Today was my husband's 40th and the worst decision we made was having lunch here. The restaurant was 1/3 full when we arrived, yet they seated us in a private room with two large birthday parties and it was so extremely awkward. One other table of two also agreed that they felt weird sitting in there, but they refused to move them to the empty area of the restaurant. The two large groups kept looking over at the two weird tables of 2 and 6 like we were in their space and it was so weird. We felt absolutely displaced and they could have easily put two tables together in their main dining area. Disgraceful. We were an afterthought in this room. We ordered fajitas and what a mistake. The beef and chicken is cur into small chunks, which would normally help poor cuts of meat be more edible, but this was not the case here. We paid $70 for fajitas that my son had to spit out because none of us could chew it. Had 1/2 pound or more of beef on the platter we couldn't eat. I let our waitress know when she asked if we wanted a to go box that it wasn't chewable and it was so fatty we couldn't eat it. She says to us "okay so what, you want a discount or something" I said "well, whatever it is you do, we don't want to take it home." No discount was given. Instead she tried to charge us for the two meals next to us at the other awkward table of two making our check an additional $30. My mother in law who paid our $140 check noticed and asked her to fix it and she did and we were shocked they no discount was given for the beef we couldn't eat on the $70 platter of fajitas. The beans and lard had completely separated and were disgusting. The guacamole had gone rancid. My daughter's chicken tenders were obviously frozen beforehand (which we expected), but weren't even cooked to be warmed through completely and were pale and so disappointing, even for a kid. I'm not expecting Gordon Ramsey style chicken tenders, but warm them all the way through. The service was awful at best because two girls were busy caring for 2 large parities. They left us waiting for refills constantly and walked away while we were still talking because they could have cared less about us. Don't go here. Better yet, don't take someone here on their birthday. If a meal is inedible and you mention it and you train your wait staff to simply say "you want a discount or something?" How weird do you think they is for the patrons eating their meals and paying money there? A discount and an apology should have been automatic. Absolutely unacceptable. In an economy where people don't just go out constantly and pick and are more selective as to where to spend money, to have service and meals like this is unacceptable and pitiful. Spending money on a meal that enjoyable with good service is absolutely a pleasure, but this was the opposite and the waitress didn't even care to make it right.

When something is scheduled in advance, as the owner of the business, Martha you should know how to handle situations without hostility and be able to work under pressure without snapping on your guests. Snapping on the bride and her pregnant friend is pretty horrible service and so disappointing. Thankfully my friend is not easily moved and she was still able to enjoy her night! People, if you want to support a small business, maybe find one that doesn't have multiple reviews about the owner of the place being incredibly rude to her guests. If you're in helotes looking for real authentic Mexican food, exceptional service and some pretty cool stuff to look at while you're inside I'd recommend El Chaparral Mexican Restaurant.

Hidden Gem Alert…read more El Buen Gusto Mexican Cafe at the corner of Tezel & Mainland next to the Pizza Hut. This place is a neighborhood favorite and for good reason. This no frills, locally owned restaurant is a true classic that keeps things simple and delicious. They offer amazing flavors at a huge value. I personally cannot get enough of their Breakfast Tacos. I go with the $3 Steak & Egg + Sautéed Onions Breakfast Taco. Two is more than enough but I always get three so I'm not kicking myself later. They offer breakfast and lunch most days until 2 pm, opened until 6 pm on Friday & Saturday, and closed Tuesdays. They have a small dining room that has about 20 chairs, with the nostalgia turned way up. Feels like you're at Abuela's house. I started my Foodie journey to help promote places just like this. Now, if you know me, you know I evaluate Mexican restaurants on their rice, beans, and tortillas. Mia's rice was some of the best I have ever had. The texture was perfect, and the flavor was absolutely delicious. The beans were also very good. They were nice and thick and tasted of lard. Where Mia's fell a bit short was with the tortillas. They did not pass the smell test, they were a bit dry, they were a bit hard, and they did not taste that good. However, my wife has brought me tacos from there, so I know that they are capable of making some damned good tortillas. Maybe today they had problems. I don't know. The enchiladas on my plate were substantial. There must have been at least ¼ cup of ground beef in each one. The enchilada sauce was very good. It was not too salty like so many restaurants have started making. The puffy taco was as good as any I have had anywhere. It was huge, so I ate it with a fork. I could only eat about half of it. I was STUFFED. Trust me... There is no better STUFFED than when you are stuffed with delicious Mexican food like they serve here. My wife ordered and enjoyed an al carbon salad. She had some dental work recently and has to be careful about what she tries to chew. I'm glad she enjoyed it. I am not a salad eater (hence the big butt and belly). It did not look appetizing to me. The restaurant vibe reminded me of Mexican restaurants from my childhood. The music was nice. Everything was clean. The servers and hostess were awesome.
