coffee. I won't be finishing my stale croissant and I won't ever come back here. There are so many coffee shops in Akron with a better atmosphere, better customer service, and better food...you gotta compete to keep me interested. Considering the neighborhood, I'd say you're better off hitting up Angel Falls in Highland Square, the Nervous Dog in Wallhaven, or Artisan in Ellett. You'll find better everything there. read more

Yessir! I love it :) Here's why: 1. Great coffee. Even the standard cuppa is phenomenal. Gotta admit: I usually don't "get" brewing methods that require a degree in chemistry to brew. I just know that whatever Compass is serving makes me want to dance. 2. Atmosphere. It's kind of a trump card for me. If you've seen the pics on Yelp, you get it. Industrial, spacious, and vibe-y. The small things: Music choice = urban-indie awesome. Lighting is low and nice. Plenty o' plugs for laptop power. Table height is perfect for working on the laptop / reading. 3. Staff. The baristas are knowledgable and kind. I asked Danielle to surprise me with her choice - an opportunity to show off a little bit. She chose the dark roast drip -- seemed like a safe bet, but proved a great choice. Super approachable and helpful. 4. Free wifi. Not to sound too punchy here, but free wifi = "a reason to hang all day." Over my 4 hours working here, I had great connection and got plenty of stuff done.
